I finished this in less than 24 hours, that’s how drawn in I was. I hadn’t heard of this author before but now I will be reading the rest of their books. The characters were likable (aside from those specific two) and the story was new and fresh.
This book was not the best that I have read. The characters were under developed and flat. It was supposed to be a thriller but it wasn’t thrilling.
This was a very obvious story, and I also didn't find it very original.
There was a lot of descriptive sentences which grated on me, as they were unnecessary, things like, she put the eggs on a plate and went to the drawer to get the knife and fork.
The story itself, although obvious was decent enough, but it could definitely have been better without the unnecessary sentences. I'm afraid this one just wasn't for me
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
This book is described as a gripping thriller but I did not find it reached the promised standard. I thought the quality of the writing was juvenile at times: 'bit of make-up' is a simple term to avoid giving knowledgeable detail as though the author is unfamiliar with make-up and couldn't make the effort to research further, 'smirk' (a smug or conceited smile) for what is supposed to be an attractive smile and Sam's constant use of the endearment 'darlin' as though he was Laura's grandfather. Laura does not seem credible: she didn't want to tell an applicant that she wasn't 'the right fit' to nurse her father, even though a professional with experience of patients with dementia would understand this, she treats Bella as a best friend rather than an employee she barely knows and answers personal questions without thought. At one stage she exchanges several sentences with Andrei and only then notices he's only wearing shorts and no shirt! Laura is an author and there are paragraphs of the work she's doing, we're even told 'people don't know how much is involved in writing a book' and criticism of those who won't pay full price for it.
I read almost 50% before giving up.
Can you trust the ones you hired to care for your loved ones? This is the dilemma that Laura finds herself in when she begins to realise that the caregivers she hired to help with her father's dementia may not e a caring as she hoped.
I found this a relatively quick read. The story was slow with few plot twists and overall was a bit predictable.
I really liked the premise of this book, however that is just about where it stops. The main character moves home to take care of her dad after her divorce. By taking care of him she means of course having someone else do it. She is a romance writer and this is told and discussed at great length every time she even mentions writing or really anything. She is a dish mop of a woman that just believes everything that is said and clearly has no original thoughts of her own either. The characters were all abysmal, especially the groundskeeper that calls Laura darling every five seconds. I am not sure how I kept reading this drivel, but it is clearly on me. This was one of the worst books I have had the displeasure to read. Thanks for the ARC, NetGalley.
The Night Nurse was an easy read with a dash of intrigue. I enjoyed some of the "romance", but didn't like the constant use of the word "darlin'". I'd definitely read something from this author again if I wanted a light and easy read.
The night nurse is another page turning physcological thriller by Cole Baxter and it really is a page turner. I can't get enough! The characters play out there parts so well that you believe it's real.
The book was very slow moving. Not many twists and turns. And darlin was used way too many times. I liked Sam but I couldn’t hear him say darlin one more time. I hated him every time he said it.
Good read. Quick, easy, and a twist of a thriller, family drama and love story in one. Well written characters sweep you through the story and have you waiting for the next twist. Cole Baxter is quickly becoming a favorite author and I look forward to what he comes out with next.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you NetGalley, Cole Baxter and Inkubator Books for hearing my honest review. Looking forward to reading more with you

Oh My! How can the perfect solution become such a twisted tale? Dementia is taking over her dad so Laura moves home. But when she hires a brother and sister team to take care of her dad things become a bit odd. Her dad takes a turn for the worst and Laura finds her food is drugged. This is one of those books you can anticipate the train wreck but can't look away. I was totally engrossed.
I really wanted to like this, but it became a little bit too predictable for me. The story was well-written, and I liked the characters, but was disappointed in the twists.
Thank you for the opportunity to review this book, the premise for this story was gripping but the execution for this read was lacking somewhat, and it dragged a little in places.
Thrilling and utterly compulsive! An incredible read, impossible to put down. Incredible storytelling! Recommend you read this book! A captivating story that I was drawn into from the first page a propulsive read that never let me go from start to finish! Giving it four stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ohhhh so not my story! Could not get into it.the slow pace to fast pace then slow again totally messed it up for me!
Started off ok, but then I found myself skipping sections as it was all very predictable.
I didn't feel like it was written for adults, or even by an adult at times, it felt quite childish
and didn't really have any depth.
Dissapointing
I think the description of dementia care and the challenges it poses were extremely well written, having personal experience of this. It is an important issue to highlight and the first time I have seen this in a novel.
I found myself irritated by Sam's "darlin" which was overused and grated on me, it made him seem insincere when he was not supposed to be that type of character.
I absolutely loved this book!! Cole Baxter has always been one of my favorites authors and this book was amazing!! I enjoyed every minute of this book. It had me hooked from the very beginning!!! I couldn’t put it down.
I absolutely loved this book. It hooked me and kept me turning pages until I was done. Finished it in two days! The character development was strong, and the premise was unique enough that it didn't feel like anything else I've read.
The Night Nurse deals with dementia and realizing you can't be a sole caregiver for someone that requires round the clock care. So what do you do? Hire someone to help you out. Laura knows she need help so she hires a brother/sister team of nurses to care for her father. Everything seems great at first until things go from bad to worse. Will Laura find out what is happening before it's too late?
