I enjoyed the relationship between the main characters in a believable scenario. There was enough intrigue to keep me interested at most times. I think the issue I had overall was the social aspects (concerts, balls, etc.) Seemed drawn out and dull. The only enjoyable part during these moments was the stepdaughter. Overall I did enjoy the journey to get to the truth, but the this wasn't my favorite.
Who doesn't enjoy a good Regency romp? And when it includes a twisting and turning mystery, as well as a sweet love story, who can resist. I suggest you pour yourself a good sized cup of tea and settle in - you may want to devour this in one bite.
I really enjoyed this book, right from the start! The story took place in Bath and moved along at a good pace and had very likeable characters. Although the culprit was soon discovered, it was finding the proof that involved Lydia and John Savage. How they found it was fascinating and I enjoyed how they interacted with each other. I did like the relationship between the two main characters, Anthea and Gideon. They were both subjected to derision from society, albeit for different reasons. Gideon’s daughter, Rachel is quite a character, not the usual debutante. This is the first book I’ve read by this author but I will look for more. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
To be completely honest, I'm kind of stuck at the beginning of Chapter 20 (out of 27) because my brain is a bit livid over a conversation about religion near the end of Chapter 19. I loved the first book in the series and quite enjoyed the second, but I'm going to need some time for my brain to cool down and stop telling my fist to punch Thea in the jugular before I finish this one. It's really too bad because I thought it was well on its way to being even better than the first, but the Kindle I'm reading on is brand new and I would hate to become so irate that I damage it somehow. Three stars, though, for the first 62% ... which could easily have been 5 stars had it not been for flowers and mushrooms.
Unlike any other book I’ve ever read! The beautiful young Anthea Halliwell has been living a lie hovering over her head for several years. Who she thought was her good friend blamed her for stealing a precious necklace. Anthea insists she didn’t steal it, but no one seems to believe her.
Having this over her head, plus her father gambling all his money, Anthea decides to ask a man her father trusts with finances and advances, Gideon Rodrigo. Never did she expect that the handsome Gideon would come up with the most unusual solution to Anthea’s problem, he offered her hand in marriage!
Gah, talk about a knight in shining armor! Gideon holds his own issue of being “less than” because he is a Jew, but he holds his own as a man of honor and financially stable. He’s apparently been in love with Anthea for many years! His teenage daughter sees how he is with Anthea as nothing she ever saw in him with her late mother.
They elope immediately and Gideon asks a couple from Sussex to swing by for a few weeks to help solve the mystery of the elusive necklace that forced Anthea to become a recluse all those years. John and Lydia Savidge come to Bath to assist Gideon in his quest to release Anthea of the rumors. John and Lydia become fast friends with Gideon and Anthea.
It also appears that more is being hidden than just what actually happened to this necklace. Will John and Lydia be able to solve the mystery before it’s too late?
I give this book 5 out of 5 tiaras because it’s a storyline I never saw coming. Here I thought he whispers were only because of Anthea’s necklace stealing rumors when really there was so much more to it!
The description outlines the story well. The two main characters, Anthea and Gideon, by about page 10, have gone from being one person needing help and the other wanting her for years, to a very happily married couple - quick Regency romance then. Gideon brings in John and Lydia Savage to help clear Anthea's name of stealing a valuable necklace 7 years ago, and most of the story relates to their investigations but ably aided by Rachel, Gideon's almost grown-up daughter, and Mrs Lynford, a formidable Society lady. The characters are well-drawn and the atmosphere feels as I imagine Georgian England to have been although Rachel's liveliness seems a little too much at times. Georgina was a suitable "bad gal" and brings jealousy to another dimension. Enjoyable light read and I hadn't realised that it was number 3 in a series - presumably the others are John and Lydia's other investigations, need to go and find them. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy.
Loved it. This book had all the things i love romance, suspense, intrigue, murder and wrongs made right all set at a good pace that kept me intrigued. The characters are each likeable and well defined and it is a little unusual in that it's not the couple themselves who solve the mystery but a couple they hire although they are involved throughout. I have read books by this author before and have always enjoyed them. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The Whispering Tongues, by Beth Andrews, is a book of mystery and who-done-its.
Set up by sheep-in-wolves clothing, Anthea had to suffer in solitude from a riches-to-rag story in shame.
Anthea was accused of stealing her best friend Georgina’s necklace in high society, which was an unspeakable crime for a woman of her stature. She lost her betrothment to Crispin, her true love. Anthea suffered in silence accused of being a petty thief for seven long years. She proclaimed her innocence.
Nevertheless, her father Sir Harry lost his fortune to gaming. He became miserable and hard to get along with Anthea. To make matters worse, when Gideon, A wealthy Jew, came for her hand in marriage, he disowned Anthea.
As a result, Gideon and Anthea eloped. They lived a peaceful life and happy marriage with their daughter Rachel. The only thing Gideon desired was his wife’s name free from being a thief. He called his friends, Lydia and John to investigate the theft of Georgina’s necklace, and clear Anthea’s name forever.
The investigation of John and Lydia regarding the stolen necklace became so dangerous, they took extra precautions.
As time went on, more murders, mysteries, and who-done-its were discovered.
This book is for those who enjoy murder mysteries and suspense.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Absolutely easy to read, fast paced, with a nice and intriguing plot. Loved the characters, the humor, the snarkiness and the wittiness.
Follow the love story of Gideon and Anthea as they try, with the help of their new friends Lydia and John, to clear Anthea’s name and restore her reputation.
Thank you Joffe Books and NetGalley!
The Whispering Tongues by author Beth Andrews is a period novel based sometime in the 1800s. Anthea is accused of theft and becomes a recluse for seven years as a result. Desperate for money, Anthea marries Mr. Gideon Rodrigo and they quickly fall in love. Convinced of Antheas’ innocence, Gideon hires a crime-solving couple to dig deep into the case. While this title is not in my wheelhouse by any means, it was still an ok read. The dialogue is hard to get into, if you’re not used to period novels. I struggled with the writing and style, but finished it. I’m not sure how the title plays into the story, though. Overall I’d give 3.5⭐️ because every author deserves recognition and the book itself is well told, if you’re into period romances/thrillers. This book is not yet available to the public, but will be shortly. #thewhisperingtongues #bethandrews #arc #periodpiece #romantic #mildthrills #netgalley #ebook #kindlereads
The premise and story are interesting enough, however I must confess that I got bored several times whilst reading it, and left it to read other books before coming back to it. The story itself is good, but does feel dragged out, with both dialogue and actions, so that what was written would’ve been better spread out over half the number of chapters so as to hold the readers interest (this coming from someone who enjoys lengthy stories). Also some things seemed to be constantly repeated (how many times was it written that Gideon and Anthea loved each other very much, and everyone else was embarrassed by it). An ok read, but with too little storyline spread over too long a book
The Whispering Tongues is book three in the Sussex Regency Romance series. While this is a series it can be a stand-alone read. I was unaware that this was a series and there was nothing specific that made me think I was missing something while reading it.
The story begins with Anthea Halliwell making a visit to Gideon Rodrigo. Anthea's life has been damaged by lies and rumors from a scandal that happened seven years ago. she has hidden away at home while her father has gambled and drank his life and fortune away leaving Anthea with few options in her opinion. Her once-bright future was cruelly taken from her the moment she was accused of theft.
Anthea asks Gideon for help in obtaining a small milliner's shop, something she can do for herself so she can earn a living. But Gideon has other ideas, instead there is another way he can help her. He offers to marry her and give her a life of ease and luxury. As they discuss it, Anthea realizes that this may be the best option for her so, she accepts his offer. She leaves and tells her father that she is marrying Gideon, but he says he will consider her dead to him if she follows through with this plan. She packs her few meager belongings and returns to Gideon's home explaining what has occurred. They decide to elope with his daughters blessing.
But Gideon has many plans besides marrying Anthea. He hires Mr. Savidge to uncover the truth about what caused Anthea to be accused of theft. Gideon has loved Anthea from the moment he set eyes upon her when completing business with her father. He has kept this to himself thinking he could never be worthy of Anthea. Now that he is going to marry her, he is going to do all he can in his power to undo all the gossip surrounding Anthea and make her happy. But there is more than Gideon and Anthea are aware of, a murderer may hold the key to the truth.
I really liked the story of Gideon and Anthea. Both of them have suffered from gossip, but they have been given an opportunity to undo all the unkindness shown to them. It really was a sweet love story. I will be reading the previous books and hopefully this is not the end of the series.
Interesting historical romance with murder mystery twist.
The marriage of convenience, or more of desperation by both. Anthea has little choices otherwise, and Gideon carries a mark of being a Jew even if he's a gentleman, so in any other circumstances they would not be allowed to be together. To clear his future wife's name Gideon hires Lydia and John to investigate her case and thus murders are discovered.
The story has multiple POVs. I enjoyed the story, it's well written and quite intriguing.
This is my first time to read By Author Beth Andrews. I love this authors writing style. This book was a pleasant surprise. It has it all, romance, suspense, wrongs made right, friendships heartwarming read. The characters are each well defined. Very strongly recommend this book. I was given an advanced reader copy of this book by NetGalley and I am freely leaving my review.
This was very well written, and I enjoyed the journey these two went on. Full of steam, arguing, and love. This wonderful blend of mystery and romance is definitely a must read!.
An enjoyable Regency murder mystery with a bit of romance set in Bath.
I found this story to be engaging and felt invested in the outcome as the entertaining characters solved the seven years old mystery. The feel for the period is well captured as the somewhat more relaxed rules of ladies behavior in Bath compared to London could definitely be seen.
This is the third book in this author's Sussex Regency Romance series but I didn't feel as though I was missing necessary information to enjoy this charming bit of intrigue.
A good book for anyone who enjoys cozy historical mysteries with a touch of clean romance.
I received this ARC from Joffe Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you.
