Kathryn never disappoints! Thank you netgalley and Bookouture for the ebook!!! I’ve read all of Kathryn’s books and patiently await her new releases! This one is worth it just like every one of her books! If you love psychological thriller you will not be disappointed!!! Loved all the twists and turns!
Absolutely loved this book! Kathryn Croft writes amazing suspenseful books that keep you guessing the entire book.
I loved how the story was told by both the mother, Lori and her daughter, Jess' flashing back and forth between the past and present. As Jess tries to piece together her mother's past you follow along with Lori from the past as the two stories combine to give you the truth of what really happened. Loved this book!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC!
This one didn't feel like a thriller/mystery. I tried to get into it,but it just wasn't for me. I felt a lot of the stuff wasn't necessary.
My family said he killed my mother. They lied…
Told in two timelines, The Suspect kept me on my toes doing on my own super sleuthing while trying to figure out who killed Jess's mother. Secrets and lies are the name of the game here. But who is lying and what secret are they protecting? There is a sense of need and want in this book. Jess was just a little girl asleep in her stroller when her mother was murdered. She has no memory of that day. She has been told who killed her mother but when he approaches her and proclaims his innocence, Jess searches for the truth. She not only wants to know what happened to her mother but needs to know. She wants the truth so that she has closure. But will searching for the truth put her in danger?
The past storyline is told by Jess's mother. The present is told by Jess. I loved the going back and forth and learning more details the same time that Jess did. I enjoyed the suspense, tension and mystery in this book. I felt for Jess as she longed to know the truth. I also felt for her mother as well. I could feel her frustration as she wanted answers, and some were not being forthcoming with her.
This was a gripping murder mystery that was intriguing, full of twists and had a jaw dropping ending.
I had both the book and audiobook and felt the narrator did a great job.
My family said he killed my mother...they lied...
Jess was just two years old when her mother was killed on Clapham Common as she sat in her stroller, screaming with tears streaming down her face. She didn't know the person who struck her mother but her mother did as she begged for her daughter's safety.
Now twenty eight years later, Jess lives a secluded life, works from her home studio as a photographer and is afraid of parks. After what happened to her mother, Jess can never set foot in them without thinking of what she lost that day. And the man who took it away from her...and got away with it. Then one day, she sees his face in a crowd watching her...recognises his face from the papers. He killed her mother but the police couldn't gather enough evidence to charge him...and so he walks free. But is he really?
Nathaniel French approaches Jess one day with the sole intent on telling her what he knows; what he has discovered. But understandably she doesn't believe him. Why should she? All her life she has been told that he is the man who killed her mother. It's what everyone thinks, despite no charges ever being laid.
Jess has always wanted to know the truth about what happened to her mother but thought that would never happen. When Nathaniel approached her in the street she was quick to dismiss him but reluctantly hears him out. Before they part he presses a business card into her hand with his phone number on. At first she doesn't entertain anything he has to say but the more she thinks about it, the more it starts to make sense. Maybe he is innocent after all. He drip-feeds her bits of information but is reluctant to discuss it over the phone and they arrange to meet. But he never arrives. A few days later, he is found dead. And everything he had to tell her died with him.
Now Jess is suspicious. If Nathaniel really was innocent then someone had a very good reason to silence him before he revealed the truth to Jess. But the question was, who? Jess decides to do a little digging and in doing so makes some startling discoveries along the way. Someone had been following Nathaniel and he expressed fear for his safety. Now Jess fears that someone is following her too. But why? What do they think she knows?
In her quest to delve into her mother's murder, Jess finds herself up against a lot of resistance from her family. Her mother's family, her father - they all claim they are a private family and have no wish for everything to be dragged back up all over again. But doesn't Jess deserve to know the truth? Doesn't her mother deserve justice?
Meanwhile, her sister Zara is intent on hooking her up with a friend of her boyfriend's, Gabriel, insisting that he is just an all round nice guy. And he is, when they inadvertently meet. Jess is reluctant to admit that she likes him but she is still nursing her wounds over the end of her previous relationship with longtime boyfriend Harrison, with whom she has remained friends. In fact, it is Harrison who proves to be the most trustworthy and the one Jess can count on throughout all that's to come.
This is my first foray into Kathryn Croft (from memory) and I enjoyed the journey very much. Throughout the story I had so many questions about things that didn't add up, didn't make sense which had me investigating the mystery alongside Jess. But unlike Jess, as the reader I was privy to her mother's narrative in the past timeline which gave me the building blocks to begin theorising what I think happened. I was scratching my head for much of the book until a "big secret" (that I didn't think was so huge) was revealed and slowly the pieces began to fall into place. I had longed pieced it all together before the final reveal but it didn't ruin the mystery for me. In fact I love it when I am able to work it out before the book's conclusion.
In story unfolds through Jess in the present day and Lori, her mother, in the past in 1992 and 1993. I have to say some of what Lori did was questionable to say the least. None of her behaviour made a whole lot of sense, even when she confessed to it, except when it came to Jess. I loathed her mother and sister and didn't see why Lori couldn't be honest with them about her situation. Maybe then she wouldn't have died needlessly...who knows? But then if she didn't die, there wouldn't be a story, would there? And everyone's behaviour was suspect to say the least. Every. Single. One. Of. Them. I really felt for Lori. All she wanted was the best life for Jess...and she so nearly had it.
Overall, THE SUSPECT is a compelling mystery filled with secrets, lies and deceptions spanning three decades. I thoroughly enjoyed it. My one complaint would be with the epilogue. I felt it only needed Jess' narrative; the second narrative following hers spoilt it.
I would like to thank #KathrynCroft, #NetGalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheSuspect in exchange for an honest review.
This review appears on my blog at https://stinathebookaholic.blogspot.com/.
I received this ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I was hooked on this story immediately, it just draws you in straight away.
The story flips between Jess Now and her mum Lori Then which I enjoyed as you get the build up to what the truth actually is from both sides.
I had two suspects in mind but I wasn’t sure because how could they have done that?, the author gave you a few red herrings and hints and maybe I was swayed by them ha!.
The two HUGE twists had me reeling! I just couldn’t believe it, if you like to be shocked read this fantastic book.
The Suspect by Kathryn Croft Narrated by Tamsin Kennard was an excellent audiobook from start to finish and I loved it. This book was full of twists and turns throughout with so many lies, that just had to on the edge of your seat several times.........So much tension, just from one book made this an Excellent book.
I highly recommend this book The Narrator was excellent and just made you wanting more and was so hard to put it down.
It has been twenty years since Jess lost her mother to a brutal murder. Only two at the time, Jess has no memories of that devastating loss. Always curious about the loss of her mother, she becomes obsessed about finding out what happened. Her mother was named Lori. One day Jess is approached by a stranger who insists on talking to her so that he can tell her that he was wrongly accused of her mother’s murder. Now Jess really wants to know what happened, once and for all.
The first person she goes to is her father. After all, wouldn’t he want to know the truth as well? Shockingly, he tells Jess to leave things alone. He is unwilling to discuss things further. Adamant even. This pushes Jess even further. She has so many questions and the more she wants to know, the more she learns. She begins to unravel a web of deceit, lies and secrets.
This is a dual timeline story. We have Jess now, in the present. But then there is Lori, before her death. There is a story to be told and Kathryn Croft does it perfectly. She pulls the reader into both the story of the present but also the story of the past. The twists were many, and the ending was truly shocking, thus making her The Suspect a well-written, captivating story. I was able to listen to this thrilling book that was smoothly narrated by Tamsin Kennard, making this an even more compelling read.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

The Suspect is a great story with plenty of suspense, twists and turns. I really enjoyed how it was told from the two points of view - Lori in the past and Jess in the present - and it kept me guessing throughout.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
WHO KILLED LORI???! That is the big question of this book and the one I needed the answer to!!! It’s the one question Jess thought she knew the answer too – who killed her mum…
Everyone thinks they know who killed Lori but it was never proven – the old chestnut of innocent until proven guilty is right out the window for this one. But when the suspect walks into Jess’s life professing innocence, Jess begins to question things especially when he turns up dead!
As I got involved in Jess’s life, with the sporadic throwback to events leading up to Lori’s untimely demise, I was thrown into turmoil. Like Jess, characters in the present were lying to me, their past behaviours paved the way for masses of mistrust making everyone a suspect!
Kathryn Croft has created a complex thriller which I was addicted to. The relationships around Jess built on secrets and lies blocked my way to the truth so I couldn’t second guess who killed Lori. If you like a thriller to keep you guessing, you can’t go wrong with The Suspect.
The Suspect’s storyline flows back and forth between Jess and her murdered mum Lori, who is responsible for hiding this horrific crime? it should have been an exciting whodunnit, but I found it to be a slow read, with too many drawn out moments!
Jess can’t stop until she solves this mystery, who should she trust and why is it a cold case?
I kept reading as I wanted to know who could live knowing that they committed a murder! I struggled to stay focused but a great twist at the end!
Thanks to Bookouture, NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a great read. I loved all the twists and turns. I love when you read psychological thriller and you feel like your hot on the case yourself. You know its a good book at that point. I can't wait to read more by Kathryn Croft. I would highly recommend this book if you love a good thriller.
Thanks NetGalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this ARC in advance.
This is a great story that jumps between point of views; the mothers past and the daughters present. The main character, Jess, mother was murdered when she was just a child as they took a walk through the park. Years later the suspect comes back into the picture.
Thank you Netgalley, the author and publisher for my ARC.
Just wonderful. I could not put this one down. Gripping. Addictive. Suspenseful. Just absolutely wow! Loved this one.
When Jess was just a toddler, her mother, Lori, was brutally murdered while they were walking in the park. Twenty years later, a man approaches Jess on the street. He was the main suspect in her mother's murder, but he swears he is innocent. Why has he approached her now, after all these years? Things get even more complicated when he ends up killed just before he is about to reveal something to her.
Jess' father is adamant that she leave the past alone. Why dredge up painful memories after so long? Jess cannot put it behind her, and in the process of trying to find answers, she realizes she can't trust anyone.
This was my first book by Kathryn Croft and I really enjoyed it! I felt like I was reading some sort of true crime podcast, where we are sure we know the killer, but how do they get caught? I suspected everyone and was definitely not quite expecting the ending! While I did find parts of the book to drag, it definitely kept me intrigued, and I enjoyed it!
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review!
Jess is shaped by her mother’s murder as a toddler. How much of the truth has she been told. How much had this altered the course of her life. Suspenseful read as z Jess comes to terms with who she can and cannot trust.
The Suspect is a suspenseful domestic thriller. This is the story of Jess whose mother was murdered while walking her in the park when she was a toddler. The man accused was never arrested or convicted but carried the stigma all his life. Years later when Jess is an adult, he starts to follow her, finally faces his fear and tries to talk to her to tell her the truth.
Jess has trust issues and keeps people at a distance. She notices a man who seems familiar, but she is not sure why. He tries to explain that he is not the person who killed her mother. Afraid and reluctant to listen to him she wants to run from him, but something makes her listen. He claims he is innocent, and her family has been lying to her for years about what happened to her mother. Before he can disclose the truth, he ends up missing and then murdered.
The book is told from two points of view, Lori, Jess's mother in the past, and Jess in the present. There are many suspects who are keeping secrets from Jess in this story. It twists and turns with each chapter. I suspected who might have done the deed, but I was wrong. This was a roller coaster ride; I couldn't put down.
Jess has lived her life in fear every since her mom was murdered when she was a small child. Jess was always led to belive that it was a stranger in the park by the name of Nathaniel but when Nathaniel approaches Jess many years later with proof that he was more than a stranger to her mom and tells Jess that she's in danger and that he's innocent, Jess has to start questioning everything she knew about her mom and her family!
The Suspect is a slow burn abound with family secrets! It's told from the current point of view of Jess and of Jess's mom leading up to her murder! There are some anticlimactic moments but overall, the ending did come as a surprise! If you like a good psychological family drama, this is a good read for you!
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Jessica Moore was just a little girl when her mum Lori was killed in the park right in front of her, but Jess remembers nothing about that fateful day, now twenty years later and she comes face to face with the man that killed her mum, he insists he had nothing to do with it and needs to speak to her about what happened back then, but before she has chance to listen to him, he is also found dead. Who wanted him out of the way, and why are the people she trusts the most, her family, lying to her?
The Suspect is a dual timeline story told from the perspectives of mum Lori back in the early nineties and Jess, her daughter in the present day. This is a fast paced domestic thriller which gripped me from the start, the author creates authentic characters, believable storylines and great twists. I was certain I'd worked out who the perpetrator was, but then something would happen that would change that perception, then that final twist left me shell-shocked. The author covers topics such as sibling rivalry, adultery and much more, delving into how far loved ones will go to keep a secret hidden. If you like a thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat and second guessing throughout, this is definitely one for you. It's the fourth book I've read by this author and I'm already looking forward to her next one!
I'd like to thank Bookouture and Netgalley for the auto approval, I will post my review on Goodreads now and Amazon on publication day.
Domestic psychological thriller isnt my first choice, but this one grabbed my attention since the first sentences. The plot is slow burn deliciously when open all layers family secrets I devoured at one sitting.
The Suspect is following a young photographer name Jess who for decades trying to continue life normally after her mother being killed at park when she was a child. The suspect never brought to justice until he come to approached her on the street. This effort make her digging back the mysteries surround her mother death include open all family secrets.
Well.... This is my first read from the author and I absolute her storytelling style. It is give me hint melancholy at Lara POV and strong vibes at Jess part. It is rare skill from author to make distinction difference voice between characters. Some characters actions kinda odd and some filler found at plots part. But overall the story is solid, engaging and I enjoyed until last page.
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for provided my copy. I enjoyed my reading time and my thoughts are my own.
