Internationally best selling author, Phillipa Roberts, has been missing for 10 months. The case has started to grow cold, as the police believe she probably just ran away to get away from her hectic life. When Phillipa's wife, Fleur, discovers a hidden draft of her next novel, the publishing company is eager to get it released.
Single mother, Eve, is thrilled when she is contacted to record the audio book of Phillipa's new book. Since her divorce, she and her five year old daughter, Scarlet, have been living with her widowed mother. She's eager to be working again in London. Unfortunately, her ex-husband, Hugo, has taken this opportunity to take Scarlet to stay with him and his new (pregnant) wife in their gorgeous cottage.
Eve cannot bear to be away from her daughter, but unfortunately, she has no choice, as she needs the new job. She's always considered Phillipa to be a friend, and the disappearance has always bothered her. When she reads the new book, she is unnerved by the obvious errors and changes. She can't help but wonder if Phillipa was trying to reach out somehow through this new book. In the process of trying to find answers, Eve finds herself and her family could be in danger.
This book moved sooooo slowly. I had to force myself to keep picking it up and continue reading. As expected, the ending was definitely a twist that I was not expecting. For a book to drag for almost 90% and then wrap up so quickly, it almost felt like the author got bored and just wanted to finish. I wish the build up had been more suspenseful. The ending felt rushed and convenient. I didn’t care for any of the characters, and although the ending did surprise me, it wasn't worth the tedious amount of reading to get there.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this. I did not expect the ending at all. You really never know what to expect.
I feel like I would have enjoyed it even more if I had listened to this one.
K.L. Slater is amazing at this stuff.
Thanks to NetGalley, Bookouture and K. L. Slater for the opportunity to read an advance copy of THE NARRATOR to be published January 6, 2023. This book had a very different plot to it and it was explosive! A famous and glitzy New York author is abducted on her way to an awards show and held captive by an unknown individual who wants her to write the 10th installment of her book satisfying the book contract.. The book is mainly from the Narrator’s perspective which involves a myriad of characters and unusual situations to say the least. It all comes to a twisted, totally unexpected end during which all of the characters are identified for who they are and their position in this clandestine operation of intrigue and mayhem. Another K. L. Slater original psych thriller to be added to her growing and glowing accomplishments. This is a winner!
My first book by K.L. Slater and I wasn't disappointed. I was fully engaged and found myself trying to find opportunities to get back to the book throughout the day in order to read more. I enjoyed her writing style and pacing. Serious plot twists....so much so that I went back to reread earlier parts to be sure I read them right the first time...I did, the writing was just so skillful that she had me making assumptions and interpretations that were not explicit in the text. Very very well crafted.
I also appreciated the well-developed characters. Some I liked a lot, like the strong female protagonist, and some I strongly disliked like her ex-husband--emotional attachments driven by very good writing.
I strongly recommend The Narrator. If you like mysteries or psychological thrillers, you will like it.
A classic thriller that leaves the reader wanting to keep reading, one to enjoy as the dark nights draw in and you’re looking for your next read
Good book! Wow! I definitely enjoyed reading this one! This book had suspense, intrigue, action, mystery, and so many crazy twists! The storyline was very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I highly recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me! And a big thank you to K.L. Slater for your amazing words! You've definitely become one of my go to author's! Don't miss out on this one!
It’s been 5 years since I read a KL Slater book. I’m not sure why but I was glad I received an ARC of her new novel The Narrator. I really enjoyed it, found myself captivated by the plot and completely drawn in with the added bonus of some twists. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
This was a great thrilling read. I never see the twist coming with these books. The storyline is easy to follow and so exciting.
Thank you for the chance to read this. I loved it
Another corker of a book from KL Slater! As always this was full of twists and turns and I didn't see that ending coming!! It gave me Misery vibes due to the storyline but it was great, I hated Hugo with a passion and Saskia was irritating until she came into her own. Eve was good, like a dog with a bone and this was the basis for the story. Short chapters kept me hooked and I raced through this one over the course of two nights....brilliant!
Another solid thriller from Slater. Suspenseful with so many great and shocking twists. I loved this book ANF gobbled it up from start to finish.
The Narrator is the best thriller I have read in a long time. I absolutely loved the twisty plot being set in the publishing world. The storyline kept me guessing right until the end. I couldn’t put it down as I was so desperate to know what had happened to author. It’s a fast paced read, and the writing is, as you’d expect from K L Slater title, completely word perfect. I would highly recommend this book.
The Narrator by K.L Slater
The book starts with author Philippa Roberts glamming up to receive an literary for her books.
She is unexpectedly picked up by someone she recognises , offered a drink to calm her nerves . She wakes up in a dark , damp basement , no dress and shoeless.
Newly single , lone mother , Eve who previously narrated Philippas books is surprised to find out a new book has come to light inspite of the disappearance of the author.
As Eve is narrating it, something is not quite right and she decides to get to the bottom of the mystery.
The book gives you different perspectives from the characters with lots of different points of view.
A great thriller with lots of twists
Loved this author so was excited to read this one!! Characters are very well written, and I raced through this book. Gripping from the start and everything that a psychological thriller should be. Dont take my word for it.......read it ! You wont be disappointed
Many thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC 5 WELL DESERVED STARS!
“The Narrator” is a mystery/thriller by KL Slater. This book started with a rather hooking beginning. I liked story, but felt that in the beginning the pacing was a bit slow as the background was set for the players. This book has a number of red herring characters, which made it interesting to try to figure out what was going on. I cannot say that I was thrilled by one part of the ending, though - in an odd way - it was acceptable. But the “who done it” had a surprise twist, which did take me literally by surprise. I liked the character of Eve and her daughter, Scarlet. I really liked this book for the, mostly, simplicity of the plot - what happened to Phillipa - and the attempt to figure out just what happened. A great read that held my attention - and, based upon other reviews, I may need to now read Ms. Slater’s other books.
The Narrator was quite slow paced but soon picked up, it was full of mystery and was so intense I couldn't put it down.
The Narrator by K.L. Slater is another great book by this author. I have passed on some of her most recent books, but this one piqued my interest so much. I love books about authors, writing, and the writing life. This book takes off quickly with the disappearance of a famous writer. The narrator of her audio books becomes involved in the search, and the story begins with plenty of twists and turns. There are plenty of complicated relationships here to dissect, the past and present, and the book held my interest. You don't know who to believe. A great read and highly recommend.
I devoured this book in one sitting, I just couldn’t put it down when I started it.
K.L Slater is one of my favourite authors and this new book certainly didn’t disappoint. I was hooked for page 1.
Plenty of intrigue, suspense, amazing writing and wonderful characters. The ending is fabulous and one that I’d urge anyone to try to guess and I’m sure they won’t be able to.
Another 5 star read and one that I’d definitely recommend.
Eve is a narrator of audio books for bestselling author Phillipa Roberts, who has been missing for months. When another book by Phillipa is found after she has vanished, Eve can't help but think something isn't quite right about the writing style. Is there a clue to her disappearance in the book? What follows is a dangerous and shocking journey to find the truth.
Another brilliant book by K L Slater. I couldn't stop turning the pages until the shocking ending. Full of twists and turns, it was brilliant!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
This is an addictive read i hated real life while i was reading this every spare moment went into reading this book. This is a gripping mystery and thriller and i was on the edge of my seat, i love a book that draws you in and you don't read it you live it.
my poor emotions are still in upheaval and i'm a little lost now, these characters are complicated and full of secrets just waiting for you to find out. if you like twisty stories with a lot going for them this is the book for you. i think i may have found a new favourite author.
Thank you to Netgalley/Bookouture/K.L Slater for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Netgalley & Bookouture for an eARC of The Narrator by K.L. Slater! I discovered this author this year and now every time I see her name I hit request as quickly as possible.
Eve is an audiobook narrator, particularly for a popular detective series by best selling author Philippa Roberts. However, Philippa’s been missing for 10 months, so the books have stopped, and Eve also finds herself single after her husband Hugo had a fling and is now pregnant with his new girlfriend.
Just when Eve is about to give up, a secret book of Philippa’s has been found, and Eve is called back to narrate the 10th in the series. As she’s reading it, though, there’s something hidden in the pages of the book. Some clues to the author’s disappearance.
I flew through this book, it’s super bingeable and twisty with alternating POVs that will keep you intrigued and guessing. I really appreciate this fresh plot for a thriller novel, unusual yet so engaging. I genuinely didn’t see the final “twist” coming, and I always love when that happens. I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next!
