Wow, The Narrator is definitely another winner from K L Slater. I've enjoyed all the K L Slater's books that I've read and making my way through all the others too. This may well top them all. A fantastic psychological thriller. I was drawn in from the first page, right through to the very last and it is very hard to put this book down.

Eve is a narrator and a single Mum to Scarlett, having split from her cheating husband, she went back to live with her Mum. She's been narrating a book series, but hasn't had any work since the author - Phillipa Roberts went missing. Out of the blue, the publishers contact Eve as they want her to narrate book 10 which has mysteriously turned up. This means going back to work in London for a while while leaving her daughter with her Mum. and I'm not going to give any more away - you must read more for yourself. all I will say its it really is well worth the read and will leaving you wanting more.

Fantastically written with some excellent characters and twists and turns that you will not see coming.

I also listened to the audio version and the actual narrators of this book - Clare Corbett and Kristin Atherton really do this book justice.

A big thanks to Netgalley and Bookoutre for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.

This was my second book by this author. She has now become one of my favorites. If you like a good twist mystery with a surprise ending. Read this book. The chapters are really short, which is always a plus for me.

The Narrator by K.L. Slater

Read this book if you want a super quick, fast-paced read that isn’t boring

What if the chance of a perfect life… put your daughter in grave danger?

Being a single mother is tough, but I’d do anything for my little girl Scarlet. I’d given up on my career as a voice actor when the call came, but suddenly I was the new narrator for a secret book from bestselling author Philippa Roberts, who has been missing for eight months. It was a lifeline for me and my daughter.

I hated that it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex in his perfect new home with his perfect new girlfriend. But I knew it was the right thing to do.

But as I start reading Philippa’s new novel, I start to wonder if it’s no coincidence that I’ve been chosen to narrate it. There’s something hidden in the pages of this book, I’m sure of it. Some clue to Philippa’s disappearance. And I don’t feel safe. I think I’m being watched. My room has been searched.

And then my ex’s girlfriend calls in tears and everything starts to click together. If I don’t find answers fast, I’ll lose more than my second chance. I’ll lose my daughter.

Coming out on January 6

Almost a year after crime author Philippa Roberts goes missing, the 10th book in her hugely popular Tower series is found hidden in her loft. The publishers get straight onto Eve - the narrator of the series’ audiobooks.

The last year of Eve’s life has been hard - splitting from her husband after his affair, her dad dying, and moving back in to her mum’s home with her 5-year-old daughter, Scarlet.

She jumps at the chance of narrating the new book - but when she starts reading it, she begins to feel that the book may contain hints as to what has happened to Philippa. Her investigations don’t seem to be welcomed by everyone however, and she starts to feel threatened and scared for her life and that of her daughter and mum.

This was such a great, twisty, fast-paced thriller. With the creepy super-fan Chad, and smug ex-husband Hugo, there were plenty of characters to feel nervous about. But the story was anything but predictable and I loved how much this kept me on my toes! I just could not put this down when it got towards the end - I stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it - I just knew I wasn’t going to be able to sleep until I found out what was going on! Truly suspenseful and exciting.

K.L. Slater, The Narrator, Bookoutur 2023

Thank you NetGalley for providing me with this uncorrected proof for review.

K.L. Slater has combined domestic drama and some interesting perspectives on creating and maintaining a popular series of novels; authors’ obligations and struggles; the process of writing, narrating and dealing with publicity; and fans. The plotting works well, with short chapters relating the story from the past and present, told from the perspectives of the main characters, Phillipa Roberts (author), Eve (narrator); and Chad (a super fan) interspersed with scenes from a dank basement and its alternative, a clean room with writing facilities.

Eve’s story is that of a woman who is divorced because of her husband’s infidelity and marriage to one of her past work colleagues. Eve must juggle her five-year-old and a new job, her former husband’s manipulation and her mother’s difficulty in accepting her work and lifestyle. The job as narrator of Phillipa Robert’s popular detective series leads Eve into investigating the author’s disappearance.

Phillipa Roberts’ public and private lives introduce a range of characters, from her wife and her son from a former marriage, the role of fans in maintaining an author’s popularity, and the staff of the publishing company.

K.L. Slater is adept at tying up the ends of the plot in a satisfying manner: sympathetic characters are suitably rewarded, and the guilty are punished appropriately. To get to this point, however, the characters are deftly devised to raise questions about who is guilty, and in some cases, guilty of what? Clues signal answers but are clever and not too obvious. The twists work well as they are woven into the broader idea of the novel about what it is to be an author and involved with the process of bringing a creative work to fruition. They are relevant to the story rather than devised just to confound the reader.

The Narrator is another success for K.L. Slater, providing a satisfying holiday read.

This was a story that grabbed me by the throat from the get go and didn't let go.
Every book I’ve read of hers have been thrilling, chilling and exciting right from start to finish.
A sharp psychological thriller!
As the story unfolds, Slater's clever writing had me leaning first one way and then another, but I had no idea exactly where it was all headed until the last few pages.
Riveting and masterfully told.
KL Slater has absolutely smashed it again!
I devoured this book as it twisted and turned, led me to false conclusions and even shocked me!
Awesome characters, amazing storyline, tense pacing and an ending that left me saying "wow".
The Narrator was absolutely a five star read.

I love a KL Slater novel and this one did not disappoint. When I found myself reading this at 4 am I knew that it was a winner.

This is full or red herrings.

I was like is it him? What about him? Maybe its her?

Slater sets up the plot and then tips you over the edge.

I was literally reeling at the end. and still am two days later.

I’ve enjoyed K.L Slater in the past and I can confidently say that this was one of her best! I love the point of view of the narrator and the setting up of supporting characters. Slater expertly weaves a tale of past experiences, professional and personal relationships, family and a mystery of a missing author. I personally am a big fan of different POVs and point-in- time in the stories, and this was no exception. Trying to piece together who was involved in Philipa’s disappearance and who to trust/not trust was gripping from beginning to end.

Well written! I very much enjoyed!!

This was a real page turner that kept me captivated from start to finish.

When the author of a popular book series goes missing, the mystery surrounding the disappearance prompts Eve, the books’ narrator to play detective. This was so twisty and recommended to fans of domestic thrillers.

Wow! I’m always amazed at KL Slater’s twisty thrillers. This one got me right up to the end.

A famous author goes missing on the cusp of the release of her next book. The police, media and fans believe she ran away to start a new life. The narrator to her books can’t let it go and finds herself in the middle of a twisted plot.

A highly recommend page turner. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was looking forward to reading this new book by K.L Slater as her books have always kept me gripped but overall I found this story abit slow,I was waiting for the pace to pick up but it never made that leap and the end was no surprise.
I would still recommend the authors other books all day long and look forward to her next offering.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Books for the ARC.

Captivating from start to finish. When a well known author disappears on the evening of special awards ceremony, everyone including the police are left puzzled. Ten months later the 10th book in her series is found by her wife and suddenly all the unanswered questions about her disappearance resurface. The narrator of her audio books finds enough discrepancies in this newly discovered novel ,to make her delve deeper into the mystery, setting in motion a chain of events that lead to a grim discovery. Full of subplots, intrigue, mystery and compelling prose, I never anticipated the thrilling climax.

Every time I thought I had it figured out, I was wrong! This book is full of twists, turns and surprises which includes the final twist which I would have never figured out. Phillipa Roberts is a very popular author who has a 9-book detective series featuring very popular DI Jane Tower with fans clamoring for book 10. Suddenly, Philippa disappears and cannot be found. Her wife, Fleur, discovers a completed manuscript of book 10 hidden away.

Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC of this very suspenseful, twisty read and I could not put down.

Thank you to #NetGalley for my copy of #TheNarrator by #KLSlater
I don’t know what I expected when I started reading this book as I hadn’t read the blurb but it hooked me from the getgo.
The narrator is Eve a divorced mother of one living back home with her mum.
When she is called upon to narrate the recently discovered audio book by Philippa Roberts an author who’ disappeared 10 months ago, she has no idea of the consequences.
A one sitting read.
