This is my first Slater book and I have become her fan!!
I was glued right from the prologue. The plot by itself, though not unique or unheard of, is well built, and the mystery is revealed piece by piece.
Slater has developed relatable, distinct, and well-developed characters. The multiple POVS added to the drama and made the mystery even more intriguing.
The Narrator packs in all - complicated relationships, a multitude of characters, red herrings, unexpected twists, and a thrilling pace. Overall, a fabulous read. Highly recommended.

K L Slater knocks it out of the park yet again with her nail-biting new chiller, The Narrator.
Being a single mum is tough and nobody knows this better than Eve. Having put her acting dreams on hold for her beloved daughter, Scarlet, Eve is willing to do whatever it takes to give her child the best possible start in life. Putting Scarlet first and herself last is not a problem for Eve, but with money being tight, the single mum finds herself needing to do something to keep food on the table and a roof over both their heads. When a job to narrate a book by missing author Philippa Roberts comes up, Eve jumps at the opportunity, but she soon finds herself realising that truth can be even stranger than fiction…
Taking on the job means leaving Scarlet with her dad and his perfect girlfriend in their perfect home. Eve is completely cut up about this, but this job is the chance she had been waiting for and she is not about to turn this down. As Eve begins narrating the book, she is struck by a strange feeling that there could be a message hidden in this book. As her suspicions increase, Eve wonders whether there might have been a specific reason why she had been chosen to narrate this book that might tie in with Philippa’s disappearance. But just what could Eve’s connection to the missing writer be?
As unusual events begin to unfold, Eve is sure she is being watched and when her room is searched, her fears are intensified. Eve needs to find out what happened to Philippa and when she receives a phone call from her ex’s frantic girlfriend, she realises that if she doesn’t find Philippa soon, then she will never see Scarlet ever again!
K L Slater’s books never fail to keep me up all night and The Narrator is certainly no different. As always, K L Slater has written a tense and heart-stopping thriller full of twists and turns I did not see coming. My heart was in my throat the whole time I was reading this book and I found myself unable to stop myself from devouring The Narrator in a single sitting.
A first-class thriller from one of the genre’s finest, The Narrator is another triumph for K L Slater.
Full of twists and a shocker of an ending. I loved spending an afternoon on the beach reading this!
Many thanks to Bookotoure and to Netgalley for providing me with a galley in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is an author that I never hesitate to pick up. I have enjoyed reading her books from the first one. i enjoy how she pulls me into the story with her great writing skills and attention to details. This is a well written story where the twists and turns had me coming back for more.. I enjoyed how fast paced and engaging this story is. The characters pulled me into their world with ease and I had no problems picturing myself in their world. What happens when in search of a perfect life you chance losing the one things that means the most to you? There is great growth with this plot which made it easy to read and added to the entertainment value of the story. I really enjoyed this story. I highly recommend this book and this author.
Just like always k.l. Slater steals your mind and turns your world upside down till your question rather you even know your own name .
I’ve been reading a lot of books lately that are centred around the book world themselves. It’s a big draw for a book worm like me! This usually isn’t the main premise of the book but it’s enough to draw me in. If that’s not your thing, don’t worry. The Narrator has many more strings to it than the publishing world where, to be honest, it doesn’t go into much detail.
As with other books from K.L. Slater, The Narrator is a smooth, easy read. It doesn’t take long to get to know the characters and get caught up in the plot line. However, I have to admit that I would have liked a bit more complexity to. While the plot was comprised of many different elements all coming together to produce a good ending, some of these elements weren’t very deep. I felt I was lacking information as to why a certain character did something. This was most obvious in the ending, which I felt was rather rushed. I enjoyed how the author concluded the story, but I would have needed a bit more to truly say I loved it.
I did quite like Eve. As the main narrator, we are with her most. Besides enjoying her amateur sleuthing, I found her to be a good reflection on some societal thoughts. For instance, when her ex-husband shames her for wanting a career rather than staying at home with their child full-time. To be honest, it was also refreshing to have a single mother lead who didn’t become embroiled in some sort of love story. This book sticks right with the action and I appreciate it for that. The rest of the characters in this book are also rather interesting, although more of Chad, a Phillipa Roberts super fan, would have been great.
Although I was looking for something a bit more work The Narrator, it certainly kept my attention. I flew through it and it was the perfect read when you want a bit of action but also something generally easy on the brain.
Another fantastic book from this author. Fantastic read that had me hooked from the first page. It was different to her other books but that’s not always a bad thing. Lots of twists and turns in the plot.
THE NARRATOR By K.L. Slater
Being a single mother is tough, but I’d do anything for my little girl Scarlet. I’d given up on my career as a voice actor when the call came, but suddenly I was the new narrator for a secret book from bestselling author Philippa Roberts, who has been missing for eight months. It was a lifeline for me and my daughter.
I hated that it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex in his perfect new home with his perfect new girlfriend. But I knew it was the right thing to do.
But as I start reading Philippa’s new novel, I start to wonder if it’s no coincidence that I’ve been chosen to narrate it. There’s something hidden in the pages of this book, I’m sure of it. Some clue to Philippa’s disappearance. And I don’t feel safe. I think I’m being watched. My room has been searched.
And then my ex’s girlfriend calls in tears and everything starts to click together. If I don’t find answers fast, I’ll lose more than my second chance. I’ll lose my daughter.

Thank you, K.L. Slater and Bookouture , for a copy.
Im a huge fan of K L Slater and Im never disappointed. The plot grabbed me straight away . There were some surprise twists and a great ending. I certainly didnt see it coming and unpredictability is a winner in my eyes.
Woooo, that was... something! Psychological thriller in the best version! We have a "bookish" world, cause we have a manuscript of missing author and something is not right. The narrator of all her previous books suspects that this book is not written by Philipa. And then, she receives, by mistake, the inital version. The raw, emotional, authentic story. And this can put in danger not only her, but also her daughter...
It keeps me awake all night. I can't just put it down, I had to know more and get deeper into this story. I'm truly impresed how the plot is unpredictable, twisted and written in the way, that makes readers feel like they are just in the eye of the hurricane.
Awesome, highly recommended.
This was a brilliant thriller with a range of characters and plot twists. I was hooked on the story and surprised by the ending. A must-read suspense.
Philippa, a well known author, disappears on the night of an awards ceremony. Her friend Eve, who used to narrate all Philippa’s audio books, is concerned for her welfare. When a manuscript is discovered at Philippa’s house, Eve is asked to return to work to narrate it, Eve has been struggling since her husband left her and her father died. Eve and her young daughter Scarlet are now living with her mother. On reading the manuscript Eve is convinced that Philippa wrote it indicating clues that could lead to her whereabouts. Eve needs the cash so has to leave Scarlet with her ex husband and his girlfriend while she travels to London to narrate the book. Eve doesn’t feel safe in London and when her rented room is ransacked she realises that her and Scarlet maybe in danger. This was an enjoyable read with a few red herrings and a twist at the end that I didn’t see coming.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
As always another cracker from slater, brilliant plot and characters.
Well written and highly recommend
Absolutely loved this book , could not leave it down , a lot of twists and turns and so well written. I loved the way the story unfolded from the present to going back to earlier times . I have read other books by this brilliant author and they all are so good , leaving you guessing right to the end. Would really highly recommend this book as a must read.
At first, reading the synopsis, I thought, not another COHO "Verity" But when I started reading, I found out quickly that it had nothing to do with "Verity".
It's soooo much better !
Suspense of the finest !
Would highly recommend !
Yet another page turner by K L Slater
I enjoyed this book , as usual , I would not expect anything less , this had a great twist that i really did not see coming . This was everything I expect when I pick up a book by this author , it amazes me how most of her books have such an original idea , I wonder where she will take us next
Excellent read Thank you
ere’s nothing I enjoy more than a tight psychological thriller. A book that has you guessing right until the very end. A read that twists and turns, where you don’t know quite what you’re looking at until the author choses to reveal it to you. That is what I was hoping to get out of The Narrator by K.L. Slater. And, although I did enjoy coming along for the ride, it didn’t quite leave me gasping at the end.
The Narrator was a tight, well told story that hit all the right beats and happily led you past red herrings and puzzle pieces. But, it was Eve our main protagnist’s, frustration and anger with her manipulative ex-husband that was the most compelling and emotionally honest part of this book. At one point I was fully willing and eager to believe that someone as despicable as him was fully capable of terrible things, even if it made no actual sense. I just disliked him that much.
But, it didn’t quite get passed average. The main issue I have with this book is that it never really gathered any tension or feelings of danger. It won’t leave you on the edge of your seat, desperate to know what will happen and if our protagonist will ever be the same. The mystery unfolds as Eve plods along solving it. The grave danger to her daughter, as promised in the blurb doesn’t ever materialise. It was more Miss Marple than Misery.
But, if you want a well told, easy to read thriller this is a solid, if uninspired entry into the genre. Perfect if you want an interesting mystery, but aren’t in the mood for anything intense.
KL Slater has rapidly become and auto read for me! Every single book has twists and turns you don’t see coming, and this one was no exception!
The Narrator by K.L.Slater
Another unique plot from K.L.Slater. Full of mystery and suspense and many characters to point the finger at that I didn’t see that ending coming!
