Fun and fun of twists! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review.
Goldin has become and autobuy author for me and continues to stay that way with this new release. I honestly did not know this was connected to the night swim and you don’t really need to read that one before hand but it’s still a cool connection. We once again have podcaster Rachel krall on the scene of a new crime. For fans of serial killers and the influencer lifestyle this one is for you. It was more of a slow burn than her other novels but I was still hooked from page one. There was a bit too much of repetition throughout the book and the podcast chapters didn’t seem to totally align with the proper tense and never really wrapped either, but overall I really enjoyed this one and highly recommend
Great storyline; flowed nicely. Suspenseful. Loved the idea of a podcaster being involved in the story. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys this genre
I received a digital ARC from St. Martin's Press to read and review this book and I'm glad I did. I finished it within 24 hours and couldn't stop reading. As different details came into play, my guesses on the ending changed several times, but in the end I didn't figure everything out. Great book and I recommend it to anyone who likes thrillers.
Within the first few pages of Megan Goldin's newest thriller, "Dark Corners," we are introduced to Rachel Krall, a true crime podcaster. Rachel is summoned to a maximum security prison located in Central Florida by the FBI. Upon arrival, Rachel learns that the FBI exploited her curious nature into manipulating her to come to Florida. She was told she was "being given a front-row seat to an active FBI investigation." Once there she learns that her name actually came up in the investigation by Terence Bailey, a prisoner at that facility.
Terence Bailey has been incarcerated for six years. He was convicted of robbery but he was also accused of the abductions and murders of several young women, although he was never convicted. Two days prior, he was visited by a famous influencer, Maddison Logan. She was the first and only visitor Terence Bailey has had in six years. During their meeting, the FBI had learned that Terence Bailey had scribbled out a message to Maddison asking her to bring Rachel Krall to him.
After the meeting, the FBI believe that Madisson disappeared from her camper van parked in a nearby camping area. The FBI are unable to build a victim profile on Madisson because they have no information on her actual identity. Since Rachel's name was brought up in the meeting between Madisson and Terence, the FBI feel that Rachel is their only lead to finding Maddison. Compounded with this is the fact Terence Bailey's sentence ends in two days and the FBI believe he might be working with an accomplice on the outside.
Rachel is intrigued by the case and finds herself in the middle of a missing person's investigation. When a woman's body is found a few miles away from the camping grounds entrenched in a muddy pit, everyone believes it's Maddison. While the forensic team works to free and identify the body, Rachel works to uncover clues involving her disappearance. Her investigation ultimately leads to the other missing girls and whether Terence Bailey was responsible for their demise.
As with all Of Megan Goldin's other books, this is another terrific addition to her already impressive lineup of fast-paced thrillers. Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Megan Goldin brings back Rachel Krall, the famous true crime podcaster, who debuted in The Night Swim. She is back, but this time, she did not pick the crime she chases down - it essentially picks her. The FBI ask her to fly down to Florida to help them with a case. At first, it seems like she is a person of interest, but then it becomes more clear. Once they get what they need from her, the lead investigator (also a handsome man per Rachel) tries to get her to go home. He begins to feel like bringing her into the mix might put her in danger. Rachel, however, is not one to be told what to do, and once she starts something she sees it through to the end, or she will die trying. I would say more, but I don't want to give out any spoilers!
Just like when I read The Night Swim, this book grabbed my attention right away, and I raced through the book, as I absolutely needed to know what happened. I love the character of Rachel, a non-nonsense strong woman who does what she thinks needs to be done, without letting anyone or anything get in the way of her goal. Goldin created other great characters in this book. Joe, the detective, was a bit hard to read, and I liked that she kept the reader guessing about him. The influencers in the book, for the most part, were people you loved to hate, and created another level of intrigue with a side story of their own. I would change the way Goldin has Rachel's podcast going throughout the book, as it created a spoiler, that this writer didn't need to figure out in advance. But, other than that, another amazing book. Cannot wait for the next installment involving Rachel Krall.
nobody alive does a thriller like megan goldin. she just writes hit after hit after hit. i loved being able to revisit rachel krall after how great and compelling she was in the night swim.
Competently written, but overall a slightly lesser entry comparing to The Night Swim , while I wasn't as blown away as everyone else by its predecessor, I still found it to be an engaging read, and was definitely excited for more case cracking with the podcast host / amateur sleuth Rachel Krall. Dark Corners's final act is a worthwhile one—managing to close all loose ends with a decent amounts of surprise, even though the journey getting there is a little sluggish and dull.
It is a missed opportunity not giving Rachel Krall more room to develop as a dimensional character—one thing I was looking forward to was to gain further knowledge on the returning characters from The Night Swim . But upon finishing Dark Corners, I couldn't help but speculate this novel might have started out as a stand-alone, only receiving a superficial 'Rachel Krall overlay' late in development to benefit from the success and brand recognition of The Night Swim . Rachel Krall has absolutely no personality here, merely functions as a sounding board for other characters to dump intel at. Not to mention her 'sidekick' Pete is also barely in the story. There's an arguably unnecessary romance thrown in to fabricate some character development for Miss Krall, but it might be too little too late.
Fortunately the mystery at hand is still engaging and layered, unfolding at lightning pace thanks to the short chapters. I do however, feel like I have to suspend my disbelief WAY more this time around, trying not to get caught up on the convenience the narrative is taking. One aspect of the case heavily involves social media / influencer culture, and there are moments where its depiction is stereotypical and slightly dated (like mid 2010s), evidently written by someone who's clearly not currently interacting on these platforms.
Judging on its own, Dark Corners is still an decent thriller/mystery, but with the The Night Swim branding comes expectations, and for me those expectations are not fully met: the returning characters are mostly in name only and irrelevant, and the case presented here is sillier and more bombastic, replacing the grounded, character-driven tone of the first book. I do want a book 3, and hopefully one that's more fleshed out and intentional than this entry.
I didn’t expect to love this book as much as I did. The twists and turns throughout were pretty genius and kept me wanting more. I am looking forward to another Rachael Krall book!
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I have mixed feelings about this book. I absolutely love Megan Goldin's writing (and that still has not changed) and really really loved The Night Swim, the first Rachel Krall book.
However, this story left me wanting a lot more. I've come to expect brilliant plot twists in Goldin's books and so as I was reading this story I kept playing out all these crazy scenarios in my head on how I thought the book would end and how I thought everything would tie together. Except... none of that happened. There basically wasn't a twist at all, just a small "reveal" which wasn't that shocking and didn't really tie in to the current murders being investigated.
The build up of the story was great. There are a lot of different aspects to the story and I expected everything to connect at the end, but it never did. I think that's what was most disappointing about this story. The end felt rushed and thrown together. I think this story would be great if things played out differently at the end.
Overall though, it was an entertaining book and a quick read. And, as a side note, I did love that Rachel was given a love interest in this story and am looking forward to seeing that play out more in future books. While this one wasn't my favorite, I will definitely still read anything Megan Goldin publishes in the future!
Rachel Krall is back in Megan Goldin's latest book! Goldin is an auto-buy author for me. The Night Swim and Stay Awake were solid 4⭐️ reads, so thank you, Netgalley, and St. Martin's Press for the ARC!

All the makings for a binge worthy read! Unfortunately, this book didn't carry the same page turning frenzy as the other books I've read by Goldin.
I love a good murder mystery, but I'm not usually a fan of bringing romance into the mix. It tends to cheapen the story for me.
I still love Rachel's character, but the other characters in this book had me just feeling 🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️.
The ending also tried to tie up way too many things, IMO.
Goldin will still remain an auto-buy author for me, and I can't wait to see what is next for Rachel Krall! This just wasn't my favorite.
A podcaster gets roped into an FBI investigation where she fakes being an influencer to get info from other influencers about those in the influencer community. Overall, all fun and zippy read that pays off with a satisfying ending.
Also, don't worry if you haven't read the first book in this series. I only noticed that it was part of a series while looking it up to write this review. Even though I've read the first book, I didn't connect the two and it didn't take anything away from enjoying this book.
Rachel Krall the true crime podcaster from Megan Goldin's novel The Night Swim is back. The FBI has brought her to Florida to help with a case involving prisoner Terence Bailey. He is in prison for breaking and entering, but believed to be involved in the murders of sex workers and will be released in 48 hours because there is not enough evidence to convict him. Maddison Logan, a young social media influencer with many followers, disappears shortly after visiting Terence in prison. Before disappearing Maddison leaves a message on Rachel's voice mail asking for her help. Rachel works with FBI agent Martinez and gets involved in the world of social media influencers to try to solve this case. I loved the pacing, short chapters, side characters, and twists in this thriller/mystery. The look inside the world of social media influencers was interesting too. I would love to see more of Rachel Krall in future novels by Megan Goldin.
Thank you to Netgalley, Author Megan Goldin, and St.Martin's Press for this advanced copy to read and review.
3.5 rounded up to 4⭐️
Rachel Krall is a famous reporter/podcaster that investigates murder trials. She finds herself helping the FBI with Terrance Bailey’s murder case, as he’s set to be released from prison.
I went into this story blind, and so I want to keep my intro to the story short and sweet as I preferred to not know many details prior to reading it!
The very start of this story is STRONG and really sucks you in. It loses a bit of momentum after the initial start, and then it picks up again. I finished the last 70% of the book in one day because the pace really picked up.
I loved the short chapters and I loved the various points of view. Typically I don’t enjoy books that have non-police figures trying to investigate a murder. But somehow this story didn’t bother me. Rachel appears to actually have experience and works WITH the FBI rather than on her own thinking she’s smarter than them.
The beginning of the story is a bit confusing with the various background stories/ different characters, but hold tight because it will all come together and make sense.
Overall, I enjoyed it!
Thank you NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a fantastic follow up to The Night Swim. I love the way Megan Goldin draws you in immediately with her suspense and fast-paced writing. Dark Corners is a fun, engrossing thriller that you will not want to put down. I devoured this book and it kept me guessing all the way. The mixing of the current story and the future podcast was a nice way to break up the story while also giving clues to the end. I also enjoyed that no story line was left hanging (there were a couple side stories throughout the novel). Overall, Dark Corners is another excellent Megan Goldin page-turner. Thank you to St. Martin's Press for the advanced readers copy. It truly was a treat!
Dark Corners by Megan Goldin is the second book in the Rachel Krall series. It has less of the podcast in this story but just as much excitement. Rachel is brought into an FBI investigation of a missing influencer. The missing influencer is somehow linked to a possible serial killer. Rachel heads to Buzzcon to try to figure out the connection.
Dark Corners is a fast paced thriller. It has numerous twists and revelations throughout the book. It keeps you on your toes as you wonder who is involved and why. It also throws in a little humor and romance.
I really enjoyed this second installment. I hope Megan Goldin writes additional books about Rachel Krall and her investigations.
Thanks to Netgalley and St Martin's Press for the advanced copy of the book. The opinions are my own.
Another page-turner from Megan Goldin! Dark Corners was a really great read with well-developed characters and a murder mystery that kept you guessing right up until the very end.
The influencer plot line brought an interesting type of drama and made this story feel very fresh and current. I would have liked a little more depth on the antagonist because I just know they had a very tormented upbringing given where they ended up.
All in all - Dark Corners was an engrossing and entertaining read that I will definitely be recommending.
Megan Goldin is a gifted thriller writer and this book did not disappoint. One doesn’t have to have read the other Rachel Krall mystery to enjoy and understand this one. I couldn’t stop thinking about this story and had to keep reminding myself it was fiction and not a real crime story I was following in the news. Set in the world of social media influencers it’s a story that will find mass appeal. An A+ crime thriller.
That said I didn’t enjoy the attempt at a romantic storyline and think the book would’ve been best without that included. It was cheesy and didn’t feel natural or like jt went with the overall tone of the book.
I devoured Night Swim, the first in this series, and Dark Corners was a worthy follow-up. Rachel Kroll is a true crime podcaster who finds herself in the middle of the case of a missing woman and a convention of influencers. I love that Rachel does what she wants and follows her own insticts--which mostly works out quite well. There are enough twists and red herrings here to keep the reader guessing until the moment of reveal.
Another great book from Megan Goldin! A little predictable, but still thrilling and I loved how things tied up in the end.
I like that we get to follow multiple points of view in the story. I hope there’s another story with Rachel in the future!
Thank you Megan Goldin and St Martins Press for the ARC copy of this book!
