Thank you Netgalley and the publishing house for allowing me to read and enjoy this book.
I can't even tell you how excited I was to receive this. My favorite series is the GGGTM trilogy so this just fueled my love for those book even further. Getting more information about Pip wasn't needed but I'm so glad it was included. If not receiving this as an e-arc I would of bought it and I still might so I can complete the set. I also love how the cover matches the others! 5 stars obviously.
This was such a fun novella and a perfect addition to the A Good Girls Guide To Murder series. It even has a little bit of foreshadowing if read first or it serves as a nice palette cleanser after you’ve finished the trilogy as I have.
A 1920s murder mystery party is taking place at Connors house and everyone is given a character. Pop is assigned to Celia. The party is really reminiscent of the movie Clue with Tim Curry (which I LOVE) but Pip is taking it so, so seriously.
Clues are slowly revealed to the reader as they’re revealed to Pip and it’s really fun to guess along with her!
5 stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Childrens for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Prior to investigating her town’s real-life murder, Pip Fitz-Amobi reluctantly investigated a fictional murder at her friend’s murder mystery party. Six friends gather, dressed in 1920s garb, and begin to unravel the clues that will lead them to the identity of the murderer. Pip is drawn into the world of mystery and murder, and now the game isn’t the only case on her mind.
This “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” novella acts as a prequel to the AGGGTM series, and was a fun read that foreshadowed some of the events to come in the primary trilogy of books. I enjoyed seeing the beginning of Pip’s “detective mode” personality, along with her relationships with her friends whom we see featured throughout the series. I’ve never participated in a murder mystery game, and I enjoyed experiencing it through the characters in this novella!
Thank you to Delacorte Press and NetGalley for my gifted e-book!
Holly Jackson is one of the best mystery writers for teens currently. Her plotting is tight. Her characters are well-developed. Her voice is unique. I highly recommend this prequel to her series "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder'.
This was a cute fast read with our favorite heroine Pip solving another mystery but luckily something a little lighter; a murder mystery dinner party! This was not my favorite story from A Good Girl's Guide to Murder series, but a cute story nonetheless!
This was a fun little novella which is a prequel to the other books in the series. We get a bit of insight to Pip and her love of figuring out the mystery and true crime/cold cases.
This is such a fun read! I have been to a murder mystery dinner before and they are so neat. I love getting a bit more on Pip. I enjoyed her most in book one and this reminds me of that! Such a quick and easy read!
I’ve devoured all of the other books by Holly Jackson. I did like this one, but maybe because it happens before the other books, I found myself wanting the characters as they have grown, not how they were!
Another great read from the GGGTM series, I enjoyed getting to be with Pip again for a fun murderous dinner party.
Getting to see Pips mind work prior to the series was fun to read and glimpse into her thinking and solving skills.
A more light hearted YA mystery for readers who are looking for a lighter version of the series since the bulk of the three book series is a bit more darker.
I read this without reading the other books by Holly Jackson. Now I am hooked and will pick up the rest of the series.
This novella is a prelude to the series and is an account of a murder mystery dinner. A fast paced read and a glimpse of Pip's mind at work. I loved it!
Thank you NetGalley and Delacorte Press for gibing me the opportunity to read this!
My students will thoroughly enjoy this novella that gives more insight into Pippa's life. I have readers who will devour everything that Holly Jackson writes, and this will be no different!
I absolutely loved this book. I read this series a few months ago, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since! This book was everything that I was hoping for: the characters we all know and love, a murder plot, humor, friendship, and everything in between. I am very sad to see this series come to a close, but I will definitely have to do a re-read soon! Having read the whole series, I do think that this one should be read before the others to get the full experience. 5/5 ⭐️
Pippa has been invited to a murder mystery party. This one is 20’s themed and everyone has dressed the part. At first Pip thinks this will be some good fun and games but in the end she actually becomes quite competitive. This seems to be the spark that ignites her to peruse the Andie Bell murder case for her senior project. We get to see her detective personality grow throughout. It felt like reading about a game of Clue.
Since this is a prequel to the whole series, you can read it even if you haven’t read any of the other books. I thought it was a cute little introduction to what’s to come in the series and also to the author’s writing style. It was a quick read but not entirely necessary as the story doesn’t really pertain to the rest of the series except the mention of the Andie Bell case. It was not my favorite because it seemed like an add-on that didn’t have much of a point. I am still looking forward to reading the rest of the series though. The reason I did like it is because I am actually going to my first murder mystery party in April so this was perfect timing, It gave me a bit of insight of what I will be in for. Thank you Netgalley and Random House for the gifted eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a fun little novella in addition to the good girl's guide to murder series! There were a few moments where I got nervous together with Pip during their mystery game. I would definitely recommend if you liked the series already! Love this cover btw :)
Thank you to NetGalley for providing an eARC of this book!
(3.5) This was a fun, short novella for fans of AGGGTM series. I will say, if the original book is a retelling of the Serial podcast, this book is a 1920s/2017s version of Knives Out. Following the characters that we know as Pip’s friends, they all spend an evening in character at a murder mystery party. It was a little far-fetched how in character some of them were throughout the night (I think that teens would be asking for their phones back much sooner) but it worked for just a fun, short murder mystery! I also appreciated how the ending tied together to the beginning of AGGGTM.
I LOVED Pip and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series- so I was stoked when Kill Joy came out! While this novella lacked some of the "meat" the series had it was still a fantastic and fun read.
I absolutely adored the A Good Girls Guide to Murder series, so I was excited to learn about a prequel coming out. I knew I would read it even before reading the synopsis.
Kill Joy has the same feel as the longer books, but it being a novella, it was a faster read. Pip joins her friends for a Murder Mystery party, which was a super fun plot idea -- especially because my friends and I are going to be doing one at the end of April.
I enjoyed the book overall, but I definitely prefer the main series, and I think other readers agree -- Kill Joy, while rated pretty high, is still about a half star lower for the average rating. I really enjoyed getting to visit these characters again, as well as seeing how Pip got the idea to use the murder of Andie Bell as her senior project.
I was super excited about this book but once I realized it was a prequel I was a little bummed. I loved being back with Pip but I think knowing it was just a murder mystery party there wasn’t as much suspense and knowing it was before everything that happened. I did like the book but it just wasn’t what I was expecting. I hope that if people read this book before they start the original series that it doesn’t hinder their want to continue cause the main series is amazing.
I love a good murder mystery party. Pretending to be someone else for a while, some who may or may not be murderous, sounds fun. Reading about one, is slightly less exciting, but Jackson's writing and twists of suspense make for a good read nonetheless.
This is the type of book that you read because you like the characters and want to know more about them, not the type of book you read randomly. Without knowing the characters, it’s not that thrilling of a story. Especially if you’re wanting a true murder mystery.
Don’t get me wrong, I still quite enjoyed it, but I wouldn’t reread it like I would the others.
Kill Joy by Holly Jackson is a cute novella that I found to be enjoyable but not as good as the rest of the series. As a fan of Jackson's previous books, I was excited to dive into this latest addition to the series. While it was a quick and easy read, I didn't feel like it had the same level of depth and intrigue as the other books in the series.
The plot was interesting, but it didn't quite captivate me like the previous books did. The characters were likable enough, but I didn't feel as invested in their story as I did with the other characters in the series. That being said, it was still a fun read and it was nice to revisit some of the familiar characters.
One of the things I appreciated about Kill Joy was the way Jackson continued to address important themes such as mental health and trauma. However, I felt like these themes weren't explored in as much depth as they were in the previous books, which left me feeling a bit unsatisfied.
Overall, while Kill Joy wasn't my favorite book in the series, it was still an okay read that I would recommend to fans of the series. If you're looking for a cute novella with some familiar characters and a decent plot, then this book is definitely worth checking out.
Thank you Net Galley for providing me with an early access view of this novella!
