I received an ARC of this book from Bookouture via NetGalley in exchange for my honest feedback. This was a quick read which kept my interest from the beginning. The author did a great job making various characters seem sinister and suspicious to confuse matters and make you doubt everyone. I think a few times the main character of Eve made stupid decisions and also was not as strong as she should have been (like when her mom sent her daughter off with Eve's ex without asking, big no way to that!). The twist at the end was entirely unexpected but I found it just slightly short of realistic. Overall, I enjoyed this - thrillers that manage to thrill throughout and then actually surprise me with their twists are always a hit for me.

Perfectly written! Lots to twist and turns. I love this author and will definitely be on the look out for more!

Phillipa Roberts, renowned author of the ‘Tower’ series, disappears and her whereabouts is still unknown ten months later. Eve Hewitt is the narrator for the series and when a draft manuscript is discovered of book number ten that Phillipa was known to have been working on, she’s called in by the publisher to narrate the audio version. Prior to recording Eve starts reading the manuscript and is concerned by discrepancies between the characters and those in the previous books.

‘The Narrator’ is a compelling thriller that’s kept me involved from page one. The plot has been well thought-out, the characters are interesting, and the drama, intrigue and twists and turns have kept me reading as I’ve tried to unravel this tangled mystery. Although the ending is a bit disappointing and not at all what I was expecting, it’s still an enjoyable and immensely readable book that I’m happy to recommend.

Eve narrates books for audiobooks. In particular she has narrated the Philippa Roberts crime series, all 9 books.

Then Eve’s life fell apart, she lost her dad, her husband had an affair and Philippa (who had become a friend) disappears. Eve now loves with her mum with her young daughter.

When Philippa’s wife finds book 10 in the series buried in their attic, Eve is invited back to narrate this one too.

This relights a fire in Eve where she needs to know what happened to Philippa. What she discovers will change her whole life!

This was short and sweet. I was desperate to get to the end and find out where Philippa was. It was a good ending.

However I would have preferred the storyline to be teased out a bit more.

Absolutely captivating! I’ve read so many thrillers that I can pretty easily guess which way things will turn in a story, but the ultimate twist in The Narrator was one I didn’t see coming! Well done!

I seem to be in the minority here, but I felt this one fell a bit flat.

It was fine for the most part and went along at a happy pace (that husband though! Heavens alive, what an idiot) but parts seemed a little contrived (why would Eve's mother hand Scarlet over to Hugo? Makes no sense considering). Ditto for Chad's behaviour, it just seems so unlikely that anyone would behave that way.

Also, while I appreciated the twist at the end, it was a bit far-fetched. I think what I'm trying to say is that I had to suspend belief a few times, which makes me feel that there isn't a worthy enough story so the author has to embellish a bit. Not always a bad thing, but this didn't sit right.

A mediocre but not awful 3 stars.

I hated that accepting the opportunity meant leaving Scarlet with my ex in his perfect new home with his perfect new girlfriend. But I knew it was the right thing to do.

After reading Phillips's new novel I begin to think it's no coincidence I was chosen to narrate it.


There’s something hidden in the pages of this book, I’m sure of it. Some clue to Philippa’s disappearance. And I don’t feel safe. I think I’m being watched. My room has been searched.

And then my ex’s girlfriend calls in tears and everything starts to click together. If I don’t find answers fast, I’ll lose more than my second chance. I’ll lose my daughter.


The Narrator is a faced paced read, and worthy of four out of five stars.

The pacing of this was awful and the characters were painfully flat. The "twist" was eye roll worthy.

I’m still shookt! That was a pleasant read. Looking forward to more from this author.

This is my first K L Slater book and I can say that I am not disappointed!
I was immediately drawn in by the theme of the book. It is unique and made the book stand out.
The book was amazing! I was sucked in from the first chapter and I could not put it down.
The book had twists and turns that I did not see coming. I thought I had the story worked out but then bam i was turned in another direction and I found myself questioning the motives of all the characters.
Such a great book and I highly recommend.
I was very fortunate to receive a ARC and I really appreciate the privilege of receiving one.
I am now going to go and read all of K L Slaters books now :)

This book was a mystery within a mystery. Phillipa is a well-known author who has been missing for 10 months and suddenly a manuscript for her last book turns up. Eve is her book narrator and is still grieving her dad's mysterious death not that long ago. Was his death accidental or suicide?? AS Eve begins to narrate the new book she notices there are too many inconsistencies. The characters are different, and it feels like Phillipa is trying to send a message. Eve gets caught up in trying to figure it out. While she is away working her ex-husband has taken her 5-year-old daughter to live with him and his girlfriend (who once was Eve's friend). And Eve has a stalker who turns out to be the hero of the story. The story flips around from the missing author who is being held captive and Eve trying to figure out what caused her disappearance. Information comes to light and puts Eve in danger. Parts of the story were creepy, and parts were scary. There is a big payoff towards the end and a twist that you'll never see coming. It is quite a surprise and it tied up all the loose ends. A good read.

I have read other books by K L Slater so I was very excited to read the ARC for The Narrator. The book is very twisty and exciting throughout.

Eve has had a successful voice over career thanks to famous author Phillipa Robert’s popular book series. But the sudden disappearance of the famous author along with her separation from her husband have turned her world upside down. Eve has moved home with her daughter to live with her Mom for a while.

A newly discovered book in the series changes things and she is now headed back to work. Along with Chad, a Phillipa super fan, the pair investigate the disappearance of the author and the circumstances surrounding it.

This book was full of good characters and plot twists to keep you interested throughout. Looking forward to the next book by this author. Thank you for my advance copy to read and review.

Kim Slater has written another wild and twisted thriller that will take you on a ride you didn't expect! Unveiling all kinds of clues and red herrings, the ending is a surprise that you won't see coming. A mark of a great read is when the author invokes some truly strong feelings about one or more of the characters!

When author Phillipa Roberts disappears, Eve’s live is uprooted! Eve was the narrator of Phillipa’s book series and it brought in a good pay check for herself and her daughter Scarlet in London. The pacing moves along quicker once a manuscript is found and Eve is asked by the publisher to be the narrator again. This is a slow burn thriller with a few twists. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for a copy.

I have never read anything by K.L. Slater before and I have to say I was hooked from the very first pages. I got half way through the book in one afternoon. If I didn't have to go to work the next day, I would have stayed up all night to finish this outstanding book. I never expected the plot twist and was so shcoked and surprise by it. So many characters that you will love and equally hate at the same time. Eve was a very confident and strong character, who you just love but wonder what she ever saw in her ex-husband Hugo. What an ass! The one thing I couldn't believe was how Eve could still be friendly with Hugo's new pregnant girlfriend Siskia. Eve is a better person then I would be on that front. I will add K.L. Slater books on my to read book list.

Eve has gone through a harrowing divorce, and has custody of her daughter, Scarlet, who is her life. She is living with her elderly Mum, after suffering a breakdown.

She gets a call from the publishers, asking her to narrate a new secret book by a bestselling author who has been missing for ten months. Eve narrated the first nine books, but this new book has various errors, straying from the well beloved character's normal personality traits. Eve makes it her business to find out what happened to Phillipa Roberts, and there is someone out there that doesn't want her to get any further with her investigation.

And then there is the superfan, Chad to contend with, who attempts to convince Eve that he knows what has happened to Phillipa, but becomes a stalker instead.


A gripping novel, I finished it in one sitting. Kept me engaged from the first chapter. Many twists, and the characters were described perfectly.

I just have an error to report.......... In chapter 56, when Eve is grabbed from the street and shoved into a van, she was in London, and had seen the man in the graveyard, from the window.... yet it says "Within seconds we are travelling very fast, away from Mum's street"

I know this is an uncorrected ARC, but hope that the error is picked up and corrected.

I’m a big fan of the author’s work and this started out as a clever fast paced read but it all got a bit convoluted for me. I liked the idea of a writer writing about the life of a writer and the added intrigue of her disappearance and I admit I didn’t see the ending coming, but it’s almost, for me, as if there were too many subplots running along. A good read but not in my opinion her best, so for once just four stars for this brilliantly talented author

K.L Slater is always a good bet for a fast paced, quick read thriller and The Narrator was no exception. The main character is Eve, a woman who does audio narration for books, mostly for a very popular author named Phillipa Roberts. Phillipa was the author of a popular nine book series called "The Tower Series" and was about to receive a literary award when she vanished, leaving behind her wife Fleur and a stepson, Max. The story goes between the viewpoints of Phillipa, a fan of the author named Chad, and Eve. Eve is going through some problems; her husband has left her for her associate who is now pregnant with his child, and Eve and her five year old daughter are forced to move home with Eve's mother. When a hidden copy of book ten of the "Tower" series is found hidden in Phillipa's attic, Eve is asked to narrate the book which makes her wonder what happened to Phillipa and she begins her own investigation.

There are a lot of moving parts in this book and some things that didn't quite make sense to me. There were perhaps one too many subplots including the plot with Eve's dad, Eve's ex-husband, things going on with Fleur and various things with the agent/publisher The ending comes abruptly and contains a lot of twists which I could not have guessed at. I liked the original idea of a book about a book narrator, but found parts of this to be topics that are done a lot, including Phillipa's disappearance,, Eve's gaslighting husband and the roles of people from the publishing company. Three stars for Slater's usual exciting writing and sympathetic lead character. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.

K.L. Slater is one of my go to authors and one of her newest books was just as much of an enjoyable read as her others have been. Eve is a single mom, living back in her childhood home with her daughter and mom and trying to figure out what to do with her life. When the opportunity to narrator another book by her friend and missing author arises she takes the opportunity to go to London. Once there though it becomes obvious something isn’t right with the new book and soon Eve finds herself in the middle of her own investigation. This book had a great combination of mystery and twists that I found myself unable to put it down.
