K.L Slater is always a good bet for a fast paced, quick read thriller and The Narrator was no exception. The main character is Eve, a woman who does audio narration for books, mostly for a very popular author named Phillipa Roberts. Phillipa was the author of a popular nine book series called "The Tower Series" and was about to receive a literary award when she vanished, leaving behind her wife Fleur and a stepson, Max. The story goes between the viewpoints of Phillipa, a fan of the author named Chad, and Eve. Eve is going through some problems; her husband has left her for her associate who is now pregnant with his child, and Eve and her five year old daughter are forced to move home with Eve's mother. When a hidden copy of book ten of the "Tower" series is found hidden in Phillipa's attic, Eve is asked to narrate the book which makes her wonder what happened to Phillipa and she begins her own investigation.
There are a lot of moving parts in this book and some things that didn't quite make sense to me. There were perhaps one too many subplots including the plot with Eve's dad, Eve's ex-husband, things going on with Fleur and various things with the agent/publisher The ending comes abruptly and contains a lot of twists which I could not have guessed at. I liked the original idea of a book about a book narrator, but found parts of this to be topics that are done a lot, including Phillipa's disappearance,, Eve's gaslighting husband and the roles of people from the publishing company. Three stars for Slater's usual exciting writing and sympathetic lead character. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
K.L. Slater is one of my go to authors and one of her newest books was just as much of an enjoyable read as her others have been. Eve is a single mom, living back in her childhood home with her daughter and mom and trying to figure out what to do with her life. When the opportunity to narrator another book by her friend and missing author arises she takes the opportunity to go to London. Once there though it becomes obvious something isn’t right with the new book and soon Eve finds herself in the middle of her own investigation. This book had a great combination of mystery and twists that I found myself unable to put it down.
Thank you to Netgalley and to the publishers for allowing me to read this advanced copy.
The Narrator was a thrilling and interesting quick read. I was drawn into the storyline fairly quickly and it kept me guessing to the end. It did a great job at creating tense moments at times throughout the book and I was very surprised by the twist at the end.
Edge of your seat thriller which had me guessing to the end, consumed this book within 24 hours!!!
Eve is a narrator of books, but recently the breakdown of her marriage and her main author’s disappearance meant a move back home to her mum’s along with her daughter Scarlet. Famous author Philippa Roberts’s disappearance is still a mystery ten months later, when a new manuscript is ‘found’.
Clever twists and turns take you on a rollercoaster of a ride. This tale will make you gasp and exclaim with frustration and second guessing….. this is brilliant and really enjoyed reading it!!! Really interesting to learn so much about the book world from agents to publishers and the narrators that make the stories come alive. Will be looking to read a few more from KL Slater!
Thank you to NetGalley for the early read much appreciated!
I love this authors books but this one wasn’t one of my favourites. I found it a bit slow for the half but persevered and the second half was really good and I didn’t expect the ending . I will still recommend this book to my audience as I’m sure lots of people will enjoy it . Only 4 stars from me this time
What a fascinating novel! I loved the switches in times and POVs. They added to the overall story instead of detracting from it. I thought the story was well written and I thought the big twist was very surprising. Overall, a very enjoyable thriller.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for a copy of this book.
Best selling author, Phillipa Roberts disappeared eight months ago. Her leaving her wife and step-son are left reeling over the disappearance.
When a secret manuscript for the next Phillipa Roberts' book is found in Phillipa's attic, our protagonist, Eve is called once again to narrate the audiobook.
When Eve reads the manuscript something about it feels off to her. Does it contain the key to the mystery of Phillipa's disappearance?
This is yet again a fantastic thriller by Slater that keeps you guessing until the very end.
Another gripping and fantastic book from K.L. Slater! I absolutely loved every minute reading it.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for the opportunity to read this ARC.
The plot was a bit far fetched but I couldn't put it down. KL Slater is very reliable that way, putting out one page turner after another. My full review appears on Weekend Notes.
Another thrilling novel from K.L. Slater, with some twists you’ll never see coming! Eve, a voice artist, is asked to record the audiobook for the newly-discovered book left behind by popular author Philippa Roberts, who disappeared the year before.
As Eve takes on this new job, strange occurrences start to happen around her, and the original manuscript may just contain clues to Philippa’s disappearance. But is this new undertaking putting Eve and her daughter, Scarlet, at risk? Eve immersed herself in the discovery of the truth, but at what price?
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
When reading this, just know that all you think you know is deceiving! This was a whirlwind of a story. Loved the twists!
The Narrator is a psychological/domestic thriller by best-selling author, KL Slater. I have read a few of the authors books before and she doesn’t disappoint. This book is no exception. We are treated to an intriguing mystery, complex characters and an explosive ending to top it off. I alternated between reading the e-book and listening to the audio and both were exceptional. If you are looking for fast-paced thrilling mystery then this one is worth picking up.
The story follows Eve, who has worked in the past as a narrator for best-selling author, Phillipa Roberts. Since Phillipa’s disappearance, Eve has been struggling for work and navigating a difficult relationship with her ex-partner and father of their young child. When an unpublished manuscript of Phillipa’s turns up, Eve is once again called in to narrate the audiobook. But the story concerns Eve who sets out to find out what really happened to Phillipa, only to discover the truth might end up being more than she expected.
KL Slater is an excellent storytelling and well worth a read if you are a fan of this genre. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an opportunity to read and review this book.
I love love love K.L. Slater! This book was so good. I love when a story has you guessing throughout, and this book had an ending that I wasn’t expecting at all!! 4/5 stars.
Being a single mother is hard
My little Scarlet is my world
I hated to leave her with my ex with his new girlfriend
It was brilliant
I had an ARC
As a massive KL Slater fan I was thrilled to be able to preview The Narrator. I was not disappointed! The story has you hooked from the first chapter and keeps you hooked throughout, twisting and turning right to the stunning finale! I did not see that ending coming wow and I was a bit gutted the book was over. It’s thrilling, it’s full of suspense and I bloody loved it! Highly recommended and will be an absolute hit , keep them coming please I already cannot wait for the next thriller from a very talented mind..
Did Philippa, who has gone missing, really write the book Eve has been hired to narrate? Eve's done all of Philippa's books and something seems off about this one, Eve has a lot of things going on in her own life- a death in the family, her ex Hugo, her little daughter Scarlett but she's still looking for answers in this twisty novel, No spoilers from me, Thanks to netgalley for the Arc, A good read.
This book started off really slow, but I know this author doesn’t normally write slow burns, so I kept going. Sure enough, it started to speed up as it went along. Unfortunately, it never completely grabbed me and pulled me in, but this was still a good story.
Philippa Roberts is a best-selling author, with a detective series of nine books that is quite popular. She has a lovely wife and success most people only dream of. Eve is the woman who narrates Philippa’s books into audio recordings. She’s a divorced single mother, always on the struggle - with her career, and with her ex-husband, Hugo.
These are our two main characters, though there are several others. When Philippa goes missing, the world turns upside down for many people, and as you read along, many things start to become suspicious. That’s about all that can be said, plot-wise.
Speaking of the plot, I thought it was decent. I figured out some of the ending pretty early on, but it was pretty multi-layered, so I was still surprised by a couple things. Overall, this book was good, but nothing that shocked me or excited me. I’m giving it 3.5 stars; I wish we could actually do that instead of trying to decide to round up or down, because in this case, I had to round down. This was good but nothing that blew my mind.
(Thank you to Bookouture, K.L. Slater, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my review. This book is slated to be released on January 6, 2023.)
Good solid thriller, kept me reading as was intrigued to find out the whole story. Some well written characters here.
The Narrator by K.L. Slater
I was hooked from beginning to end. It was a thriller with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing till the very end. I swear this author’s work just keep getting better and better. I would definitely recommend.
I never fail to be impressed withKim’s books and this is another corker! I’m only sad I have finished it! She writes beautifully, and captures people so well, flaws and all! I hope she never stops writing!
