This was so fun! I didn’t love it quite as much as her last book but it definitely had the same whimsical vibe. When I started it I was like, do I really need to read yet another book about a time loop? Yes, yes I did!
Gemma and Jack. Jack and Gemma. A fictional couple that I was actually rooting for!
I'm so picky about romance reads and get so easily annoyed, so I am very happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed all of this book! I specifically liked Jack because he was actually a nice guy (how unheard of, lol).
I was a little skeptical in the beginning because it seemed too "insta love" for me (my least favorite thing), but things aren't always as they seem. Jack and Gemma have been stuck in a time-loop living the same day over and over again while one of them is aware and one of them is not.
There was also so much more than romance going on, specifically with Gemma and the strained relationship with her dad. Out of the whole book, the conversations with her dad were my favorite part. The conversations were so deep and realistic that I ALMOST cried a couple times.
Read if you enjoy:
-Clean romance
-Timeloops
-Guy falls first
-Family drama
This was my first book by Holly James but now I want to go back and read her debut Nothing But the Truth.
Thanks so much to Dutton for the ARC! This will be available Aug 1st!
I was thrilled to receive a gifted copy of A Deja Glitch from @duttonbooks! When I was younger, I was obsessed with Bill Murray. I mean I watched it all and repeatedly. Ghost Busters, What About Bob and of course, Groundhogs Day. When I saw that this was a Groundhogs Day mixed with 50 First Dates time loop rom com set in LA-I was READY!
I never thought I would like the “insta love” trope but, this one was spectacular. It just made sense to the story line and in all actuality wasn’t really an “insta love” type of situation since it took 146 days for Jack to fall in love with Gemma. The time loop aspect was done well. It was not repetitive, boring, or overtly complex. Perfectly done and made it super fun. Although this was a clean romance (my fav) there were definite sparks!
I think my favorite character was Lily. I think we need a spin off! She was so vivid, colorful, and fun. If confetti were a person-it would be Lily. I appreciated that there were other things going on in the story as well. Gemma dealt with finding herself, loving herself and some heavy family issues.
Holly James says she loves telling stories with big heart and a touch of magic and I would say she hit the nail on the head.
This book was so much fun to read. It would make a fun movie. Gemma doesn't realize she has been reliving the same day over and over for months. Jack knows and is trying to break the loop. He thinks the key is her falling for him. Gemma doesn't have any interest in relationships after having her heart broken a while back. The events of the day start out with a literal run in between Gemma and Jack at a coffee shop, which is always a good meet cute. The adventures that happen from there are a great read. Highly recommend this one!
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for advanced copy, and I give my review freely
This book was incredible. I usually am not a big fan of time loop books because I feel they are repetitive and lack originality. But this book surprised me in the best way. The writing style was perfection. Holly James did something magical with this book and I cant wait to read more by her. She wove a beautiful tale of love, family, and forgiveness. She did such a great job of describing everything, it was really easy to picture everything she was saying.
I really liked that we didn’t have to see the same day over and over again, but heard bits of the past 147 days from what Jack says. I would have immediately put it down if I had to read the same day several times. But, she found a way to stand out from the other time loop stories out there.
I felt the pacing actually worked really well, I was worried with the story taking place over a 24 hour period that it would feel like a rushed relationship or a slow story. But the relationship pace actually worked well, especially with us knowing Jack was already in love with her and had been with her everyday for 5 months. The story also didn’t feel slow, but had a nice flow to it.
The only thing I wish was different was that we never actually read them saying "I love you". It was implied, but I wanted the confession and the words.
I received this book from NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All statements above are my true
opinions after fully reading this book. This was a quick & enjoyable read!
4 stars / This review will be posted on goodreads.com today.
Such a fun fantasy/time loop/romance novel! I finished this one pretty quickly because it was making me wonder ‘what’s next?’ On every single page.
Gemma Peters is stuck in a rut. She seems okay, good job, wonderful dog, amazing best friend. About a year ago she was dumped by her ex when his career took precedence over her. Nick, the ex, apparently just wanted to get in Gemma’s daddy’s good graces. Because Nick wants to be a big star, and Gemma’s daddy is the one who could get him there.
Today, she will run into a man in a coffee shop that just might break Gemma out of this rut. Jack is handsome, smart, funny. But when he knows who Gemma is, and she has no idea who he is, things are a little creepy. He seems oh so normal, until he tells Gemma that they’ve been repeating this day for months now. Gemma feels the deja vu, but seriously? How can you even imagine that you’re stuck in the movie Groundhog Day?
Utterly adorable novel about forgiveness, love, friendship. One of those books that will simply make you smile over and over again.
Definitely recommend for chick lit lovers.
This is a cute rom-com with a time-loop/groundhog day-esque feel. It is pretty much an instant love so if that isn't your trope, then this probably isn't the read for you. The characters were likeable/relatable and it was nice seeing how Gemma's character evolved after everything that she had experienced. This is a very clean, cutesy read with just a touch of supernatural.
3.5/5 stars
A time loop that can only be broken by love! Gemma's the daughter of a important man in the music industry and they're more or less estranged except for when her brother comes to town- and he's on his way so that the three of them can meet to discuss something important. When she bumps into Jack and ends up covered in coffee, well, everything changes because he tells her that he's been caught in a time loop for five months and he think she's the only thing that can unblock it. Seems they've been meeting and going through the same day over and over but she doesn't remember it although he does. I'll admit I got a little lost in the time loop part of this (even when they went to visit a physicist) so if it bugs you too, focus on the relationships. And not just Gemma and Jack but Gemma and her ex (rat fink), Gemma and her father, and Gemma and herself. This might be a romcom but the time loop time with Jack also sees Gemma stand up for herself and come to terms with her past. Thanks to the publisher for the ARC. It's a good read that will make you smile.
“What, you don’t like a good time loop story? Everyone likes a time loop story.”
Rating: 3.5 rounded up!
Spice level: No explicit content
I went into this one somewhat blind, and I was so pleased to meet Gemma and Jack.
It’s a busy day for Gemma! Gemma is a producer on a radio show, and it’s a big day in her career. In her personal life, her very close brother is arriving home after a 6-month volunteering trip, and unfortunately, he wants to visit their estranged father. She’ll round out the day at her best friend’s birthday. Overall, not an optimal day for a handsome stranger to slam into her and spill tons of coffee on her favorite blouse. What’s more? He explains that he’s lived this day about 150 times, and he’s certain that falling in love with her is the key to getting out of it.
So begins Gemma and Jack’s story. Throughout the day, they’ll deal with long-standing issues in each of their lives, and maybe Gemma will even wake up tomorrow and remember Jack.
I do love a time loop, and I loved the small allusion to Groundhog’s Day. Gemma and Jack both had their own issues to work through (mostly Gemma).
Why 3.5 stars? The last 25% of the book was a bit OTT, even for a time loop. The last 15% also dragged with Gemma and Jack’s analysis of their day. I feel like that could have all been condensed significantly with an author’s note to explain how the time loop worked. Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading the book, and I’d generally recommend if you’re into romcoms.
This book will be released on August 1, 2023!
Thanks to Penguin Group Dutton via NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
This was a quick and enjoyable read! When I first got the book I thought it was going to feel like groundhog day. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was a new take on the time loop. We experience a single day within the loop. This was a charming slow burn romance that I think many will enjoy!
Let’s pretend a guy tells you that he has loved you for days, but you don’t remember him?
Meet Cute - Gemma is celebrating her best friend’s birthday when she has a meet cute with Jack
Kiss to Remember - at the end of the night Jack kisses her and asks her to please remember him
Time Loop - Gemma wakes up the next morning to a brand new day, but is soon told by Jack that they are stuck in a time loop and in order to get out, Gemma needs to fall in love with Jack
One day - Can Gemma spend this one day to discover if she can love Jack for real?
So while this book has a groundhog day type feel, I was very happy to discover that it only takes place during one day for the most part and doesn’t repeat multiple times. Doing this allowed there to be more than just the love plot, but other things that both Gemma and Jack need to change in order to break the time loop. I found that because of this the book was so much more interesting than it might have been.
The Deja Glitch was a cute and quick read. It was a different spin in the time loop story with only being in one of the many loops Jack was experiencing and having the story told from Gemma’s perspective, the one not in the loop. I would’ve loved to have had either dual perspectives or chapters from Jack to fully understand what he was going through.
Oh. My. Goodness.
TIME LOOP?! Yes please.
I loved this way more than I can even put into words honestly.
This is like Groundhog Day meets 50 First Dates all in one.
Jack Lincoln who is trapped in the same Thursday: colliding into a girl in a coffee shop while he's texting and ruining her favorite T-shirt! He runs into the same girl for 147... yes, 147 times! He continues to fall in love with her every single time, over the course of the next 5 months.
Gemma Peters is the daughter of a music industry mogul and her unhappy, uneventful life changes whenever she kisses Jack one night after a night at the bar and sees him again the next morning when she literally bumps into him at the coffee shop.
I really loved how Gemma's character changed towards the end with all she experienced.
Imagine chasing the same person/dream for 5 months and hoping for it to be THE DAY.
This was a very clean and slow burn romance and a charming read!
To break out of a 24-hour time loop, all Jack needs is for Gemma to fall in love with him in a single day. All Gemma needs is to remember him first . . .
I am here to eat my words. I normally hate a time loop trope, but I could not put this book down! I think it was due in part that while they acknowledged the fact that they are in a time loop, the whole book takes place over one day. We don't actually see the time loop happening. I read this one in two sittings! I loved how much Jack pushed Gemma knowing how this day played out over 100 times. I loved the Hollywood aspect of it all and how they were all connected. I enjoyed that Gemma and Jack took such drastic measures to get out of the loop going as far as a physicist and a psychic to get them out of their situation. I also enjoyed the secondary plot of Gemma's family dynamic's. She hates her rockstar dad who tore the family apart, is a little too close to her brother who is trying to move away and goes to her mom for the support in trying to come to terms with all of this. We see her journey to cope with this throughout the book and I enjoyed how it was resolved.
One thing I didn't love was the character Lila, Gemma's best friend. She was somehow the most unsupportive and supportive best friend depending on the hour. I mean she wont pick her up from Jacks house after devastation, but will then run through the airport to live stream Gemma's big grand gesture to win Jack back. She was only present when she benefited from Gemma which made me kinda sad. Even though her character was mid, I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one. 5 Stars!
Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in return for an honest review. This book releases 8/1
The premise of this one is a day that's happening over and over again. Jack has been living the same day over for months and months, and that day always involves Gemma. He's convinced making Gemma fall in love with him will break him out of said loop. The only problem is the redo days are each new to her. This was a quick read and one that was intriguing. I think what I found is I wanted even more of the story. We only got a few of the re-do days, and while the number that Jack had actually lived (140ish) would have been too much, I wanted even more of a window into the story. It was an interesting premise, and I appreciated the other layers of story that were included in the loops. Thanks to NetGalley for the early look at this August 2023 release!
Thank you, Penguin Group Dutton and NetGalley, for the advanced copy of The Deja Glitch.
The Deja Glitch executes the Groundhog Day trope with such ease. I don't like novels that repeat themselves, and this one did not. This was such a cute story and kept me cheering for our couple. This story kept a smile on my face, and it was such a shame it had to end! Fun, fast read for the end of Summer!
Gemma's appears to be living her best life. A great best friend, a great job as a radio producer, and a loving dog. On the other side, she has a strained relationship with her rock legend father and an ex-boyfriend who used her to get close to her father. She's in a dating rut, but all that will soon change when she bumps into Jack at a coffee shop. Unbeknownst to her, this isn't the first time they've met. They've met daily for months! Jack has memory of every Thursday they've been living, and he's convinced that getting Gemma to fall in love with him is the way to get out of the time loop. While Gemma begins to vaguely recollect what's been happening, neither Gemma nor Jack have any idea what's in store for them on this particular day.

This was a cute read and an interesting twist on a time-loop story, but I was disappointed by the lack of on-page looping.
A lot of the fun of time loop stories for me is to see the characters reliving the day in different ways and seeing what kind of wild shenanigans they can get up to when there are no long lasting consequences. Unfortunately, in "The Deja Glitch" all of the looping happens before the book begins (aside from the prologue) and we only get to see one full version of the day. Jack does reveal some details about previous versions, and it just made me wish I’d been able to see more of them!
I really liked Jack and Gemma as characters and I enjoyed seeing their stories play out, but the romance was a little off for me. I usually don’t mind a bit of insta-love or insta-lust in romance books, but this was a bit extreme. I could get on board with Jack being in love with Gemma considering how many times he relived the day and how much he was able to get to know about her, but Gemma only had one day one time. And A LOT happened in that day. Like more than is humanly possible a lot. And Jack wasn’t even there for a good portion of it. Which also made me wish this was a dual POV!
All of the side stories were a lot of fun and I loved how the ending of the time loop was handled. I haven’t seen it done this way before, and it’s the element that usually bothers me the most.
Overall I liked the characters and I had a good time reading it, but some of the details didn’t quite add up.
*Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Gemma’s day has not started off well, and she keeps feeling like she has lived this before. When she and Jack crash into each other at the coffee shop, ruining her favorite shirt, Gemma is even more frustrated. When Jack tells her that he has been stuck in a time loop for over 100 days trying to get her to remember him, she is confused and figures this man must be nuts. As she gives him a chance she realizes that there might be something worth remembering.
While I love a time loop story, what I really loved about this one was that we didn’t live the same day over and over. We heard that Jack had, and he explained what had happened on the other days, but we didn’t have to start at the beginning over and over. I loved Gemma and enjoyed seeing how much she grew over the day she didn’t remember living multiple times. I also loved that Jack never gave up on her remembering him and getting her to give him a chance. I found this one to be really fun and enjoyable!
This was a fun rom com stuck in a time loop.
I did think it was a bit wordy at times. The characters are cute and it would make a good beach read.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the early copy
