Books with time loops are always interesting - and usually I either love them or hate them(nothing in between), so I'm glad to say I really liked The Deja Glitch by Holly James(comes out on 8/1)!❣️✨ It had an interesting premise that made me immediately request this ARC and what made this different from other time loop stories was the fact that the protagonist - Gemma is unaware that she's stuck in one and most of the story takes place over the course of one day(doesn't involve repeating the same day all over again) and I've got to say that this worked out well for me!
Gemma is a radio producer in LA, who has been wary of dating after a bad breakup and loves to stick to her routine and prefers hanging out with her dog, Rex and her best friend Lila. One day she crashes into a man at a cafe(quite literally while spilling coffee everywhere) and gets this feeling that she might have known him before. And he proceeds to tell her the wildest story that she doesn't believe in - that they've been reliving the same day about 147 times and he knows so many things about her that a complete stranger wouldn't(would be creepy if he wasn't cute lol😆). And though she finds this hard to believe at first, the stranger - Jack is able to predict many things before they've happened like her brother not being able to catch a flight to come back home, and a feeling of familiarity has Gemma putting down her skepticism for a while. Until he tells her that he's spent almost five months falling in love with her everyday and the reason she might remember some things now is because they had kissed each other the night before.🤣
I really liked the fact that Gemma didn't like Jack immediately but as she gets to know more about him and resolves some of the things that have her feeling stuck in life, I found myself liking Jack more and more just like her.
At first the focus is on Gemma as we see her tackle some things at work and learn more about her issues with her dad. Though Jack felt a little unfamiliar at first I'm glad that his only role wasn't to just be Gemma's love interest and try to break the time loop. We slowly get to find out more about him and how he might have forgotten some things from before as he kept repeating the same day(which explains why he seemed very focused on Gemma in the beginning). And I loved that contrast between Jack who has spent so many months getting closer to Gemmas while dealing with the fact that she would never remember it, and Gemma who feels surprised by this stranger but slowly starts believing in him. It was hard not to fall for Jack because he was so supportive and head over heels for Gemma 😍
I also loved Gemma's character development and how she became more confident and decided to take a leap of faith rather than playing it safe. It was so lovely to see her getting bolder over the course of the story! And just like her I was skeptical - how do you want me to believe that she'd fall in love with someone she doesn't know over the course of one day? But, the author makes it work! The connection between Gemma and Jack is powerful and it was so nice to see her falling for him. I also loved Gemma's influencer bff - Lila who has her back at all times and pushes her out of her comfort zone when needed! There were many hilarious moments that I enjoyed reading like the scene at the airport. It was a bit cheesy at times but had that rom-com feel to it(and as a rom-com fan I can't complain!).
The only thing that gave me mixed feelings was probably everyone around her almost guilt-tripping her into giving her father a second chance. I mean her dad's actions during her childhood had a huge impact on her and her worldview, so I don't think she should be pressured into forgiving him - especially when he hadn't taken many steps to reconcile with her. I did enjoy watching her mend her relationship with him though and it was nice to see him be on her side finally!
Overall, this was a great read from a new-to-me author that I enjoyed reading! Do give it a try if you're looking for a cute rom-com with a nice spin on the time loop trope!❣️✨
Gotta love a good time loop story!
This was a fun, quick read with likable characters and a fun storyline. This was my first Holly James book, and I will definitely be checking out her others!
Thank you to Penguin Group Dutton, NetGalley, and Holly James for the ARC. I will definitely be recommending this book to my friends!
loved, loved, loved this book! it’s such an interesting take on a groundhog day story romance with the progression of jack and gemma’s relationship being the anchor/‘key’ to time progressing as well as the catalyst to many beautiful moments of growth and change for other relationships in the lead’s lives.
i was very surprised with how realistically the story addressed family issues and overall feelings of unhappiness. multiple perspectives were presented from the characters and i found the reasoning behind choices made to be very eye opening when compared to some of my family issues. i didn’t expect to get helpful life advice from a romance book but ty lol
btw everything jack had to go through absolutely tore my heart out:,) i would go crazy if i had to repeat the same fucking day for months on end so thank god he got a happy ending eventually but i cant imagine the amount of trauma the whole situation probably caused him (and honestly gemma too)

This book was so cute! The time loop trope is one of my favorites - this story has its own unique twist on the “groundhogs day”. I loved how this story unraveled, the character development, the writing! A must read!
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC Review! I really wanted to like this but I just couldn’t get into it. I saw it through, but felt the theme of stuck in a time loop was so far fetched the book was not enjoyable. Maybe if the author revised it to give us more detail on Gemma and Jack before the “time loop” then it’d feel less creepy when Jack is totally fixated on her and she has no idea who he is. Maybe have the loop happen halfway into the novel where we really can see the two characters maybe even an enemies to lovers trope. It just felt forced and odd as is with the storyline and too far fetched. The storyline felt very surface level and I did not take a liking to the main character’s personality. She was selfish and unlikeable.
This time loop romance was such an enjoyable reading experience! Gemma and Jack collide one morning in the coffee shop, and deja vu hits Gemma hard. She knows she has never met this man before, so why is he so familiar? Jack knows that they have lived this day before and that they are stuck, and he spends his time trying to figure out how to get out of the time loop by changing small things through the day.
This version of a time loop was different, as the main character was unaware of the loop until Jack told her they were in one. I’ve read several books where the main character was in Jack’s shoes, but never one from the other perspective so that made this one unique and interesting! I couldn’t help but think how I would feel if someone told me I was living in a time loop and had lived the same day dozens of times, and I’m not sure I would have reacted as kindly as Gemma. It is an interesting concept!
Gemma and Jack have instant chemistry on this morning, and Gemma tries very hard to understand what is happening but also go about her daily business of working and going to her best friend’s birthday party. I adored Lila, Gemma’s best friend and influencer extraordinaire. She had Gemma’s back in every way and added some comic relief throughout the story. I could see this book easily translating to a movie screen, so many parts of it would be fun and magical to see!
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Group Dutton for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Big thank you NetGalley and to the publisher for the chance to review this book pre-release. This was an insanely cute rom-com. I'm not normally one for insta-love and timeloop stories can get a bit tiresome but Holly James did such a great job blending the two into a great novel that made me smile the entire time I was reading it. I love the characters, nothing felt redundant, and I didn't want to put it down! I will definitely be looking forward to more works by the author. A more formal review will be available on my IG/TikTok and Goodreads.
4.0 stars!
I actually really enjoyed this. Which is surpising considering I’m not a big fan of time loops. Like Jack said, they’re predictable. And although this one was pretty simple in terms of surprises, I still really enjoyed it! I really liked Jacks. He was so sweet. He has my entire heart.
Gemma was okay. I’m used to not liking the female main characters, but she grew on me as the story went on!
This was a cute, easy romcom that i’d recommend!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a cute time loop, rom com. I really related to some of Gemma’s family issues. Jack was great, I couldn’t imagine having to convince the person I love that they love me back, in 1 day. Lia, the best friend was great! Thank you NetGalley for the ARC.
A time-loop romance? I knew I had to read this right away. From the first page, I was already sucked into it. It’s a great book to read for a cozy weekend or when you need to relax. It’s a soft, fluffy, and fast read that leaves you feeling happy.
Jack and Gemma’s story was so sweet. The character development was great, and I loved the chemistry between Jack and Gemma. I normally dislike insta-love tropes, but I didn’t feel their romance was rushed at all. The book was told from Gemma’s point of view, although it’s Jack who has been stuck in a time loop. He had a long time to develop feelings for Gemma and it makes a huge difference. How the story ties together was well done and it didn’t leave any plot holes. Overall, I would recommend this to others!
Normally when someone runs into you and spills coffee all over your favorite shirt, they apologize. They don't say that you are the key to breaking them out of a time loop! But in Déjà Glitch, that is exactly what happens!
When I first read the description about a guy stuck in a time loop for 24-hours and has to convince the main girl to fall for him, I was apprehensive. The trope of being stuck in a loop is one that has been done many times before with not much success, but I was pleasantly surprised with Déjà Glitch! They even make fun of the clichéd nature in the book that feels like the author is giving the readers a side-wink. The plot is not monotonous. As the reader, we weren't on the journey of Jack who is stuck in the loop, but we see the perspective of Gemma, who is unaware that she is the center of Jack's time malady. We follow one day from start to end as they try and end the loop, which I found refreshing and wholly entertaining.
Not only does the plot have a unique take on an age-old trope, the characters are endearing! You find yourself rooting for Jack, even though he comes off as insane at some points. Who would think that a guy who knows every detail about you is just your soulmate and not your stalker? Not most! Gemma also brought an interesting complexity to the story. She wasn't just there to solve Jack's problem, but she has her own ghosts that she must confront.
The romance element was also very adorable! Even though the story takes place over the course of the day, it didn't feel like one of those unbelievable insta-love stories. It felt like a love that would last the age of time. The characters had good chemistry, even if they talked just a tad too much about feeling a magical "zing" every time they touched.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to all who love a good time loop and feel-good romance. It felt like the perfect read at the start of the new year! As you all know, what better way to start fresh than to relive the same day over and over?
This book drew me in from the first page. A girl who would rather stay in bed and read than go out on a weeknight? I was able to relate to this character so much. I was a little skeptical at first about the plot line, because it was so far out there and not the normal them I usually read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Jack was perfect! Gemma and Lila’s relationship was so good. Even the storyline between Gemma and her father was really good. Solid story!
Who doesn't love a good time loop?! Holly James did an excellent job with keeping the story going and not getting stale. I don't know what I loved most, the friendship between Gemma and Lila or how hard Jack tries to get Gemma. I was thinking the story would be told from the one stuck in the loop (Jack) but instead it is told from the perspective of Gemma as she tries to understand what is happening. While I really enjoyed this book I think I would have loved it more if we got to go through a few more loops. We only experience one day whereas Jack has been through this same day for 5 months now.
4/5 stars
Thank you to NetGalley for the digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
I received an advanced copy of this book on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review … and let me say, I loved it! I was in the mood for a lil rom com book and this was the perfect choice.
Gemma and Jack are stuck in a time loop - yes it’s a time loop love story / but the time loop doesn’t consume the whole story. most of the book takes place on the same day.
there’s a love story, friendship, some family drama and more along the way. Gemma’s character grows a lot throughout the book and i really enjoyed reading about her, her relationships, and the decisions she had to make.
the book is written with the perfect amount of descriptiveness to me, too! it flowed so easy and i felt like i was floating through the story like a fly on the wall (in the best way). yes it was predictable at times (what rom com isn’t) but if you’re in the mood for the book equivalent of a netflix rom com - this is your book! i will definitely be buying a copy when it’s released.
This one was great. I really enjoyed the trope and the author's fresh take on it. I loved the two main characters adn will definitely be recommending this one to my friends!
i can never resist a story with any sort of time loop or time jump (the time traveler's wife, anybody?! one of my go to stories for a solid cry!), so i knew i had to request this one as soon as i saw it. it definitely didn't disappoint. like some other reviewers mentioned, i would've loved to see another loop or two after gemma understood what was happening, but the fullness of time we did see also felt really good. i'll be recommending this one!
I'd like to thank NetGalley and Penguin group Dutton for sending me this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Gotta love a classic time loop. Luckily for me, this book had pop up after pop up, plot twist after plot twist. I was anxiously awaiting for yet another not so popular character to show up and make Gemma's day even crazier.
I thought this was such a cute rom com! The story was predictable, but also very surprising. I mean of course we know the main characters will end up together BUT the journey of it all is what makes or break a book and this plot line had me hooked. I adored Gemma and Jack. They were adorable and hilarious to me. Jack clearly had the right motives, but poor execution at times. We forgive him because he gives off puppy vibes. Lila was someone else I absolutely adored. She is who I strive to be and you can tell she has Gemma's best interests at heart.
I also loved how the author incorporated not just their love story, but also the family drama, the ex drama, work drama AND the time loop all in one. I loved how this book was classic rom com with barely any spice. It was refreshing and fun.
Thanks to NetGalley for this ARC of The Deja Glitch. I was skeptical of this book because of the premise of a time loop. I didn’t like Groundhog Day and the whole loop trope is not my favorite. But I was so wrong. This book is wonderful! The main character, Gemma, is well developed and the author shows the effects of her childhood on her in present day. Jack is a character you can’t help loving and rooting for, and Lila is a funny and do or die best friend. The time loop works well here and the author doesn’t take you through endless same scenes. They are all different and move the story toward its conclusion successfully. I read this very fast and enjoyed all of it! I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you NetGalley!
It was such a fun book! It had a unique synopsis and i was really excited about it and it didn’t disappoint!
Such a fun, easy read. I finished in couple of hours and had one too many laughs during reading it.
I recommend to everyone who liked the cover.
Thank you netgalley for the arc in exchange for a fair and honest review.
The premise of this book - boy stuck in a time loop - girl is part of the reason for the time loop - boy and girl must work together to figure out time loop.
Book was fun. A nice quick and light read. Held my interest.
I definitely recommend it.
