mechanisms and providing laugh-out-loud moments.
This wasn’t a place to meet someone. Not for a hook-up or anything more consequential. We were in anger management sessions for God’s sake. I need to get a grip, not get laid.
Frankie’s obsession and attempted application of all she feels she’s learned from them hit me at my core. And truthfully, it is a country-wide phenomenon right now (whether true crime tv/podcasts or thriller books). How many of us have been guilty of saying… well in SVU or… when I announced that I learned you could kill someone with eye drops from a book I’d just read. This got me some stares and thoughts that maybe I needed a break from this particular genre.
Characters
Last but not least, the audiobook is narrated fantastically by Lauren Ezzo, who is new to me. I will look out for her in the future. She does a fantastic job handling the emotional roller coasters, as well as the drops of the rollercoaster that leave your stomach in your throat.
Pull up your beach chair, or just curl up on the couch. Hannah Mary McKinnon’s The Revenge List is going to leave you breathless.
I can always count on Hannah Mary McKinnon to deliver a thriller that will have me flipping through the pages quickly to find out what is going to happen next. Her books are entertaining and fast-paced. The basic premise of this story is that the main character, has decided to go to anger management sessions. During her first session, the moderator of the group challenges the members to write a forgiveness list of people that have hurt them throughout their life that they feel they need to forgive. After the session, Frankie's list goes missing and pretty soon, the people on her list start getting hurt/dying. Coincidence or not? It seems like the forgiveness list is really a revenge list. As Frankie tries to figure out what is happening to those on the list, dark secrets from her past start to resurface, and they just may be the key to figuring out what happened to the list and the people on it. She is worried about going to the cops, because the forgiveness/revenge list provides plenty of motive that make her look like the number one suspect. While I enjoyed the story overall, one thing that kind of drove me crazy throughout the book was the way situations involving Frankie escalated and the gaslighting she experienced as McKinnon attempts to tackle the "angry woman" stereotype. Most of the men she has encountered throughout her life, including her father, past partners, new potential love interests, etc. have reinforced those stereotypes. Other than that, I liked the book. It was mostly unbelievable, but I guess that's the point of fiction! Thank you to the publisher for giving me the chance to read an early copy of this book!
“Truth is, we all carry some degree of anger inside, every single one of us.”
This is a propulsive and sinister thriller about how a forgiveness list turns into a revenge list!
Frankie Morgan’s anger management class was asked to write a list of people she wants to forgive. After completing her group therapy exercise, Frankie closes her notebook and thinks nothing more about the task….until she loses that notebook in an Uber. Within days, it’s freakishly coincidental that one by one the people on her list become victims of accidents. You’ll have to read to find out if it’s coincidence or murder.
Worthy of ALL THE STARS!!! Hannah Mary McKinnon is a Canadian author and for the life of me, I can’t figure out why I’ve never read one of her books before. I’ll be gobbling up her backlist now.
For me, The Revenge List was as much a character study of Frankie as an out-and-out thriller. I can’t stop thinking about Frankie; her character was so well written, seizing my attention and compelling me to engage with the story. I’ve been mulling over her relationships and trying to find out what fuelled her anger. On the one hand, she was so damaged and on the other, she was so vulnerable. She’s so different from the people with whom I choose to surround myself, yet I was so emotionally engaged. Frankie’s voice was also consistent throughout, something that I appreciate with fantastic characterization.
If you like a more psychoanalytic approach to character development, I urge you to check out this book! Everything that readers of this genre look for is here and it’s done extremely well. As you turn the last page, you’ll agree that forgiveness is indeed a process!
I was gifted this copy by Harlequin Trade Publishing, MIRA and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Frankie Morgan has anger issues. She is highly advised by her father, who is also her employer, to sign up for an anger management course which she does. In the first class, they are asked to draw up a forgiveness list, people who have wronged them and should be forgiven. Frankie manages to misplace the list (or someone took it) and it becomes a revenge list after freak accidents start haunting the people on that list. The book was good, but slow paced. It started out fast, then slowed to a trickle, then sped up, then slowed down. I had issues with the pacing. I also found Frankie to be a very unlikable character, although she was a strong, smart woman. I figured out who the culprit was at about the 60 percent mark so the mystery angle sort of died for me. All in all, it is a good book and I do recommend it. This is the sort of book that some will love and other won't. I thought it was OK. Thank you very much to Harlequin Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC of this book. I greatly appreciate it.
I would give this book a solid 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4. This thriller is the true definition of a slow burn. I understand that there needed to be things that happened to set up the scene, but it really felt like it took a long time to get to “the good stuff.” It got to the point quickly, but the more interesting occurrences happened towards the end. There was a lot of telling within the novel, a lot of description and inner monologue. And for those that have seen my reviews, they know that I much prefer dialogue so I can feel like the character. I will say that I didn’t see the whodunit and I didn’t see the second twist that came in after figuring out the whodunit. So, it really was a mystery to me the entire time. That part I really enjoyed. Also, the author set this up so that there could be a sequel, and I really would like to read that! Hopefully that one would have a tad bit more excitement throughout and not just at the end. Overall, I would recommend this book.
Wow. This book was a wild ride from start to finish.
Frankie Morgan knows she has anger issues. She enrolls herself into anger management classes where she’s asked to make a forgiveness list. The list contains the people she believes have wronged her, including herself. She writes all of names down in her sunflower notebook which suddenly disappears and the people who’s on the list start to have freak accidents.
I really enjoyed this book. It was thrilling and had some good twists and turns that I wasn’t expecting. Sadly, I figured out who the culprit was halfway through but I loved how it played out in the end. Frankie got on my nerves some of the time but I enjoyed her character nonetheless. She was a strong women and very determined.
If you’re looking for a fast paced thriller that’ll keep you guessing until the last page then I highly recommend picking this one up on May 23rd!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Mira for the e-arc!
THE REVENGE LIST is the latest dark and twisty suspense novel from Hannah Mary McKinnon. I’ve enjoyed every one of this author’s books and this one was no exception. Frankie Morgan has anger issues. Just ask anyone who knows her, including her family, friends and associates. After an altercation at work, her boss, who just happens to be her father, orders Frankie to take anger management classes if she wants to remain working for him. One of the exercises in the group is to create a “forgiveness list” of people who have wronged her and of course, there are plenty of names on that list, including her own. When her notebook containing the list goes missing, Frankie is shocked to discover that, one by one, the people named on her list are meeting with unexplained accidents. Even after her list is recovered, the accidents continue. Is someone hunting down the people on her list and hurting them or is it coincidence? Could Frankie herself end up being the next victim? Filled with suspense and dark humor, Frankie’s journey was intriguing and entertaining. The unexpected twists along the way and the shocking ending are hallmarks of Hannah Mary McKinnon’s writing style. I enjoyed this edgy and fun book and highly recommend it. Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read and review an advance copy.
Review: Sadly, I was annoyed by the main character once I got to chapter 2. The anger management aspect was a refreshing storyline, but the rest of this was a bust for me.
Recommended For: Those who want something different and not a classical thriller/mystery book.
The premise of this book was interesting. I definitely did not see it ending the way it did. So many twists and turns. Difficult to read at points but halfway through I just had to keep reading to finish
The premise of this is interesting, and the blurb really caught my attention. Sadly, it fell flat in the execution. I kept reading in hopes that things would improve, but they didn't. I had a hard time connecting with and caring about the characters. In fact, I found found Frankie really annoying. She really had no redeeming qualities, and it made me uninterested in the outcome.
YES! Yes, yes! It's been a while that a book kept me almost captive. I really, really had to know what was going on, because I was starting to think we were all going crazy. And maybe I did go crazy.
When Frankie's father tells her to attend anger management therapy, she didn't know one of the silly exercises given to her group would be capable of turning her life upside down to any point, much less that her forgiveness list would become some sort of hit list. And among the persons she can't forgive listed there, she might be the next target. With no one she can count on, she needs to go after each of the names and gather the clues to understand why the people she's angry about the most have been in accidents soon after she listed them.
Of course, we have plot twists. But I don't think that was what kept me going. I didn't need them, actually. The whole thing was such an enigma, Frankie's life just suddenly became such a mess, it was hard not to want to help her by understanding how all that was happening. Not that I could whisper it to her, but the feeling was huge that someone—even if it was me—had to relieve some of her burden. I don't even know how I could connect so much with someone so angry and out of control, but I did. Even as I begged her to calm down, I was feeling with her the anxiety of each turn she took.
Surely, this isn't a perfect read. It did give me feelings, it glued me to its pages, and it was fast-paced, easy to read and follow, thanks to how organized Hannah Mary McKinnon is with all her plots. But in the end, the content isn't so new. It's just very well executed. There are touches here and there that could have been the seed to a masterpiece, but it would probably require so much tinkering, it's not worth the time it would waste with the potential of all that effort going wrong. So I understand why choose it to be not so unique. There's always the next book, anyway. But wow, this one is probably my favorite by this author since The Neighbors, but it's hard to choose.
Recommended to any reader of thriller, you've got action, you've got mysteries to unravel, you've twists, and well-dosed family drama (I almost cried with this one).
Honest review based on an ARC provided by Netgalley. Many thanks to the publisher for this opportunity.
I enjoyed this book but oh my God Frankie got on my nerves! (Which was the point, I know) She is so stubborn. But she is also strong. Well-written and very clever. Another great read from Hannah Mary McKinnon.
Okay I think I finally need to concede that Hannah Mary McKinnon and I are just not a good fit. This is the third book of hers that I've tried. I am always drawn in by the concepts, and yet somehow every single time I struggle to connect with the characters and the story and force myself to muddle through because everyone else likes her so much - but this time I'm going to call it. I just don't connect to her writing style. There is nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't resonate with me.
It doesn't help that her characters are often unlikable and often very strong personalities designed to generate a very strong response. I found Frankie irritating from the first pages. That is the point. And the writing is done well enough that I had an absolutely visceral reaction to the character - which is definitely a sign that the author knows what she's doing and then some. Unfortunately, my strong dislike for the main character didn't help my overall lack of connection to the story.
I wasn't enjoying reading it. And since I read books like this for entertainment, that meant the experience wasn't positive one. As this is the third time this has happened with one of her novels, I think I just need to accept that her stories and my reading tastes simply don't mesh. I'm giving her three stars because she's clearly a talented author, just not an author for me.
Frankie Morgan is angry. Mostly at her father, currently, who basically forced her into an anger management class. When the facilitator starts the session having each participant write a list of names of the people they are angry at( The Revenge List), Frankie is more than happy to write down every name of the people who have pushed her past the point of no return.
When she seems to have lost that list and the people on it start suffering from accidents, she cannot believe that her list could possibly be responsible. Could it just be coincidental or is someone out to frame her, or maybe Frankie has a vengeful angel watching over her. Whoever it is, Frankie must get to the bottom of it before more people are hurt.
Holy Frankie needs more than an anger management class, she needs tranquilizers! I could not believe how long she could hold a grudge(even when she did have a good reason to be angry). She is being torn apart from the inside out, and I really doubted if she could control her rage long enough to figure out what the heck was going on.
Did I guess who was guilty? Yes. However, I did not see the ending coming. When Frankie figured out the who and the why,I wasn’t at all sure what she would do. Not a spoiler but she surprised me.
I read the entire book on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and since this publishes at the end of May, I could see it being a great beach read.
This book follows Frankie as she joins an anger management group to learn to deal with her past trauma.
As the story unfolds, there are many twists and turns and the reader is drawn in and can't wait to see what happens, next. The family relationships and intertwined characters, made this so much more than just a thriller! I really enjoyed this and can't wait to read more by this author!
Thank you to Netgalley and Harlequin trade publishing and the author for allowing me to read an arc of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
First, I want to thank Hannah Mary McKinnon, Mira, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review!
OH SNAP!! Remind me never to get on Hannah Mary Mckinnon’s bad side. I wouldn't want to end up on her version of The Revenge List!! This is one her most creative and brilliantly written storylines outside of the box! If you like major family drama, suspense, heartache, tragedy, wicked twists, then this is a must read for you!
OMG!!! Hannah Mary McKinnon’s detailed intense opening scenes were so vivid that I felt like I was right there with the character! I was literally at the edge of my comfy chair nibbling on my nails as I felt all the feels that she was! Can you say major anxiety too?! It was this opening chapter that I knew Hannah Mary was going to have a best seller on her hands!
I had to lol when Frankie mentioned shoving coffee stirrers into her eyeballs. As a chronic migrainer I am all too familiar with what that pain feels like-and it is not fun! I wouldn’t suggest it to anyone!
The Revenge List intrigued me and fascinated me to no end. I loved the idea of the forgiveness list and learning the backstory of why each person made the list.
Oh the family drama in The Revenge List was totally crazy!! My heart ached for all that Frankie had to endure!
The Revenge List is one book that you will want to add to your growing TBR list! It is definitely a 5 star must read!
I liked the conceit about this murder mystery novel: The central character attends an anger-management support group and makes a list of people who have wronged her in the past and to whom she should forgive. Trouble is, the list falls into the wrong hands and people start having grave accidents. The mystery is who is doing these dastardly deeds, and what does this have to do with the character's flaws, which are many. The action takes place in and around Portland Maine and the supporting cast is engaging and just quirky enough to sustain the plot points. It makes you question your own attitude towards forgiveness and how we resolve issues with our past connections. The family dynamics are also very true-to-life, which adds to the novel's credibility and complexity. Highly recommended.

I really enjoyed this book and the ending was very unexpected.
📚The Revenge List - Hannah Mary McKinnon📚

Rating 3.75/5
Thank you to Harlequin Trade Publishing and Netgalley for the advance copy EBook.
The revenge list was definitely more of a suspenseful slow burn rather than a thriller. Through the book we follow Frankie Morgan our unhinged protagonist with crazy anger issues.
What is written as a “forgiveness list” seems to quickly turn into a revenge list as everyone on it starts having “accidents”
I think the characters were well written and I liked the mix of family drama throughout the story. The plot/ idea was super creative and different than other thrillers I’ve read.
I had this one kind of figured out pretty early on (or as early as possible) but I still loved it!
This one comes out May 23 2023, keep an eye out and add it to your TBR
Frankie Morgan is a woman in her 30’s with anger management issues. She attends an anger management class at the request of her father, who is also her boss, to deal with her issues since they are affecting his business. At the first class, she is told to make a forgiveness list of people that have hurt her. Somehow, the list goes missing and then people on the list start experiencing accidents, etc. At first, the character of Frankie is hard to like, shes’s quick to lash out, impulsive, and seems to be spiraling out of control. As the story progresses, and we learn more of her past, Frankie becomes more likable, we start to understand where her anger stems from. Will she be able to get it under control before her life implodes is another question! This was a face paced read and it really hooks you in to see what will happen. I recommend this book and would give it 4 stars out of 5.
