I was excited at the prospect of being able to read more of Rachels story in this book but it was too much overkill for me.
A popular influencer (Maddison Logan) visits and inmate who is a suspected serial killer days before he is set to be released and then disappears. For reasons unknown, Rachel's name comes up during the visit so the FBI is hopeful that she will be willing to help them get to the bottom of things and find out where Maddison may be.
Could there be an accomplice helping the suspected killer act on the outside? The premise sounded so good but unfortunately this book just fell a little flat for me.
I really enjoyed this one! I loved The Night Swim by this other, but wasn't as big of fan of Stay Awake or The Escape Room. I think what draws me in is Rachel Krall as a main character and the podcast element. I will gladly read any future Rachel Krall series books!
I have to admit as a small time influencer myself, this book was super fun to read. Reading about how on the surface influencers appear one way but the undercurrent of their lives and how dark things could be in order to get ahead was completely eye opening. I really enjoyed alot of this book was disappointed that her podcast was not featured in this book 2. I still enjoy Megan's writing and how she's excellent and writing a great intriguing thriller that will make you keep turning the pages for more.
Podcasts AND influencers? Sign me up! This was a great follow-up to The Night Swim and I'm a sucker for an undercover story. I loved that there was no courtroom drama in this one, but wasn't as big a fan of the single POV approach. I love the integration with social media, since that's so pervasive in culture. Overall, it was a gripping thriller for fans of the genre.
Expected publication date: August 8, 2023.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC!
Once again I stayed up way too late to finish a thriller but I couldn’t put this one down!!!! I absolutely eat up mystery/thriller books where we follow the same main character throughout a series. Typically that is a detective, but Rachel (who you meet in the first book The Night Swim) is a true crime podcaster, which makes it so much more fun.
I sort of guessed the plot twist but I wasn’t let down by this. I think the author writes in a way where she purposely gives you all the information slowly so that you figure out the mystery along with the main character. I thought the way it all played out was excellent with a wonderful final climatic scene.
The book also had a touch of romance which I loved. It was not necessarily a major plot point but the way the book ends the author leaves you with the feeling that we might see more of the love interest in future books (I hope!).
I can’t wait for the next book.Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I quite enjoyed another book with Rachel in it. I hope this becomes a full fledged series. This book kept me engaged and eager to see what would happen next. I really liked the podcast element and the way it was done. I cannot wait to read the next Megan Goldin book!
As a huge fan of the night swim I was so excited for this book! The writing was fantastic and I loved the story line. It was unpredictable and had a great twist!
Thank you so much to Net Galley, the publisher, and author for providing this book for my honest review. This is my 3rd book by this author and I have loved all of them. This is the second book featuring the main character, Rachel. The first book, The Night Swim, introduces the reader to Rachel who has a true crime podcast. I highly recommend starting with The Night Swim. If you loved that one then you will also love this book. I actually loved this one even more! Rachel is investigating another case and this book has just as many interesting and shocking twists as the first one. It’s also told with multiple narrators which I really enjoyed. There is a touch of romance in this thriller and I know some might not prefer that, but I loved having that touch in the book. I can’t wait to read more from this author. Thank you again for providing this book for my honest review. I adored it!
Rachel is back and this case is complex and very relatable. Influencers are being targeted and the author gives you a glimpse into a world that isn't always as it seems. This one kept me guessing with several surprise twists. Also, by the end, I loved Joe. This one took me away from reality and I couldn't put it down. I had to know the answers!
I loved the first book by Megan Goldin, so I had high hopes for this one. It was fast-paced, which I loved, and kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn’t love this one as much as the first one. Though the story was super interesting, I thought there was a little too much romance in this one and less thriller.
I loved the chapters that were the point of view of the killer, as that is rare in books like this. I really enjoyed the alternating narrators and didn’t find it confusing.
Would have loved more twists .
Overall, solid book and I look forward to more by Megan goldin!
Surprisingly I liked Dark Corners more than I liked The Night Swim. That being said, it wasn't my favorite. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of the novel, but I found it difficult to follow. Multiple narrators, and super repetitive. There were so many characters to keep up with, I didn't get to really enjoy the "podcast Rachel Krall" from The Night Swim.
There were some minor flaws in the book as well that would have been a huge no, no IRL: the relationship between Rachel and FBI Agent Martinez for one. Also... you can't get a fingerprint off of an envelope, etc. Small things that stood out to me that bothered me more than it should have.
Nonetheless, the story itself was good. I read Dark Corners in 24 hours. I was glad to not read any courtroom scenes, but reading about snobby influencers wasn't all that great either.
Thank you Megan Goldin, St. Martin's Press, & NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Worth the read. 3 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the eArc. I enjoyed Goldin’s previous Rachel Krall book Night Swim and the way she used the different perspectives (Hannah, Rachel, and Rachel’s podcast) to tell the story. She used a similar style in this book which kept the story fast paced and intriguing. I think some readers will guess the plot twists, but overall I found it to be an enjoyable read. I am interested in reading more of the Rachel Krall series.
Dark Corners is a really neat exploration of influencer culture, including its dark, toxic side. I loved everything about this story! The changing POVs, the way information was presented, the well-written characters - it had all the twists I look for in a thriller. I was hooked from the very first page! Rachel Krall is a dynamic and relatable MC, and I hope she stars in future stories. I read Dark Corners without first reading The Night Swim and can confirm it stands well on its own. Of course I’ll now be adding that book to my tbr. Overall, a fast paced thriller where everything ties together well in the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Rachel Krall is at it again! In this second book featuring the True Crime podcaster, we find Rachel summoned to Miami by the FBI in what she thinks is an exclusive look into a high profile case. Instead, Rachel finds herself tangled in a noxious web of murder, missing social media influencers, and cryptic messages from a soon to be released potential serial killer.
Full disclosure: I loved The Night Swim and highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good thriller and True Crime so I was obviously floored to get a chance to read Dark Corners as an ARC. Unfortunately, this was just okay for me. I wanted to love it so much more but found so many things that turned me off. First, it felt very....flat. Not a lot of action and tons of rather dry and boring descriptions. I understand it's fiction but just too many sheer coincidence moments as well as Rachel's involvement in FBI investigations? Way too far fetched to the point that it was almost comical. It felt like too many subplots, too much time spent on the influencers, and a twist that I saw coming miles away. The storyline had some promise but overall I was a bit let down. I'll still read every word Megan Goldin writes. I just hoped for another one to wow me.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the chance to read and provide my honest review.
“ Always know what you are walking into. Dark corners can be dangerous points.”
If it’s a Megan Goldin book I have loved it and devoured it This one was no exception
Dark Corners is book 2 in the Rachel Krall series. We first met true crime podcaster Rachel Krall in Nightswim. Rachel returns to help the FBI find a missing social media influencer. We delve into the world of lifestyle influencers on social media. And while it may appear glamours on the surface, it can be cutthroat & deadly!!!
A solid thriller that had many twists and turns and keep me guessing till the very end.
While this is a follow up to Nightswim it can easily be read as a stand alone.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC in return for my honest review
This was such a frustrating read for me. I loved Rachel Krall in The Night Swim, and was really looking forward to continuing with her story, but I didn’t feel like I was even reading the same character. In addition to being way more unlikable, she makes a lot of unwise choices that were out of character. To me, this read way more like a police procedural with the story following both Rachel and FBI Special Agent Joe Martinez. There were also no podcast transcripts which was one of my favorite elements in The Night Swim. While that book had a lot of depth and nuance behind it, this felt like your average thriller with nothing truly making it stand out. It’s certainly not a bad book, but with my high expectations, it was a letdown. This can be read as a standalone, but I recommend you just read The Night Swim instead 🤪.
Dark Corners by Megan Goldin

Terrence Bailey is about to be released from prison. Mere days before his release he is visited by a popular influencer, Maddison Logan. Now Maddison is missing and the FBI is asking podcaster Rachel Krall to help find her.
.
I had a lot of fun reading this one but I think I liked Night Swim more.
This was a fast paced mystery with so many questions.
The biggest being What happened to Maddison? Was she abducted and killed or did she runaway?
I enjoyed every minute of trying to put this puzzle together. The story moved quickly and I was sucked in from the first chapter.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an E-Arc copy of this novel. A good stay up late into the night novel.
Rating 4.6
Megan Goldin is good with words. No, not good --- genius. From her previous novel Stay Awake she has gained traction and developed an even better writing style. She crafts words so skillfully and sets scenes just right to build anticipation for the next chapters and appreciation for the portion a reader is currently traversing.
Everything from first page until before exposition is deliciously intriguing. I really enjoyed peeling back the covers to all the revelations that permeate this story.
It is insanely fast-paced but enables the readers to keep up with the narrative style. There is a lull at about 70% through but it all picked up pace twice from there.
The big reveals all came so perfectly together at the end. I have two complaints though --- the climactic exposition was a bit too brief in my opinion. I would have liked to see a more drawn-out version of events. Additionally, I had expected a more elaborate finale. However, all loose ends were tied, and I for one couldn't think of any loophole in the story.
Rachel Krall is a protagonist I can route for: intelligent, fearless, and determined. I enjoyed this second book in the series, although it could easily be read as a stand-alone. Dark Corners kept me on my toes, and although I had some idea of how it would play out, I didn't solve the entire mystery too early.
