Overall I really enjoyed this book, I appreciated that the story was told from 3 different perspectives. The book very much reminded me of the case of the 3 girls in Cleveland, OH who were kidnapped and rescued years later. I really enjoyed that the author included Aidan having a daughter and her role in what was going on. Rachel was an incredible protagonist who had great instincts. As I said I really enjoyed the three parallel storylines from the kidnapper, victim and a love interest. Its a great reminder of not really knowing what happens behind closed doors. Thank you to Clemence Michallon, Knopf and Net Galley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

3.5 out of 5 stars for me!
I found the beginning to be a bit confusing. I couldn’t keep track of the characters but around 15% in I got a better grasp of everyone.
After 15%, I began to appreciate the point of views.
That being said, The victims narrating the book was a brilliant, instead of it being narrated by the killer himself.
The story was engaging but the characters weren’t very relatable. Granted it’s a thriller but I like to feel like I have connected somehow to the characters.
Overall I would recommend!

Another book that seemed to have so much potential in the plot but then just...didn't live up to it.
The woman (who starts out in the shed) is held captive by a well respected man around town, Aiden Thomas. Who also happens to be a serial killer with a 13 year old daughter!
If there was an explanation as to why he chose to keep "Rachel" alive out of his other victims, I must have missed it.
But she stays ...and obeys...in unbelievable ways.
Then here is the town bartender Emilie who gets infatuated with Aiden basically stalks him obsessively.
The plot lacked mystery and suspence so I read just to find out what comes of these characters.
Recommend if you're looking for something a bit different, somewhat dark, with some crazy characters, at bit of a slow pace.
Thank you, Netgalley, publisher, and author for the ARC.

If you like psychological thrillers with a slant this is your book. Aidan abducted Rachel five years ago and has kept her prisoner in a shed. He has killed several other women over the years. This story is told mainly through Rachel, Cecilia, who is Aidan's daughter, and Emily, Aidan's love interest and probable next victim. We also get tiny vignettes from the women Aidan murdered. The story really takes off when Aidan must move house and he decides to bring Rachel along. A relationship.grows between Rachel and Cecilia. While Emily draws closer to Aidan's secrets. Excellent plot and place along with lyrical language hit this book out of the park. Thank you Knopf publishing and NetGalley for an ARC of this.

When I logged onto Goodreads this morning I noticed my Currently Reading now sits at over EIGHTY books . . . .

That is SHAMEFUL! I only read one book at a time . . . I just never review them *sad emojis forever*

The Quiet Tenant is a new take on an abduction story. The narrative is told by three women: Rachel, the captive; Cecilia, the daughter; and Emily, the local bartender while they navigate their respective lives with Aidan. The Stars here all come from this being such a fresh approach. Clèmence Michallon’s version of a serial killer story has all of the vibes Emma Donoghue presented in Room. I could not put this down.

I have very mixed feelings on this read, so I will break it down into two sections!

What I loved:
• The author’s writing style. She knows how to write eerie, suspenseful scenes.
• The characters. I was rooting for the women!
• The multiple POV approach. This always hooks me into thrillers.

What I didn’t love:
• The resolution was not surprising at all. There were no twists. Just a steady build to a predictable climax.
• For being about a serial killer with multiple victims, we didn’t really get a “why” or a super interesting in-depth character study of the man.

Overall, I would love to read more from this author! I think this book will be a home run for many readers! It just wasn’t quite the thriller vibe I was hoping for.

THE QUIET TENANT by Clemence Michallon
This is the most intense, complex, captivating, suspenseful, dark psychological thriller that I have stumbled across in a long time. It was impossible to put down until I finished it. I am not going to say much about the plot other than it is a much, much different take on a serial killer and his victims than I have ever read before. I look forward to reading Ms. Michallon's future works, her debut has been extraordinary. This is a definite 5 star read.

This book hooks you from the very beginning. This story is told from 3 different characters, and their viewpoints over time.

It focuses on 4 main characters:
Rachel-- The woman in the shed/the woman in the house
Aidan-- The kidnapper/Dad/Serial Killer/etc.
Cecilia-- Aidan's daughter
Emily-- The local bartender/woman becoming obsessed with Aidan.

I will say that this story is a slow burn for sure, but if you stick with it the ending is worth it.

This book focuses primarily on Rachel. She was kidnapped 5 years ago by Aidan, a friendly family man and pillar of the community. He has a 13-year old daughter and a wife who just died. Because of his wife's passing he has to move. This forces him to move Rachel into the new house with him and Cecelia. Nobody knows or suspects the type of evil he has inside other than the nine women he has kidnapped/killed.

There are many twists in this book, and the story has a lot of suspense. The book also includes chapters from each of the other women he has taken. I enjoyed the viewpoints and how the story unfolded.

I also loved that the author did such an amazing job writing this book in her non-primary language! That was very impressive to me. If you are a fan of true crime/serial killer stories then this is the book for you. I could not put it down.

Aidan Thomas a serial killer and the kidnapper of Rachel, who for the last five years chained into a garden shed. Why wasn’t someone looking for her? Cecilia was Aidan’s daughter and the innocent person in the novel. Aidan’s was a surprisingly affectionate parent to Cecilla
I do not usually read thrillers; however, I enjoyed this novel very much. Perhaps, I should add this genre to my reading list. The author alternated each chapter through the eyes of each character. I liked the author’s unusual formating, It took a few chapters to become familiar with this presentation of each character.
The author’s words were compelling, hence I found it difficult to put the novel down. The story was interesting and I ended up with an internal argument when it was time to finish a chapter and ended up reading several more. The conclusion was well written and did not make the reader wonder whether or not this was the ending.
I appreciate Clemence Michallon, Alfred A. Knopf, and NetGalley the opportunity to read the Advanced Reader Copy of this book and I’ve written an honest review.

AWESOME debut!!! I almost have no words, but here goes....... I could not put this one down except to go to work! This is a serial killer story that doesn't really focus on the serial killing. Aidan is a great husband, father, and much respected man in his small town. His wife has passed away and he is now a single Dad. Poor guy. He is also a serial killer who has killed numerous women and has kept Rachel in his shed for 5 years. His family is forced to move, so he moves Rachel also. Bad idea on his part. The story is told from Rachel's POV and also his daughter Cecelia and Emily. Emily owns a local restaurant and is starting to fall for this "perfect" guy. All of these lives come crashing together in what is one of the best, most thrilling climactic endings that I have read in a long time. I loved reading how this guy manages his double life until he doesn't. I cannot wait to see what this author writes next!

Thank you to #NetGalley, Clemence Michallon and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor for this ARC. All opinions are my own.

I will post to Amazon, Facebook, Instagram and other retail and social media sites upon publication.

Thank you to the publisher & NetGalley for allowing me to read an ARC of The Quiet Tenant.

This is story is told from a few different points of view. It' scary to think you don't always really know the people in your life. I like the style of writing and the chapters were nice and short. The story held my attention, but at times I felt I was just reading to see what was going to happen. I was left with some unanswered questions and wished the ending was tied up a little better. Overall I would say The Quiet Tenant is worth the read.

Clémence Michallon’s debut novel, The Quiet Tenant, tells the story of Aidan Thomas, a seemingly perfect father and husband, who is actually a kidnapper and murderer of eight women. Rachel, one of his victims, has been imprisoned in his shed for five years until Aidan's wife's death forces him to bring her inside his home. Rachel stays alive by analyzing Aidan's psyche and playing the role he has assigned her. The novel is narrated through the perspectives of Rachel, Aidan's daughter Cecilia, and his new love interest, Emily, with occasional glimpses into the final thoughts of Aidan's unnamed victims. Although the use of the second-person narration can be challenging to follow, and the book lacks in-depth insights into Aidan's backstory and motives, Michallon's debut is still a gripping read that's hard to put down. The Quiet Tenant is a heartbreaking story about resilience and survival, recommended for fans of true crime stories, as well as readers who enjoyed works by Gillian Flynn and Jessica Knoll

Everyone thinks Aidan Thomas is a great guy. Quiet, but friendly and charming, and willing to help out if there is a need. There is also the sympathy of losing his wife to cancer, leaving him and his teenage daughter, Cecilia.

The only (living) person who knows the truth is “Rachel”, who has spent five years locked in a shed, enduring the nighttime visits and following the rules in the hope that he will somehow make a mistake. Numerous other victims who did not survive their encounters with Aidan will make their appearances throughout the story.

However, the death of Aidan’s wife will force changes. He and his daughter have to leave their home, which belongs to his in-laws, who have never liked him. The local judge has offered a property he owns in town for rent. This works well for Aidan and his daughter but is not good news for Rachel. Yet, she manages to convince Aidan (whose name she does not yet actually know) to take her with him, pretending that she is renting a room in the new house. She will remain a prisoner, and still be subject to the nightly visits, but she will still be alive. At first, things work out okay -- Cecilia has been given the basic cover story, and Rachel spends her time locked in her room, staying quiet, and have brief interaction with Cecilia during the occasional meal. Cecilia has been instructed not to go into Rachel's room, which is kept locked anyway. However, over time, a friendship of sorts will develop between Rachel and Cecilia. Also, Aidan will become increasingly distracted by his next target, who will push boundaries and cause even more disruption.

A book about a serial killer told from the point of view of his victims and his daughter.

This book was FANTASTIC. Very suspenseful, even difficult to read at times because of the suspense. Even though this book gave me nightmares, I couldn’t stop reading it. The only thing missing for me was Aidan’s motivation. It would have been really interesting to see snippets of his diary at the end or incorporate his POV in some way. Overall such a well written and complex psychological thriller, one of my favorite books so far this year.

Nail biter!

This really kept me wanting to read more and more. A young woman is coming up on her 5th anniversary of being imprisoned, abused and raped that part was not explicit) by a serial killer (again, not gory). When his wife dies, he moves her from a shed on their property to a room in his new rental house. He has a 13 yr old daughter, who the woman comes to care about. Although her escape is possible several times, she is afraid.

The book alternates between her story, both pre- and post-kidnapping and that of several other victims and near-victims.

I am not normally a fan of serial killer books, but this was excellent. I am surprised that the author's native language is not English as it was written as if it was.

Highly recommended.

Although the book felt like a slow burn in how it deep dives into how a particular POV feels (like really deep dives), there were many times I felt the book was unputdownable. Not much in the way of twists, which is alright by me because even though I knew the direction of the story, it felt suspenseful. I would say that the author got a bit wordy in some instances, which pushed me to skim some paragraphs. Also, the ending didn’t seem to resolve some things that were peppered throughout the book.
Overall, I enjoyed the book. It felt like true crime told through a victims POV in real time which was interesting.

Wow! What a ride. I couldn’t put this book down until I got to the end. If this is a debut novel, I can’t wait to see what else this author writes. The man is handsome, helpful and well liked in the community but is also a serial killer. Each chapter is told through the voice of his victims, current and past, his daughter and a woman who is enamored with him and wants to be in his life. He goes to great lengths to hide who he really is. But one of his “victims” knows exactly who he is and vows to expose him and survive his torment.

Thank you NetGalley, the author and publisher for the ARC in exchange for my review.

Clememence Michallon has written a powerful psychologically compelling twisted tale in The Quiet Tenant.
One that will leave me with my head on a swivel from now on when I’m traveling in evening.
One that make me reinforce the warnings to my daughters, about how you can’t trust every man you meet in a bar.
Because you never know if that nice, normal, handsome looking guy; is really a predator, and looking for a woman to keep in his shed as a quiet tenant

*kidnapping
*violence
