Mia is used to living the invisible life, until she receives any anonymous note, "you look beautiful today" The stranger, Adam, continues to send Mia notes and suggestions, including ideas for her wardrobe and hair. However, as time goes on, she finds out that Adam will stop at nothing for her. Including killing. .
The first at least 60% of this is a solid 2. Boring, way too many unnecessary details, etc. I'd say the last quarter of the book changed my rating from a 2 to 3 and served as redemption for the very poor and boring majority of the book. I quite enjoyed the last quarter of the book, but I think probably because the first 3/4 was so boring. The last quarter wasn't anything shocking and was slightly predictable, making it seem better than it was due to the not so great first 3/4. Even with the more enjoyable last quarter, I still give this book a 2 as the majority of it was pretty bad.
Some other negatives - the dialogue was super cringy, the main character was dumb, and it just dragged on FOREVER. You could literally skip multiple chapters and not miss anything.
I would not bother reading this one at all.
Thank you Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the copy in exchange for an honest review.
I dont have very high expectations when it comes to thrillers, but I think this one is on my least favorites list. It had too much unnecessary and irrelevant drama, the dialogue got too long at parts and the plot felt flat for the length of the book.
Pretty enjoyable as far as keeping the suspense going, but I truly found the main character annoying. She made me want to put this down more than one should for a main character. I didn't see the twist coming until I was right in it, but I still think it caused some parts of the ending to feel very abrupt. Not sure all the emotional resolution actually worked itself out fully. Generally an easy, self-propelling read though.
This book was ok, it is a dark thriller my only complaint is that it drug on in places but yet kept you interested enough to want to know more about what is going on and the characters. There are some twists and turns throughout the story that are unexpected. I usually really like L.R. Jones books, but this one just didn't do it for me.
Mia is a librarian residing in Nashville. Accustomed to fading unnoticed into the background, her unassuming existence takes a sharp turn when a seemingly innocuous venture into online dating catapults her into a whirlwind of perilous and unexpected circumstances. Although this is not a pulse-pounding thriller, the story maintains steady momentum thanks to its crisp, succinct prose and brisk pacing facilitated by concise chapters. L.R. Jones skillfully employs red herrings to keep readers engaged in a captivating guessing game, despite eventually forming suspicions about the eventual outcome.
Mia emerges as a deeply authentic protagonist, flawed and relatable, her questionable choices serving as a testament to the richness of her characterization and narrative arc. Similarly, Mia's circle of friends is convincingly portrayed, each fulfilling a vital role in the unfolding drama, albeit occasionally veering towards one-dimensionality.
While initially unsure of the direction the narrative would take, the story unfolds gradually, culminating in a satisfying resolution. For enthusiasts of psychological thrillers similar to Caroline Kepnes's "You" or narratives exploring the sinister intricacies of obsession, "You Look Beautiful Tonight" promises an enthralling journey that entertains and keeps readers guessing with its tantalizing twists and turns.

A great thriller - I would recommend it!
Thank you Netgalley & Thomas & Mercer for an eARC of You Look Beautiful Tonight. This review is long overdue - Pregnancy really got to me, LOL. That being said, I enjoyed this book and found it to be unique. I love the obsession trope in a suspenseful novel.
Mia, librarian (Jealous, me, no. Uh, yes), leads an unremarkable life until one day receiving an anonymous note from a stranger that she looks beautiful. It doesn't stop with the note, though. He's got plans for her.
This book was twisty and you don't know who (or what) to trust. It does require you to suspend belief a bit, so if you are OK with that and want a little stalkerish-suspense in your life, this is a great pick.
I honestly didn't know what to expect with this book at first. I started reading it, and at first, it totally had a romance-type vibe going on...oh...but this book is so much more than that! I actually found myself double checking the description to make sure I was reading the same book! But this book is an expertly woven roller-coaster of a book that will have you not wanting to put it down with a surprise ending that I doubt you'll see coming!
I loved absolutely everything about this book, from the characters, to the setting, to the story! What character could be better than an invisible librarian from Tennessee?
I believe this was my first book by L.R. Jones, which is a pseudonym for Lisa Renee Jones and I could have not been more thrilled with the outcome! It actually makes me want to run out and buy all domestic thriller books by her! This girl has got what it takes to write an awesome domestic thriller/psychological thriller!
Overall, I am super excited to have found another AMAZING author in L.R. Jones and I can't wait to read as much as I possibly can by her.
I would like to take a minute to thank L.R. Jones, Thomas & Mercer, and Netgalley for providing me with a copy of You Look Beautiful Tonight, which allowed me to provide this honest and unbiased review.
This was an interesting and exciting read that had me hooked. I needed to know what was going down and read it so quickly!
While i enjoyed the overall premise of this book and the writing was good, I found that it dragged and I kept putting the book down and picking it back up. For me at times there was so much going on with so many different people it was hard to keep it all straight. I personally would have enjoyed if some of the middle parts had been cut and there was a bit more at the end. I was shocked and then felt like the story ended.
Mia Anderson is a quiet, reserved librarian in Nashville who is used to being “invisible”, as she puts it. Her best friend Jess seems to be her opposite in nearly every way. And her work bestie, Jack, is more similar to her, so she gets the best of both worlds in terms of friendship and support. But when it comes to her dating life, she’s not concerned about the lack of prospects. When Jess voluntells her to start online dating to help her with her next article for her job, Mia is not interested in stepping out of her comfort zone. She doesn’t see the point in trying to change her persona and how people see her. But then one day at a coffee shop, she receives a note that says, “You Look Beautiful Today.” Having no idea who delivered the note, she is left confused and alarmed, and suddenly much less invisible. You Look Beautiful Tonight by L. R. Jones is a contemporary thriller in which Mia must figure out the reason for the unexpected attention while on a path of self-discovery to choose which version of herself she wants to be.
You Look Beautiful Tonight will entertain readers who enjoy a mystery/thriller novel with a dash of the Netflix series You. However, they will have to be patient and get through the first half of the story before anything really happens. The pacing is slow and the characters are underwhelming. As Mia gets the unexpected spike in attention, she keeps going back and forth wondering if she prefers to be invisible or not. It became quite redundant, especially with her best friends constantly being equally repetitive in their responses to each new note or message. I will give credit to L. R. Jones for keeping readers guessing throughout the story and creating a twist that I really didn’t see coming. Even so, I wasn’t blown away by the lead up and reveal. Of course, readers are welcome to pick up the book and decide for themselves.
This was a great book. I loved every paragraph, every sentence and every word of this masterpiece! I read it in 12 hours, which is a lot for me to do! It had everything and more laid out in the novel! I sure hope There is more to come from this author! I am totally hooked!
You Look Beautiful Tonight had such potential but just failed to deliver.
Upon reading the synopsis of the book, I expected a more fast paced thriller-leaning story. Instead I feel what I received was a suspense book with too many story arcs of little relevancy and too many minor characters to keep track of throughout the book that did little for advancing the plot.
The book felt too long to me. There was quite a bit of lengthy description of the mundane that seemed to serve no purpose other than to increase the word count of the book. A large suspension of belief is necessary for what I found to be an implausible, nonsensical twist. There were several unfinished subplots as the book came to a close, making the ending feel rushed.
For these reasons I could not rate this book higher than 3 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and to the publisher for the opportunity to read You Look Beautiful Tonight.
You Look Beautiful Tonight has lots of mystery, suspense, and twists and turns. Mia feels invisible and I have to admit she got on my nerves at times, but I enjoyed the story. Big twist at the end.
I unfortunately found this too slow for my liking, and could not get through it. Regardless, thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book.
It was a little slow in the beginning but it did pick up after the 20% mark. Wasn't a big fan of the main character either which didn't help. The storyline was there but it lacked execution.
I felt like this book had too many filler chapters. The twists were not interesting to me, and I did not care about all of the drama with the main character's job and her family. The dialogue felt forced. This book took me a while to get through, and I just found that it was not exciting. I almost DNF'd this one.
Thank you to the publishing company and that galley for ARC for my honest opinion.
Engaging and entertaining. A recommended purchase for collections where crime and thrillers are popular.
Wow! This book was great. Started a little slow but picked up quick. This book kept you guessing until the end. Several twists, but the one towards the end left me surprised. Really good read.
You Look Beautiful Tonight- I give it a 3.25. What I liked about the book; Some of the Pop culture references. It gave it a relatable vibe. I wasn't expecting the ending. Would I change anything? Yes, I couldn't get into it as much because I thought it was going to be more of a stalkerish thriller. I don't think I would reread it again though.
