I was only able to read the excerpt of this but from what I read it was fantastic. It only gave you the option to open this as a PDF and it wouldn’t open. So that was frustrating. But just reviewing the excerpt was good.
I ended up having to DNF this one around 20%. I just couldn’t get into it. I wanted it to be so good. I loved this series. The first two books were so good. The last one was a bit redundant, but I still liked it. This one was just slow and kind of unnecessary, I think.
I am here for these novellas. They’re getting so popular and it makes me very happy. Not every story needs to be as long as they are. This one was perfect. Just enough and I’m glad to get one last story with these characters!
Pip attended a murder mystery themed party with her friends. She was initially reluctant, but she found herself enjoying solving the mystery and gaining a new passion for detective work.
Kill Joy is a fun and light prequel to A Good Girl Guide to Murder series. I love a good origin story, and this is exactly what fans of Pip needed. I love how we got a peek into why she started her murder podcast. The concept of a murder mystery party was highly entertaining, and it was fun being in Pip’s mind again. The story was entirely too short despite being a novella, and I wanted more. It was still a great backstory and definitely, a must-read.
Thank you to Netgallery and to Random House Children’s Publishing.
Ever wonder why Pippa chose the Andie Bell murder for her Senior Project?
This prequel sets up the Good Girl's Guide to Murder, starting with a murder mystery game played by Pip and her friends. Pip alternates between her story character and herself as things get creepy.
Fun, clever take on a locked room "murder", as Jackson skillfully drops obvious clues to the game, and Pip sleuths a solution that's entirely unexpected.
Great for mystery stans and engaging for teens (and adults) who don't typically want to read!
I loved this series so I was really excited to read this novella and get another look at Pip's life after the murder podcast. This was a fun quick read that focuses on a murder mystery party at a friend's house. Pip continues to use her wits to solve her next murder mystery, this time just a game with her friends. I read the whole thing in one quick sitting, and would highly recommend it to my students.
This quick novella was JUST what I needed to get out of a reading slump. Thank goodness!
This is quick, twisty, and will be highly anticipated by those of the GGGTM series! This is a prequel, so for those that haven't read the series, start here! :)
This is set at a Murder Mystery type of dinner with our favorite characters. You really get to see Pippa weild her detective skills and get down to business!
Would defintiely recommend! Thank you to publishers & NetGalley for my copy of the ARC!
3.75 starts. Thanks to Netgalley and Random House Children's for the ARC. This book was a fresh of breath air I loved seeing Pip and her obsessiveness over a murder mystery even though it was a game. I loved seeing how she saw things that clearly no one else saw. I also loved seeing how the idea came to her for her senior capstone paper.
The twists and turns in this one! Kept me on turning the pages and on the edge of my seat. Highly recommend. This will be incredibly popular!
Love this short novella! It kept me intrigued and set the scene for the upcoming novels. Not always can less than 200 pages bring forth a storyline but I think Kill Joy did just that!
This was such a fun prequel novella to A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. Having read the series I kept forgetting this was the prequel and wondering why they were joking about Sal Signh in it and then I'd be like look here lady, this takes place first.
I like our "first" look at our cast of characters, especially Pip. Of course. It was fun to see her get to involved, cough Obsessed cough, over the game. I loved how she figured it out and then got mad at the makers. But the best part? Seeing her come up with the idea for her project which led us to the events in the first book.
I hope we get some end of the series novellas as well. It was fun to be back with these characters again!
Thanks to Netgalley for sending an e-galley in exchange for an honest review :)

It is so nice to be in Pippa's head again! A bit weird because this is definitely a prequel - though props to Jackson because you can really feel the difference between this Pippa and the Pippa at the end of As Good as Dead. A part of me wishes that had been a story set after the trilogy but only because I want more Ravi and he obviously can't be in this book.
If you like the main trilogy this is a delightful way to spend an hour. If you haven't read the original three, know it's a prequel but I think I would recommend reading it after the trilogy. The characters will make more sense then.
Also I wish real murder mystery party games were this intense!
I just recently finished the GGGTM series and when I found out that there was a novella on the way, I was super excited! However, I think that this disappoints in comparison to the rest of the novels.
Pipa and her friends join together one evening to play a murder mystery game. I don’t feel that there’s really anything special about this game that they play. It’s pretty average.
Pipa learns that sometimes things aren’t as they seem, which inspires her capstone project about Sal Singh’s murder.
It’s an okay little backstory, but definitely not integral to the story. If you are obsessed with the series, you may like this. I’m glad that it was short, otherwise I would’ve felt like I wasted time on this one.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for this ARC!
Your favorite teenage murder detective is back in a new prequel novella from Holly Jackson. Kill Joy is a prequel to A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and features Pip and her friends at a murder mystery dinner party. The party encourages Pip to play along while unknowingly opening up her detective skills as she observes and listens to other players.
Kill Joy is a fun, lighthearted novella coming in at about 150 pages. It’s a breeze to read through and super fun to visit these characters again. It’s a pleasure to get in the mind of PIp again and unravel the mystery at hand.
Rating: 5/5
I absolutely LOVED the Good Girl's Guide to Murder series. I am a huge fan of Pippa and just adore her character. This book was just pure fun. It was nice to jump back into a story with characters I grew to love throughout the series. This book really was a little insight into what made Pippa choose her senior capstone project topic. Overall, I enjoyed it. It was short and just fun. Almost gives you the feeling of watching a mashup episode of your favorite shows. I know that sounds weird, because it is the same characters.... but that feeling was the same. I am excited to add this title to our library. I think many of my regular readers and fans of the series will enjoy it too.
Kill Joy is a super fun novella. We already have fallen for Pip and her crew so to go back and see what lead Pip to a Good Girls Guide to Murder was very interesting. As the story unfolds not only are you drawn into the murder mystery party but start to wonder if something sinister is present in real life. I was kept on my toes the whole time.
This was a fun quick read! It was fun to be back with these characters, but the murder mystery dinner played a really fun role in the whole thing. I really enjoyed it! I could imagine being part of the dinner party and the characters. I loved the switches between the characters and the characters they were playing.
If you have read the Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series and love the characters, you should definitely read Killy Joy. This book takes place before the series.
Pip is invited to a dinner party (aka Pizza), with her friends. The theme?
1920’s murder mystery party. You follow Pip as she tries to put together the clues as they arise in the game.
And since you are given everything she is, you can try to figure out along with her! Can you solve it? Can she?
This is a very short novella, so it was a quick read and very fun. While I really wished it could have been more extensive, I loved being able to spend just a little more time with these characters again. However, I definitely recommend not reading this until you read the main series first.
This was such an unnecessary novella. I know novellas normally ARE unnecessary and just bring some backstory/fun information to the table, but this one literally did none of that. It just made us hate Ant more and shows "see? Pip IS amazing at solving crimes even before the events of book 1 take place". Not much more to say except that you really do not need to read this book, as it's short and boring.
I read A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. This one, Kill Joy is a prequel to book number 1. I received this through Net Galley. This was an unexpected, great way to start the series. I'm impressed!
