The Narrator was a whirlwind of a story. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, there would be a twist that would catch me by surprise. Eve’s character is super relatable, especially to those who have gone through a divorce and are dealing with coparenting. I enjoyed the narration of each character and the author’s style of storytelling.
The reason I give this book 4/5 stars is for the ending. While it was a huge twist, it didn’t feel realistic. The ending answered all the questions but it’s always nice to have a bit left unknown. I look forward to checking out novels by K.L. Slater.
A fast paced read with a surprising twist at the end! I enjoyed reading this book, although after the twist was revealed I felt the ending was rushed.
You have a job you love, a man you love and a gorgeous daughter. You are on top of the world, but then life happens. Everything collapses like a house of cards and you are forced to move backwards in stead of forwards. The world seems like a black space, but you have your daughter to take care of and little by little you fight your way back.
A phone call give you new perspectives and although you have to go to London, you know your daughter is in good hands. But someone thinks they know better and decides they know better than you do.
You thought you knew the people around you, but in the end it seems like they had a lot to hide. Even though they thought they could get away with it, justice wins again.
Oh my. I guess there are characters you love and some you hate in every book. Sometimes those you love are the good ones, sometimes though they seem to be masters in deceit.
Authors manage to lead the readers where they want them to go and sometimes you really are flabbergasted when you know every single detail. I just love it.
Maybe this story was a bit slow paced, but it did give me a lot of reading pleasure. 4 stars
Thank you
The Narrator is about a best selling author named Phillipa Roberts who was being kidnapped at the beginning of the book. Eve who is the audio narrator of her books finds out that Phillipa's wife, Fleur had discovered an unfinished manuscript. Eve was chosen to narrate the book and finds the book gives a clue about her disappearance. Eve was also not happy to leave her daughter Scarlet behind with her ex Hugo and his perfect girlfriend, Saskia.
Unlike her previous books, I didn't find this book as intriguing as her previous book. Also I didn't find this book fast paced as her previous book but maybe it was just me. Nevertheless, this book had some twists and turns, the ending was what was a completely unexpected ending. Slater however manage to keep the reader hooked into the book, which I think was a good job. I do like that we got a sneak peak at what the publishing world is really like out there and overall, in my opinion, it was a good thriller book. Worth four stars.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
This is another nail biter of a novel from K. L. Slater that, as always, had me completely baffled as to which of the characters to hate or to root for. All my theories about who could and couldn't be trusted or who might be responsible for certain situations were systematically shot down leaving me mystified. The shock twist at the end knocked me sideways. I never for one minute saw that coming - but isn't that how a good psychological thriller should be? I highly recommend this book with its numerous twists and shocking ending and wish to thank Netgalley and Bookoutre for an ARC which I am delighted to voluntarily review.
K.L. Slater is a go to author for me when it comes to psychological thriller, and The Narrator doesn't disappoint: it is a twisty, jaw-dropping thriller and some of the events in the plot are mind-blowing!
Don't be discouraged by the slow beginning (I almost was) and keep reading because when it takes pace, then you'll find it difficult to put it down!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for the chance to read and review this ARC.
I absolutely adore KL Slater and have read such great thrillers from her over the years, that is why I was so disappointed by this book. I usually cannot put down a KL Slater book, but this one I didn't want to pick back up!!
I wasn't at all gripped by the story, and I found the plot to be incredibly slow. It took a long time to get going, and even then it felt very repetitive. This didn't feel like a KL Slater book at all for me.
If you have not read KL Slater before - please do not start with this one!
8 months after the author of the popular Tower series, Phillipa Roberts has gone missing, an undiscovered manuscript of the next book in the series is uncovered.
Eve is asked the narrate the story. This is an amazing carrer opportunity for her. She uses this opportunity to try and uncover clues to lead her to discover what happened to Phillipa.
However along with work pressures she is still grieving her father’s suicide, her Mum is sick, and her ex husband is trying to take custody of their daughter.
This is a nice easy thriller read with an usual story line! I did find the story ended very abruptly but I thought the main twist at the end was unique and I was blindsided!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture (Hachette) for providing a copy for an unbiased review. Eve is just coming back from huge loss in her life. Her father's suicide, her husbands cheating and leaving her, the author that she narrates books for disappearance. When a novel is located from missing Phillapa Roberts, Eve is asked to come back and narrate the long awaited final book in her series. As Eve reads the book she finds glaring differences in this book to all of the others that's she's read in the past. Did someone write this book other than Phillapa, where could the missing author be, what exactly is going on. Since Eve felt a friendship with the author it makes her dig in and try to find out things that the police may have missed. This gets her in to trouble with the people who are trying to let things lie. This book was a bit predictable, but it did have a big unexpected twist.
This book was so good. It kept you guessing with several suppects right upto the end and even then it had a twist that I never expected.
Phillipa is a best book novelist and one night on her way to an award ceremony she just disappears. Eve reads her books for audio readers and when she receives one of her latest novels to read she soon begins to worry. The characters and storylines aren't like any of the previous book from Phillipa. Even more worrying is when she is asked to delete the emailed book straight away and is emailedr another one which has been altered. Ever the detective Eve takes it upon herself to try and fnd out what happened to Phillippa both before and after which she will soon wish she had left well alone.
Eve, an audiobook narrator for bestselling author Philippa Roberts, has moved back home. Work has dried up since Philippa disappeared on the way to an awards event. No one’s heard of her and there are massive questions surrounding her disappearance, although no one seems overly concrete.
Out of nowhere a new manuscript by Philippa Roberts is discovered. But Eve knows her writing and it is not in the voice and writing style of Philippa. What is going on? Eve decides she needs to find out, but soon fears she and her daughter may be in danger.
With dynamic characters and plot twists galore, I really enjoyed The Narrator.
This was my first K.L. Slater book and it was a welcoming surprise!
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read and review this work.
Another fast paced, gripping thriller by one of my go to authors K.L Slater. Her books are always full of interesting characters and full of twists and turns.
Single mother Eve is finding life difficult, trying to rebuild her career as well as looking after her little girl Scarlet. Eve used to be a voice actor and was desperate to start earning money again so when she received an offer to narrate a secret book from bestselling author Philippa Roberts it was more than she could have wished for, Author Philippa Roberts has been missing for eight months so there was quite a lot of mystery surrounding this book.
To carry out the work Eve was required to work away from home, which meant leaving Scarlet with Hugo, her ex and his new partner. Although it hurt to leave her daughter she needed the work and this was such an opportunity to relaunch her career.
On starting in her new role Eve began reading Philippa’s novel and started to wonder if it was no coincidence that she had been chosen to narrate it. The more she read of the novel the more doubt she had in her mind that there was something hidden in the story. Was it an indication to Philippa’s disappearance or was she just imagining it, either way Eve felt unsafe and watched.
Another K.L Slater novel that I read from start to finish in one sitting, I just can’t stop turning the pages once I start.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Bookouture for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Great book. It did take me a few chapters to get into it but once I finally did, I couldn't put it down. Great story lot, great plot twist, and loved how the pieces were woven together. As always, Slater tells a great story.
K.L. Slater is a heavyweight in the crime/thriller book world, and The Narrator only further cements her place there.
I've read a few books from Slater over the years but this one really stands out as something a little different.
I love that there's no context in the first few chapters and you're dropped right into the story as soon as you start, context can always follow later but you can't beat a good hook in those first few pages.
Despite the focus being centred around one character's disappearance (no names, no spoilers!) I really appreciate that we got more background and focus on what are seemingly secondary characters.
It's not the most original twist, but then again almost everything has been done before in the literary world, the difference is if it's done well or not.
I can happily say I never saw that particular reveal coming.
My only gentle criticism is that I think the ending was a little hurried and confusing - although that may well just be my personal preference for a little more exposition and plot extension.
Eve is a single mum and was previously a narrator for the best-selling author Phillipa Roberts. But the work dried up when Phillipa went missing 10 months ago, so Eve and her daughter Scarlett moved out of London and are living with Eve’s mum.
The case of the missing author went cold and with no new leads the police have put it aside. Phillipa had some mental health issues and without a body the police have decided that she chose to just go away, leaving her wife and stepson.
One day whilst in the loft Phillipa’s wife comes across a hidden manuscript. The publishers decide to publish the book and Eve is called upon to narrate it. To do so Eve has to move back to London, leaving her daughter with her mum, but Hugo, Eve’s ex-husband decides that now he has a partner with a baby on the way, he wants Scarlett to stay with him.
Convinced that Phillipa’s disappearance isn’t quite as it seems, Eve decides to take on the role of amateur detective, but somebody knows what she is up to and does what they can to stop her getting to the truth.
This book was quite slow for me and I found it hard to get into. Having really enjoyed a lot of this authors books this one won’t put me off continuing to work through her back catalogue.
Well I dont know where to start another fantastic read from this author, couldn't put it down, kept me reading in to the night, a great storyline with great charecters and a twisty turny ending
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! It really had me wondering until the very end! Loved the characters and Eve was my favorite. Loved her strength and perseverance ! This was a great read ! Thanks for sharing
What do you get when you combine an author, her assistant, and an audiobook narrator with an obsessive book club fan?
You get K.L. Slater’s new meta mystery, “The Narrator.” Throw in an ex-husband and his new girlfriend and you get an explosive psychological thriller characterized by lies and secrets.
This was quite a bit different from Slater’s usual books and it took me a while to warm up to it. I think it was just the shock of something different, not that the book wasn’t up to Slater’s usual standards. Stater explored the idea that a narrator with baggage suspected that an author, who had since disappeared, was trying to send her clues in the manuscript.
There were lots of complicated relationships to untangle, many POV to consider, a behind the scenes view of the publishing world, an invitation to sleuth alongside the protagonist and a cast of characters who quickly became suspects. You’ll be rolling your eyes every time Hugo opens his mouth, you won’t know which suspect to believe, and then you’ll finish with a smile, knowing that only Slater could pull off such well-thought out twists. I love books that leave readers pondering what they’ve just read.
I was gifted this copy by Bookouture and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Eve is struggling at the moment. She is an audio book narrator who's father passed away and her cheating husband has left her. Eve is back living at home with her mother when she gets the call to narrate the secret book in the Tower series.
Phillipa is the author of the best selling Tower series. She has written nine books so far and is about to announce that there will not be a number 10 when she goes missing on her way to an award show where she expects to win the award. Her disappearance was sudden and mysterious. No one knows what has happened to her several months later.
As Eve starts to read the manuscript she will be narrating, she begins to suspect that the book may contain some hints as to what happened to Phillipa.
Lots of mystery and suspense in this one. And a twist or two along the way. I have heard great things about Slater's writing and am glad I finally read one of her books. Definitely worth the praise.
Publication date is January 13th.
Thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for the arc.
A plot twist that I didn't see coming! The Narrator is a great book with some interesting twists and turns that keeps you wanting to turn the page.
Eve is a single mom trying to get her life back in order after her dad passes and then gets a divorce from her cheating husband. When the opportunity comes up for her to narrate a new book in the Tower Series, she jumps on the chance. She was close friends with the author, whom went missing over 10 months ago. As she starts to work on the narration of the book, things keep happening that make Eve want to figure out where the author is and what made her disappear. Then the late night visitors, the crazy stalker fans and the threats keep piling up against Eve and you have to wonder what is going to happen next.
Again, this was such a fun and quick read from K.L.Slater and I will definitely be reading more from this author.
