This book was just okay. It was nothing special. The best part of it was the artwork. I liked that it was a diverse book with diverse main characters, but there was nothing special about them. None of them stood out to me. They just mashed together. I wouldn't be able to tell them apart if I were to talk about each character.
Elliot Green is embarking on a challenging journey to a new school after the tragic passing of his father. Navigating life as a new student in an unfamiliar town is a daunting experience, and this year is set to be particularly tumultuous. The illustrations beautifully capture the depth of the story and the characters' emotions, providing a stunning backdrop. However, the dialogue often feels artificial, more reminiscent of adult conversations than the authentic voices of teens. The plot, while intriguing, doesn't reach its full potential, and the character development feels a bit disjointed for the first issue.
Engaging story with beautiful queer representation. A perfectly spooky read. I love that it didn't take itself too seriously but still managed to build tension.
New kid at school Elliot ends up befriending a group of kids who have formed a coven. But it isn’t just a game each member has real magic they are uncovering together and so does Elliot. Elliot is starting to see terrible attacks in his dreams and is worried that he won’t be able to retain his new friendships if everyone finds out. The group feels more found family then just friends and the author and illustrated includes lots of great diverse representation. Unfortunately I sometimes felt like the story skipped around a bit too much and parts were missing.
Nicely illustrated. An interesting story, not overly original though. You could pick out the authors influences, but I didn't hate it and I think it will do well and appeal to a lot of people . The cover is appealing, so it the title. Overall it's a fun, easy read, and great for people who are in to graphics novels and witchcraft.
I loved the art style, and I appreciated that it has a majority queer central cast.
However, the pacing felt rushed and abrupt, the dialogue did not feel like it followed a natural flow, and the descriptions in the back of the volume that I assume were the initial character bios both spoiled many aspects of the future story and left a very bad taste.
I specifically have concerns about fatphobia and biphobia. While I'm going to give the storyline more of a chance in future volumes, the initial character bios mixed with how the characters are being portrayed in the text left me frustrated and disillusioned.
I do like that it very much reminds me of The Coven. I enjoy friendship focused stories and this definitely is revolving around their coven and interpersonal relationships. It's definitely gory and not afraid to go dark, which might not be for everyone, but I think works well so far.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy.
A good book for queer representation. Definitely has a Mean Girls meets The Craft vibe to it.
Has at least 1 "F" bomb.
3.75/4 - very close to a 4/5. I loved the artwork in this one. The beginning reminded me heavily of The Craft; I wouldn't be surprised at all if the other was inspired by that movie. I would have liked more character development. It would have made me care a bit more about what each character wanted to change about themselves as they came into power - again this reminded me heavily of The Craft. With that said, I would read another volume of this.
The premise for this was really intriguing: queer teen witches in a high school coven that’s a bit more than they bargained for; but the execution fell a bit flat. The storyline was oddly paced, and felt like it needed more development. I didn’t get a true sense of what was happening in the story. That being said, I loved the representation, the art style, and the cliff hanger. While it may not have a fit in our library, it is definitely something I would continue to read on my own time when more volumes come out.
I had high hopes for this one. There was just something lacking within the story, and at times I had a hard time following it. I think there is potential for future volumes though!
I wanted to like this so much more than I did. The artwork is great and I loved the idea and the author's note at the start. I think the problem was I was expecting something a little different, so this didn't work for me.
A great series opening, I liked the characters right away and can't wait to get to know them more. It fits in perfectly beside the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Sweeney Boo's Over My Dead Body as an edgy teen drama with witchy aspects. Also a fun nod towards the movie The Craft.
As a teacher, I feel like many of my students would love this book. I am aware that I am not the demographic so my review is going to be focused on my students. I believe they would adore this book because those who love reading are going to really enjoy the plot, those who are not into reading can easily get through the book and the illustrations are STUNNING. Those students that are more art inclined are going to be making their own version of the characters for sure!
Beautiful art with a great plot. Loved the magic in this one and the characters were all fun and despite having several that we follow each one stood out. Really loved the art for this graphic novel as well, the style and coloring is very beautiful and nice.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for sending me a copy in exchange for a review.
The illustrations and the plot were really good, but the characters were just carbon copies of stereotypes which I found a little boring.
I did find it a little hard to red on my tablet as the panels were cut in half at times.
Very cool story which is perfectly complemented by the illustrations.
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for providing me with an arc for an honest review.
I've been dying for something new from Simon Curtis since I read Boy Robot years ago. (Still waiting on that sequel too Simon 👀). I was so excited to request The Witches of Silverlake. Unfortunately, I couldn't get into it. I would constantly procrastinate picking it back up. I do think it had a great premise. And the artwork is lovely. It just wasn't the story for me. Or at least not at the moment.
Thank you to Legendary Comics, Legendary Comics YA and Netgalley for providing me with a review copy.
Other than it being a quick read, this graphic novel didn't really grab me as others have. I wish the plot would've been more involved and I connected more with the characters, They all seemed to be some form of stereotype and the plot was lackluster. Loved the art style though!!!
I should start by saying that the file I was sent for the eARC was formatted very poorly, it was almost unreadable. I had to piece a lot of panels together, sometimes from one page to the next.
That being said, I enjoyed this. I think what stands out the most for this graphic novel is the characters. There's a sizable group of friends, each unique and interesting. The plot -- seriously scary things happening to and around a coven that previously was just trying to make something happen -- is cool and right up my alley. But there was just barely not quite enough events or action to be what kept me reading. What kept me interested was really the characters and their personalities. I'd look forward to the plot picking up a bit and some answers coming/solutions found for this group's demon problems.
If this continues to entertain, I would say it would make a cool TV show, a la the Pretty Little Liars reboot. I'd watch!
Fun and cute. Definitely will find an audience and a fan based. I can see this being a long running series.
