The Deja Glitch is so good. I read the whole thing in one sitting in like two hours. I could not put it down. The first chapter was amazing. That's what really got me hooked on this book. I started it at 9:30 pm, and I told myself I would stop staying up late to finish books, but when 10:30 pm hit, I knew I had to keep going. I finished at 11:45 pm and was left awestruck. The Deja Glitch is a time-loop, groundhog day storyline. I have only read one other book like this, but this was not like the other one. I find it so interesting that Jack remembers the day, but Gemma can't.
Speaking of Jack and Gemma, they are first introduced to us in what seems like a meet-cute. But we soon find out that this has in fact happened many times, 147 to be exact. Jack is in agony because he knows Gemma, but she can't for the life of her remember him. Until he tests his theory. Then, it seems like everything is going right. Something I really like about this book is that although it has a groundhog day feel, the book is only over the course of one day. Granted, it is a very long day, but I was enjoying the different adventures from Gemma's point of view. Gemma has a rough family history. She's not friendly with her father, and there is a deep emotional scar that she can't seem to get over. I'm a firm believer that bad characters do not deserve redemption arcs. But, Gemma's father is not a bad character. He did some bad things, but it seems like he's trying to be a better person. Nick, on the other hand, can die. I hated him.
Jack is probably the sweetest guy in the world. He has been living the same day for the last five months, and he can't even remember the real yesterday anymore. Gemma can't seem to remember the same day. Jack is obviously in love with Gemma, something she sort of picks up on early. I love the way he is so determined to make her fall in love with him. But somewhere deep down, Gemma knows that she knows him, even if it all seems crazy. I love Lila, Gemma's best friend, because she is exactly the type of ride or die best friend everyone deserves. Even on her own birthday, she is hell bent on helping Gemma win the man of her dreams. This book was so good, and I'm so happy that I was able to read this. Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for this ARC. I recommend this book heavily, so go pick up your copy as soon as it comes out!
I love a good Groundhog Day book, and I really loved the twist in this one - Gemma (our main character) isn’t the one in the loop, and Jack (our love interest) has one day to convince her to love him back before she forgets him again. Racing around LA to talk to psychics and scientists, accidentally ending up internet famous, giving impassioned speeches about feelings, and attending a rock concert - this book had a lot of movement and action for a rom com, which made it super fun and thrilling. Obviously you know how it’s gonna end, but it’s a good time getting there.
* I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this book. All thoughts are my own.
The Deja Glitch is a really sweet “time loop” romance book. I enjoyed reading Jack and Gemma’s story. He’s been stuck in a time loop for about 5 months trying to get Gemma to fall in love with him in order to get out of the time loop, and she’s just finding out! I’m torn between wanting them to go through a couple Thursdays together in the loop and loving that Gemma falls in love with Jack “in a day” (when really it’s been 5 months but she doesn’t really know). She has some deja vu throughout but doesn’t have all of her memories come back when they meet. Gemma also has an awesome friend named Lila, who was really funny and had Gemma’s back. Overall, the book was pretty light and entertaining.
Definitely recommend!
This is not my normal read but I loved it. This book really made me think what I would do if someone came to me saying that we were in a time loop. I would recommend this to anyone who loves rom coms and a little bit of fantasy.
OMG. I can’t wait for August to come and purchase this book for the physical copy! — if you want the lovey-dovey time loop story kind of thing with cute and angsty at the same time as an easy read?
”THIS BOOK, definitely for you!”
From the writing style, the storyline, the development of every single character in the book, and the issue this book holds! Oh dear, I approved them all! The author definitely gives the perfect amount on each problem from the storyline, from the very first page until the end of the epilogue chapter. Also, she had Ph.D. in psychology, that’s why I am liking his book this much 🤭
Jack, the new character who won my heart because of his patience! Then Lila in LA (I love the rhyme of it 😂) the best friend we all wanted in one package. Patrick is the little brother who is wiser and loves Gemma to the end of the world. Nigel Black, the father figure for this love story, and The parents, I admire you guys all!!
I warn you, this author truly will give you all the emotions in one package. My roommate is a witness to the reaction I had while reading this book. I adore her writing style and how she put everything in motion. Especially in the perfect amount of everything, not too much and not too short for my personal liking. No, there isn’t any smut or plot twist inside the storyline for me and I did not pay any attention to those departments. Well, this definitely a surprise, because I usually will get mad if I didn’t get any plot twist at all.
Next, what bothers me the most is, ”How did the loop start?” I get the answer from my personal understanding but I guess that’s how it was. Mrs. James set the time loop in motion because of that one particular reason for this love story. That makes sense of it tbh. Oh, no worries she added some scientific explanation about the time loop inside the plot which I appreciate the most.
Last, before I post my full review for this book on the release date; thank you NetGalley, for proving an eARC for this book. — dear Mrs. James, I’m looking forward to your other books in the future! and I think, I considered your book as one of the books that get me into my reading slump :)
Thank you NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for this ARC!
This book puts a twist on typical time loop stories, and it does it in such a unique way.
Gemma and Jack have been stuck in a 24-hour time loop, but the thing is, only he remembers that it's happening. For Gemma, the day repeats like it's never happened. However, Jack has a theory of how to break it, and it's for her to fall in love with him before the day is over. But how will she do that if she doesn't remember him?
The Deja Glitch was so cute, precious, and funny! It's different from regular time loop stories because we only see one loop. The rest of the book takes place in the span of an entire day, which Holly James did extremely well. And it is also not told in Jack's perspective, but told in Gemma's, which was surprising to me, but it worked. Usually time loop stories get boring for me because it's just a repeat with them changing little things to finally get the day right. So the way this was written was quite refreshing!
If you are a fan of romantic comedies, time loops, insta love, fun best friend, and family drama, definitely pick this up when it comes out!
The Deja Glitch releases on August 1, 2023! Happy Reading!
Wow! One of my favorite books I've read this year so far (I've read 27!)
Think 50 First Dates meets Ground Hogs Day in this beautiful, unique love story of two amazing characters.
And can I say that I fell in love with Jack...new Book Boyfriend Status!
It was fun going through the day, their stories expanding and unfolding into sp many layers!
Definitely loved this book!
I love a good time loop story. The Déjà Glitch did not disappoint! It was unique that it was from Gemma’s POV (someone not experiencing the time loop). And you got to see Jack (who was experiencing the time loop) try to explain and convince her that they were in a time loop.
If you love big declarations of love this book is perfect for you! There are so many swoon worthy moments and big grand gestures.
Seeing Gemma open up to Jack (more than she had done in the past loops) was amazing. Seeing her face the things and people she was too scared to do herself was so great and then chasing after what she truly wanted.
I loved seeing Jack from Gemma’s eyes. His determination was amazing- he never gave up. I liked the Gemma was able to help Jack with things going on in his life as it seems like he kinda forgot to live his life after he met her.
This was a sweet book that kept me going. While I knew what would happen at the ending, I loved the characters and how the story developed. A very fun book to read! Thanks for the advanced copy!
A delightful tale of time looping around until true love finally happens. Poor Jack has been living the same day over and over and over. The one constant is meeting Gemma everyday. Of course, she is unaware of it all until Jack clues her in. He is certain there is something about Gemma that is involved in his dilemma. He is determined to make Gemma believe, hard as it might be, until something, anything stops the loop.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book found it's target audience - a reader that loves some magical realism mixed with a groundhog day trope. Unfortunately, this particular novel did not bring anything novel to the genre.
We are immediately greeted with the details of our protagonist, Gemma's, life - all the details. Throughout the book we learn about Gemma's relationship with her best friend Lila, her father, her brother, her ex-boyfriend, her job and an aging rockstar - etc etc.
There is a love story woven somewhere in between - Jack has been stuck in a time loop for 5 months, and he's convinced Gemma is the key. All he has to do is make her fall in love with him in the span of one day. We have a meet-cute at a coffee shop, a visit to a mad professor (Back to the Future vibes for sure), a stop at a psychic's shop and many other shenangians in between - way too many.
I found myself skimming over parts, a rarity for me, until reaching the end of the predictable ending.
Thank you Netgalley for the preview.
I do actually think this was the cutest and most wholesome book I’ve read in awhile. It kept a smile on my face the whole time and I love that I got the chance to meet Gemma and Jack, plus Lila. I have a few minor things that I wish were different though. I wish we knew Jack? There isn’t much substance behind who Jack is, although I get that’s part of the plot. But we dive so hard into who Gemma is, and we don’t get the same for Jack. I loved the single Jack chapter, I do wish it was a dual POV book, I think that would’ve done wonders for my enjoyment. And I was hoping for a tiny bit more romance. This wasn’t even fade to black, other than the few kisses, the romance was conducted through words. Although those words were very swoon worthy.
*I was provided and ARC of this book through NetGalley, but these words and opinions are entirely my own. I thank NetGalley for the ARC*
First, I would like to say thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for a chance to provide me with an ARC for my honest review of this book.
I have been on a romance kick lately and this book seems right up my alley. Slightly (heavily?) jaded 20-something, time loops, and grand romantic gestures? I love this type of stuff. I started out really enjoying the story and the character building. Girl meets boy at bar, girl kisses boy, girl runs into boy next morning and feels like she knows him, chaos ensues.
Our hero, Jack, is insistent that he is stuck in a time loop that revolves around our heroine, Gemma. They have one day to fix this or else the Thursday is doomed to repeat itself again.
I liked the pace of the romance and the growth that each of our main characters had. However, I found Gemma to be a little exhausting halfway through the book and I made notes of her self-absorption. I know that we are meeting both of our characters at the worst points in their lives in recent history, but I would have liked a little less angst. Some of the problems felt contrived to keep our characters apart like (view spoiler). The book felt like it tried to tackle too many topics for the time that it was giving itself.
I would have enjoyed Gemma's characterization had it not been for the constant throwing her into a mood that made it seem like she was perfectly content being miserable for the rest of her life. The ending did save it from being a 2-star book.
Our hero makes it worth sticking it out for because that dedication and the sweet moments in between were well written.
This book was just what I needed. It had Groundhog Day vibes with 5o First Dates thrown in. Jack and Gemma are the MCs in this novel. Jack keeps reliving the same day over and over trying to get Gemma to fall in love with him to stop the time loop. He’s dated her about 150 times but it’s always the first time with her. This book is funny, sentimental and definitely entertaining! This is my first Holly James novel and can’t wait to read more!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 / 5
Jack and Gemma are currently stuck in a 24hour loop, but Jack seems to be the only one who is aware. Everyday, he is confronted with the fact that he has fallen for Gemma only to wake up everyday and realize she doesn’t remember him at all.
When Gemma runs into Jack at the coffee shop (unknowingly for the 147th time), she is struck with deja vu and not for the first time that morning. His reasoning behind this loop blows her mind and sets her on a crazy path for the rest of the day.
It’s a little Groundhog Day meets 50 First Dates with a side of Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.
This book was SO MUCH FUN!! It was fast paced and nearly impossible to put down. We get good back stories and great character development. Gemma’s relationship with her dad and everything she went though with her ex made her such a believable character. I loved her brother and the glimpses we get into their relationship was such a bonus. And her BFF Lila is fantastic!!
I highly recommend if you want a super fun and heartfelt story!
Thank you to NetGalley, Holly James and Penguin Group for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley, Holly James, and Penguin Group Dutton for the ARC of The Déjà Glitch.
The Déjà Glitch is a cute, heartwarming romance. It follows the time loop trope, but is different than other time loops I've read in that it tells the drawn out story of one day, rather than the loop resetting. It was an interesting take on the theme, but I actually ended up enjoying it more as we get to know both the characters more deeply, rather than having one reset each day.
Gemma is a relatable character and she's easy to enjoy. Her character growth throughout the book really made me like her more as the book went on. You see Gemma's confidence in herself grow and she begins to tackle some of the harder things she's been putting off. Jack is sweet, and I love the way his story is told. He makes a couple decisions I was questioning, but as the author explains his reasoning I really began to like him. The chemistry between Gemma and Jack was written well, and I enjoyed reading their story.
Overall this is a great romance to read if you enjoy time loops!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for this ARC! This was a super cute and funny time loop trope romance. One of my favorite tropes and this was done SO well! I don’t like when time loops play the same day over and over and make the story repetitive. I enjoyed getting to see one day with Jack and Gemma and learning about how many times they’ve met before.
This was my first read by Holly and I really enjoyed it and would recommend it!

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Penguin Random House in exchange for an honest review.
I thought this book was really charming. I entered thinking it might be a time loop book wherein we follow the characters over multiple rotations of the same day, but enjoyed the idea of it being focused on one day. It does seem like a lot of plot for a 14-hour day, but the author makes it work (although LA traffic would make it more challenging!). And for being contained in one day, Gemma makes a lot of progress.
The main thing I didn’t like was towards the end when the main characters give us the cliffs notes version of the story… It was going so well until then! I felt a bit annoyed by the summary of the book I just read. And maybe the TSA piece. Not sure why Raul would break federal laws because he has a crush on an influencer.
Aside from those minor things, I did like the book a lot. Nice spin on the time loop!
A great romcom book that you will fall in love with. This author definitely knows what they are doing, and I hope they keep doing it.
I loved this book!!! This is the second book by Holly James and I enjoyed it just as much if not more than her first. I was never bored reading the story between Gemma and Jack and didn’t want to put the book down! It’s a cute and also unique story that keeps you wanting to read on!
