You guys, this book. No, no, no. No. It’s hard to believe that the writer who created a completely enthralling thriller like The Night Swim could follow it with two total stinkers in a row. Her second book, Stay Awake was a mess and this one was pretty much as dismal.
In The Night Swim, Goldin created Rachel Krall, our protagonist. She is sharp as a tack; she is confident and strong; and she is determined to get to the bottom of the cases she features on her wildly popular podcast ‘Guilty or Not Guilty’. After loving the first book, I was so excited for a follow up starring Rachel Krall.
In Dark Corners, the kick-ass female protagonist I’d come to love was written as though she was a whole other person. Instead of the admirable character Goldin created in the first book, the Rachel Krall we got this time was rude and smug and much focus was centred on her being “so sexy” with her “copper hair” that made her “look like a Viking princess”. I’m sorry - what? Who is this woman?
On top of the serious let down due to lack of continuity (since this is supposed to be a sequel), I actually found several typos and found the dialogue to be very disjointed at times.
I’m still holding out hope that Megan Goldin can produce a damn good book again. My fingers are crossed for more of the magic she created in The Night Swim.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for a free early copy of this book exchange for my honest review. The opinion above is my own.
I really enjoy Megan Goldin's books, and I was definitely excited to see Rachel Krall return in Dark Corners. I did find that for whatever weird reason, it was REALLY difficult for me to keep the characters straight in this book - which is probably my only real criticism, and probably entirely on me. Just one of those weird things, I never fully absorbed character name and role in combination.
Outside of that, this was a weird, twisty, intriguing look into the influencer culture, as well as police procedure. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and look forward to more from Goldin.
Rachel Krall, infamous true crime podcaster, is called in to assist in finding Madison Logan, a social media influencer when she suddenly disappears under suspicious circumstances after visiting Terrence Bailey in jail. Terrence is a suspect in multiple murders and is about to be released from prison and investigators are desperate to find enough evidence to hold him for the murders so he can't commit more once released! But, how does he tie into the disappearance of Madison? He must have an accomplice?!?! Many who know Terrence believe he is innocent but many more believe in his guilt! Who is Terrence Bailey, really? And, why was Rachel's name brought up during Madison's visit with Terrence? And, who is the suspicious man with a notable odor of garbage who is being linked to all the places Madison has recently visited?
Lots of questions arise throughout Dark Corners with a slow burn to the end!!
Dark Corners was an enjoyable read! The characters were interesting, well developed, and multi-dimensional resulting in difficulty guessing the ending of the story. The whole situation and a few side stories were a little far fetched resulting in my 4 star rating but it was a quick, easy read that I would recommend!
Thank you Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
‘Always know what you’re walking into. Dark corners can be dangerous points.’
‘Dark Corners’ by Megan Goldin was SO MUCH FUN. I read ‘The Night Swim’ a couple years ago and it was like revisiting my old pal. I don’t remember everything about that book but I know I liked it. This follow up was solid!
In this sequel, famous crime podcaster Rachel Krall is back! She is recruited by the FBI to aid in an investigation into a missing influencer- Maddison Logan. Before she disappeared, she was seen visiting a convicted serial killer in prison. Why?! Where is Maddison now? Rachel uncovers the dark and dangerous world of social media influencers and the things many do to get ahead.
I really loved this one!!! And Holy Cow. I don’t know if I can ever use a rideshare ever again after reading this book! ALSO, side note, I’m glad I don’t have body oder that smells like rotting garbage!!
‘Dark Corners’ comes out on August 8, 2023. So until then, read ‘The Night Swim’ so you can catch up. Thank you @netgalley, @stmartinspress and @megangoldinauthor for this early review copy! SOLID!!
Q. Have you ever had a bad ride share experience? Most of mine have been good buuuuut there was one in Austin, Texas where I think the guy may have been sleep driving. How could he see through closed eyes?! He may have just been high. Anyway. My friend thought we were goners.
🖤🖤🖤
Many many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
I soaked up every second of The Night Swim, and it got me back into my love for reading thrillers, and I can say I’m a fan of Megan Goldin’s writing. Dark Corners is pegged as a sequel, but it can absolutely be read as a standalone. Rachel and her podcast make an appearance, but nothing from the first book outside of her character and occupation makes its way into this one, so it’s perfectly fine to read as a stand-alone. This one is a solid thriller - a little bit of a slow burn for the first half, but once we got moving, it really got moving - definitely recommend for thriller lovers out there.
Thank you again to NetGalley and the publishers for this copy in exchange for my review. Pub date is August 8, 2023!
Wow!! All I can say is WOW!!
Megan Goldin has created a masterpiece that I literally could not put down! Although I didn’t realize the main character, Rachel Krall, was a character from a previous book, Night Swim, I think that Dark Corners is a stand alone work of art!
Rachel Krall, a true crime podcaster, is flown in to consult on a case in Florida. After meeting with an inmate, everything turns on it’s head. Between a missing social media influencer, a sketchy rideshare driver, and a bunch of unsolved murders, Goldin leaves you turning page after page to see what happens next.
You will want to mark your calendars, set your alarms, do everything possible to not miss when this book comes out August 8th. Definitely Preorder this bad boy!!
This story was well-written and engaging enough to keep my attention throughout. With a fast-paced plot and an interesting storyline, it was a quick read for me that was easy to get lost in. While this was technically the second in a series, it would be easily read as a standalone and is honestly quite different from its predecessor, despite sharing a main character.
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC. What a great suspenseful read! I loved the Night Swim and this second installment did not disappoint. The writing and characters were very well done. The story line kept me guessing and dying to tie everything together. I could have done with a little less of the social media parts of the book. Overall an enjoyable read
Although I hardly remember Rachel Krall and her character as a podcaster in The Night Swim, this was still super easy to get sucked into! I loved how fast paced this was, and legit creepy 😳
There were a couple of twists I didn’t see coming which to me is the mark of a decent thriller! 👏🏽
The ending was kinda meh and felt abrupt, but otherwise this was an awesome book! I hope Goldin does a 3rd Rachel Krall novel!! 🤍
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. I was excited to read another book by Goldin. She really is an underrated author out there. As soon as I read the premise about a true-crime podcaster getting involved with the FBI and a criminal, I knew I was in. The whole novel with have you guessing what is going to happen and even up until the ending I never had it right. I also enjoyed the little romance thrown in there. Readers will love it.
Great book! The influencer part is a little over done but the mystery was well thought out. This will be a great beach/pool read. I enjoyed the pod casters point of view. The police were shown in a believable light as well.
Full disclosure: I had not read “The Night Swim” prior to this ARC. But after reading “Dark Corners” and thus transforming into a Megan Goldin stan, I’m finally starting the book which precedes this one. All that is to say: you can fully follow this plot even without reading Goldin’s other books!
This was such one of my favorite thrillers that I’ve read so far this year! It felt almost like a grown-up version of Pip from Holly Jackson’s “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” series.
Like Pip, Rachel Krall hosts a popular true crime podcast which helped exonerate a wrongly convict man. So when the FBI tasks her with interviewing a suspected murderer two days before he’s scheduled to be released, she seems like the ideal person for the job. This is just the tip of the iceberg, though, and she quickly gets embroiled in tracking down a social media influencer who went missing after visiting that same suspected killer.
All of this happens in Florida, of course. A state that some would consider to be the dark corner of the U.S. (which I get to say, as a Floridian myself).
It took me probably about 30-40 pages to feel immersed in the plot & get a sense for the cast of characters, but once I did—I was hooked! I flew threw through this book in one day. There’s a great sense of momentum and the ending felt satisfying overall (though it would have benefited from spending more time on cleaning up some of the side plots). Plus, as someone who enjoys watching the social media influencer phenomenon from afar, the angle of this mystery made for an easy hook. I’d definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys thrillers!
Thanks to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Such a good book that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. This book is a thriller through and through and I can't wait to see what Megan Goldin comes out with next!
A dark and dizzying delight! As the release date for a murderer approaches, a social media influencer who visited him goes missing. Rachel Krall, a true crime podcaster, goes undercover in the world of social media influencers to investigate her disappearance.
Exploring the world of influences, Rachel investigates a past crime while trying to avoid a future crime from potentially occurring. Meanwhile she’s forced to confront the dangers that lurk in the dark corners of the internet. Dark Corners is intoxicatingly original and utterly absorbing. I highly recommend!
This is technically the second Rachel Krall book, The Night Swim being the first, but this one can be read as a standalone, and the two books don’t interact in any way besides Rachel being the protagonist.
To Be Published August 2023 (No Spoilers intended)
Book 2 in the Rachel Krall series has us immersed in an influencer convention which may be connected with a series of kidnappings, murder and a soon to be released convict. I really enjoy the character of Rachell as she is not afraid to pursue things which interest her. We also have a male counterpat FBI agent who she is able to share things with. This is a fast paced mystery puzzle with so many interconnecting character that we just want to read to the end, Highly enjoyed and look forward to seeing more of this character.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own and freely given.
Thank you St. Martin's Press for this great. Surprise. I adore this author. I have all I need suspance, secrets and love. I could not put it down. Was just too perfeft. I have a spot for podcasts lately. Really never have time in real time but in books I can not get away. They know how to took me and keep me.
I loved Megan Goldin’s previous work and so was very happy to read this incredible follow up. This book had me enthralled the entire way, as frightening as parts of it were! Highly recommend it to all thriller lovers out there!
I loved this book! This is the 2nd book in the Rachel Krall series but it was great as a standalone. I am going back and reading the first one now!
Rachel is a famous true crime podcaster who gets tangled into an FBI investigation as she's called in to meet with an inmate, Terrance Bailey who FBI believe is responsible for some missing girls and murders. Terrance had one other visitor prior to Rachels visit, Madison, who is now missing since she left the prison. The way Rachel inserts herself into the investigation even when FBI agent Martinez insists she go back home kept me turning pages to see what all happens. She finds herself at a influencers party where more and more details keep coming to light and more people wind up missing, even dead.
Thank you Netgalley, the publisher and amazing author for my ARC!
The Night Swim was one of my favorite books of all time!!! This follow up totally rocked my world! It had such rich character development and atmospheric composition. I will pick up all of her books now!
Thank you Megan Goldin, Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this book .
I've enjoyed previous books from this author so I was excited to read "Dark Corners" and it did not disappoint!
This was the second installment in the Rachel Krall series but I think it could read as a stand alone as well. Our MC Rachel has a fierce personality that seems to have only grown since "The Night Swim" , Book One. If she is feeling or thinking something you're most likely going to know about it. At times it can be abrasive and maybe a little off putting but I still really enjoy her character.
Without giving away too much away I really enjoyed how Rachel was involved in more of the action (more detective than true crime podcaster), the budding enemies to lovers romance and social media influencer plot lines.
If your a fan of a suspenful , twisty, unputdownable Mystery Thriller, you should pick this one up!
