This was such a cute book! This reminded me of Groundhog Dates meets 50 First Dates in the best way!
Gemma is perfectly content with her life. She goes to her normal job, hangs out with her normal friends, and goes home to her normal dog. Until her life in thrown off balance when she meets Jack, a stranger who informs her that they've met before and can tell her things that happen before they do. His persistence leads Gemma on a journey to discover what's going on and why this stranger says he's met her several times before.
Ah! This was so cute! I always enjoy seeing how much action authors can pack into a short time span. In this case, everything that Gemma and Jack were able to accomplish might be a little unrealistic, but that's fiction for ya.
I loved Gemma's character growth with her relationship with her father and brother. On the other side, it was frustrating to see her still hold tight onto a small mishap that her 7 year old self did.
But, overall, this was a great YA read!
Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group Dutton for an eARC of this story! All opinions are my own
Something about time loop romances really gets me, they feel so cozy and easy to slip into. I found Gemma and Jack to be easy characters to root for but I wasn't super invested in them as their relationship developed, so while I enjoyed this, I'm not sure I'll return to it in the future.
If you are looking for a light hearted rom-com, this is the book for you! I love reading magical realism but never read a book with a time glitch/loop. I was worried at first, but it truly enjoyed it. Getting to know Jack and Gemma was so fun, I loved learning about them and seeing their character development.
Thank you NetGalley and Dutton for the opportunity.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advance copy of The Deja Glitch by Holly James in exchange for my honest review and opinion. This was an absolutely adorable Rom Com that keeps you turning page after page waiting to see what is going to happen next. Clear your schedule as once you start reading, you will not want to stop!!!
I am honestly so mad at myself for not reading this sooner because it was SO CUTE I COULD CRY.
Not only was the romance sweet and genuine and lovely, but Gemma’s friends and family had their own special brand of love that was so incredible and strong. The way she and Lila were so in tune, the strength and earnestness of her relationship with her brother was heartwarming.
And Jack!!! Is!!! A cinnamon roll who would die for her!!!! This poor boy needs like a solid month of vacation just to cope with the chaos of being trapped in the same day for so long. He’s so expressive and kind and just genuinely wants to be around and with and alongside Gemma wherever she goes. This man is s m i t t e n and we adore him.
3.5 ⭐ The Deja Glitch by Holly James is a contemporary romance novel centering around Gemma and Jack who get stuck in a time loop, having to repeat the same day over and over (a la Groundhog Day). Jack has been living the time loop for a few months now, running into Gemma - but she doesn't notice. One day Gemma wakes up, after kissing a guy at a party, and notices that things seem oddly familiar as if she can tell what people will say or how they will act. Then she meets Jack (again), and he tells her it's not really deja vu, but rather a time loop that has been going on for months. And when Jack and Gemma kissed the night before something triggered it for Gemma so that she can finally notice what's happening. Jack then tells her that he thinks that the key to ending the time loop is them falling in love - if Gemma can remember him tomorrow (a la 50 First Dates).
I really enjoyed this book. I think sometimes with time loop tropes, the story can get super repetitive and boring, but this wasn't like that. There were some parts that were predictable, but Gemma and Jack have great chemistry from the get-go, Jack is charming, and the side characters are fun. I think if you enjoy the time loop trope and sweet, closed-door romance stories you will enjoy The Deja Glitch.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest thoughts.
I’m obsessed! I’m normally not such a fan of clean romance books but this one was so perfect I couldn’t help but love it! Everything about Jack and Gemma was so perfect and I loved the way they fit together so perfectly! And all of the Friends references?! There isn’t anything that could have made it better!
3.5 stars, rounded up.
I enjoyed this cute rom-com. It was a light, fun read that was enjoyable the whole way through! I've never read a time loop troupe book before and I thoroughly enjoyed the way Holly James wrote this. That troupe could easily become super repetitive, but this wasn't at all. Everyday had similar aspects, but also showed how one small change in action, can change the entire day. I found every day fresh and I really enjoyed that!
I loved Jack immediately, I can't imagine how hard that was for him, reliving the same day over and over again, falling in love with someone who forgets you everyday. Gemma on the other hand, took me a little bit to warm up for her. I didn't dislike her, but it took some time to actually start liking her. I did really enjoy her character development, both with her relationship with Jack, but also with the other people in her life.
If you're looking for a cute, quick read (as long as you can look past this unbelievable time loop aspect), this is a good read for you!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Loved it! Super cute plot and loved the characters. I really enjoy magical realism and was a big fan of her writing!
Thank you NetGalley and Holly James!
I’m not sure how I feel about this one still. I liked it while I was reading it but I found it very forgettable. I did really like the characters and the story line.
This book was absolutely adorable. A lovely take on the time-loop/Groundhog Day story. I so enjoyed Jack and Gemma's dynamic and was rooting for them to make it the whole time. They sure do fit a lot into their one day, but I wasn't exactly clamoring for this story to be realistic. If you can suspend your disbelief and just soak up all the charm, there is lots to enjoy in this light, sweet story.
Jack saying "today was the best day of my life" after we find out he's lived this day with her 147 times? Swoon.
Thank you Dutton and NetGalley for my copy!
A time loop romance that definitely gets you routing for Gemma & Jack to find love & each other! Gemma is a radio producer who starts her day as she always does, but can't help but get that niggling feeling of Deja vu. Until she literally crashes into Jack who tells her they've been stuck in a time loop for months, and she has no memory of it! They set off on a unsteady, but increasingly urgent journey to find answers and hopefully fall in love along the way in an effort to finally break the loop! I really enjoyed the book and found the time loop still original. I really wanted them to find each other and could easily see this as a film!
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Romance with a touch of magic is extremely my niche. This is super cute and fun. Is it realistic? Absolutely not. But I really enjoyed it.
I really hate Groundhog Day books so I'm not sure why I even requested this, but it was pretty interesting. Great character building.
This book was super cute! I really enjoyed this author's take on a time warp romance. It didn't feel repetitive which I appreciated as a reader. I wish that it was written in first person POV, so that I could connect with the characters a little better. Overall, it was a fun, quick read that I would recommend to my followers!
If you’re a fan of 50 First Dates and Groundhog Day, then you’ll love The Deja Glitch by Holly James. This isn’t a mash-up of the movies, rather a delightful spin on the déjà vu concept. While there are similarities, this light-hearted romance by Holly James is by no means a copycat of either. ....https://booksuplift.com/the-deja-glitch/

Okay so if a guy I’m interested in doesn’t try to win back my affection by getting my favorite musician to dedicate a song to me at a sold out show at the Hollywood Bowl, I REALLY don’t want it!!! Jack Lincoln, you’ve set my standards high. High enough that I can almost forgive that you have a J name *shivers*.
There’s just something about a time-loop story that just speaks to me now that I’ve finally seen the Groundhog Day film. Though this doesn’t follow any of the same situations as Groundhog Day—besides the whole “stuck repeating the same day because I’m a misanthrope” thing—there’s still enough vibes there if you like that film and want to give this book a go!
I really did like the romance here; Jack was very kind and genuinely did care for Gemma. You could tell something was up when they met at the bar and he “guessed” her favorite drink, but hey, after 140+ days of getting to know your crush and her completely forgetting you exist, you gotta try playing to your strengths!
Gemma took a bit to warm up to Jack (understandably so, given that he’s known her for almost five months and she’s known him for, well, A DAY), but once she did, it was sweet to see her trust someone again after her last breakup.
The friendship is where this book really shined for me, though. Lila and Gemma were the definition of friendship goals. There was true bestie love there; no coddling, but a lot of supportive handholding and pushing each other (mainly Lila pushing Gemma) when the situation called for it, and when they knew the other would be better because of it. And it was also a nice surprise to see Gemma beginning to trust her father again and putting forth effort to talk to him and visit.
My only small qualms are: 1. there’s a chapter at the end told strictly through Jack’s POV. Since the story is told in third-person, I think it would’ve been interesting for it to be dual POV with the chapters switching between Gemma and Jack. It would’ve felt more congruous and helped visualize more of the events from the 140+ days they spent reliving the same day if we got his perspective. 2. the middle of the story DRAGGED!!! It was fast, super slow, faster, and then slow again.
Thank you Penguin Group Dutton and NetGalley for this eARC!!
The "time-loop trope" isn't my favorite, and this book taking place in a single day was a bit rushed. While it was a decent story, it won't be one that sticks with me. I also had a hard time feeling invested in the romance, which definitely took away from my enjoyment. If you enjoy this trope, it might be worth a read, but personally, it didn't resonate with my preferences.
I was worried this would be a take on the movie Groundhog Day, but it wasn't. This cute, slightly supernatural book features one day in the life of two people caught in a time loop and looking for the key to get out of it. It features lovable characters and a fun story line that does not take itself too seriously. Definitely recommend this fun rom-com that can be enjoyed in one day.
Thank you to Dutton and Netgalley for an advanced readers copy of this book for my honest review.
3.75 but rounding up for the review.
This book had several of my favorite things:
- man who falls first
- a supportive (female) bff who can also be the voice of reason
- grand gestures to profess their love
- women going after things they want
This book was so cute and fun. It was one of the first “time loop” books I’ve ever read and while everything literally happened in one day, I thought it was well done. The story was paced well for the most part and had interesting details.
My only gripe with the book is that it may have been a chapter & a half too long. Those final chapters were so repetitive, it’s kinda bored me. I think the epilogue does a great job of bringing the story back to life.
Overall a read I’d recommend if you’re looking for something light & romantic with no spice
