I was a little lost at the beginning of this one. Hugo’s opening chapter was long winded and confusing. But once I got into the story and got used to the multiple POVs and multiple voices I really enjoyed the story.
Kasia is devoted the the French Resistance and risks her life to protect a young Polish girl. Hugo gets saddled with Kasia living with him because of a friend and he has no idea what she’s involved in and what he’s getting himself into. But even through the dangers and the struggles of war, they protect each other and form quite a unique family of sorts.
I ended up really enjoying Carly’s writing style and look forward to checking out more of her books.
One of my favourite genres of writing, this novel is similar to many out there but is just as enjoyable.
The addition of the child, Elodie really adds to the drama and poignancy of the story. Hugo, the male lead character, struck me as almost comic at the start but I warmed to him and begun to understand his reactions better as his life story became apparent. Well told, giving us just a little more each chapter and beautifully read in the audio version. I will be sure to look out for further books by this author in the future.
All the Courage we have Found by Carly Schabowski is a beautifully written story about a radio operator, a small child, and a man looking to find himself. Set during WWII, it showcases the bravery of the men and women who fought the battle behind the scenes. They weren’t in the trenches, but they were essential. The narrator did an excellent job and I could’ve kept on listening to more when it was over. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher.
I loved this historical World War Two novel, which was so interesting and enjoyable. The book is set mainly in France, and we see the lives of Kasia, Elodie and Hugo, and how they come together to help people get through the war. The three of them have had hard lives, where they have lost loved ones, so they are grieving, but they are strong people who work together to bring light to others.
The book is exciting, thrilling, engrossing, heartbreaking, heartwarming and full of suspense. It will draw you in and keep you on edge, until the very last page.
The narrator of the book is amazing, and she did a great job.
I recommend this book highly!
I really like reading books like this, as they are eye opening, and they help me to appreciate my own life more, the people in my life, and all the things that I have.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
This is a good read, and a solid addition to the saturated WWII genre. I was swept along by the courage and bravery of the characters and felt gripped by the story. There are some tough scenes as you would expect, and these are powerful and poignant.
I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to fans of historical fiction.
All the Courage We Have Found by Carly Schabowski
Narrated by Daphne Kouma and Philippe Spall
When Kasia, working for the French Resistance in Poland, gets her chance to travel to France to work as a radio operator, she is ready to leave immediately. But she has a last minute companion, a little mute Polish girl who needs to be smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto. Elodie is the fake name given to the little girl and her new identity will be as Kasia's daughter.
In France, Kasia and Elodie are to live in a farmhouse with Hugo, a writer who has lost his will to write. Hugo has practically lost his will to live and along with drinking to excess, barely takes care of himself or his property. But he does help the French Resistance, with much grumbling and complaining. He is not happy to have Kasia and Elodie in his midst but he owes a debt that he must pay.
This is a story about finding one's voice and it's also a story about how we must eventually face our greatest pain. It's about the need to forgive ourselves and others and the need to remember so that we can move forward. Often what we think about ourselves and the way we think others see us isn't reality.
Kasia's new work as a radio operator is so dangerous that her lifespan is measured in weeks. She comes to care for Hugo and loves little Elodie and must make choices that will protect them even if it means she might never see them again. I am touched by these characters and didn't want to leave them when the story ends. It's a heartbreaking but beautiful story.
This is my second book by this author and I plan to read more of her stories. The narrators of this book are very good. I've listened to other books narrated by Daphne Kouma and will listen to more in the future. Philippe Spall is new to me and I hope to listen to more of his work if it comes along. I feel like they fit the story very well.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for this ARC.
The Polish Pianist
In 1942 the Nazi's have taken over Poland and France. Kasia has been working with the resistance in Poland. She has found out she will be smuggled to France to be a radio operator or Pianist as they were called in the resistance. At the last minute in the ghetto she meets a girl with one brown eye and one green eye, which are eyes like her sisters. She does not speak. Kasia takes her to France with her as she cannot leave her behind.
In France Kasia begins her job operating the radio for the resistance. She meets Hugo who reluctantly takes them in . I love how the story around Hugo, Kasia and Elodie evolves. Such a beautiful story.
This is an exciting book filled with adventure, courage and heartbreak. It is a story of love lost and love found and of some fantastic people you will meet along the way. I love the characters of Kasia and Hugo and Elodie. I loved it all the way through but I especially loved the ending.
It is a book about the resistance and the people that risked their lives and those that lost their lives to fight against the Nazi's. The fight for freedom was worth risking everything.
I enjoyed this story, the narrator on the audio book was very good. The pronunciation was awesome and the voice was pleasant to listen to. I would recommend this story.
Thanks to Carly Schabowski for writing a great story, to Bookouture Audio for publishing it and to NetGalley for providing me with a copy to read and review.
In a sea of World War II fiction, Carly Schabowski's novel didn't only manage to poke its head out of the water but get the attention of readers through its fantastic and believable storytelling. The story of Kasia, Elodie, and Hugo is heartbreaking and relatable, even though most readers didn't experience those times. The author's skill will make you vividly visualize the background, and the characters, and even feel their pain. An outstanding blend of drama and suspense in a historical setting.
My review is based on the audiobook version of the book, flawlessly narrated by Daphne Kouma and Philippe Spall.
This is amazing story with so many angles from the war. I loved the personal feel to the story and how it realistically it involved the characters. There are so many parts of war that one really doesn’t hear about unless you speak to a person who was lived in that time. I know this is fiction but it does give you a dose of reality of how things happened during a war. I highly recommend this book.
Another heartwarming historical fiction set during the second world war in France. It is a story of a writer who lost his wife and child, a child who lost her family and a woman who lost her sister and how the three come together while also defying the Nazis. A one-time read for sure.
All the Courage We Have Found by Carly Schabowski Narrated by: Daphne Kouma, Philippe Spall was a good audio book however, sadly it did not have the sparkle of Carly's other books I have read in the past. I read a lot of WWII historical fiction this storyline was good and the characters were good but did not draw me in.
When Kasia is told that she is being sent to France to work as a radio operator for a resistance group she plans to go alone. But the night before she is set to leave Warsaw, she meets a young mute girl in a ghetto who bears a striking resemblance to someone she loves and she can not leave her behind. She names the girl Elodie and smuggles her into France where the two are housed with a widower named Hugo. Hugo is reluctant to take them in but he quickly begins to enjoy their company and three of them begin to form a bond. When Kasia is forced to flea the area after the Nazis intercept her radio transmissions it is unclear whether or not she will ever be reunited with her new found family. All the Courage We Have Found is a beautiful and heartbreaking story about chosen family, the bonds between sisters and the hardships of war.
This novel is set mainly in France and takes place during the later half of WWII. The story is told from the alternating perspective of Kasia, Hugo, and Elodie and catalogs their experiences before and during the war. Their back stories are revealed a little bit at a time providing lots of character development for each of them. I enjoyed seeing the three of them grow closer throughout the novel but particularly enjoyed the relationship between Hugo and Elodie. I listened to this book and enjoyed the different narrators for each character. The novel focused mainly on the relationship between the different characters and while I enjoyed that, I would have liked a little more detail on the work of the radio operators and the war itself. The ending also felt a bit rushed and could have had more emotion. The plot reached a climax and then went straight to the resolution without much falling action to tell us how the characters got to that point. Some of that detail was added later but I would have liked that information upfront to add more drama and emotion to the final events of the story.
This book wasn’t what I expected. From the synopsis I expected it to be more about the resistance fighters and the dangers the radio operators where up against as they avoided the nazis. But it was actually more of a family drama/love story?
Main character, Kasia, is a French resistance radio operator. She comes upon Elodie, an orphan from the Warsaw ghetto, and decides to keep her. Hugo reluctantly agrees to take in a French resistance worker for a night and it’s Kasia and Elodie that shows up. Hugo wasn’t happy about it because he had recently lost his wife and daughter. He ends up raising Elodie and this book is the touching story of their transitioning life and bond. Hugo and Kasia fall in love, although I don’t feel a chemistry between them. I gave the book 4 stars because it’s well written and the characters are likable and well developed. It just wasn’t my thing because I don’t care much for drama/love stories. And it moved it but slow for my taste. Maybe it needs a new synopsis. I really was expecting a thrilling on the edge of my seat story about a French resistance worker.
I read quite a lot of WW2 historical fiction, so there's got to be something different or special to stand out. Unfortunately I felt this novel just didn't have that something special. I felt it was stilted and I couldn't connect to the characters. It was also very predictable, so no surprise outcomes to keep the reader gripped. I listened to this on audiobook and the female narrator was awful. She had a very jolly, happy voice, which didn't fit with much of the narrative. The male narrator was good. On the whole, this was a fairly bland colourless story. My sincere thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy in exchange for an honest unbiased review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the audio version of this book. Everything I write is of my own person thoughts feelings and opinions. I am not compensated for my review in any way. I always go into books without reading the information blurb on them. I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed how even in the hurt of the war good things still came about. This book had a few different stories/lives they followed but they all intertwined and came together to form a beautiful story of love-life- loss- tragedy to triumph.
I did enjoy this audiobook and loved the characters, even the grumpy ones.
This was more of a romance than others I have listened to so would be great for people wanting a romantic historical fiction.
The narrator was excellent and made the story come alive for me.
Thank you Net Galley for an audio ARC of All The Courage We Have Found by Carly Schabowski. Although the storyline was fine, it did not draw me in. Characters were good, I had trouble staying in the story.
The premise of this book intrigued me, with Polish resistance fighter Kasia going to occupied France, young Jewish orphan in tow, to live with quirky, somewhat reclusive Hugo. I liked the multiple points of view, especially with one of the main characters being a child. The writing is solid, but the pacing felt choppy at times, and there were a few too many convenient situations for it to be believable enough.
The narration, however, was a complete miss for me. The main characters are Polish and French, sometimes narrating from the first person perspective, yet the audiobook narrators spoke with British English accents and mispronounced names of people and places. This artistic choice made no sense and was a huge disappointment for me as a native Polish speaker.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for providing me with an advance listeners copy to review!
I read a lot of WWII historical fiction and find the circumstances the characters are in heartbreaking. Each one has a different story to tell and I learn something new every time. However, with the numbers of books I read in this genre, to stand out the book really has to grab you; it's not enough to have a great premise, which this book does, but I have to fall in love with the characters, which I could not do. I felt for them and understood their motivations but they seemed cold, not really connected to each other so I couldn't really connect with them either. It doesn't make it a bad story; it was good but not great.
