One more mystery with Pip for the road. I didn't love the finale to GGGTM so I was happy to hear about this novella. I was confused by the time period.
If you miss dad jokes and Pip being lovable but self-absorbed, youll enjoy this as much as the rest of the series! I can't wait for more from Jackson. I absolutely loved Five Survive.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review!
This is the prequel to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder. It introduces you to Pip and her friends at a game night party. I personally would love to attend a game party like theirs!
PS I think Pip’s answer is correct!
Thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Kill Joy is such a perfect bow on the top of the AGGGTM series! This novella is set shortly before the events in book 1: A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder. Although it doesn’t give any spoilers to the series itself, I’d recommend reading the series first, rather than reading in chronological order. There are subtle nods to the series that you’d miss the gravity of if you haven’t read—at least—the first book. And honestly, after the series finale, it was so good to join Pip and her friends in a good old fashioned murder mystery, with nothing real at stake. The only thing I was sad about (though I understand because of the timeline), was that Ravi isn’t in the midst of the party/mystery. Ravi’s character is SO GOOD and I missed him here. But again, it wouldn’t be possible for him to be in this one, really, as Pip hadn’t met him yet.
All in all, I couldn’t get enough of the lighthearted murder mystery Pip’s thrown into. The perfect ending to a roller coaster series!
5 stars!
I received an ARC of Kill Joy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
It was lovely to enter Pip’s world again in this novella. I loved the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series so much, and I was happy to meet her before the events of the first book. I did imagine her a little differently, but the murder mystery party was a very cute way to introduce us to Pip’s analytical mind and determination. I think it might make more sense to read after you’ve read the series and know the characters, but would be fun either way.
Enjoyable--yes! Short--Yes! Granted it is a novella. This epilogue is great for fans of the series. It showcases not only where the capstone project idea came from but also Pip's thought process at work. She annihilates the murder mystery game they are all playing--her outcome far better.
The gang is playing a murder mystery game, each given a role and clues to follow. Pip shows her handiwork and she thinks everything through. A the novella ends, we are reminded about her favorite history teacher, the murder that rocked the community, and Ravi Singh looking so much like his brother
This was so much fun. Honestly, my main complaint for the main series is that we don't get to see enough from Pip's friends and this just makes my wildest dreams come through. Their dynamic is so much fun and I laughed at several points throughout this. The whole murder mystery party storyline was also just a whole lot of fun. The ending was a bit dissapointing to me, I agree with Pip on that one.
KILL JOY by Holly Jackson is a prequel novella to the A GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE TO MURDER series, and follows Pip and her friends as they dive head first into a murder mystery party where someone is the killer…
I definitely recommend reading the series before picking this one up since it will give you a better insight into the characters and their relationships with one another, but WOW, I loved being back in this world!
This is a novella, so it wasn’t as long as I would have liked (literally cannot fault the book for that lol), but the story was still so intricately woven and had some fun elements included throughout the story.
The ending was the perfect lead-in to the series and it makes me want to dive into AGGGTM again!
Pick this one up if you need some more Pip in your life!
Huge thanks to NetGalley, Random House Children’s, and Delacorte Press for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

Fantastic!! Our intrepid high school detective at a murder mystery party with her friends. Pip, taking it way too seriously, was both brilliant and hilarious. The ending and the reaction to the ending was perfect.
Holly Jackson has done it again!
The novella is the perfect prequel to A Good Girls Guide to Murder. It read so easily it felt like a short story but it still had everything it needed to be enjoyable and make sense
You definitely need to read the 1st book before this or some of the references don’t hit as well but either way I do this it’s a fun read.
Because it’s so short I don’t want to ruin the content but I would highly recommend this novella if you like the rest of the series
Being back in Pip's incredibly quizzical, intelligent, sometimes stubborn head was so much fun, especially in this much more light-hearted novella relating to the Good Girl's Guide to Murder Series. I appreciated that the series plot was wrapped into the novella as well. This was more of a cozy read than a high stakes mystery with a lot of suspense, so I would not pick it up expecting that. But if you miss some of your old favorite characters and want a more comforting read, this is it!
This was a great prequel to the series!
I loved the murder mystery although I am with Pip the actual ending to the murder mystery really sucked!
What an excellent prequel! Fun, easy to read, and the perfect set-up to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder!
I was absolutely thrilled to get this ARC!!! I love Pippa and have followed this series since the beginning and my only complaint was that this wasn't a full length book. I don't think it was her best in the series but it was still a great "snack" read-quick and easy. It made my day! I think Pippa and her story is the good standard for crime solving podcasters.
Stars: 5/5!
Overview:
Pippa Fitz-Amobi is not in the mood for her friend’s murder mystery party. Especially one that involves 1920’s fancy dress and pretending that their town, Little Kilton, is an island called Joy. But when the game begins, Pip finds herself drawn into the make-believe world of intrigue, deception, and murder.
But as Pip plays detective, teasing out the identity of the killer clue-by-clue, the murder of the fictional Reginald Remy isn’t the only case on her mind …

Let me start by saying that I absolutely loved the GGG trilogy, and the end of As Good As Dead left me close to begging for ANYTHING related to the books (if you know, you know), so I was soooo excited to see this on Netgalley! This is by no means a full-length book but more of a novella at only over 130 pages long, but it is a really interesting look at an event that happened days before the first GGG book. It was so nice to be back with Pip one more time, solving another mystery in this prequel/companion book! In KillJoy, we get a new look at Pip before she started solving real murder cases and at her competitive hard drive that pushes her through the later events of the series.
To answer the questions I have seen surrounding what order to read the series, I personally think you should start with A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and follow it with Killjoy, Good Girl Bad Blood, and As Good as Dead to really get the full impact of the foreshadowing and hints in KillJoy! This way, you are properly introduced to all the characters and can see the massive connection at the end of KillJoy during that final car ride…;)
Whether you have read the series or are looking to start, I know you will love this prequel and companion to the story, and I hope there is another one coming soon (an extended epilogue, maybe…???)! Go pre-order this beauty and read it when it comes out on February 28, 2023!

With the last book of the Good Girl's Guide to Muder, I thought we were done. I had said my goodbyes, but wished that maybe, MAYBE there would be one more book and I’m beyond excited and grateful I get to live in Pips world one more time. And a dinner muder mystery! Be still my heart! I honestly didn’t know there was a prequel out, so having read the series and having the chance to go back in time was an interesting adventure for me.
I loved the set up for this book with the murder mystery theme. It was a nice segway into how Pip devolved her interest from the start, but overall I wish this book was written first instead of after the series. Knowing the end when starting at the beginning, it was hard for me to fully enjoy this book. I think if this book was published first, it would have been a great opening to the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Delacorte Press for the ARC
Thank you netgalley for an early copy before it is republished.
I actually really enjoyed this. I loved revisiting the friends from a good girls guide to murder and seeing their personalities a bit more. I also really loved the murder mystery setting. I don’t usually enjoy novellas that much, but the whole theme of this one really stuck with me.
I’ve been to a murder mystery party before and I honestly loved it so much and this reminded me of that completely. I understood what was going on and i felt like I was the character trying to solve this fun little mystery. It also just reminded me of knives out a lot and was super fun in that way. I just really enjoy all the “secrets” being revealed and betrayals that come to light.
Also pip is so funny because she really gets into it and I just absolutely love that about her. Anyways this is so cute and so much fun!
I enjoyed this novella quite a bit. I love that we get to see Pip be a high schooler and a kid. We start to lose that in the series, which makes complete sense considering everything she has to deal with. It also was great to see how her ideas form and where they came from. I also like that we get to see her interactions/relationships with her friends. Throughout the trilogy, we interact with each of them, but not really as a group. Again, it’s nice to see a teenager interacting with their friends and being a teenager.
It gave me some context to the rest of the series and it also makes me want to reread agggtm to see how this plays into book 1 Pip’s thought process.
This was a cute spin off and, if you enjoyed the AGGGTM series, it’s a fun read, but it doesn’t really add much to the story that we don’t already know.
3.5/5
It was a short cute book, funny at times. Basically all her friends came together to play a mystery crime game, it shows how pip came about loving to investigate crimes she really got into the game. I liked it but didn’t love it it was my least favorite out of the series. It really didn’t stood out for me I thought more would happen then just the game. 3.5 out of 5.
I was so excited when I saw that there was a prequel to Pip's story and completely binged this novella in one sitting!
Kill Joy was a fun Clue style mystery party, and I loved seeing Pip work her way through the mystery in her methodical fashion. It was also neat to see what inspired Pip to start her murder podcasts.
I'm not joking when I say that I completely devoured this engaging mystery in just a few hours, and I loved getting one last glimpse at Pip's world.
Thank you, NetGalley and Random House Chlidren's, for this gifted copy in exchange for my honest opinion.
