This story follows a younger Pip and her friends as they attend a 1920s-themed murder mystery party.
My Thoughts:
- This was a fun mystery to follow! It reminded me a lot of the Knives Out whodunnit-style premise
- It was nice seeing Pip immerse herself in the mystery and learn that she has a passion for solving them!
- Also, I really enjoyed seeing snapshots of her friends' personalities! Ant and Lauren have been annoying from the start.
- There were so many explicit mentions and implicit hints to the Andie Bell mystery next book! I might just have to re-read the entire trilogy now
- I loved that Pip's dad, Elliot Ward, Ravi Singh, and Jamie Reynolds were all part of the story!!
Last year I read the entire A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series and thoroughly enjoyed them. I have been craving a little more and while I would have loved a fourth book in the series (I know, I know… let it end already), this was just what I needed.
I loved the peek into Pip’s mind before the Bell case changed her life. With the same mixed media format as the trilogy, it was fun looking at the clues and trying to solve the murder mystery alongside Pip. Thanks to the length I was able to read this in one sitting.
This was overall really enjoyable and it’s giving me the itch to re-read. I will say, though, that I missed Ravi!
The friends gather for a fun murder mystery night, they’re dressed in 1920s clothes and using the lingo. Pip who is playing the game finds herself drawn into solving the make believe mystery. Her friends try to solve it as well, but she gets so caught up in the murder mystery she starts thinking of other things in her life. The clues that are made up and left for them lead them in to a crazy murder mystery to solve.
Thank you to Netgalley & Random House Children's for an Arc in exchange for an honest review!
Kill Joy is available February 28th, 2023. It's a prequel to A Good Girls Guide to Murder.
Now that I've read Kill Joy I Can't wait to read the rest of the series! It gave me knives out vibes!
This was stay up late, can't sleep because I need to finish this to find out what happens good. I loved this!! Wow what an amazing book!
I just reviewed Kill Joy by Holly Jackson. #KillJoy #NetGalley

This is such a fun "murder mystery" prequel. It really gives you an insight in how intellectual and analytical Pip is when trying to solve things. I also really love the foreshadowing at the very end for the events that occur in "A Good Girls Guide to Murder".
Thank you NetGalley and Random House Children's for this arc in exchange for my honest review!
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for a copy of this book in return for my honest opinion.
As soon as I saw I could get my hands on a prequel to A Good Girls Guide to Murder, I knew I needed to read it. As someone who binged reading the three books in the series a few months ago, I was having serious Pip withdrawals. I loved to read a light hearted story about Pip and feel that this prequel gave us a better insight into her character and how she chose her Senior project in the first place. As a shorter book, I don’t have much specifics to say but overall enjoyed it. I liked Holly implementing tidbits of information that come through in the rest of the series. Hopefully this isn’t the end of Pip.
Pip is invited to a Murder Mystery Party at a friends house. Throughout the night clues are revealed and Pip becomes super invested in finding the murderer. This prequel gives insight into how Pip came to the conclusion that she wanted to investigate the real murder in their own town that is showcased in A Good Girls Guide to Murder.
If you liked Good Girls guide to murder you'll love this. It's takes place before and you get more of the characters you have grown attached too! It was a quick read and kept my attention!
This is a short prequel to the AGGGTM series, set during a murder mystery party.
Was it earth-shattering? No, but I was so happy to be back in Pip’s world and to get a little glimpse into her origin story and life before she started her project.
This is a fun, quick, must-read for AGGGTM fans.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This was such a fun short read to get some background on how Pip decided on her topic for her capstone! It was also a great mystery game to get immersed in and I felt myself getting just as invested as Pip was. I absolutely love reading Holly Jackson's work and this AGGGTM novella filled the little hole in my brain and heart that I haven't had filled since finishing the trilogy. I definitely recommend picking up this novella when it releases in the US later this month and letting yourself fill that same void you probably feel!
Being a huge fan of the ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’ (and Holly Jackson!), I was thrilled to get the ARC of KILL JOY coming out on February 28th. Pip and her friends attended a 1920’s themed murder mystery dinner party. It was a short novella, it was a quick read! It gave some insight to how Pip became inspired to solve the murder in her town for her senior project in ‘A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder’. A great read! Thank you Net Galley and Random House Children/Delacorte Press for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for providing me this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
This is definitely great for any fans of the Good Girl's Guide to Murder and for anyone who enjoys mysteries. It serves as a prequel to the first book so you can read this if you haven't read any of the prior books as well.
I'd recommend this book to fans of female-led mysteries as Pip is the twenty-first century Nancy Drew.
On a whim, I decided to request a ARC of Holly Jackson's "Kill Joy" from Netgalley. Low and behold, I was rewarded with my very own advanced reader's copy! For those of you living under a rock, "Kill Joy" is the prequel to the Good Girls Guide To Murder series; it debuts on February 28, 2023.
["Pippa Fitz-Amobi is not in the mood for her friend’s murder mystery party. Especially one that involves 1920’s fancy dress and pretending that their town, Little Kilton, is an island called Joy. But when the game begins, Pip finds herself drawn into the make-believe world of intrigue, deception and murder.
But as Pip plays detective, teasing out the identity of the killer clue-by-clue, the murder of the fictional Reginald Remy isn’t the only case on her mind …"]
This book was sooooo good! It hinted at the original series in many ways. Obvious ones: talking about the case and how Andie Bell was supposedly murdered by her boyfriend, Sal Singh before he killed himself. Less obvious ones: the outcome of the murder mystery and how it's not as it seems and how Pippa saw it even if no one else did (and the outcome of that murder mystery?!?! Holy. Shit.).
This book is a novella, it's about 120 pages long, and it's a great read on a cold morning (and an excuse to stay under a blanket with some cocoa for a couple of hours). You neeeeeed to pre-order this book NOW!

Join a 1920's murder mystery party with Pippa and her friends in this prequel to A Good Girls Guide To Murder
This is an absolute brilliant piece of work. Clues are revealed throughout the night and all the guests must figure out who the killer is. In this novella, you will see the how Pippa evolved into her investigative skills for her capstone project and this book will have you wanting to join a murder mystery party with your friends!
Not only did I love the plot, but I enjoyed how Pip and her friends are with each other - theatrical, suspenseful but hilarious!
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House Children's for the advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
This was such a fun quick read novella! After reading a good girls guide to murder, it was so fun to read of the murder mystery party that occurs prior to the book report!
4.5 stars
This was such a fun addition to the AGGGTM series.
This novella takes place directly before the first book. It's a quick murder mystery game that takes place at Connor's house between Pip, Connor, Cara, Lauren, Ant and Zach with Jamie as the host/murder victim/police man. They all had such fun characters, and they played them well but they also broke character which was really fun and made me laugh.
I loved the mixed media with the clues actually looking like little pages from a murder mystery game. We get background on the characters (Pip's character Celia), we get clues placed around the house, we get lines to tell the other characters to imply they were the killer. It was so well thought through.
It was obvious from the beginning the reason for this novella, but I won't say because I don't want to spoil it. It was such a clever way to lead into the first book if you decide to read it first, but also really fun to already have all the pieces and know the characters if you read the trilogy first.
Definitely a must read if you loved this trilogy!
I saw one of my friends mention this book and was so excited to learn about this little novella! Many thanks to the publisher for approving me to review it, since I requested it the moment I saw it 😉 This is set before the events of the GOOD GIRL’S GUIDE books as a prequel novella. Pip’s group of friends gather for a murder mystery party and from there, Pip’s interest in the Andie Bell case is sparked. It was cool to see how those two things connect for Pip and inspire her capstone project.
It was nice to be back in this series for a little bit! I really enjoyed the overall premise and following along with the murder mystery they worked to solve. It was interesting to read about this group of characters, especially Pip and a couple of others, now that I’ve completed the series and seen how everyone’s story ends.
Overall, this was a fun little read that GGGTM fans should enjoy. Jackson tried to make it more interesting with some spooky things and cliffhangers for the chapters to make the reader think something more might be going on beyond the party/case.
Now I need to look into how to host my own murder mystery party…
Excellent short read!! I haven’t read the other books in the series but this definitely made me want to!! Cute, quirky and fun, set as a murder mystery dinner between friends!
A solid novella that gives us a chance to jump back into the AGGGTM world and reveals how Pip was inspired to choose the murder of a local girl as her senior project.
It was nice to get to be able to be with all of these characters again and see the "hints" that allude to the future events in books 1-3. I'm now feeling the urge to re-read the series!
I almost gave this 4 stars because I was so let down at the "murderer reveal" - but after some thought, I can see how that was purposeful and added to our beloved Pip's inspiration.
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Random House for a copy of this e-ARC in exchange for my honest review!
This was a novella written as a prequel to her trilogy - The Good Girls Guide to Murder. This was about Pip and her friends who go to murder mystery party, where you are given clues and you role play a character by instruction.
Not only is Pip focusing on solving this game with her friends, but she is also re playing an infamous unsolved murder that occurred in her community, in her mind. I found myself engrossed in the characters and the plot and can't wait to continue reading, the trilogy! Thank you to Netgalley and Holly Jackson for giving me and arc of this novella.
