This is a novella that takes place before the events of the main series. Honestly, I would prefer a novella after the events of the main series. It’s hard having read the original trilogy and then going backwards to this because all of the characters aren’t as edgy.

It’s a fine short piece of fiction that has Pip and her friends playing a murder mystery game. Pip gets super into the game and it inspired her for her senior capstone project.

Honestly seeing her friends like this it was kind of hard to believe. Once again probably because I read the trilogy and in the last book the friends were pretty splintered apart. And with it being a game the stakes are so low (and that is VERY different from the main trilogy).

Honestly this story doesn’t add anything I would skip it.

Pair this with a mysterious merlot the queen of mystery is back with this one 📖🍷

I *audibly* screamed when I got approved for this ARC since the Good Girls Guide series was one of my all time favorites! This super fun novella actually takes place BEFORE the first book and was so much fun, I highly recommend it for any fans!!

👍🏼 closed door mystery
👍🏼 game night *GOALS* P.S. can someone please make this game?!
👍🏼 PIP. One of my favorite MC’s ever.
👍🏼 I loved getting to go back in time all the way to the very beginning of this story, so much has happened over the course of three books that it was just so fun to have more time with them.

👎🏼 I could’ve probably done a whole additional book I loved this so much! (This is a shorty at around ~150 pages!)

A HUGE thanks to and Holly Jackson, Random House Children's and Net Galley for the chance to read this one before it comes out! Now, off to plan my re-read of the GGG series….

The prequel I didn't know I needed! What a fun read--a meaningful introduction to Pip and so many of the characters in Holly Jackson's other books. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for access to an ARC in exchange for an unbiased review.

An immaculate thrilling lead up to the start of an obsession!

Pip and her friends, participate in a 1920's murder mystery dinner, where they playfully (some more invested than others) immerse themselves in trying to find who murdered Reginald.

The short faux murder mystery was edgy and fun as the group find clues and as we vicariously join them. I was on the edge of my seat every time some one left the table. I could sense the adrenaline pumping through pip as the light flickered or info upturned. Having the group together was nostalgic especially the banter. We bare witnesses to the calm before the storm that would soon come to Pip's life.

There's glimpses of characters that we loved and some that we hated, and hair raising and chilly mentions and details that didn't feel important now, but would be eye opening details into what would come to be capstone information.

One of the few YA authors I enjoy. This one did not disappoint & I really enjoyed the murder mystery party style for the story. Love Pip’s character!

This was a fun short story & I would recommend it!

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for the opportunity to read and review this book.

We all know Pip as the whip-sharp student podcaster that shed light on a murder case that rocked her town 5 years ago. In this Novella, we get to see how Pip got her start on her senior project: a murder-mystery party, As she unravels the clues of this make-believe case, we get insight into how Pip's mind works, and, ultimately, how she got set out on her podcast project.

I'm glad this was a novella, because I don't think this format of the characters playing a murder-in-a-box game translates particularly well into written word. It's awkward at best, and confusing at worst. Some parts of it were still enjoyable, like seeing Pip try to stitch together the clues like we later see her do with the actual case she's solving. Seeing some of the character interactions were fun too, especially because we know them from the main series.

For those of you wondering if you should read this prequel novella before diving into the series, I would recommend just beginning with A Good Girl's Guide to murder. While the cast of characters we came to know in the trilogy are introduced in this prequel, little is done to flesh them out. You'd likely struggle to tell them apart, especially because they are all playing different characters as assigned to them as a part of their murder-mystery party. Characters you don't know roleplaying as different characters won't be a very enjoyable read. I'd say you could read this after reading #1 or #2. You'll probably get more out of it that way.

Overall I felt that this novella didn't add much to the universe. For those that are missing the characters, it may be worth picking up just to revisit them.

This was such a quick read. I love the murder mystery going on. I like the fact that we could see all of the main characters prompts for the mystery. It makes me want to reread the series.

This was a fun little novella that is set in the A Good Girl's Guide to Murder world (seems to fit in the timeline before the first book in the series). Pippa's best friend is hosting a murder mystery evening! Just a few friends, some pizza, no cell phones, and a murder! What could possibly go wrong?

I enjoyed this series so this was a fun way to dip my toes back into Pip's world of chaos and mystery-solving. If you're a fan of Ravi, bad news - he's not a part of this story :( But otherwise, the gang is back and it's a great quick read if you are a fan of this series.

This was a fun little AGGGTM prequel, and I liked how it led right into the first book, so you could read them all in a row if you wanted. Because Pip is Pip, I kept expecting an actual murder instead of just a murder mystery game 😂 but it was super fun trying to figure out the mystery! I did think it ended a bit abruptly but that was because I thought I had almost a hundred pages left and it was just previews of the other books lol

All in all, not a must read, but it was definitely fun!

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children’s/Delacorte Press for the opportunity to read this before pub day on February 28th!

This is an entertaining novella for fans of the Good Girl's Guide to Murder series. It's a prequel to the trilogy and gives readers a peek into the lives of the characters in a very different setting. This time, it's a murder mystery rather than an actual murder. I'd say it's not an essential read but fun for fans of the other books.

I LOVED all three books in the series to A Good Girls Guide to Murder so when I saw this I had to request. It was a nice little prequel. It was a nice glance at where Pippa gets her detective type skills and personality from. even though it’s a game and none of it was real, I was still so immersed in the mystery and the game.

While the premise of this book is fun, it ultimately does not add anything to the series. I think it would have been possible to toe the line between adding to the original trilogy while not being required reading, and I'm disappointed that this book didn't get there. The start and ending were the most engaging parts, but the middle lost that energy.

Thank you Random House and NetGalley for the eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review!

“Maybe she’d been wrong before. Maybe solving murders wasn’t too different from homework after all. She could feel herself falling headfirst into it, the rest of the world fading out.”

Pip and her friends play a 1920s murder mystery game.
Kill Joy can be read at any point in the agggtm series, but there are small bits of foreshadowing included in this book.

The prequel novella I didn’t know I needed! This story is a great introduction to Pips character. You can really see how Pips mind works in this book and also find out what drives her to solve mysteries.

Holly Jackson has done it again. I have no idea how this author can put mystery’s on top of mystery’s and STILL have them be intriguing and make perfect sense, but not solvable until the end. I would play any murder mystery game written by her.

Super quick fun read that I would highly recommend!

Thank you NetGalley for the advanced copy.

I was so excited to read more about Pip and co.! Following along as Pip solves another mystery, albeit this one for a murder mystery party, reminded me of just how much I adore this character! I will definitely recommend this to fellow fans of the series.

Thank you to NetGalley, the Publishers, and Holly Jackson for giving me an ARC! I hadn’t read the previous 3 books and that may have definitely made a difference, but it was still an amazing novella! I know what will be pushed to the top of my TBR list now! It was a fun short read and totally love Pip already!

I love all of Holly Jackson's books and was thrilled when I saw that she wrote a 0.5 book to "A Good Girl Guide's to Murder". This book is a bit different since it's premise is a murder mystery high school dinner. Nevertheless, it was fun revisiting the characters of the series that I enjoy so much! Can't wait for part 3!

I didn’t realize when I got this that it was a novella prequel to A Good Girls Guide to Murder. It was a fun quick read though and now I need to read the rest!
I love a good murder mystery dinner party and learning about Pip and how her mind works.

Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

I was given an eARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

I dunno. I was kinda bored. If you didn't know the characters, there would be so much thrown at you all at once. Don't get me wrong, it's superbly written, and the premise is great. I just felt bored while reading it.

The perfect prequel to the series! This gives us an in-depth look at Pip and the way her brain works and shows us how Pip became interested in the topic for her senior capstone project! Riveting and well done!
