I am not a gardener so most of that flew right over me...however the information on the herbs and their uses was wonderful. Nicely informative without inundating me with information. Would be a great book to have in print for reference.
This is a great resource on herbs. Part one was very informational. I loved Part Two. Loads of information
It's a good book to have on your shelf.
I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it very informative and fun. Some of the recipes I was a bit iffy on, but the general knowledge I found really useful. This is the perfect book for beginners.
I love how this book covers topics like companion planting and rituals for use in the garden. It’s what sets this book apart from other books on gardening for the Green Witch. While the book is focused on the Hearth Witch’s garden, it’s a great book for non witches too.
The content is broken out into several sections and is well researched and shares many references for additional knowledge. This one will be staying on the shelf next to my desk for a long time to come!
Lovely and informative book for the beginner and seasoned witch alike. Loved the information added for each plant and it’s uses. An excellent reference guide. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley and Llewellyn Publications for the ARC!
The Hearth Witch's Garden Herbal is the perfect companion book for every gardener and green witch, with over 200 herbal recipes and a comprehensive profile for nearly 30 different plants. This book is a practical how-to guide that offers the reader deeper insight into the importance of gardening from both an environmental and a spiritual perspective.
This book is broken up into two parts. The first part covers a witch's garden basics, such as how to care for your environment, create your magical workshop, and harvest and store from your garden. The second part of the book is the A-Z Herbal guide, covering different popular plants and sharing each plant's history and magical properties.
One aspect I appreciated within the book was how well-researched the information in the first section of the book was. Most pages had good sources cited at the bottom; for example, multiple links to resources backed up the claim that chemicals aren't always the best for gardens and how to protect your plants naturally.
I appreciated that the author pointed out the importance of an issue and followed it up with other solutions and ways to achieve a similar result so the reader has actionable items. And the best part is that most recipes can be created with things you will likely already have around your home.
My favorite topics covered in the book were companion planting, working with the spirits in your garden, garden familiars, and season garden rituals.
Overall, regardless of your personal beliefs, this book presents solid arguments and is filled with excellent information that every gardener and witch would love to have on their shelf.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed reading this book. Part 1 was really informative and I loved how information was presented and the different recommendations for types of gardens and companion plants especially. Part 2 is more of a reference of different herbs that you can have in the garden which includes a history of the plant, its uses from a magical, culinary, and cosmetic standpoint, and some recipes that incorporate the plant. I loved this section almost as much as the first part simply because it was so comprehensive and it wasn't just a single recipe or a short discussion on the plant. Highly enjoyable read that was incredibly informative and useful for anyone looking to know the best way to either use what they have in their garden, or who was maybe looking for some plants to add and include in their own gardens and the layout of this book lends it to be skimmable if you are looking for a particular plant topic or recipe as you go.
I really enjoyed this. I liked the tone and feel of it. Nicely organized. Some nice tips for gardening and what not.
I really wanted to like this book and there are parts that I really did love, but I can't ultimately recommend it very highly.
If you want the spiritual, Wiccan elements of this book, it will be great. Want to know how to get fairies to visit your garden or what spell to say? This is your guide. Want to really know about herbs and the best ways to use them? Please look elsewhere. The author is most definitely an expert on witchcraft. She's written something like 28 books on the matter. She is not, however, an herbalist and it shows.
Please research all the plants and recipes here before making them yourself. The recipe for face cream that includes 20 drops of essential oil is likely to cause all kinds of skin reactions, for instance. No essential oil is even recommended, and some are most definitely not good for your face. The advice about hawthorns is fun folklore (never bring them in the house because of some sort of retribution from magical creatures) but hawthorns are actually incredibly beneficial for the heart. I take a homemade hawthorn tincture twice daily for heart health myself because of heart problems I developed after a long illness in 2020.
There are no photos or illustrations of any of the plants listed, and sometimes confusing names are used for them that could lead to using the wrong plants for recipes.
Recommended for the magickal aspect of it and the nice layout, but not for the herbal portion.
I read a digital ARC of this book for review.
This title really, really appealed and after I read the synopsis I knew I wanted to read this. And I’m so thankful to the publisher for a review copy, as once I received this, I tucked right in, and was so impressed by the content within.
In the beginning, this soberly addresses the damage done to, and the needs of our earth, it dives deep into plants and their companion plantings, and there are some truly lovely traditions here to embrace as well. I loved this book and learned so much ❤️
There is soooo much information in this volume. It’s an excellent, and extremely comprehensive resource to keep on your shelf. I'm going to be picking up a physical copy of this and this one is a definite recommendation.
This is a great resource on herbs. The author goes into great detail and gives lots of great tips. This would be a great book for both the beginner and the advanced herbalist.
This is such a comprehensive book. I think this may be my biggest go-to for information on my garden and food. There are some beautiful prayers/spells for honoring the spirit of your garden as well as others throughout this book and truly, they’re such beautiful prayers.
You learn what plants can be paired with what, natural deterrents for pests and more. Truly an all encompassing kind of book.
