Wow. A very twisty ending. Totally not the answer I had anticipated. There are very few mysteries in verse. It’s definitely something that should be done more, and is done here quite well. I love how the author raises questions about safety and threat. Also, she does an amazing job of juxtaposing natural beauty and the pain of human violence. Stark and lush at the same time. I very much enjoyed this one. Fans of ‘We Were Liars’ and ‘This is Our Story’ will like this one.
This is a book I feel like I need to read a second time to fully understand. Told in verse, Wolfpack follows a group of girls living in a cult trying to solve the mystery of their friend’s disappearance.
One of the most interesting aspects of this book is the point of view from which it is told. It’s as if it’s a collective first-person. “We” did this and “we” thought that. This point of view works very well, tying in with both the title and the setting of the book. The girls seem to have their own cult within the larger one. Because of this point of view and the fact that the characters are all named after flowers, I did have some trouble keeping up with who was who, which is another reason I think a second read would help me process what happens.
I also would’ve liked to know more about the cult’s leader and what the cult was like. I do think it’s interesting that the story didn’t end with the girls escaping, as I feel like that may be an expected plot point in a book about a cult.
Overall, I think this is a book that requires readers to really pay attention and stay on their toes to understand the characters and their world.
