This book is a romance novel about Gemma and Jack who get stuck in a loop, repeating the same day over and over again. Gemma and Jack are left to fall in love in one day in order to break the loop. Along the way, both have made personal growth. There are moments of love, sadness, confusion, grief and acceptance as well as forgiveness.
I really thought this was a cute read. This is the first time I have read a time loop trope book. I really appreciate the way the author,
Holly James, wrote the time loop trope. It didn't get repetitive at all for the readers, although there was a loop. I also wish Rex was more present in this story, dogs always make everything better and he was just everything.
Though, I did really enjoyed this romance novel.
When I decided to read this I thought I would get a cute entertaining story. What I got was the sweetest, most delightful, touching, rom-com I have read in a long time!
Gemma doesn’t know that she is stuck in a time loop until Jack literally crashes into her! He has one day to make her fall in love with him! He’s been reliving the same day for months. He remembers them all, Gemma does not.
Gemma has a history of being burned by men. First her father, a music industry mogul, and her ex. She’s not in the market for a man.
I also loved Gemma’s best friend Lila, a social media influencer. She added so much comedy and charm to the story.
This story was a lot deeper than I was expecting and it did it in such a light way that didn’t make it feel too serious. It touched my heart while keeping the fun. I want this as a movie!
This might be one of my favorite rom-coms of the last few years!
Definitely pick this up, you won’t regret it!
Thank you not NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for this advanced copy.
The Déjà Glitch by Holly James is a captivating and innovative twist on the time-loop trope. With this cleverly constructed romance, James puts a fresh spin on the concept of a time loop.
When Gemma meets Jack at her best friend Lila’s birthday party she feels a strong pull towards him, like she knows him somehow even though this is the first time she remembers them meeting. Jacks asks her to remember him before she leaves for the night which Gemma thinks is odd but endearing. Then she literally runs into him at the coffee shop, the “next day” and he explains he has met her before and has been reliving the same day for months trying to figure out how to get out of the time loop. The key to the time loop Jack thinks is Gemma. Gemma doesn’t know what to think but can’t deny something weird is happening. As things come together and fall apart at the same time Gemma has to decide whether to be vulnerable and let her walls down again.
The premise of the book was fine, but after a third of it I just felt the pacing slowed and the story kind of got lost amongst all the different situations and characters. I especially was turned off by Gemma’s best friend peer pressuring her to drink in the first chapter. But I did like how Gemma finally expressed her feelings to her dad and addressed their relationship. The story was alright but I felt could have been elevated.
The love story of Gemma and Jack is perfect If you’re looking for a fun Rom-Com with a bit of magic 💫
I loved that I was able to finish this book in one weekend - it’s the perfect cozy weekend read. I wasn’t too sure how the aspect of a time loop would work into this story, but it ended up being the best part of the plot! I never once felt confused with their relationship timeline.
The POV is coming from Gemma, who is just living what she believes to be another normal day in her life. But for Jack, he has met her 100+ times and has been living the same day trying to find new ways to help Gemma remember that she’s in love with him. I think this really helped to keep the storyline clear for readers and was a good way to incorporate a “meet-cute”
Jack has just 1 day to have Gemma remember him and realize that she has been in love with him for longer than she believes. Even though we are only see just one day in the loop, I felt like I had gotten enough information of their relationship to know how much they truly love each other.
I loved this major spin to a Groundhog Day-esque storyline!
Throughout reading, I often thought I had figured out which direction the story was going, only to get thrown off and completely surprised.
At first, I wasn’t sure whether I would like the main character, Gemma, but I quickly realized she’s very relatable. She has a lot of insecurities because of things that took place in the past, gets stuck in her head, and self-sabotages on the regular.
Thankfully, she had a quirky best friend named Lila to help her navigate this unusual situation without a blink of an eye. And the adorable love interest, Jack, was a total swoon throughout the story.
Thank you Holly James, Dutton Books, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book!
I was so impressed with how fast-paced this one was! I absolutely love a man who falls first, and even though insta-love isn't usually my fave, the twist came from the fact that only ONE of our two love interests was experiencing it, which was fun!
This one was dripping with Hollywood flair, fun side characters, and bright optimism. A super fun read for anyone looking for a rom-com that will grip them from the first chapter.
I'm not sure how Gemma managed to cram going to the gym, going to Starbucks, running into Jack, leaving work, going to Lila's, going to Lila's psychic aunt, meeting Jack again, going to Caltech to talk to the mad scientist about time loops, ubering home, and then going to work again all before lunch while living in LA. Isn't traffic supposed to be heavy?
And the whole coercion of we're stuck in this time loop you don't remember unless you fall in love with me was definitely a choice.
I didn't like what I read after getting through 1/3 of this book. It just doesn't work for me at all. Time loop stories really work when you see the same day over and over, not one day from the perspective of the character who doesn't know she's in one.
I received an ARC copy of The Deja Glitch by Holly James in return for an honest review. Everything that I write here is completely my own thoughts and opinions. Before I start though I do want to take a moment to thank Netgalley and Holly James for a chance to read this book and review it.
I read this book in a matter of just a few days and at first I was like this is just another Groundhog Day type book but I can say that I was pleasantly surprised. I loved getting to know Gemma Peters, her love of music, and the fact that she was a dog mom. Now these two aspects are not what the book is about but they are two of the things that I loved. Maybe that is because I myself am a dog mom and obsessed with music.
Gemma has a lot of crap in her past having to do with a previous love and the divorce of her parents which in turn make it difficult for her to trust men and fall in love. Oh yeah, it also makes it difficult for her career because she does not want to use her father’s career or reputation to boost herself in any way. I should probably explain that Gemma works in radio on the music side of things and one day she wants to host her own show. Her father is a big wig in the music industry and he has the power to turn people into musical stars or break their careers. He is a very self-absorbed man and one that Gemma is not able to forgive.
Gemma happens to be besties with Lila who is a popular L.A. influencer and they have been friends for years. Lila knows exactly what happened between Gemma and her father not to mention Gemma and her ex-boyfriend. Now Lila is one of the only people that Gemma can confide in about this time loop that she has been in for the past one hundred and forty-four (I think it is 144) days. She has been stuck in it with a man named Jack. He runs into Gemma one morning at the coffee shop causing a huge explosion of coffee to splash over everything including Gemma herself. This happens to be how Jack gets her attention so that he can explain for what seems like the millionth time to him what is happening to them. He has a theory that they are stuck in this time loop and the only way for them to get out of it is if she happens to fall in love with him in one day. She obviously thinks he is gorgeous but possibly crazy as well. She has too much on her mind to take him seriously with her brother traveling back home from across the world and her favorite musician Nigel Black coming to her work for an interview that same day. It isn’t until Jack starts saying things to her that he could not possibly know that gets her rattled and perks her interest.
This is the story of Gemma and Jack. It is a story of them trying to figure out what got them stuck in the first place, dealing with the issues, and trying to stay awake for twenty-four hours in hopes that they magically make it to the next day. This is the story of Jack trying to convince Gemma to fall in love with him the way that he has fallen in love with her during those one hundred and forty-four days. It is also the story of Gemma coming into her own and making discoveries along the way that will change her life forever. So if you are looking for a time-loop romance story then definitely give this one a go because I do not think you will be disappointed.

Dear Fellow Reader,
So much to read and so little time! I feel that way all the time. I see books and think “oh, I need to read that.” But then I have such a long list of those books.
Do you get the daily email from Book Bub? It is a horrible thing is you are a book buyer! I say that because most of the books featured are $2.99, $1.99. or $0.99. So easy to spend that small amount of money, right? And that is how my Kindle reader is so full of books to read!
Just to break out of the genre “rut” I have been in lately, I have a book for you that is not a cozy mystery. I don’t think I would call it a romance novel although it might be a romantic comedy.
The Deja Glitch opens with Gemma in a bar celebrating her best friend, Lila’s birthday. Gemma is more of a homebody than her friend. She is thinking of leaving when Lila points out that Gemma has an admirer that she should talk to. Gemma does but still leaves the bar to go home to her dog.
The next morning, Gemma is in a coffee shop and this handsome stranger accidentally knocks into her and dumps her coffee order all over her. They start talking. She feels like he is familiar but isn’t sure how she would know him. But he convinces her to start talking. She is attracted to him, but he seems to know things about her. As the day goes on, he tells her that they have been replaying the same day for months and that he is trying hard to find out how to break their “Groundhog Day” situation.
I liked the book. It was different and well thought out. It was a different premise and had some plot twists that belong in romantic comedies. There is not only the romance between the couple, but we learn about Gemma’s closeness to her brother and her distance from her father.
I think that it is a good book to keep you guessing.
Thanks for reading.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
This book has a groundhog day vibe in that Jack has been living the same time loop for 147 days. The only thing that seems to change is his interactions with a woman at a coffee shop named Gemma. Jack thinks the only way to break the time loop is to get Gemma to fall in love with him like he has for her over all these days. Unfortunately, Jack has had a 5 month head start on developing his feelings and she has only had one day, unless perhaps, deep down, she can feel the imprint of all their past interactions. Can Gemma trust her gut over what she perceives to be real? This was an adorable time loop romance that I wished explored the idea of other time loops a bit more but it was still a fun read.
This was a new take on a time loop for me and I ate it up. Gemma and Jack are just the cutest. I always enjoyed the character realizing they are in a time loop situation, always fun. The writing was writing and very engaging. I needed to find out how the loop ended.

Jack has been stuck in a time loop for 147 days. The only thing he’s found that seems to change is his interaction with a woman he runs into at a coffee shop named Gemma. He’s decided the only way out is to get her to fall as madly in love with him as he has for her. But he’s had a 5-month head start and she just has one day, unless deep down she somehow feels all their previous interactions. Can she trust her gut or will she remain stubbornly stuck on what’s “real”?
Time travel and time loops are my favorite! And this time loop romance did not disappoint. I loved this little romcom. It takes place mostly in one 24-hour period but so much happens and is revealed in that time. I loved the fast-paced entertainment of it. It’s not spicy hot, but it is romantic, cute, and fun.
Thank you, @netgalley and @duttonbooks for the advanced copy of this book. I loved it!
This was absolutely adorable, and made a time loop love story not seem ridiculous, which is quite the feat. The LA setting was so fun, with various landmarks and neighborhoods playing a role, and the characters were a delight.
3 Stars
I love a good time loop book so I had high hopes coming into this, but I found it to be a bit underwhelming. It focused on 1 loop/day and not on any other loops (which for me is the whole point of a time loop plot) and it felt like it dragged on at parts. I wish I got more character development from Jack, I would've loved to get more insight on the other time loops that he experienced. The epilogue - like so many epilogues I read - was predictable and unnecessary. This was a cute read, just okay though.
Also, happy publication day to this book!
Thank you NetGalley and PENGUIN GROUP Dutton for the ARC!
This was such a fun read! I can't wait for more by this author. I would absolutely recommend! If you are looking for a book to get you back into reading. This is it!
Jack and Gemma are stuck in a time loop reliving the same day. They journey along though out the day making things right in order to set themselves free. It’s a romantic twist to groundhogs day!
Four stars! This was a pleasure to read on vacation this week. The deja vu trope is familiar, but James takes it in new directions. The characters are well developed and down to earth. The LA setting is wonderful. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC!
THE DEJA GLITCH by Holly James was not what I expected given a fantastic premise of a pair of potential lovers caught in a time loop. The premise grabbed me by the throat and kept me going through sludgy prose focusing a great deal on opening doors, walking dogs, doing all the stuff but not getting into the genuine experience of the characters, feeling more quick brush past than deep storytelling. The cover, the premise are a 5, but the read does not deliver on that delicious promise of interesting plot even with the clever twists and turns that startled me from my whirling through the pages waiting for something interesting to grab me. I received a copy of this book and these thoughts are my own, unbiased opinions.
When I came across this book on @netgalley I was ecstatic both because of the synopsis and the author. I read Nothing but the Truth as an ARC back when it came out and LOVED it so obviously I had to read this one. I’ve got to say, it did NOT disappoint!
I adored the way their love story was less flirting (not that that wasn’t included) and more about them helping each other towards the lives they deserve. They are perfect for each other because they each complement the other’s strengths. The multiple occasions that occurred once in a hundred and forty seven versions of the same day leading them where they needed to be wouldn’t have happened if Gemma wasn’t right by Jack’s side and vice versa. Crazy to think all it takes to find your soulmate and the life you’ve always wanted is getting stuck in a time loop.
