AMAZING! I have officially read all of Megan Goldin’s books and none of them have disappointed! Dark Corners is the second book following Rachel Krall and truthfully I really enjoyed “The Night Swim” but this one blew it out of the water for me. It was such a fun read with great pace and makes you feel like you’re a detective working with Rachel to solve the case. Loved it!!! 5⭐️
A huge thank you to the publisher for providing me with an advanced reader’s copy of this title via NetGalley.
Just wonderful, one of my favorite thrillers in recent memory. Not only a great plot, but fantastic characters too. I'll be immediately reading more from this author.
I am not finished this book yet but I had to come on here and say, If you are thinking about reading it just do it! It hooks you right away! I can tell I’m going to enjoy it! The detail in her writing is so great.
Will update and edit when finished
This is the second book in the Rachel Krall series, but you don’t need to have read the first in order to get what’s going on in the second. I’d recommend you did read the first one though, because it’s very good. This second installment was a bit slow in the beginning for me, but it picked up at the halfway point. I feel like the story didn’t quite live up to its potential, the vibes were off from the first book with Rachel. I loved her in the first one, but I felt a little bored with her in this one. Maybe I shouldn’t be comparing the two, but it just didn’t quite thrill me like I hoped.
Dark Corners is a fantastic thriller by Megan Goldin. Ms. Goldin never ceases to impress me with her twisted tales. This well-written book is populated with a large group of suspicious type characters that will keep you guessing till the end. Rachel Krall makes podcasts about criminal cases and has presented new evidence to authorities to change the outcome of trials. Joe Martinez is an FBI agent that requests Rachel's help in a Florida serial killer case. Joe and Rachel work together to solve the cases but Joe worries that the killer has fixated on Rachel. Their story is full of drama, humor, sizzle, twists and turns, and has a high creep factor. This book had me riding the edge of my seat and I can't wait to read Megan Goldin's next book. Dark Corners is book 2 of the Rachel Krall Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliffhanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
For starters I'm seeing that Rachel Krall made her debut in The Night Swim, which I have not read, but I don't see how not reading impacts Dark Corners.
This was my second Megan Goldin read, the first being Stay Awake, and it did not disappoint! It was so fast paced and I was hooked from the very beginning. I liked the characters and the plot, although I feel some of it was easy to figure out. The big twist at the end came as a surprise and I was glad to see that everything essentially had closure. Overall a great read and I would recommend it to other people.
Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin's Press and Megan Goldin for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Look for Dark Corners in store August 8th, 2023!
I really wanted another Rachel book after Night Swim, but must admit I was disappointed with Dark Corners.. Goldin continues her story, but lacks the enthusiasm and exciting story in Night Swim. I found the story did not pull me in quite like #1. All in all it was a good read and earned a solid 3 stars, just not the follow up I was hoping for.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Shocking! Magnificently written! Thrilling beyond measure!
Dark Corners is a hip, new, trending thriller, that places social media influencers at the center of some criminal action.
Women are being found dead. A stinky guy is running around town. A farmers life is ripe for the picking.
What the heck is going on around here?
Readers are led to Terence Bailey serving prison time for breaking and entering but may have killed six women to date. He's set to be released soon. A serial killer?
It appears that Madison Logan decides to pay a visit to Bailey.
Has she lost her darn mind? A person facing suspected murder and she wants to talk, perhaps she needs a social media detox as a powerful influencer with a loyal following.
Or, she needs help as she's about to be kidnapped & Rachel Krall must now attempt to find her.
What if Rachel is too late and Madison is already dead?
As this plot thickens we're introduced to another guy who has a medical condition -Trimethylaminuria-causing a rotten stench from his own body.
This fella named Thomas Mccoy isn't very popular among the ladies nor his own family because of his condition. He's a farmer by trade but also we uncover another side job that keeps him near women in public.
Dark Corners is meant to be dark! Readers aren't disappointed in the non-stop action and suspense with more murders to be solved.
In fact, there's more than 10 all together and someone is busy digging? Digging a trench on a farm?
Nah, this seems more like graves!!!
You don't want to miss this one!
Thank you to Megan Goldin, St. Martin's Press, Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for this honest review.
Megan Goldin does it again with this action packed murder mystery.
This book follows the famous podcaster of “guilty or not guilty” Rachel Krall who’s name comes up on a FBI investigation regarding missing influencer Maddison Logan (@justmaddie).
FBI agent Joseph “Joe” Martinez is desperate for a break in the case and flys Rachel into Florida to question her and get her to speak with a prisoner of the central Florida correctional facility, Terrence Bailey. Bailey is in prison on a break and entry charge but is suspected of being a serial killer and is the last person to speak with Maddison Logan.
Rachel is asked to leave and go home multiple times by the FBI when her talk with Bailey seemingly brings them no closer to answers. However Rachel is unwilling to leave without solving the case. Which brings her to joining a influencer event called BuzzCon to get more information on Maddison, putting herself closer to harms way.
I don’t want to give away the whole story but just know that murder, mystery, accusations, and a huge plot twist you never saw coming is awaiting you.
This novel for me was slow at the beginning and around chapter 15 I was ready to put it down and quit. However I pushed though and I’m so glad I did.
I would 100% recommend this book because once I got past chapter 15 I COULD NOT put this book down and finished it in one sitting ( legit your girls eyes are bloodshot and it’s currently 7am- I’ve been reading all night). All I can say is Megan Goldin just got a new fan!
I could tell right off the bat I was gonna dig this book. I didn’t initially realize Dark Corners has Rachel Krall in it from The Night Swim but it was a nice surprise! That was my first (and favorite!!) book by Goldin & what got me to binge read all her previous books. Technically this book is a part 2 because it stems off of The Night Swim but imo it’s a standalone. BUT if you haven’t read TNS read it, you won’t be disappointed!!🖤
Goldin, again, did what she does best. The story got off to a great start of getting right into the thick of it (not a slow burn or making you wait for excitement!), which isn’t a must but when the author can hook you immediately…well why not & yes please 😜 While the influencer storyline wasn’t and isn’t my favorite in any book overall I thought the plot was excellent & creative. The mention of the influencers (what they’re eating/doing/photographing) in the book got a bit redundant & I feel like could’ve been less detailed or shorter mentions & not taken anything away from the story itself. Other than that no complaints. The suspense pretty much started in the first chapter & was consistent the entire book as far as keeping the reader’s attention & wondering where things are headed. The character development was on point (cough cough Martinez ha). I feel like Goldin did a great job of having each character be so different & they just played their part in the story perfectly. Rachel’s character was obviously my favorite. I could see her being in more of her books down the road & it would not hurt my feelings. I like how’s she’s a podcaster but has the intuition of a great detective or something. And she’s a strong character she’s not dumb or weak (I can’t with the dumb female leads haha). I just think that Goldin does a great job at making each character very real for the reader & unique to their role. Fantastic writing & very descriptive of everything (but not over the top). Great job on tying it all together I didn’t expect any of it really. I had my thoughts on some stuff but there’s no way I could’ve guessed all the twists & how everything and everyone came together. Great book, I definitely recommend this one especially if like me you’re a fan of Megan Goldin🖤
4-1/2 ⭐️ rounded down.
Thanks so much to NetGalley & the publisher St Martin’s Press for providing me with an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review, so appreciative!!
I finished my review of Megan Goldin’s book “The Night Swim” by saying I hoped there would be more Rachel Krall novels in the future.
Picture my shriek when I opened an email inviting me to read an advance copy of Dark Corners - a new Rachel Krall book!! * insert jumps of giddy joy here *
Rachel is a well known true crime podcaster. We jump into this novel and are given the knowledge she’s done quite well as a podcast host since the last book. The FBI have called in Rachel to meet with a convicted felon in hopes she can find out information with regards to the disappearance of a famous Instagram influencer Maddison Logan.
After meeting with said felon, Terrance, she is told by the FBI “go home” as she was unable to help gain info. Rachel, of course, does not go home and starts investigating Maddison’s disappearance herself. She goes undercover to attend BuzzCon - the convention to be for all social media influencers.
The beginning of the book started off a little slow but it was still attention grabbing. Half way through, however, things picked up and I was fully invested and couldn’t put it down.
While the writing of the book has a different vibe from The Night Swim, it was still very well written. This book could be read as a stand alone but I would recommend reading The Night Swim first to get the full character development of Rachel.
Would I read a Rachel Krall Book #3?! Heck, yes! I hope there are more Rachel adventures in the future. Do not leave us hanging about potential future “opportunities “ in the making *wink* 😉
Thank you to St. Martins Publishing Group & NetGalley for the opportunity to advance read this great book!! 🧡
I’ve realized I’m not a GIANT fan of books about influencers but this was a great mystery that I would definitely recommend.
while “night swim” was a deep look into how the law treats victims of sexual assault, this novel felt like it was not nearly as deep nor meaningful. the influencer clan were terribly annoying and felt like caricatures rather than actual people. yes, some influencers lack depth and only care about money, but come on. i understand that goldin wanted to move away from the court scenes and the podcasts, but this feels like a far cry from the first book.
it is a quick and easy read, a bit more suspenseful than the first. i just wish goldin prioritized characterization for rachel; i still feel that she is bland and could be anybody.
thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review!
After finishing The Night Swim a few years back, my immediate impression was OMG followed by the thought that I needed to read more of Rachel Krall.
Megan Goldin, thank you! I was so excited to see that Rachel would be back in Dark Corners and even more thrilled to receive an advanced copy.
While this one wasn’t as much of a gut punch as The Night Swim, it’s fast-paced, thrilling and kept me guessing right to the last page.
I absolutely loved this one. It’s an easy five-star recommendation for me. Add it to your TBR for sure.
My thanks to @stmartinspress and @netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book before its publication date.
Normally sequels can’t compare to the original, but I actually liked this one better than the first. Yes there was less podcast interviewing, but it was just as suspenseful. I enjoy being surprised by endings, and this one didn’t let me down. Thanks to Netgalley for the free copy in return for an unbiased review.
Hallelujah, not one single courtroom scene! 🙌🏼
I was nervous about starting this one as I wasn’t a fan of The Night Swim (Book 1). I was hesitant to pick this up thinking it was going to be another book where 90% of it takes place in a courtroom. I get that a lot of people like those books, but I realllllly have to be in the mood for one of those. I liked this one more than the first and am happy I read it!! ☺️
This can be read as a stand-alone as references to the first book are usually briefly explained.
This book was very very similar to Carol Wyer’s A Life for a Life. I rated that one about the same as this one which isn’t too shabby! So if you read and enjoyed that book you will probably enjoy this one too.
Although I mostly enjoyed it, my biggest criticism would be the unnecessary length as I felt there was a ton of filler as well as predictability. A few of the ‘twists’ weren’t twists at all to me since I spotted them a mile away and I feel most readers probably would too.
Overall, fun and entertaining enough read.
A big thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary advanced copy of this book. This book will be available on August 8th, 2023! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
3.5 ⭐️ rounding up!
Run, and I'm talking knees to chest sprint, don't walk...
This book was so well written. Not only was I hooked just from the cover, the title and the author, but most importantly because it was another Rachel Krall story.
Similar to the first book, Night Swim, that debuted Rachel Krall, a podcaster that talks all things true crime, this one followed Rachel's break down of serial abductions of girls throughout a span of well over 6 years. In Dark Corners, it was narrated in real time from multiple view points. Viewpoints ranging from Rachel's, the FBI detective, Joe, that she was working in tandem with, along with multiple suspects.
While desperately trying to solve a missing persons case, Rachel and Joe were also unearthing cold cases that were just bound to be connected to one another. Because, duh.
Without saying too much, just know that this book will surprise you in more ways than one.
If you have access to any sort of platform to get books/audiobooks prior to their release date, I highly suggest you do so for this one. You will not be disappointed.
If you don't, I suggest reading Night Swim by Megan Goldin to hold ya over until August 8, 2023 while preordering Dark Corners, stat.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a free e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved this book! The Night Swim was a 5 star read for me, so I was pretty confident I would also love this, and I was correct. I absolutely adore Rachel’s character, she’s a strong and independent female character, and I love following her journey. I really enjoyed the mystery in this book, I had to keep reading to find out where things were going. I did not predict the twists at all, and was engrossed in the mystery the whole time. I highly recommend this one!
Goldin’s previous book THE NIGHT SWIM was a 5 star read for me, so when I saw that she wrote another thriller related to Rachel Krall’s podcast, I was excited to pick it up. When a social media star goes missing, the FBI calls Rachel for help. The premise of this book drew me in, and I really enjoyed how the influencer/social media aspects were woven into the story.
All in all, this was an engaging and exciting four star thriller from Goldin. This book has an expected publication date of August 8, 2023, and I recommend giving it a read! Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
