This book is hilarious. From the moment I read the title I was chuckling to myself, and I knew that the boys who use my Libraries would love it. Upon reading, I was not disappointed in the least. The guessing is fun, gets the reader engaged. The pictures and format of the text is great and will be very appealing to my students. I really enjoyed this books and would be very interested in purchasing other titles too if this became a series.
Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOK Kids Publishing Group for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
I tried really hard to be offended by the title of this book. But then I read the book to my three oldest kids; it was hilarious to them. They decided that the game “Butt or Face” was a great way to learn about new animals.
I liked how there many levels of comprehension for different age groups. My five year old liked reading through the book, playing the game, and learning what the animals were called. But my older kids appreciated the animal facts that accompanied each picture.
The kids like learning about animals, and they like books with pictures of those animals. Overall, this was a fun and exciting way to accomplish both.
I think this would be a silly gift for other families or a fun book to check out at the library.
Review to come early July/close to the release day on blog/goodreads/etc..
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I just HAD to click that button on Netgalley when I saw this hilarious looking and sounding book! I am curious if those googly eyes are real, otherwise I am almost tempted to buy the book myself and stick some on there. XD
In the animal kingdom there are animals whose butts are easy discernible. Or whose heads are like; YES, that is a head. But what about creatures who are a bit harder to figure out? Well, that gives us the question of Butt or Face?. In this book we get a small sneak peek to the body of an animal and we have to guess if that is a butt or if it is a face, and BOY I had so much fun guessing. Puzzling if it was a butt or not. I got a lot of things right, but a few were just like, wait, that is a (insert correct answer)??? Poor thing!
Next to having fun guessing we get some information on the chosen animal. From a small introduction/base information about the animal to some fun tiny facts surrounding a cute photograph of the animal. It was a great fun and I am glad that there is more than just guessing. You are actually also learning about the animal. Some facts are gross (like the sea cucumber one), some made me laugh, and they were all interesting!
I would highly recommend this fun book to all. It isn't too long, but oh what fun will you have. With some giggles and laughs as you guess. There are some animals with weird faces/butts.
I thought I would love this concept. It started out fun. Then... the pictures themselves started to get a bit questionable. That might be my own adult perspective coming into play though. I think there would be plenty of demand if it was seen on the shelves based on the title and cover image alone.
Not sure about this one.
This is a fun book, packed with great colours and photos. The title caught the attention of my children, and the facts kept it as they turned the pages, trying to work out if each photo was a butt or a face. And they didn't get them all right!
Perfect for kids who love mini-beasts and animals, and there are certainly some unusual creatures in this book!
I received an advance copy via Netgalley.
Wonderful book which answers the question: How come I cannot tell a butt from a face, for animals other than humans? I have learned how to do this with humans (don't ask), but with animals? This is a wonderful children's book, full of great examples of the butt/face dilemma, with lots of interesting facts about animals. This book is not in bad taste, but it is for the young at heart or the curious or the immature. Given that I am all three of these, I loved the book. Well done! Well done indeed!
Thank you NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Kids, Sourcebooks Explore for accepting my request to read and review Butt or Face?.

This is a miss from me. The audience is age 4 and up. Right away I was struck with explaining to a 4-year-old "scientific observations". This was after I explained that butts did more than poop. As of yet, I don't know that I'm going to say no to having a Proboscis monkey from Borneo.
This could not be a bedtime book. The pictures are what nightmares are made from.
This is possibly a text book for middle grade?
I am bothered by how the concept got this far. Sincerely, I am saddened that I can't find one kind thing to mention.
I knew as soon as I saw the title of this book that I had to read it with my kids. They, like most kids, love anything that involves butts or animals and this includes both. They laughed the entire time, learned about new animals we’d never heard of of before despite reading hundreds of animal books, and they connected with the book when they reminded me of the spider that we found when camping at Lake Brownwood State Park that had a face on its butt. This is a great, funny, educational book that your kids will love.
Thank you NetGalley and SourceBooks Kids for the opportunity to read this book in advance of publication.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. All little kids like to talk about butt, and this book is excellent because it talks about butt and it's educational!
This book combines silliness with such great information. It invites such great discussion and questions. My fact loving 8 year old loves it! I would highly recommend using this in any classroom.
This cute lil book even taught me a few things! So fun and funny and informative, I loved it!
Big thanks to NetGalley in exchange for an honest review!
This quirky book challenges young readers to decide if the pictures they see are butts or face of unique animals/insects from around the world. While playing the silly game it also offers the opportunity to learn about uncommon creatures from all around the world.
The inclusion of map at the end to see where the creatures are located in the world as well as an overview of what they eat is fantastic. I am excited to buy this for my discovery channel obsessed niece and nephews!
I like everything about this funny, educational book which keeps you guessing. The photographs were good, but the facts presented in such a giggle-worthy way were the best part. Be sure to examine the end pages showing where the animals live and what they eat. I predict this will be very popular boys who like gross facts.
What a lighthearted, silly, yet educational book for both kids and grown ups to enjoy! Not only were there lots of moments when we were certain we were looking at a butt or a face and then found out we were completely wrong, but there were also plenty of laughs and giggles and shouts of "ewww!" at certain photos. Come to find out, the photos we thought were gross turned out to be the opposite of what we were thinking they were!
I highly recommend this fun book for children at home or at school. It will keep them engaged and help to make learning fun. I even think it's worth a look for all of us "big kids" that still find butts to be funny!
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Kids for providing me with an advanced review copy of this book. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
My kids loved this book! I can’t wait to share it with my students. Close ups allow kids to reason their way through this book, fathoming a guess as to whether each image is the face or butt of an animal. The next page answers the question and is filled with facts about some unusual animals. Very engaging!
Butt or Face? is an intriguing title that captivates the attention of children and adults alike. The facts about animals and how they use the markings on their faces and behinds for protection and/or to their advantage were all so interesting and it was so much fun to play "face or butt" with my husband and kids. We learned about new animals and new facts about animals we didn't know much about.
This book is a funny take on nonfiction animal facts! My kids adored it and laughed while learning. Great concept and eye-catching pictures and information. Especially popular with the younger crowd who found JOY in being able to say "butt" so freely at school and home :) Lots of laughs along with lots of learning!
I would definitely recommend this for all libraries and homes!
Thank you to NetGalley and SOURCEBOOKS Kids, Sourcebooks Explore for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Much better entertainment than all the social media combined!
Cos you are going to pull your hairs if you are the impatient adult reading this book of games trying to guess if it is the butt or the face of the animal/organism we are talking about. But then you will burst out laughing for each when you know the answer the next instant!
A definite recommendation! Get it for the fun it would provide (and also for the information!).
Thank you, SOURCEBOOKS Kids, for the advance reading copy.
Ok, I blame this book for my almost 10yr old now requesting we go and buy googly eyes, haha!
This book is AWESOME! Seriously awesome! It is not just hilarious (because butts are fun and funny no matter what age you are, right?), but it also makes a great conversation starter about animals. Some faces/butts are so weird that you just have to look up more photos of that animal and try to figure it out for yourself!
Also, the book is beautiful. The photos are gorgeous. The layout is great. And the concept is just brilliant – make the kid laugh out loud and make the kid curious, and make the kid learn a lot of new stuff.
And if you need a last-minute gift for anyone, this book is it, it is just perfect. I wish there were more than 5 stars to give it!
What an entertaining book! My kids were cracking up at every turn of the page. We were stumped many times at whether the photo is a butt or a face. Who knew animals looked so funny?
