This book is a fun and refreshing take on a time loop story, I loved that we didn't have to live the day over and over again to get to the plot and that the story takes place over the course of one day. I loved how the other days' details naturally unfolded throughout the story. The side characters were absolutely delightful and I couldn't help but cheer for the main characters in life and in love. This is my first book by the author but it definitely won't be my last.
I finished "The Déjà Glitch" by Holly James last night and what a fun ride it was! It's the first time I read about two people stuck in a time loop for reasons they don't know. And I admit, I was scared of things becoming repetitive due to the time loop thing, but that was not the case.
Here's a bit of the summary. Jack and Gemma have been living the same day over and over again, but Gemma can't remember it, but Jack does. To get out of the time loop, Jack has a theory. Gemma has to fall in love with him in a single day.
Now, as I was saying, I really enjoyed this story. It was fun and crazy while also dealing with deeper topics and fears that the characters are forced to face which worked amazing for their growth.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
With a twist on a Groundhog-Day-theme, this quirky rom-com quickly grabs your attention and has you asking could you fall in love in one day? Gemma is at a crossroads in her life, both personally and professionally. Little does she know that so is Jack. When they literally crash into each other in a coffee shop, déjà vu sets in and what happens is a path to finding out what is missing in their lives, and could it be each other? …but is this the first time they crash into each other or have they done this before?....and how do they get out of it? With relatable, heartfelt characters, this story keeps you guessing, has you laughing out loud, and has you rooting for love! Thanks so much to Holly James, the publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this e-ARC!
This is a very cute premise, they day glitches and happens 146 times before they get it right. It's cute, it's heart wrenching and some good it works. Gemma makes peace with her part, accepts her brother's choices and finds love. It was a cute clean romance.
4 stars!
"The Deja Glitch" by Holly James is a fast-paced, funny, cute twist on the time loop trope. I get so tired of the time loop trope, but Holly James's book kept me invested, interested, and engaged the entire time I read it! I think it's because the plot is told from main female character Gemma's perspective, but Jack, the main male character, is the one who has to convince her that they are stuck in a time loop. He also has a theory that he has to make her fall in love with him in 24 hours to break the loop. AHH! In this story, I feel like the insta-love premise makes total sense since Jack has lived the same day over and over for hundreds of days! It's his job to convince her that his connection and admiration are real. I thought the characters in this book were just wonderful. Gemma is such a lovely person, you really root for her to do well in life! And Jack, what a charming, super sweet guy. They have fantastic chemistry and banter with one another. Their backstories are well-developed, and you fully understand their rationale for doing the things they do in this book. All of the secondary characters are necessary and fleshed out enough to justify their inclusion in the story (Gemma's brother, Gemma's estranged big-wig father, Jack's ex-girlfriend, Nigel, etc). I just fell for this story and these characters, and I highly recommend reading this adorable book!
Thank you to NetGalley, Holly James, and PENGUIN GROUP Dutton for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for my review.
Gemma is living her life but not her dream. She has family issues that weigh her down. She has pretty much given up on love. She feels stuck. When she runs headlong into a man at the coffee shop on her way to work, her world completely changes. Jack believes that Gemma is the key to his happiness and he's not even being creepy. Jack has been stuck in the same day for five months and during that time he has fallen in love with Gemma. The bad part is Gemma can't remember him when the day resets, so Jack has to start over with her every day. Can they break the time loop? Will they find true love together?
I thought the author was so creative in how she overcame the instant love problem. Gemma and Jack kind of fell in love in a day but also kind of fell in love over five months. There are a lot of situations that occur in the story like old love interests showing up. None of the situations seemed odd or out of place. I did have to keep reminding myself that all of the situations took place during a single 24-hour period because so darn much happened! This might be the most upbeat and positive instant love story I have ever read. Seriously, it is so positive. I liked all of the side characters. I thought all of the steps on their journey to finding love all worked well together. Even the conclusion was sweet and happy.
This might be a bit of a SPOILER....What I don't understand is why the author created "hot guy in 202" if that part of the story went nowhere. I kept expecting him to show up as part of the solution to the big problem in the story. I also wondered how in the heck they did everything they did in a single day. It was so much that I began calculating if it could possibly all fit!
This story takes place in Los Angeles. Both of the main characters are adults with professional jobs. This is a sweet love story with a happy ending. I will definitely read more from this author in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book, in exchange for honest feedback.
I have read the time loop plot before, but think that this may be my first in the romance genre. Creative writing by the author for sure. I was unsure if we would ever find out what created the loop... the explanation for everything was slightly underwhelming. I also wish there would have been less about Gemma's brother and more about Jack and Gemma's romance, especially at the end of the book. I still give this 3 stars, because I did enjoy the book, and I got through it in just over a day, so a very quick read!
The Facts: time loop, he falls first, meet cute, romcom
Gemma and Jack have met before. Multiple times. In fact, they're living the same day over and over again. Jack's pretty sure Gemma is the key to get out of this, and he is absolutely in love with her. Poor Gemma is clueless and has no idea what's going on until he kisses her, and everything changes.
I cannot say how much I love this book because it is literally impossible BUT I WILL TRY.
It was so good. Like literally so good. This book was everything I freaking needed, and I'm so happy I bought a physical copy because I had to tab so many things.
I'm a sucker for time loop things. Jack, our MMC, was so dedicated to Gemma. His love and adoration was clear in every scene, and him getting Gemma to try to believe him that they were in a loop while also trying to get her to fall in love with him gave me so much angst; it was perfection. I loved Gemma and Jack's interactions. They were exactly what each other needed in life. The last 50 percent of the book was just so fun and unique, I truly loved every second of this! And the side characters were really chef's kiss.
Do I recommend this one? Hells yeah I do.
This was a very unique twist on the time loop trope. I love books with time loops but sometimes it can become a little redundant. In this one the MC is actually not the one stuck in the time loop. I really enjoyed the plot and how things played out in the beginning.
What didn't work very well for me was the actual romance. From the beginning it was just hard to separate the love interest from the creeper category into endearing for me. I personally think this could have been solved by maybe showing more of the time loops through the love interests POV before jumping in to the current story.
Overall though I really appreciate the unique twist and I think the writing was good. I would probably recommend this one to fans of time loops and will check out other titles by this author.
A quick, cute read that's a fresh twist on a time loop romance. The story is told from Gemma's point of view - a handsome stranger insists he's stuck in a time loop and she's the key to getting him out. But does she believe him?
I enjoyed reading this but by the end it lost momentum. There was a missed opportunity for conflict - one of Gemma's biggest insecurities is being taken advantage of (her father is a famous musician so it's happened before) so I thought she'd be more worried about Jack using her to get out of the time loop.
I also was annoyed at the influencer friend. Her big following and status kind of worked as a magic wand or deus ex machina too many times and felt a bit lazy.
All that said, I still did enjoy it and would recommend it widely! It's a low steam, contemporary romance.
I love stories about glitches in the timeline. The Deja Glitch is a different take on this story, and without giving anything away (or at least very much), this story primarily takes place during a single day. The characters are charming, as they spend the day meeting each other. Definitely a fun beach or pool read.
I’m always interested to see how an author will add their own personal stamp to the time loop trope and Holly James did not disappoint in that respect. I think she explained the “why” of it well and I was actually really feeling this book until around the 75% mark and then it started to lose me a bit.
I really, really did not like that Gemma (main character)‘s Instagram influencer friend live streamed her having a very personal conversation without Gemma’s permission. They used an “ends justifies the means” excuse but that’s still not okay.
I also had a very hard time with the manipulating that both Gemma and her friend did throughout the book. It was the worst at the airport (where quite frankly things took a turn for the unbelievable —-and I’m talking even more unbelievable than a time loop!).
Jack was sweet and the backstory kept this from feeling too much like insta-love. The subplots were also good…Gemma is dealing with her estranged father who is a famous music producer.
So, I overall liked this…It was entertaining and fun and the author’s take on the time loop was different than anything I’ve read in the past.
Synopsis: A woman is trapped in a time loop (think Groundhog’s Day) and the only way to get out is to fall in love.
Pros/cons: In theory, I liked this premise, and this book has great reviews, but the execution just didn’t work for me. For a short book the chapters were extremely long and dragged. I’m also not a fan of insta-love” and find that concept too silly/cheesy. The characters just didn’t have enough chemistry for me to believe they could be in love in a day. But, you win some you lose some, and I’m still thankful to netgalley and Penguin Group Dutton for getting the opportunity to read this early copy. Check it out when it’s released next week!
Well, the title and the cover of Holly James' new novel, The Déjà Glitch, give you a pretty good idea what will be found inside.
And if you still need a clue - I think this blurb from the publisher says it all.
"To break out of a 24-hour time loop, all Jack needs is for Gemma to fall in love with him in a single day. All Gemma needs is to remember him first . . ."
This isn't a new premise, but James puts her own delightful spin on things.
Gemma is a great lead character - one you'll immediately like. She's real and you want her to find happiness. And what about the the sidekick/bestie? That would be Lila. She's loud, outgoing and wants only the best for Gemma. Now what about Jack? Oh, he's a keeper!
The fun is in trying to convince Gemma that she is reliving the same day over and over again. What will change the outcome? I'm going to let you discover that!
James has penned a lovely rom com read. But she also touches on some other relationships - notably family - and exes.
And yes, this is one of those books where you can predict the ending. But it's the journey there that you'll enjoy. I do feel the ending could be shortened up a bit. But overall, this was the perfect book to tuck into my beach bag.
Okay... this book was so good!! I am so here for the time loops and I love how the characters really have chemistry with each other. Gemma in the beginning is having a hard time understanding what is happening. There was even some comic relief in this book from time to time which I admired.
What a delightful time loop romance! Gemma and Jack are lovable, and the story’s focus on one specific day adds a unique twist. The characters are well-developed, and the instant love aspect is heartwarming. It’s a joy to read their journey over a single day. The book is self-aware and full of heartwarming gestures. Lila is adorable, and I hope she gets her own book! A must-read for romance lovers!
Gemma is a radio producer who has been unhappy for a while. Her brother is working overseas and she has a strained - see: nonexistent - relationship with her famous father, and she has closed her heart off to love after being used by her last boyfriend. She meets Jack, a handsome TV writer... and keeps meeting him, and meeting him, for five months, but she can never remember him - until they kiss. On the other hand, Jack has been reliving the same day over and over, fully aware that he is stuck in a time loop, and he thinks the way out of it is for Gemma to fall in love with him too, all within the span of a single day.
I'm giving this book 3.5 stars rounded up! It took me a while to get into this story, but once I did, I did like it. Jack was so dreamy and I loved that we saw the journey Gemma went on both within her relationship with Jack, and the other men in her life. I do wish that there was a little more showing rather than telling when it came to Gemma and Jack falling for each other, but this was a sweet story with a unique plot and I'm glad I read it.
TW: Strained family relationships, mention of the death of a parent
What a fun, lighthearted read! I love time loop stories, and absolutely ate this up. Gemma and Jack are such a lovable couple, and I thought it was so interesting to read this from Gemma's perspective — Jack is the one that's "stuck" and knows it, and it's hilarious to watch him convince Gemma, and see what they get up to over the course of a day.
Both Gemma and Jack had some real problems in their own lives to solve, and the conflict between the two of them felt as real as it could have, and didn't feel forced. I'd say there was no third act breakup, but there were plenty of grand gestures! It felt like so much happened, and I can't believe that it really does take course over just a single day.
Spice rating ends up being 0/5, but I wasn't too mad about it, considering that Gemma and Jack really "just met." Highly recommend as a fun easy read!
Thank you to Holly James, Dutton, and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was cute. It is about Gemma and Jack who get stuck in a loop, reliving the same day over and over again.
I like Holly's style of writing. This isn't the first book by her that I have read, but I could not connect to the characters in this one. Gemma was a little childish to me. The conflicts she had with her brother and father were resolved rather too quickly for me. This was also a bit predictable.
Gemma and Jack's story is a cute one, with an element of "Groundhog Day" thrown in. Jack is bound to repeat the same day until he figures out why he's stuck in it. And Gemma turns out to be the key.
Yet, as others have commented, there isn't any real depth to the story. We don't know why Jack's stuck even though he's certain he has to get Gemma to fall in love with him. As we learn partway through the story, he doesn't even remember his life prior to getting stuck, that's how relevant it was.
Through Jack's efforts to get her to fall in love with him, Gemma comes to realize how shallow and controlling she can be, and she grows as a result of that refelction.
I did enjoy the Nigel Black character, but it was funny that no one ever referred to him as just Nigel. I'm assuming Black is his surname...
Anyway, it's a cute, lighthearted story that's worth a read. But don't expect anything earthshaking or thought-provoking. It's purely heartwarming.
Thank you to Holly James, Penguin and NetGalley for an advance review copy.
