Maisie leaves her home in the UK to solo hike the West Coast Trail in Canada. While waiting at the bus, she meets siblings Sera & Ric and they instantly hit it off. They spend the first few days together before something goes terribly wrong.
25 years later, body remains are found on the trail. A woman named Laura is panicked by the news and believes she is being stalked by someone who was involved with the incident.
I REALLY liked this book. It was somewhere between 4-4.5⭐️ for me. It had everything that I love in a novel. Short chapters, different POVs, Cliff hangers, and some clever plot twists that I didn’t anticipate.
While it was slightly predictable, I still couldn’t put it down! I read it in one day.
If you’re interested in an easy, unputdownable thriller, I would recommend giving this one a read!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley, Canelo and Jenny Blackhurst for an opportunity to read an advance copy of THE HIKING TRIP, scheduled for publication 5 January 2023. This is a great suspense novel — it kept me interested and eager to learn the story. A young unworldly woman goes from Great Britain to Vancouver to walk the West Coast Trail. It is filled with deep, dark secrets, lying, cheating, drugs, sexuality and of course a murder. I didn’t know who to believe and trust throughout the entire storyline and it turned out there was good reason for that. The end was twisted beyond what anyone could imagine. A great read overall.
The blurb of this book got me hooked immediately and made me want to request this ARC, so when I started actually reading it I said a little prayer, hoping that the book would not let me down. And I'm glad to say... it didn't and I actually rated it 4 stars. Here is why:
First of all, the story got me hooked on from the start of chapter one. As soon as I started reading the questions started popping up in my head. There was so much I wanted to know! It's very intriguing and you just want to figure out what happened and what the big secrets are.
Th story switches between past, present and media coverage (newspapers, podcasts, forums). I think this really helped build the story. This way the story moves toward what really happend out of different directions. This way the story doesn't become boring. There were often little cliffhangers at the end of the chapter, after which the next chapter moved back to the present. It worked out perfectly for this book.
The characters were really well written. The past and present versions of them are different, which is good since a lot of time has passed since what happend at the hiking trip. The characters have grown and lived half of their life since the events in Canada. The way the characters were written I could even look past the secrets that they were keeping and understand the reasoning behind the actions they took.
Everytime I thought: 'Now I figured it out', and then I was proven wrong, and eventually it turned out I was totally wrong, I did not expect this ending. There were a few plottwists, some more surprising than others. Everytime I thought we were going to find out what really happened the story switched back to a different part of the timeline. It was teasing me so much!
The reason why I gave it four stars was because I thought the ending was a bit sudden. I feel like there are still some questionmarks in my head that should need answering. I wasn't 100% satisfied with the ending that I got.
Oh this one was twisty. Maisy sets out on a solo hiking trip and ends up with two strangers who she quickly finds herself enamored with. She loses her virginity and almost becomes a whole new person. Of course, this is a thriller so someone does die and someone innocent does time.
Maisy is young and inexperienced. She is not from the streets.
She makes about 100 bad decisions and this shapes the book. She isn't the only one making bad choices, though.
I have endless love for the twists in this book.
This was and excellent ready and very clever in how things develop. I've not read all this author's books yet so will be looking out for her other books.
This was a good thriller. A back packer goes missing and twenty years later a body is found. Told in two time periods the reader is gradually given the story and all the secrets that were hidden. My only complaint was I felt the ending was rushed and very confusing. This book could have been so much more. An okay read.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
I received this arc through net galley and the publisher.
I enjoyed the story and didn’t guess the twist as I thought I knew who Laura really was. I like the story going back and forward from 1999 to the present day.
4 stars
Just finished reading The hiking Trip.A page turning book, full of surprises, liked the way the chapters alternate between the past and the present, looking at the story through the characters eyes, all in all I did not like the main character Laura,as she caused so much heart ache all around and ruined so many people's lives and never suffered the consequences for her actions and went to led a Happy ever life,
It's been twenty years since a British backpacker vanished from a Canadian hiking trail. Laura has tried to put the memories of what happened behind her, but news stories announcing that human remains have been found have her fearing what other secrets might be revealed. Then someone starts targeting her family. The story shifts between the days on the hiking trail, snippets of news reports, and what's happening to Laura now. Cliff hangers kept me turning pages without making me feel manipulated by the author. I thoroughly enjoyed this one.
Maisie attends a hiking trip alone on the West Coast Trail of Canada when her good friend backs out on her. However, she has no problems making some friends along the way. One of girls she meets is named Seraphine. Things heat up one crazy day and Seraphine goes missing and is thought to have been murdered. Twenty-Five years later, Laura, a mother of two, hears the news that remains of a body have been found on the trail. She starts to panic. Who is Laura really? And what secrets is she hiding?
This was my first book by Jenny Blackhurst. I will say it won't be my last. This was a really great story filled with twists that I did not see coming. I always enjoy a nice surprise. That being said, this was a quick and easy read that I think all thriller lovers will enjoy! Highly recommend!
Many thanks, to NetGalley and Canelo for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Great thriller! Maisie goes on a hiking trip alone when her friend backs out. First she encounters three goth looking people. Then she ends up hiking with a brother and sister team. However, Ric makes a comment very early on in which he basically revealed they are not related. That was predictable to me. The book goes back and forth between Laura present and Maisie in the past. Who killed Sera? Whose bones were discovered? Who is coming after Laura and what it their connection? Great character development. Great suspense-this one kept me hungry! So many twists and jaw dropping secrets!
Loved this book! Maisie continues on to a hiking trip in Vancouver although her friend backs out. She befriends a brother and sister duo along the way. Ric ends up leaving them, and Sera gets mad at Maisie. Then Maisie ends up dead. But is Maisie lying about what happened? Or did she really see who killed her? This book goes back and forth between Laura now, and Maisie then. All along you think Laura is Maisie in the present, but just wait! And then you think Mitch is coming to find Laura to get revenge. But just wait! Who are all these people and who is really after her? Great suspense!
Pacy Narrative..
Backpackers, hiking trails, secrets and a body. A British backpacker goes missing, twenty years later a body is discovered. Who do the remains belong to and what secrets are being kept and by whom? Effectively conveyed via a dual timeline format, this easy read suspense has much to like. From the deftly drawn and credible cast of characters, to the swiftly moving storyline and the pacy narrative with twists aplenty.
This was a good thriller. The premise had me very excited and the book was interesting. This is my first time reading Jenny Blackhurst and I would try another book by this author.
I enjoyed this thriller! I was on the edge of my seat and flew through it! There were surprise twists and turns at every corner and I had so much fun/
Having not read a book from this author before. I enjoyed it. Okay i didn't find the characters very intriguing but the book was full of some good twists that i enjoyed
I have read a couple of this authors book and this one is definitely one of her best. I raced through it had to know how it was going to end and it definitely did not disappoint.
It is a fast paced psychological thriller which will keep you on the edge with the twists and turns. It is told in two timelines one present and the other in 1999 while on the hiking trip. Will definitely be recommending this book to all.
Thank you NetGalley and Canelo for the copy of The Hiking Trip. Wow, this was a great premise! Unfortunately, Laura was a boring character and was so fixated on one person as being behind all of the bad things happening to them that it got tiresome and unbelievable the more we learned about that person. I usually enjoy dual timelines, but these felt like completely different books because they never overlapped at all. This book wasn’t really for me, but if you’re looking for a bunch of twists you will love this fast, easy read.
The Hiking Trip by Jenny Blackhurst was a quick, enjoyable read!
It was interesting and entertaining and kept me reading.
Well written with a plot that grabbed me but I was ultimately waiting for something to jump out at me.
Good story, well developed characters I was waiting for that WoW moment!
I will definitely pick up Blackhurst's future books!
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Canelo,
Thank You for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this eARC!
This book pretty much went where I was expecting it to, and that's OK.
I enjoyed the writing style, and the smug knowledge I'd guessed some twists.
I was not so smug when other twists came out of nowhere!
Enjoyable story, with an interesting main character who actually asks the same sort of questions I would.
A good read. .
