This was a cute book. I like how it described the process of telling your friends and classmates that you now have a sister/brother (whatever the case may be).
Kids are so much better at this stuff than adults are, and I think this kind of shows that.
The book is also really accessible, which I appreciate. There have sometime been kids picture books that I come across and while they look like a kids book, with lots of nice illustrations, they end up being aimed at an older audience, because the language is for an older audience. Not so with this book; it's fun, it rhymes, and I know that any kid would enjoy reading it.
*received for free from netgalley for honest review* Super cute book! "you need to chill" can also be applied to many other things but truly an awesome book!
This book is amazing. The rhymes are a little harsh at times, but the message is entirely what this book is about. We start with a child going to school and all of her classmates are asking what happened to her brother Bill? Where did Bill go? The classmates have some wild Bill scenarios that include spaceships, baseball, etc. Going into this book blind, I was very happy to find out it wasn’t something sad. Instead. we find out that Bill is now Lily, and anybody who has a problem with it just needs to chill. I loved it. This is so well done, so right to the point. Tt makes what can at times be a tough subject fun. It also states all the ways that Lily is still the exact same person. Lily is Lily with a new name. I loved absolutely everything about this, and it should be a staple in every public and school library!
I LOVE this book! This is Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” in picture book format. The little main character is such a cutie and full of personality. It’s very quotable and intriguing. I’m not a huge fan of the front cover, but the little trans hearts on the back cover are such a cute detail!
This is a wonderful introductory book for young children about transgender! It is so positive and normalizing. The message is simple and presented simply. I loved the rhymes and the illustrations are beautiful. Highly recommended for all.
As we head into Pride Month, I decided to read this cute picture book "You Need to Chill" by Juno Dawson. In this book, we meet our young female character who at school, all her friends are asking her questions about her brother Bill as they haven't seen him around lately. The main female character blows off her friends and tries to downplay the situation by telling everyone that they need to just chill. Near the end, the readers of the book learn that Bill is now a transgender female named Lily. What I loved about this picture book was that the book wasn't OTT and didn't push the agenda but showed readers that being part of the LGBTQA+ community isn't a big deal and that just because someone identifies as the rainbow community doesn't mean they are any different than you and me. You Need to Chill by Juno Dawson is the perfect picture book for children aged 3-6 years old.
#Youneedtochill is a cute book about a girl reacting to everyone asking what happened to her brother after she transitioned. Would be good for a younger classroom.
Absolutely adorable. I loved the rhyming passages. I loved that it was a trans positive book for children. The artwork was amazing for a children's book. I would totally have read this as a child because the title alone would have grabbed my attention. The cover artwork kind of reminds me of what I looked like as a kid because my hair was always a mess and I loved my sunglasses.
When I picked up this children's book, I hadn't read the already published comments, so the final twist when she reveals where her brother went, was a complete surprise! I thought it was very quirky and fun the way the author leads the reader to the big reveal, all complete with beautiful illustrations, and a message about acceptance and tolerance, and open-mindedness. Regardless of your personal opinions on the matter of gender, I think it's important that books like this exist, so that children can feel safe to talk about the subject freely, respectfully, and without preconceived bias or judgment. In the end, you can only foster inclusivity by being open and transparent. That's why I think the publisher should be more transparent and precise about the labelling of the book...
I thought that this was a lovely story and the illustrations were perfect for the book!
The book was well written and easy to follow and my five year old daughter loved it, she is at an age at the moment where she isn’t phased by things like this.
My friend transitioned from female to male and she just took it all in her stride – I wish that more adults would adapt the same approach!!
I loved the message of the book and the way that the story was written too
The book was a positive read that we both really enjoyed.
It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended!
Did we learn nothing from Alex Gino’s debacle? Stop deadnaming and misgendering your characters! Nearly the entire book was deadnaming and misgendering a character for a laugh! That is not okay. That does a lot of harm and does not effectively educate.
This short and sweet book is a fine addition to any library. It addresses an older sibling's gender transition with humor and a calm, down-to-earth vibe. Many children have a transitioning person in their family, and this book is a light-hearted way to introduce that idea. There is no indoctrination, no treatise on gender theory -- the message is simple: my brother is now my sister, and that is normal and good.
This book is a beautiful, beautiful thing. It is sweet and funny and loving, with gorgeous illustrations illuminating a joyous celebration of identity and pride in who you are. I loved this.
Thanks to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Kids for the ARC of this!
A cute picture book about trans acceptance. The main character fields questions about her “missing brother” Bill, who is really her sister Lily. The rhyming was very fun to read aloud and the illustrations were adorable.
Amazing book of inclusion and the normalcy of same sex relationships. Everyone “just needs to chill”. It’s a wonderful motto. Would highly recommend.
This a cute book about a sibling who is transgender. It is set up in a cute way that all the kids are asking about her brother Bill and after a lot of wrong (and crazy) guesses, it's finally revealed that her brother Bill is now her sister LIly. While some of the wording to make the rhymes became a little awkward, it was a cute story, great illustrations.
I love this book and plan on adding it to my kiddo's home library as soon as possible. I love the illustrations, the rhyming and the feeling of unconditional love and acceptance that beams off of the pages!
I am a parent to 4 kids and while I have to admit that I do not like it if my kids tell me "to chill" it feels like the perfect wording for this book.
My youngest kiddo will love it too!
Juno Dawson's debut picture book is a joyful celebration of a transgender sibling. A young child is asked by their classmates the whereabouts of their older brother Bill. Many fanciful scenarios are imagined (being eaten by a whale or shark, being taken to Mars by aliens, etc.) and brought to life through Laura Hughes colorful, energetic illustrations. The child tells their classmates no, and that they need to chill. They finally reveal Bill is now Lilly, and that she is just the same as before. Any detractors are met with the titular phrase. The message of acceptance is wonderful and welcoming. I recommend this book!
What a great way to introduce inclusion to kids. It got the message across that even though she got a new name she’s still the same person her sibling and her classmates loved
Such a cute book with a great message. Colorful, fun illustrations with silly and engaging text. perfect for little and big readers alike.
