The Quiet Tenant is an absolute page turner of a novel that will take you on an dark and brooding ride til the very end. Superbly written with pose that will haunt you long after you've put down the book.
Told from different points of view, one of them being a woman named Rachel who has been held captive for the past 5 years, you begin to feel the fear right along side of her.
I think The Quiet Tenant is going to go on and be a very popular book this year!

Holy moly, this book is unlike anything I’ve read. I struggle to find words for a summary so as not to spoil anything. What, to my mind is the “twist” comes fairly early on in the story which you would think make the rest somewhat of a let down. However, there were moments of such high tension, I would have to take a brief break before moving on. This is definitely the best story I’ve read this year and ranks right up there with some of the best ever!

Amazing!! Loved this twisted story as it jumped between multiple women / victims. Such a fast page turner, and SO hard to put down! I couldn’t believe this is a debut author. Be on the lookout because I feel this will be the start of a great career!
As noted on the cover, the trigger warnings are real… Abduction, rape, murder, lots of psychological torture.
Overall an adrenaline fueled thriller! Many thanks to NetGalley and publishers for the advanced reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review.

The book's description said all about the story minus the ending. It's not much of a mystery as it is more of a crime novel. Written from the perspective of Rachel, Emily and Cecelia. The style of writing pushed the storyline along. Rachel, Emily and Cecelia's characters were raw and colorful, especially Rachel. They were well-developed. I find that Aiden's character has no history. There was no backstory, and his character was one-dimensional. There was somewhat of a catalyst for Aiden's action; however, I don't see it as a real catalyst. After all, serial killers are psychopaths. I believe they are born that way and not made into it. He never stopped and then started, so where is the beginning point? The ending was not as satisfying as I had hoped for. What makes Rachel so special? She's still alive opposed to eight other women. That would have been Aiden's backstory.
Thank you to Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor, Knopf and NetGalley for letting me read this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. From page one I was hooked. The absolutely beautiful prose, a book written marvelously, in English, by a French author. I'm blown away by how masterfully the author writes, it's an artwork and not every writer has the talent to just absorb the reader into their work. I seriously loved this book! If not for the unique plot and the genius telling of the story from multiple different narrators, the writing itself was enough to hold my attention.
This story is told from alternating points of view, from different women all connected by one man... the woman being held captive by a serial killer, his thirteen year old daughter, his new girlfriend, and the many women he has murdered. We see the drastically different lives and intense thoughts of all of these women and how they fit into the life of Aidan, the main male character and unexpected serial killer.
"Rachel," a woman kidnapped and held captive for five years- does everything she can to continue to be the sole survivor of a killer no one knows exists. Continually brainwashed and abused, she is moved from a hidden shed to a room in a new house, where her captor brings her after the recent death of his wife. This is where she lives by a strict set of rules and remains quietly handcuffed and locked out of sight. Pretending to be a "friend of a friend" renting a room, her life depends on not raising suspicion from her captors teen daughter.
Cecilia, the grieving daughter of Aidan, is navigating her new normal without her mother, recently lost to cancer. Unsure of the strange new woman in the house, she soon forms an unlikely friendship with her.
Emily, the bartender and owner of the town restaurant, falls in love with the town handyman... a recent widow, a hardworking lineman, a man everyone adores, a gentle and loving father... on the outside.
As we see the lives of the three main women in Aidan's life unfold in this small town, secrets are shared and bonds are formed, but are they strong enough to save them all before it's too late?
Eight women share their last moments of life before being murdered, but time is ticking and another woman is being targeted as the next kill.
This is a slow-paced, but captivating read! At times the narration is heartbreaking and gut-wrenching, but also just as fierce and powerful. The best read of the year so far!

If you like locked room thrillers and slow burn psychological thrillers than this book is for you. This is a dark, creepy, atmospheric, and chilling psychological thriller about a serial killer who has taken in one of his captives and moved her into his home as an "old friend" with his daughter. The book is told for the points of view of the the women he murdered, his captive, his girlfriend and his daughter which added complexity to the story. The book was just a bit slow for me and I wanted more character development. Rachel, his captive, perspectives of trying to survive and staying alive were heart wrenching and mind blowing as she develops almost a codependent relationship with her kidnapper. The fear, drama, and danger builds and will have you wanting to know what will happen next. Will Rachel survive or will she be another number in this serial killers victim list?

I snatched this one up TOO quickly when it became available on Netgalley!
From the start, I loved the multiple POVs that alternated between presenting Aidan as both the good and bad guy of the story. Each main character/ narrator really had their own unique voice and perspective, which kept me extremely hooked while reading.
There were many rules Rachel needed to learn in order to stay alive in the house, and the more we learned about them the more I worried she would never actually find her way out of her captor’s home.
This was a solid, entertaining read and I will definitely be checking out future books from this author!

I had a hard time putting this one down! Aiden is a model citizen, but he holds some dark secrets. His story is told by the woman he keeps prisoner, his daughter, and his girlfriend. Occasionally, we hear from other victims. If you're looking for a quick-to-read thriller, this is it!
I received a free copy of the book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I have really gotten into thrillers lately and so many follow the same roadmap (which is fine by me, because that road is always good!) but with The Quiet Tenant, it was different and that was awesome. I loved the way this story was written and how the chapters shifted points of view, but continued the story really well. I liked the way this was a serial killer thriller with the vibe of a domestic thriller mixed. I know some wanted to more of Aiden, but I felt this book was perfect in focusing on the women and the story of what was happening and not on the killer himself. Great read!!

I thought this book was well written with lovely sentences. I didn't connect with any of the characters but I know from experience that sometimes that is just because I read the book at the wrong time for me.

While I enjoyed this one for what it is, I was also left with a lot of questions at the end. It starts off quick - short chapters that are fully engaging and quite good! But as it went on, it slowly became too ridiculous for me. I found it unbelievable and I was extremely frustrated with a lot of the main character's choices. I wanted to scream at her and wake her up...I guess I really prefer for my captured victims to be survivors and Rachel didn't feel that way to me. I wasn't attached to her or her decisions so that makes this one a hard book to love and recommend from me.

This book was incredible!!! Five heart-pounding stars as I devoured every single chapter of this book, staying up late into the night to get to the end. A psychological thriller that delves into the very real fears that every woman faces, especially when traveling alone. Personally, I have always been hyperaware of the very real dangers women face, just walking alone in an isolated area, even in broad daylight.
This was the author's debut novel in English, and wow, she did such a fantastic job. While I wouldn't classify this as a typical thriller, it was such a fresh approach to a suspenseful novel.
The one thing I felt the book was missing would be taking a deeper look into Aidan, to help us understand the "why" behind his actions. I felt that was an unfinished aspect of the storyline.
Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! This book is out 6/20/23.

You will either hate or love this book. I loved it. There are many reasons to hate it from other readers' points of view - they say the prose is too much, too flowery and descriptive. They say the characters are too much, and they don't have sympathy for them. To this, I say, pppppfffffftttt!!
This is a novel, told from the perspective of women who love a serial killer. The first voice and main one is a woman known as Rachel. She has been held captive by the killer for five years. She has learned to play by his rules and survive. She is the only one of his victims he chose to keep. All the rest are dead and gone.
Second is his daughter, Cecilia. Does she know what is going on? Why does she readily accept that they are going to have a stranger living in their house with very little information about her? Is her father abusing her?
Third is his new "girlfriend," Emily. She is a little obsessed and unhinged, which explains much of her insane behaviors. This one I felt very little sympathy for. She was quite the idiot, IMO.
We also hear from the other victims of the serial killer, Aidan. Their voices are heard from the grave as clues to Aidan's behaviors.
Ahh, Aidan, what makes you tick? He is beloved in his community. Everyone knows and loves him, feels sorry for him because his wife has just died after a long battle with cancer. They even have a freakin' marathon to benefit Aidan and his daughter to help pay the medical bills left behind! The town judge gives him a place to live after his in-laws kick them out of the home they lived in, which they apparently owned. I would have liked to know more about the in-laws and their opinion of Aidan since it seems they did not care for him very much and were quite distant from their very ill daughter and their granddaughter. There is more to that story, I am sure.
The ending was satisfying. There was much tension and many jolts throughout the novel. I highly recommend this first novel and look forward to many more by Ms. Michallon.
Thank you to Knopf and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

This book is the epitome of thriller! Such a fast paced read and I was totally riveted the entire time. The varying perspectives and look into the life of a captured woman reminded me a lot of Room. Towards the end, I can’t help but feel there is a missing layer with Emily’s character but that’s very minor to me. Overall an awesome read!! Thanks Net Galley and the publisher for the ARC!

The Quiet Tenant is told through the voices of three women who are involved with Aidan Thomas: his daughter, his love interest, and the woman he intended to kill, but has imprisoned for five years.
This novel was hard to put down once I started reading it, especially once I got about halfway through. The characters are strongly written, and the tension builds throughout the story. It touches on a lot of topical issues- power of men over women, the prevalence of violence against women, but without taking away from the flow of the storyline. I hope to see more from this new-to-me author in the future!
Thank you to NetGalley and Knopf Publishing Group for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest feedback.

Seems like I read this type of story so many times before . Author does keep interesting until the last 50 pages .
Can pretty much figure out what's going to happen.
Thanks net galley for advance copy

It is the stuff of nightmares. Clemence Michallon begins her debut thriller by describing the life of a woman who has been held captive by a man-- a man who is liked by everyone in his "other" life.
He tells the woman her name will be "Rachel." He mistreats her in about every way imaginable.
The Quiet Tenant tells the story of the horrors this young woman endures and what she comes to know about other women in this man's other life.
I read The Quiet Tenant in one day. I will look forward to future books from this author. This one was amazing.

Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I devoured this dark, sinister book.
You will either hate or love this book. It will possibly give you nightmares, I will think about this book long after I write this review.
Love the cover and Multiple POV .
4 stars

I wasn't quite sure how to rate this one...
On one side, it is quite gripping. It kept me wanting to see what happened. On the other side, I was more interested in seeing the end than actually immersing myself in the narrative (don't really read thriller often, perhaps I am just not used to it). The second person narrative by one of the narrators sometimes got into my nerves and annoyed, and I did not care enough by one of the characters so I basically skimmed through her chapters.
The thing is, I am not quite sure I enjoyed reading the book - but it was not due to the writing or anything of such, it was just a bit too heavy for me. I think thriller readers might enjoy this one though, I wanted something different from my usual non-fiction/light romance books but may have been to big of a jump for me.

When Aidan Thomas’s wife passes away, the residents of the small town where he resides are there to support the widower and his teenage daughter, Cecilia. If you ask the townsfolk, Aidan is a very respectable and generous man who is always available to help his neighbors should they need it. Emily, the owner of a local restaurant, is quite taken with the man who regularly sits at her bar. His piercing blue eyes and kind smile had her enthralled from the moment they first met, and she finds herself looking forward to his arrival every week. Emily is very keen on getting to know Aidan and soon finds herself entwined in his and his daughter’s life.
If you asked Rachel, she would tell you that Aidan Thomas is the most despicable and evil man she has ever met. Rachel knows things about Aidan that would shock the town. Aidan Thomas is a serial killer. He has killed eight women and locked up a ninth in his shed, Rachel. Rachel has been Aidan’s captive for years and hasn’t seen daylight or felt the wind on her face for what feels like forever. She only knows the shed, where Aidan brings her meals, a bucket to do her business, and visits late at night to take advantage of her. Rachel is desperate to convince Aidan that he has her in his thrall so that she can make her escape as soon as the opportunity presents itself. Little does she know that opportunity may come sooner rather than later. But has Rachel convinced Aidan that she’s loyal to him?
I’m stunned that this is a debut novel. It was so well written and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The book jumps between multiple points of view, Rachel’s, Emily’s, and Cecilia’s. I really like that we go to see Aidan through each woman’s points of view. It really drew me into the story. It really makes you think twice about trusting your neighbor, the man you sit next to on the bus, the kind patron you serve everyday…You never know what secret a person may be hiding. Reading Emily’s point of view made my skin crawl. She’s so captivated and infatuated with Aidan, I found myself yelling at her to run. I found it insanely creepy how a serial killer can be so charming and have an entire town wrapped around his finger.
This book is a nail-biting thriller that will have you talking about it for a long time after you’ve turned the last page!!
