An interesting story full of twists, turns, fun characters and overall a book I would consider reading time and time again.
This was such a great prequel to Holly Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. Very short but definitely keeps you entertained throughout the entire thing. If you have already read the series, it's a fun re-introduction to the characters and gives fun insight into the reasons why Pip chooses this case in the first book.
This is your classic murder mystery party story - but without the actual murder. It was intriguing to follow along with Pip as she uncovered clues to the mystery and to try and guess what really happened in the game. Since we don't have the other player's perspectives - it is kind of a game while reading to see if you too can solve the murder mystery. As always, the characters Jackson writes are entertaining and had me laughing at a few points. There is also a very eerie side to this story as well that kept me on edge waiting to see what else would happen.
I will say - I didn't figure out where Pip was going with the clues that were given and I didn't guess the ending overall. I highly recommend this to readers who have already read this series - or to those who want to get started on this amazing series as well. Easily a 4.5-star read that kept me wanting to read and even though it was short (coming in at 130-some pages) - everything was wrapped up and explained in a way that didn't leave me wanting more.
Thank you NetGalley, Holly Jackson and Random House Children’s for the e-arc copy of this novella in exchange for a honest review.
This was such a quick fun read. A novella prequel to the A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series.
I love Pip and this was a fun way to get to know her before her true crime podcast and all the craziness that came along with it.
Pip and friends have a murder mystery party and in true Pip fashion she gets way too into it, and the ending just felt so her.
A great short story on how the series started. Loved learning how Pip found her way to her senior projects. Completed the series with a nice little now on top!
What can I say I am 100% team Pip. This was such a fun quick read that gives a glance at Pips life before her viral true-crime podcast. This novella brings to light just how good Pip is at solving murders which she will go on to prove in the three part book series that follows. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of A good Girl's Guide to Murder series. Thank you NetGalley and Random House Children's for this ARC.
This scratched my "Pip itch". I was not expecting a prequel but glad we got one. I read and enjoyed the "good girls" series so I was excited to win this. As I'm getting older I dont read much YA anymore but Jackson is talented. It was a fun short murder mystery novella that would get you excited for the series if you haven't yet read it.
SYNOPSIS:
Pip & her friends have a 1920's murder mystery party in this prequel to A Good Girls Guide To Murder.
MY THOUGHTS
- I read all of A Good Girls Guide To Murder series, so I am definitely biased in my excitement for Kill Joy.
- Fans of AGGGTM will enjoy seeing the gang back together.
- Very short read.
- With that being said, this doesn’t compare to the rest of AGGGTM, and it’s really just the group playing a murder mystery game
- Would not recommend for folks who have not read the AGGGTM series, as I wouldn’t have been interested in it without being a fan of the series.
TL;DR: ⭐️⭐️⭐️Fans of AGGGTM will enjoy this short read.
Thanks to Random House Children’s, Delacorte Press, and NetGalley for this digital ARC in exchange for an honest review. It's due to be published on February 28, 2023.
Thank you to Delacorte Press for letting me read this early in exchange for an honest review!
I really loved this. I’m always a fan of murder mystery’s and this was a perfect prequel to introduce you to a good girls guide to murder!

Oh my how my cold dead heart absolutely exploded with joy when I saw this on NetGalley. I am obsessed with the A Good Girls Guide To Murder Series. I love everything about Pip and Ravie and the gang that when I finished that last page in As Good As Dead, I felt like I was having the worst breakup in the history of breakups. I felt like I was losing a piece of myself. So to say I was super excited for this prequel is an understatement.

As soon as I was granted this eARC, I dove in! And in true AGGGTM fashion - I was transported into this story and fell in love. Kill Joy is a novella, and is a prequel to the AGGGTM series. In this story we see where Pip came up with the idea of her Capstone project when she attends Connor's murder mystery birthday party. A 1920's murder mystery?! Made me want to have one. But seriously this novella gave me life. I was so hype the entire time. I felt like I was right there alongside Pip trying to figure out who was the murderer, except as much as I would love for it to, my brain could never work as good as hers.

Kill Joy is a short and addicting read that will have you flying through it in one sitting. If you are a AGGGTM fan, you will NEED to pick this one up as soon as it's released on February 28th!

Huge thank you to @netgalley, @hollyjackson and @randomhousechildren for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Have you ever attended a murder mystery party?
I have only one time but I was sick as a dog so I didn’t get to enjoy it much unfortunately.

Thank you Netgalley and Delacorte Press for allowing me to read and review this book! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ah, I missed Pip and her outstanding investigation skills.
I adore A Good Girl's Guide to Murder so when I saw Kill Joy finally become available in the US I knew I needed to read it right away. Kill Joy is a prequel novella before Pip investigates the murder-suicide case of Andie Bell and Sal Singh. Pip is invited to a friend's murder mystery party, think Clue, they each have their own roles to play and find out who the culprit is.
Pip is a very serious character when it comes to winning or at least not wanting to be wrong. I love her brain and thought process as the six friends figure out the puzzle pieces of the mystery. I liked reading the little Easter eggs for A Good Girl's Guide to Murder trilogy. For those who haven't read AGGGTM, you don't need to read it first to understand who's who or what is going on in Kill Joy. You could read Kill Joy first and then go straight into AGGGTM.
Holly Jackson is a beast in the young adult mystery section and I love her writing. I was completely engaged and glued to Pippa's deductions and sleuthing. I love how we end up finding out why she picks the murder case that changed her town as a school project. Pip is one of my favorite characters in the YA genre so it was great to revisit the AGGGTM world and to be gifted even more development on her best character.
Kill Joy is a quick, entertaining read and if you love A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, you will enjoy this novella!
5 stars
This prequel to A Good Girl’s Guide to murder leads us to how Pip decided on her Senior project. Pip is invited to a murder mystery dinner that takes place in the 1920s. All of the characters must dress up to fit their assigned roles. This book has made me want to attend a murder mystery dinner!!!
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Childrens for the advanced copy.
I fully admit I have not yet read Jackson's A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, though it is on my to-read list. I request this ARC because it's a prequel and unrelated to the main series, aside from setting up characters (namely, Pip).
I have to start by saying one of my favorite movies ever is the 1986 cult classic April Fool's Day. If you enjoy this novella, you will love this movie - because it's how I knew I'd enjoy the novella. Murder mystery parties are my jam.
Jackson writes cleanly, concisely, setting up the characters and their personalities really well, along with the "murder mystery". I don't want to give anything away, especially since this is a short story and quick to read, but Jackson does a great job of concisely getting the reader through the night and introducing the clues and everyone's suspicions. This is a smart, well-written YA novella, and honestly has me really looking forward to the rest of the series!
This fun, quick murder mystery party between friends ended up being the BEST prequel for the series. It lead into the story without being super cliche or expected. I loved it!
This is what made me love Holly Jackson! Even just this novella brings back such good memories. I love the fun quirky mystery she created 😊
I have read quite a few Holly Jackson books and was excited to see this on Netgalley. I really enjoyed how it was laid out as a murder mystery party/game and was able to fly through this. Absolutely loved all the twists and turns and what is needed in these types of books.
This book was a page turner from beginning to end. A modern day mystery dinner with a twist. I gotta say I thought I had it figured out in the end. I absolutely did not. Highly recommend. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A Good girls guide to murder is one of my favorite series of all time! I can't believe I didn't realize this short novella existed! I was excited to dive back into that world but for the most impact, I wish i read it closer to when I read the series as a whole!
This was such a cute vignette and pre-cursor to the "A Good Girl's Guide to Murder" series. I love that it was in the format of a murder mystery party that Pip gets the idea to solve the town's biggest cold case.
A fun, quick novella that definitely complements the rest of the series!
4.5⭐️ for this epic start to A Good Girls Guide to Murder 😍
I won’t lie, I wasn’t sure this was necessary to the story since I’ve already read it BUT IT’S SO WORTH IT. And brings so much to light. Especially about Pip and how her mind works. I’m so impressed by her and her determination. I also loved the intro to her friends, and even Ravi. I can’t recommend this series enough!
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review with my honest opinion.*
After loving the AGGGTM series it was great to be back with Pip! While I feel like the series was fully rounded in its own right, I’ll never say no to getting an extra piece of a beloved cast of characters.
Kill Joy is a short prequel novella covering a murder mystery party that presses all of Pip’s mystery-solving buttons. Quick, lighthearted and intriguing, it provided a nice look at Pip’s backstory which I loved. Perfect for anyone looking for a bit more from the world of AGGGTM!
