Such a quirky cookbook idea, I loved it
Thanks so much to NetGalley and the publishers for letting me access this book in exchange for my feedback.
In this book, Linda Ly has compiled over 70 recipes that transport you straight to the iconic lodges, landscapes, and dining rooms of the national parks. From the famous popovers at Acadia to the irresistible Mile-High Blackberry Ice Cream Pie at Shenandoah, these recipes capture the essence of the parks, allowing you to recreate those unforgettable meals right in your own kitchen.
But this book is more than just a collection of recipes. It’s a love letter to the parks themselves, with each recipe telling a story about the park it’s inspired by. You’ll find yourself not only cooking up a storm but also getting lost in the rich history and vibrant culture of these natural treasures.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to review a temporary digital ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.
A Stunning Feast for the Eyes
This book is a stunning feast for the eyes as well as your stomach. Beautiful color illustrations highlight original recipes served at or inspired by our National Parks. This is the perfect gift for anyone who enjoys the outdoors or nature. While most of these recipes were not something I would make on an everyday basis I found them feasible for a special occasion. Still, they're approachable enough for those who would choose to make them on a more regular basis. My thanks to NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
The National Parks Cookbook is the perfect gift for an outdoor enthusiasts. This book has remarkable photography of the National Parks as well as the food associated! These foods are not necessarily feasible for cooking while visiting a park but rather a delightful way to encode a strong sense of place and reminisce on a park once traveled!
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
Take a trip to some of America’s most beautiful National Parks through the amazing photos and tasty recipes contained in this book. The recipes are based on the foods found in the parks, for example: blueberries, blackberries, wild rice, white fish, crab. I am interested in trying out the recipe for Superior Whitefish Tacos or Minnesota Wild Rice Soup. They sound great. There are recipes for drinks and snacks as well as meals.
The book includes some history about the parks and the story of how Fred Harvey brought improved food service to the parks in an effort to promote tourism to the national parks.
The book would make a good coffee table book as well as a great cookbook for anyone looking for some fresh ideas.
This book is perfect for any avid hiker who loves cooking. I will definitely purchase a copy for my mother-in-law!! I love how the recipes use ingredients native to each park and gave a great representation of the culinary eats that are common for the locals. It is a gorgeous book- I even tried on of the recipes and it was delicious!
I love that this cookbook contains recipes from or inspired by some of the most famous US National Parks. The pictures throughout the whole book were so beautiful. I liked how the book was divided up by the regions that the parks are in. Linda Ly did an excellent job on telling stories about each park and how the recipe tied into that park. If you can't get to any of these National parks, Linda takes you there through the recipes.
Thanks to Netgalley for the digital copy to read. I look forward to trying a few of the recipes.
This is a beautiful cook book. The pictures in it are amazing and the recipes are well selected. I haven't tried any recipes yet, but have many on my list for the near future. This is one of those books that I will definitely be purchasing in print to have on my bookshelf!
I received this as free E-ARC from Netgalley and Harvard Common Press.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book.
I loved the plentiful information and fun recipes, but the photography of the parks was wonderful. We enjoy adventuring in The National Parks and our all the state parks.
Feast on the flavors of America’s national parks with more than 70 delicious recipes inspired by their iconic lodges, landscapes, and chefs—including savory dishes, cocktails, and desserts.
I enjoy flipping through cookbooks, and was intrigued to find a cookbook devoted to dishes made at the various US National Parks. Some of these recipes I will never make, but I enjoyed reading them! There are others that I will add to my collection.
I also liked seeing all the beautiful pictures of the National Parks. We have a real treasure in the USA!
Cookbook containing recipes from or inspired by dishes served at some of the most famous US National Parks. I enjoyed reading the introductions to each recipe. The pictures for the recipes and of the parks were gorgeous. I loved the wide variety of recipes and how they were divided up by the region the parks are in. Two things that I would change would be many of the recipes call for ingredients that are unique to the region where the National Park is in. I would like to see possible substitutions for ingredients like boysenberries and birch syrup. Regional sections were dived up by parks. It may have been nice to have them divided by recipe type instead (drinks, mains, side, snacks, etc). It seemed to disrupt the flow when browsing through.
This is a beautiful cookbook organized by national park regions. There are images of almost every recipe, and something for everyone here. I especially like the recipes based on parks in the southwest and west. This book will inspire you to plan a national park road trip, but before you do, you can make some inspired dishes at home! Thanks so much to NetGalley for the ARC!
This has quickly become one of my favorite cookbooks! My family and I have visited several National Parks and it has been so fun to create some of the recipes from places we have visited and also recipes from places we dream to visit!
Our favorite recipe is the Jordan Pond House Popovers from Acadia National Park. This recipe brought back such great memories from our visit to Jordan Pond where the smell of popovers wafts through the air everyday. The recipe took us right back in time to our visit.
The photography in this cookbook is stunning and the recipe selection is top notch! I highly recommend this book for all National Park enthusiasts. It would make a fantastic gift or addition to any cookbook collection.
Anyone who knows cookbook author Linda Ly, knows that she is an expert on outdoor cooking. The National Parks Cookbook: The Best Recipes from (and Inspired by) America’s National Parks is a little different from her other cookbooks, but just as good. The recipes aren’t necessarily cooked outside; rather they use ingredients such as wild game, to make dishes that one would think would be served at restaurants in the national parks. All of the parks are included, and the recipes are mouthwatering. There are dozens of good recipes that almost everyone will find very appealing.
The recipes are written in the traditional manner with a list of ingredients followed by succinct instructions that are easy-to-follow and can be prepared by both beginning and advanced cooks. Many of the recipes will appeal to children and families, and even kids will love perusing the recipes because there are some beautiful photographs of the national parks, as well as most of the dishes. The recipes include side dishes, soups, snacks, main dishes, and desserts, and are organized according to the national park they represent. Each recipe includes notes preceding the recipes with interesting vignettes, information on the national park, and hints to make the recipe easier to prepare.
All told, this is another Linda Ly cookbook that is well-written and presents great recipes. Anyone who loves good food, especially good food that they are introduced to in a national park, will want to pick up this excellent cookbook.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Really cool idea for a cookbook, and many of the recipes seemed interesting (especially the ones that are/were actually made at the historic park lodges).
I was seriously impressed by this cookbook. As someone who loves to bake and cook, and also loves to hike and travel to national parks, I was very excited to receive a copy of this book to review. I think the author absolutely nailed it with the execution of this book's concept. You learn so much about the history of each park, and the recipes are inspired by local ingredients from each park's region. The recipes themselves also look delicious. I am particularly excited about the popover recipe!
Not only did this cookbook make me want to cook new dishes, they also made me want to pack my backpack and hop on a plane immediately to go to a park. Even though I received a free digital copy, I was only able to access it via the Netgalley app and the license expired so I can no longer view it through the app. I loved this one enough to immediately buy a physical copy for myself when the license expired!
This would make an excellent gift for anyone who loves our nation's parks. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my complimentary copy! This is one I will be recommending a lot.
I really enjoyed this book, and some of the Recipes were looking
good as well.
I have picked out a couple of them to make! I don't cook all that much
anymore but they really looked appealing to me.
Thank you so much for giving me the chance to read and review this
wonderful book!
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This was an interesting cookbook with a variety of recipes and cocktails from and inspired by a variety of national parks. The recipes are simple and easy to follow. They have a variety of regional dishes. There are many tips about cooking and alternatives throughout the book. There is also a lot of information about the national parks and places before each of the recipes. There are also a few different separate pieces about the parks.
I thought that this was an interesting cookbook. It feels like an easy way to travel through the parks without having to leave home. The majority of the ingredients are accessible, with things like canned goods.
Some of my favorite family vacations have been spent in national parks. The National Parks cookbook is filled with beautiful photography, stories, history, and of course recipes from a variety of parks. I came for the popover recipe, but left with memories and inspiration for future travels. Would be a great gift for your travel buddy or foodie friend!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press and NetGalley for this ARC.
This one really surprised me. The pictures are stunning. Even if you didn’t use a single recipe you would enjoy this book. But the recipes are outstanding! Not what I was expecting at all.
