It was fun to guess if it was an animal's butt or face in the pictures, even as an adult. Kids would have fun with it. There are good facts about the animals after the body part is identified.

I won't lie: the title and premise of this book made me a bit uncomfortable at first. "Butt or Face" sounds dangerously like "butter face," a slang term referring to a woman who is physically attractive in every way "but her face."

However, I'm so glad I gave the book a shot because it won me over in the first few pages. Turning the page and discovering "it's a butt!" made me smile every time. I can't imagine any kid or former kid reading this and not cracking a smile at least once or twice. Each butt-or-face reveal is paired with fun animal facts that are informative enough to give the silliness some substance, but not so heavy-handedly educational that it becomes unfun.

Butt or Face? is a well-crafted children's book that expertly balances the thin line between fun and nourishing.

Oh my goodness, they had me hooked with the title and cover! I could not wait to get my hands on this book!
I loved the mix of humor and real life facts presented in this children’s book. I can see it becoming a favorite amongst teachers and students! I will certainly be buying a copy for my classroom!

I imagine Butt or Face to be flying off the shelves of their Elementary classroom or Library. Find me a kid that doesn't giggle at being able to talk about butts. After the title pulls the reader in and you opens the cover you will find top notch photos. Some of them had me guessing what I was looking at and I had a few giggles myself. The answer is revealed with a full size picture on the following page along with fun facts.

Some animals were not so common so it lends an opportunity to learn something new as well. The best part about learning is also being able to have fun doing it. I have confidence this book will in fact do that.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Anticipated publish date is July 11, 2023.

Thank you NetGalley, Sourcebooks Explore, and Author Kari Lavelle for the advanced opportunity to read. Review will be posted to NetGalley and GoodReads.

My preschool boys loved this book, and I can't wait to share it with my patrons at storytime. This is a part-to-whole photograph where readers are looking at either the butt or face and have to guess! Then the whole picture is shown on the next page, and the answer is revealed. Instead of being gimmicky or cutesy, this book is factual, interesting, and beautifully photographed. I highly recommend this book for all ages, and it is great for a laugh, but you learn a lot, too!

Butt or Face? will absolutely be a winner with children - guessing which end of an animal is pictured is hilarious and the educational information included is spot on for children of all ages. Would be excellent for a classroom!

Thank you to SOURCEBOOKS Kids and NetGalley for this ARC!

In order to give an honest review, I shared this book with my 3rd grade students. Verdict? Butt or Face? is a winner! First of all, the guessing of which end is shown on these creatures is a fun guessing game. We learned a lot about some different species! The photographs certainly capture the essence of each creature. Second of all, 3rd graders still think it’s funny to hear their teacher say “butt!” My students immediately asked if there is another Butt or Face? book that they could read!

Butt or Face? by Kari Lavelle is a great addition to any classroom library! Well fine! Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for this early copy!

Clever! A bit of fun while learning some quick facts about a lot of lesser known animals, such as, the orchid mantis and star-nosed mole 😍

I could see this being a real hit in the classroom!

My little ones really enjoyed this one, even got them interested enough to watch some animal documentaries after. It's really fun to see them enjoy something and laugh together.

Readers must guess whether a small section of a photograph is showing the butt or face of an animal. I think this is a funny and entertaining way to introduce young readers to rare/uncommon species. I found myself really engaged in the guessing game and I learned new things myself about different creatures.

One of the top things I loved about this book is that it works for little kids and bigger kids. If you are just trying to entertain a 5 year old, you can just teach them the name of the animal or insect you aren't overloading them. But with older kids, there are details and information about each of those animals and insects. This is definitely a good one that can make little kids laugh when they guess wrong, but also teach older kids and make them all use their minds.

I really hope our library purchases this book. It was funny and informative. Most of the animals I had never even heard of. I can 100% imagine reading this to my children at home and at outreach storytimes at daycares and schools. Interactive and fun book!

This is fantastic. First of all, the title and cover are perfect: googly eyes on things not meant to have eyes are hilarious. I enjoyed every part of this book. Each page has a picture, and the reader needs to guess butt or face. I laughed through the whole thing. I recommended this one to a friend of mine who teaches for preschoolers in the summer. I told her it’s perfect for talking about defense mechanisms and other kinds of animal features. Also, they get to say the word “butt.” I need to add this one to my library. Read it.

This book is definitely making it into the rotation for birthday party gifts! My 1st grader has read this many times and the best part, he’s learning (and retaining) very specific facts about the animals featured in this book. What a fun way to present educational info in a way that kid’s enjoy.

I was intrigued by the title, concept and cover of the book. After reading it, I think there are too many spiders included! Other than that the fact boxes are engaging. I also think the book would be more comprehensive if there was more back matter.

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.

I am not supposed to be the target audience for this book, but I have the mentality of a 12 year old boy so...This book was a blast for me. And I'd love to say that I picked out all the butts and all the faces, but that would be a lie and I already told you that this review would be honest. After the zoomed in photos, you find out what part of the animal you were looking at, as well as some information about the animal and why scientists believe it looks the way it does. I really think the butt or face interactivity would keep kids interested through the facts so they're going to learn some things (I did).

The illustrations were fun even when they weren't obvious what we were looking at. It was nice seeing the full animals as well (except the spiders, I didn't have fun seeing those). I imagine this book would lose it's appeal for me after the first couple of reads because by that point I'd remember what each of the pics are, but I think a kid would want to read it a lot because when else are Mom and Dad going to let you talk about butts all willy nilly? Overall I give this book 4.96 out of 5 stars.

There have been a number of engaging nature books for kids that provide a partial photograph of an animal, and the reader is tasked with identifying the animal. This is not one of them.
First I have a real issue with choosing a title to appeal to the lowest element of culture. I know kids love bathroom and body humor but there is no need to buy into it.
Second the use of those emojis or cartoons of eyeballs was very distracting and added nothing to the experience.
And third, and most important, the selection of photography just wasn’t very good.
I would not purchase this book for a library or a personal collection.

Just reading the title I knew this would be a great addition to our library and after reading it I can't wait to share it with my students. It's a great blend of facts and humor, and what kid doesn't like to read a book about butts. A must-buy for elementary libraries.

*I received a copy from NetGalley for a fair and honest review.

This book is lots of fun to read, and it is also amusing to try to determine if what you are sending is a face or a butt. The pictures are interesting to examine and the text is clear and informative.
