A HUGE thank you goes out to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio because holy moly! I am still REELING after finishing this book. 🤯 I had very high hopes going in because A Flicker in the Dark was a huge hit for me. Saying I was blown away is an understatement - Stacy Willingham really brought out her A-game with All the Dangerous Things!
There was never a single moment where I wasn’t completely hooked by this story. The scene laid out before us was so vivid and incredibly realistic; I could easily imagine this exact story on an episode of Dateline or coming to life through a true crime documentary. There’s really nothing I love more than an incredibly believable plot with characters you can envision perfectly. With that said - Isabelle really embodied all the things I want in a mystery/thriller main character: dramatic, slightly unhinged, questionably unreliable, but with just enough heart that you’re rooting for her, and I got to mention Karissa Vacker absolutely killed it with bringing Isabelle (and all the other characters) to life. Watching the past and present storylines play out from her eyes with all the craziness that came to light was such a trip and I really loved it! The twists in the story really did be twistin’ and while I figured one of them out, the rest were so mind blowing I wasn’t even mad (I don’t think I would’ve been mad anyway - it was a pretty obvious lead lol. 😂)
I want to say so many things but they’re way too direct and I don’t want to spoil so all I’m going to say is READ THIS DANG BOOK!! 🤩 A HUGE thank you goes out to @Netgalley and @macmillan.audio because holy moly! I will not give feedback on this book. I didn't know it was an audiobook. Since this has to be 100 characters I will say that when I read the write up I was intrigued.
A gripping story of a mother's search for her toddler son who was taken from his crib. As the one year anniversary of her son's disappearance approaches, Isabelle starts to realize that not all is what it seems with the people in her life, new and old, including herself. An entertaining read that kept me glued to the pages till the surprising end.
All the Dangerous Things by Stacy Willingham was good but It was quite introspective which is a tougher read for me to love. The plot was pretty darn good from start to finish but a very small cast of characters with the majority of the story involving only a few of them. Good narrator overall for all character voices but I would have preferred two (male and female).
Thank you to both Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity in exchange for an honest review.
I’m starting to get excited about the upcoming new year, meaning I’m starting to read advanced copies of some books that come out in January! I started All the Dangerous Things over the weekend, and I have been trying to find more time to read it ever since, even though the weekend and this week have been busy. Today was rainy and gross in the Northeast, and I wanted nothing more than to curl up with FT and finish this book. Alas, I went to work - but I finished the book as soon as I got home (with FT curled by snoring by my feet).
Written in first person, this thriller follows Isabelle, whose toddler son, Mason, disappeared in the middle of the night, one year prior. Isabelle has not been able to sleep since Mason’s disappearance, and she is consumed by figuring out what happened to him, refusing to imagine she won’t be reunited with him. The story switches between the current timeline and Isabelle’s childhood. I anticipated one twist, but there were others that I did not see coming at all!
I loved that the book is set in the Savannah/Beaufort area where my parents live - I could perfectly picture the locations in my mind. I read the first half and listened to the second half - Karissa Vacker does an excellent job with the narration, and I probably could have binge listened to the book in one day! One thing the audiobook is missing, however, is the great author’s note - this is definitely worth reading after finishing reading or listening, as it addresses some key content. Thank you to Macmillan Audio and Minotaur Books/St Martin's Press for NetGalley ALC and eARC copies in exchange for my honest opinion. I can’t wait for others to discover this - and if you haven’t read Willingham’s debut, A Flicker in the Dark, published earlier this year, you should check that out!
I was so excited to see this @netgalley ARC pop up for me, and then I realized it was an audio book. I have never really given audio books a fair shot. I get super distracted and I feel like it could be a great book but never holds my interest as much as a physical copy. THIS THOUGH, may have changed my mind. I was guessing until the very end! Lots of twists and turns, lots of emotion!
Not to mention, it takes place in my favorite city, Savannah
All the Dangerous Things was a terrific multi-layered mystery. The main character, Isabelle, grapples with the kidnapping of her son, the dissolution of her marriage, all while dealing with the guilt of a secret from her childhood. The guilt leads her to start questioning herself and what she is truly capable of. This book really kept me turning the pages. I would highly recommend this one and Stacy Willingham’s first book, A Flicker in the Dark.
I. Loved. This. Book!
Wow, Stacy Willingham, you are a literary genius! I was blown away by the writing, the plot, the twists, and the ending!
Summary: Isabel Drake is a mother whose son Mason was kidnapped from his own crib 1 year ago. Since then, she has made it her mission to search for him, keep his case alive by attending true crime conferences as a keynote speaker, and reporting details to the detective from the case. Her son's case has gone cold, she has not slept in 1 year, and her marriage fell apart. After the most recent true crime conference, Isabel is on her flight home when podcaster Waylon Spencer is her seat mate. He strikes up a conversation about teaming up for an episode. Isabel says no, but she arrived home to her estranged husband Ben who seems to be trying to force her to move on from Mason's case and decided that maybe Waylon was right, she needed to look at the case from a new angle. She calls him, and he's on the next flight to Savannah. The story is told in the past storyline from when Isabel was a child and her family suffered a devastating tragedy, as well as throughout the years when she first met Ben, and until Mason was kidnapped. The present storyline is told from Isabel's POV as she's searching for Mason and uncovering new leads with Waylon's help.
The storylines end up meshing together, and there are several plot twists that I did not see coming! In my opinion, it was the perfect amount of twists, there was not a time where I had to go back and figure out what a certain detail was coming from. It was an absolutely perfect thriller! I loved every second of it, and I'm so sad its over!
Thank you NetGalley, Minotaur & Stacy Willingham for this ARC!
This is an excellent read. I absolutely loved this book. It demonstrates how a mother’s love for their child is so great and unconditional that they will never give up on them. The book is about a couple’s young son who was taken from the home in the middle of the night. Immediately the parents are suspected of doing something terrible to their child. But there is no evidence. A year goes by and the police has no clues about the son’s whereabouts. However, the mother has bothered all the neighbors, appeared on tv, and attempted to do anything to find her missing child. The husband, the police and everyone else has given up but she spends all of her time trying to figure out what happened to her son. A mother’s love for her child is everlasting and nothing will destroy that bond.
Very underwhelmed with this one. It was slow and frustrating. I thought the book was leading somewhere and then it took an abrupt turn which should have been exciting except I just found myself annoyed that the whole middle of the book seemed like a waste of time. What was the point of her sleepwalking??! It was definitely not the page turning thriller I was hoping for, more of an introspective domestic mystery, Kind of interesting but too slow moving to keep my attention.
Another smash hit from Stacy Willingham! I absolutely loved A Flicker in the Dark and was so looking forward to this one, as well. The audio and narration was stellar. The story was full of twists and turns and had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happened! Definitely became and auto read author! Many, many thanks to NetGalley for the arc, loved it!
I went into this audiobook blind and it did not disappoint. The story is so captivating and really sucks you in from the beginning. A mother who is trying to find her infant son who was kidnapped from his nursey a year ago. Just when you think the twist is how the story is going to end, BAMM, another twist. I thought I saw the end coming but I honestly didn't, and it made the ending so much better! The narrator, Karissa Vacker, does a wonderful job being all the voices (male and female) and that also kept my mind inside the story.
Thank you to Amber Cortes at Macmillan for sending me this widget!
I was so very excited to read her follow up novel. I loved her first novel a Flicker in the Dark. I’m so pleasantly happy to say I loved her second book even more! This was an incredible novel from beginning to end. The writing style and the characters are so relateable and well developed. This was an amazing mystery thriller! The ending gave me chills! I highly recommend.
If you love amnesia tropes, unreliable narrators, and twisty thrillers you'll love this new one from Stacy Willingham.
Definitely a slow burn, we follow the story of Isabelle Drake who is searching for her baby son, Mason who was abducted in the night and missing for a year now. Her husband, Ben, is resigned that their son won't be coming back and has moved on while Isabelle has become slightly unhinged. Traveling the states and going to True-Crime events to share her story, she's hoping to get a lead on a suspect as her sons disappearance turns into a Cold Case.
At the most recent speaking event she meets a podcaster, who offers his assistance. While they look into the time leading up to the abduction, Isabelle dredges up memories of her childhood and wonders if there are connections between the past and present that she's unaware of. Is there a new suspect.. that suspect being herself?
This one had me guessing all the way to the end and the final twist and resolution were perfectly executed. I was right along with Isabelle trying to figure out connections between the supporting characters, questioning her sanity, and feeling how frantic she was for answers.
Stacy Willingham is an auto-buy author for me and She's knocked it out of the park again, a great second novel after her BOTM Book of The Year nominee 'A Flicker in The Dark'.
This was an amazing book so cleverly laid out, I finished it in a day!!
I enjoyed the way the timelines wove into one another and would absolutely recommend this to everyone!!
The narration was excellent as well!
5 stars
All the Dangerous things is definitely different than A Flicker in the Dark. For one thing, it really harps on the excessive insomnia & unreliable FMC tropes. I’ll admit it’s starting to get a little old. I didn’t enjoy this one as much as A Flicker in the Dark but I think a person who didn’t like that one, may enjoy this one more.
Overall, the twist was pretty decent and far more subtle which I appreciated. It’s definitely worth reading & I really enjoyed the audio.
I was wary going into this book based on the subject matter, as I have a young toddler myself. This story is about a child taken in the middle of the night and has yet to be found, which we can all understand is every mother's worst nightmare. Knowing this going into the book, I wasn't prepared to love this one. But I really loved it!
This pyschological thriller is SO bingeable and sucked me in from the beginning. Isabelle Drake is a mother suffering from insomnia after her son was kidnapped from his room in the middle of the night. Isabelle has started to doubt herself as she struggles with her lack of sleep and desperately works her own investigation to find out what happened to her son. I love an unreliable narrator when it's done well, and this one is done SO well!
I thought I had this book figured out several times, but I was wrong everytime. I love it when a thriller can surprise me, especially when it's not completely out of left field. This story is told with flashbacks into Isabelle's childhood, plus flashbacks to her time leading up to her son's disappearance. With both of those and the present timeline, I thought it would be hard to keep track of. But it all transitions nicely, and everything comes together in the end.
Karissa Vacker is one of my favorite narrators, and I think she was a great choice for this book. The chapters from Isabelle's childhood were done so well, with the slight childlike changes made to her voice. Plus her regular narration and distinct voices were all A+ to me.
I read A Flicker in the Dark and while it was a solid debut that I enjoyed, I didn't love it like I did this book. This book was on my radar, but not necessarily a super anticipated must-read for me. But now I can tell you any books Stacy Willingham writes will be an auto-buy!
A lot of main character's inner monolgue really stuck with me and pulled at my heartstrings as a mother, so I was surprised to learn that Stacy Willingham isn't actually a mother herself. She does a great job at conveying the complicated feelings of motherhood including guilt, societal expectations, and the utter devastation I imagine any parent would feel in the main character's shoes. I'm very impressed she was able to pull this off so well! She talks about this in the Author's Note, and I really give her kudos for taking the time to research this and do it justice.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review!
It’s been almost a year to the day since Isabelle’s son vanished from his crib. Told in two timelines: The present and the past when Isabelle was just a child herself.
I read this book in 48 hours. I loved the red herrings and can't wait to read more from this author.
I read that there was an authors note at the end but that was not included in this audio version.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press
I was fearful once I received this audio book to review as an arc once I realized I had dnf'd author Stacy Willingham's first book, A Flicker in the Dark. This book, however, was a pleasant surprise and kept me listening for a full day just to find out the ending.
This was a well done thriller/mystery/psychological drama about parents with a missing child, an infant taken from his crib. One year later, with about that long of insomnia and exhaustion, mom Isabelle has split with her husband, attends true crime conventions to keep her son's story in the press, is befriended by a true crime podcaster, and also has to come to terms with the loss of a sibling decades earlier. There is a ton going on and a lot to keep track of, but the audio book had an excellent narrator, the story was intriguing and I absolutely did not guess the ending. Well done.
My one personal cringe part of the book was the description of true crime groupies and their obsession with other people's anguish. Yikes. As a Dateline, and Keith Morrison fangirl, that hit a little too close to home.
All The Dangerous Things was such an incredible psychological thriller that’s twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end!!
Isabelle Drake is a mother and a wife, and one year ago her two year old son went missing from their locked house in the middle of the night. The case has gone cold, but Isabelle hasn’t given up hope. She hasn’t been able to sleep a single night since Mason’s disappearance, and in an effort to find out anything she can she attends and speaks at true crime cons and agrees to a true crime podcast.
Through both the podcast and diving deeper into her chilling past, Isabella learns a little more about what might have happened to Mason, and the outcome is nothing like you'd expect.
This book has such a twisted plot that intertwined so well together. I listened as an audiobook and the narration was top notch and extremely engaging. The perspective changes between then and now made for such an interesting plot. You really understood these characters and everything they were doing… but not until the very end. I had so many hunches and guesses throughout this book and not a single one was right! If you love psychological thrillers, this is a must read this new year!
Thanks to Netgalley and MacMillian Audio for an advanced copy of this audiobook!
