I needed more Pip in my life, I adore and missed her!!
This book is a prequel and a novella to the ‘Good Girls Guide to Murder’ series! Just as I was while reading those book, I was slightly spooked, but mostly intrigued by this plot. We meet some really important characters to the entire series in this novella, which I felt like set up the story very well. I wasn’t expecting the main plot to be completely unrelated to the other books. It’s a short story about what happens when Pip is invited a to a murder mystery party. Again, I adore Pip!! The way her brain works and her attention to detail is well fleshed in this book.
I don’t think you NEED to read this to understand the rest of the series, but if you need more Pip this was the perfect little dose of her. And the introduction to the title of the series, spot on!
Kill Joy by Holly Jackson is a prequel novella, perfect for fans of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series!
It’s such a fun novella with it revolving around a murder mystery party. This a perfect little love letter for A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder fans that aren’t quite ready to let this series go. It has several nods to the future books that are fun to deduce. There are clever tips of the hat that makes me continue to marvel at the author’s brilliant brain.
This reminded me why I love this series in the first place & I’m just constantly in awe of the authors ability to braid these complicated mysteries into fascinating stories.
I loved returning tk this series. It was a treat to experience everyone before AGGGTM & actually see the seed get planted into Pip’s head for her senior capstone project. The reader gets to watch idea grow roots & perfectly springboard Pip into becoming the relentless & determined detective she is.
Massive thanks to NetGalley & Random House Children’s for the free arc, which I voluntarily read & reviewed.
This was a nicely written novella that offered insight into how Pip decided on taking the Andie Bell murder case as her capstone project. I loved the little details placed in the writing that foreshadowed events from the other books (like the labeled knife block in the Reynolds's home). I missed not having a plot twist but it was still a nice read.
Kill Joy

Another book 📖 about Pip sign me up! Such a good short story/ novella of how Detective Pip started it definitely helped feed my pip obsession.
Kill joy is a prequel to A good girl guide to Murder. Doesn’t need to be read first I actually enjoyed it a lot since I already was familiar with the characters playing the game.
I need some friends so I can go to a murder mystery party because this seems fun! I’d probably be as obsessed in the game as Pip is!
Definitely give this a read if you miss Pip and her crazy obsessions! Helps show readers how Pips mind works! Thanks Holly for another great mystery story!
Thank you NetGalley for a great read!
This novella was fine, but nowhere near as interesting as the regular Good Girl’s Guide to Murder series. It’s been a while since I read the first book (and I haven’t read the other two yet) so I found this a bit confusing trying to remember both the characters’ names and their game names. This is mostly just a group of teenagers drinking playing a murder mystery game. I think only super serious fans of the series who just want more of the characters will appreciate this story. It just wasn’t for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House/Delacorte Press for providing me access to this eARC for my honest opinion!
This was a nice little novella which filled a Pip sized hole in my life. It was nice seeing this prequel but also a little sad, knowing what these kids were about to go through. OK NO MORE SPOILERS. I definitely recommend THE GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO MURDER series, but this lil prequel is not really required reading. I'd honestly recommend reading it last.
Thank you to Holly Jackson, Random House, and NetGalley for the chance to read Kill Joy.
I actually didn’t realize this was a novella to an already completed series when I started reading, so I was new to all of the characters and the story, but I still really enjoyed it! You don’t have to read any of the other books to understand what’s happening in Kill Joy.
Honestly, reading this novella first made me want to start reading the series it comes from even more and I think it’s going to be a good introduction to the series.
Overall the novella was a quick fun read about a group of friends completing a murder mystery dinner, but I still highly enjoyed it!
Kill Joy: a prequel to The Good Girls Guide to Murder series, a murder mystery game night with Pip and her friends.
This was a fun novella to read and had vibes like the game, Clue.
I enjoyed reading this short fast paced book so much. It was so fun to see what started Pip’s love for investigating. I love seeing pre-murder investigation for the senior project pip.
Kill Joy, a prequel to The Good Girls Guide to Murder series, takes us to the night Pip’s detecting spark is ignited. During a murder mystery game night with her friends, she finds herself getting more invested in the story and in the process of investigation. In the final scene, she passes Ravi Singh and thus the dominos fall into place for the lead up to the first book in the series. This was a light and fun night with Pip. It didn’t add anything to the series for me, but it didn’t detract from it either. By no means is it a necessary read to understand the series, but if you find yourself missing Pip, Kill Joy will certainly help you reunite.
I had an amazing time reading this novella and once I started I truly couldn't put it down until I finishee. I absolutely love watching how Pip's mind works and the vibe and plot of this book is amazing. I really recommend it for everyone who read A good girl's guide to murder
I had a very good time reading this book. And I can’t and won’t ever seem to get enough of Holly Jackson’s writing. This was a very engaging and thrilling read that had me hooked on to it till the very beginning and kept me on the edge till the very end!!
Who has always wanted to go to a murder mystery dinner? Or did you watch the movie Clue over and over! This one is a must read!
I have loved this series so when I saw there was a prequel novella, I knew it was a must read! We get to see Pip really start to come into her own and decide what she wants to do for her Capstone project. We also just get to see the friends hanging out and having fun!
This was a fun one! A little murder mystery dinner party with Pip’s friends. They mention the Andie and Sal case a couple times throughout the book which is a good set up for A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.
Loved this novella!! I was so captivated the whole time and definitely felt like I had to look behind me a few times to make sure there was no one there, haha. I've read A Good Girl's Guide to Murder and this is such a well-written prequel to set the scene for the first book in the series!
In this novella, Pippa is invited to a murder mystery dinner set in the 1920s with five of her closest friends. Although she didn't want to go at first (she wanted to pick a topic for her senior capstone project), Pippa quickly found herself becoming consumed with murder mystery!
This short novella follows Pip as she goes over Connor's house for a 1924 murder mystery dinner. My favorite thing about this story is that you truly get a look inside of Pip's mind and you are helpless but to follow all of the different paths her mind races down. Intriguing, beguiling and captivating right from the very beginning - this novella is the perfect introduction to the beginning of A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. The writing and storyline keep you guessing the entire time in this "Whodunit" thriller!
Try your hand at reading and see if you can come up with the answer!
I would also like to thank NetGalley and Holly Jackson for allowing me to read Kill Joy before publication in exchange for an honest review.
Super fun. Super quick.
There was even some suspense in such a short story that had my spine tingling.
In the prequel to “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” Pip Fitz- Imobi is invited to a 1920s themed Murder Mystery party at her friend’s house. We start to see the creative spark happen in Pip as she dissects the clues within this party.
I loved the way this was written. I loved the twists.
Pip still annoyed me by the end unfortunately. Overall, this is such a great prequel and would get anyone excite for the good girls guide to murder series!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Children’s, and Delacorte Press for this eARC in exchange for an honest review of this novella!
4.5 stars - I’m shocked how much I loved this novella. Reading it after the series made me slightly more familiar with the character that I already know and love. I could not stop smiling at the end getting to see Pip in her element. Loved the ending and the vibes from this book. Very simple concept but I would actually be afraid at times.
Would of liked to have a little more introduction to the characters to make sure I had everyone straight.
This was the perfect novella to dive into during a sick day. I loved the way it set up the future trilogy and introduced the main characters. The plot was fun but also allowed you to be dragged right into the center of the murder mystery party. Fast paced and suspenseful, this is a great short read!
Thank you NetGalley for gifting me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review and opinions.
This novella is a great introduction to Good Girls Guide to Murder! In the setting of a murder mystery dinner party the main character (as well as me) found herself invested in finding the killer. Throughout the book you work through the party with the characters. The very end is a great Segway into the next book! Well done.
