Her First Child was a great read by Sheryl Browne. Eve is a new mother who is overwhelmed with love her for her son, Kai. She hasn't seen her mother heartless mother Lydia in years, and has never told anyone about what really happened the night her baby brother died. In the dead of the night her heart pounds as she hears her mothers voice on the other end. She reluctantly agrees to let her mother visit. One early morning she has to make an emergency call from her son's bedroom and she curses for allowing her mother back into her life. Eve questions why Lydia was in her son's bedroom during the night. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
Audio version of this book 📚- A good storyline though a little slow in places which found my mind wandering a bit, but then looking a of twist and turns that you don’t see coming !
Narrator was really good in that she differentiated between characters voices and was easy to listen to.
Eve and her husband, Dom are proud parents to their baby, Kai. Eve is very protective of him and vows she will not be like her mother. Eve grew up tiptoeing around the anger, abuse and heavy mood in her home. If it wasn't for her best friend Chloe she wouldn't have been able to stand it. Her baby brother died when she was young and that seems to be the reason she is so overprotective. When her mother, Lydia calls and says she is coming, things take a turn. When Lydia arrives, Eve is reminded of her horrific childhood and is fearful for her son. Dom can't understand why Eve is acting strangely and it is soon obvious that she has been keeping secrets from him and is concerned about what her mother might tell him. Is Kai safe with her mother around? What is going on between Chloe and Dom?
This story is told through the POV's of Eve, Chloe and Lydia. Each provides insight into the present and the past in dual timelines. As the story progresses, it is obvious to me that we are dealing with unreliable narrators. Everyone seems to have secrets and each character wants something different. There is domestic violence in the past timelines and some infidelity as well. As I read, I thought I had the story all figured out, but with Sheryl Browne, I should have known better. With unlikable characters, twists and turns, lies and secrets, I was left feeling shocked as the final reveal came. I enjoyed this book and the narration by Tamsin Kennard. My complaint about the audiobook is that with multiple POVs it is nice to have more than one narrator to differentiate the narrators. She really didn't give the characters individual voices, but did add expression and emotion to the story. If you enjoy a good psychological thriller, then I recommend you pick this one up.
A fantastic read. I have read a few books by Sheryl Browne and they have always been riveting reads and kept me engaged all the way through.
Definitely recommended
The book's intriguing premise was 5-star:
A perfect mother. A loving daughter. A secret that could destroy them both.
Unfortunately, the book's execution was flawed.
Too many characters, too little time.
As a result, the book's characters were superficial and lacked the strong character development that I was seeking.
Told from multiple POVs in dual timelines, the book was difficult to follow at times.
And, finally, I had issues with the book's pacing.
I am not a fan of "slow burn" and this book was definitely too S-L-O-W for my fastidious palate.
I listened to the audiobook read by Tamsin Kennard. Since the book was told from multiple POVs in different timelines, the book would have strongly benefited from multiple narrators.
Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
2 stars rounded up.
A chilling tale of just how easy it is to misread situations and people.
Well written and orated wonderfully.
Thoroughly recommend this audio book
Thank you NetGalley for the audio copy in exchange for a honest review. Eve has a baby son Kai with her husband Dom. When her Mum Lydia comes back into her life Eve is reminded of her own tragic childhood and fears for her sons safety. Her best friend Chloe lives close by and has always been there for her. This thriller is full of secrets and lies that kept me gripped from the beginning.
I just found this in my llist of did not download and had never seen it come up in my feed of new books on here. My apologies as I don't blow off audiobooks provided to me. Thanks for trying NetGalley, author, etc. Happy new Year.
This is a review of the audio book.
I enjoyed the book but it didnt grab me - the characters were too unlikeable and the ending felt very rushed.
With respect to the narration, she did a really good job but really do wish there was another narrator as there were so many different POVs and the women seemed to mould into each other.
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
This was my first book by Sheryl Browne, but it will not be my last! Her First Child is a gripping thriller.
Eve and Chloe have been best friends since childhood, both married now. Eve has a child named Kai and is overprotective of him, with good reason, which will be revealed as the story goes on. Written in dual timelines and POV, this story had me on the edge of my seat with twists and turns. Lies, jealousy, and a mother who comes to visit, even though she is not wanted, had me needing to find the answers. What I found was an ending that I was not expecting. I definitely recommend this book for those that like thrillers that you cannot put down!
Thank you Netgallery for the ARC of this book.
Loved this read!
Utterly brilliant and a must read for fans of ‘Behind Her Eyes’.
I’ve never read this author before but I will certainly be following with interest.
Hugely recommended and so thrilling. Written with such incredible fluidity.
For audio book listeners the narration is sublime by Tamsin Kennard.
Tell everyone about this book!
There is a lot going on in this story. Three narrators alternate between the past and present building up a twisted tale. At times I was a bit confused and I think this story would have been better for me to read versus listen to (l listen when I drive so not fully focused 🤦♀️). That aside, the narrator did an excellent job.
The twists are plentiful. The characters were awful (written well, just bad people). The ending was ambiguous which isn’t a favorite of mine. Overall, an entertaining listen.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Bookouture for a copy in exchange for a review.
This is a suspense and intrigue filled book that kept my attention from the start with a narrator that was great and really brought the story and the characters to life.
With multiple characters and a story that is told over two timelines, this is a book that could easily get away from you but the author cleverly keeps you on track and on your toes.
I have to admit that the characters aren't particularly likeable but they are very interesting and complex so I don't think it matters too much with this book and it adds to the intrigue and keeps you guessing to the end.
This is the first book by Sheryl Browne I have read and it certainly won't be the last and I want to thank Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for enabling me to listen and share my thoughts of Her First Child.
I really like Sheryl Browne's style. This was fast-paced and very gripping from the get-go. I loved the pace at which the characters were developed and I especially loved that I felt I couldn't trust anyone and wasn't sure who to believe. This was very mysterious and really built up the tension to make my mind wonder what could happen next. I thought the ending was very clever and I did not see the ending reveals coming at all. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this psychological thriller, and the narrator was fantastic.
The story is about a woman called Eve and her family, and how the relationship with her Mum has been since she was a little girl. It is full of secrets and twists, which surprised me, especially the big reveal, which I hadn't guessed! This is the type of book where you just have to read on to find out what happens next, and then you get a big shock. Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
This was a good book but not one that I was blown away by. It was a little slow in places and I felt that there were questions that were left unanswered. I still don't know who the attacker was? The ending was a little confusing. I enjoyed the dual timeline and the parts from the main characters childhood and I could empathise with the neglect she felt and the difficult relationship with her parents. The story kept me guessing on what happened to the baby and who was responsible and I liked the friction between the friends and the husband. I just wished the ending was tied up a bit more neatly and events explained but that's probably just personal choice.
A great psychological thriller with twists you won’t see coming! Secrets can only stay hidden for soo long before they come out. Eve is loving her life as a new mom and successful career as a physician. When her mom Lydia comes back into the picture without warning, Eve isn’t sure how to keep the secrets buried in the past. When ailments start happening to her new baby boy the same as what happened to her baby brother in the past she is not sure how to handle it all. Who is the one with the biggest secret?!
This book started off well but unfortunately I lost it a bit and didn’t really understand the ending which was a shame.
Secrets, secrets and more secrets. That sums it up pretty well. There are multiple narrators, the women, in dual timelines, telling the story of these unlikable characters doing some not so nice things. I was trying to piece together what was up and what might be the common thread in the eerily similar situations. I should point out that while I didn’t much like the characters I did want to know what happened and who, if anyone, was behind the issues with the children. I find I do not need to like the characters in order to enjoy the book, especially a thriller.
Through a few twists and turns, and a couple of wrong guesses, the end was not where I thought we were headed. This one kept me on my toes.
If you like a domestic thrillers with secrets galore, you’ll love this one.
This book started off well but then i began to lose interest. Too many characters and timelines were introduced at once and I got confused. I struggled to finish this book as by the end I just didn’t care. I felt it was a bit all over the place and I didn’t understand the ending.
