Interesting premise but fell flat for me and was a struggle to get though. The story was just blah and had me pausing often
I thought this would be more of a mystery, but it was a well written family drama. I love a good family reunion summer trope! I enjoyed this.
This year the annual summer retreat at the family home in Cape Cod is supposed to be a joyous occasion with the youngest daughter's wedding. As the family gathers, each bringing their own personal problems they hope to have time to think and work through during this time, the family matriarch, Tish, arrives with a special gift of her own. After delivering the bombshell of inheritance, each family member retreats to deal with this latest blow that feels more like a betrayal.
Good book featuring family dynamics and people's motives and beliefs that can lead to decisions that are hard for others to understand. This book also addresses the question of what makes a "real" family.
On a personal level, I was expecting a more domestic thriller type book, but instead this was a more family drama/adult literature genre. It made me think of personal family drama and connections and how the choices each family member makes can impact others even when those decision are made with the best of intentions.
Thank you so much to the publisher for an advanced copy of this book. I enjoyed The Darlings for the most part. It was a bit slow at first and throughout the book. I was hoping for a little more from it. It was mostly a lot of family situations that weren't interesting. I look forward to the author's next work.
Such a sweet ending to a familial drama. A lot of things I was personally able to relate to which I think made it redeemable. It felt slow at times but all over worth the three stars.
I found Hannah McKinnon's novel, The Darlings, to be a refreshing and enjoyable read. It is a character driven novel where generations of the Darling family are destined to repeat the same mistakes unless they can come together and share their true emotions and thoughts with each other. Reader beware, the journey each woman must go through was heavier than the breezy cover evokes. That seems to be a bit of a mismatch.
The Darlings is told through the perspectives of three generations of women, Tish, Cora, and Andi, each battling their own biases and life altering events. This plot has a little of everything- family drama, hidden secrets, sibling dynamics, and a splash of summer sun.
Thank you to NetGalley, Atria Books, and Emily Bestler Books for the chance to read this book,
I enjoyed this story of 3 generations of strong women, all fighting to keep a hold on their own legacy. The Cape Cod setting was beautifully incorporated, and it was a very moving story that started with a bang, and then settled into more of an exciting lull.
Honestly, I really felt like the plot was so spindles to other books I have recently read. I wanted something fresh with a mean girls twist, but this fell short for me. On to the next book on my list.
I loved delving into three generations of Darlings....what an intricate web of mystery and discovery.
Thanks so much for this book.
Intrigue and family dynamics. Tish Darling has decided to come back to the family's summer home after years away... and make a stunning announcement about the inheritance of the home.
Written from the POV of the family members, you can see how grief and loss travel through generations.
I enjoyed this one! The summer vibes and feels were lovely. Quite a bit of family drama but also cool to see the interesting ways of how love happens. I enjoyed this read and it kept me yearning for more! Loved it and the ending was wrapped up neatly.
I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway. All of the statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of The Darlings by Hannah McKinnon.
I received an advance copy of The Darlings by Hannah McKinnon from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review and opinion. I was so excited to read this after reading the description of this book. Let's say, I was not the least bit disappointed. This book was a fantastic read and I can't wait to read more by this author in the future.
Pretty little cover and a fun beach red with the setting proving to be a character in itself. There are family dynamics at play and though the story can get repetitive, it's a quick and enjoyable read to pack in your beach bag.
Family drama? Yes, please!
While I don’t love drama in my own family, I love reading about it in books! The Darlings by Hannah McKinnon is filled with multi-generational drama, told from multiple POV’s. We get all sides of every situation and also get to intimately know the women from 3 generations of the Darling family.
The Darlings reminds us how the things that happen in our past can continue to affect our actions in the present. The characters in the book all find different ways to move forward from past hurts and secrets, but buried secrets always have a way of coming out later (at least in juicy fiction books they do!).
Of course, one of my favorite parts of this book was the new romance for one of the characters! Books are always made a little bit better for me when there’s at least a hint of romance somewhere along the way. 😉
I enjoyed the way the author showcased how it can be both lovely to be so intertwined with our families, but also how difficult it can be to make choices that will affect the people you love. We all need to make the best decisions for ourselves but knowing that our decisions affect others makes deciding really hard sometimes!
If you’re looking for a quick book filled with juicy drama this one is perfect!
The Darlings is a family drama that pulled me in quickly and held me close until the end. The characters were so well- developed, I was invested in their futures.
I received this book from NetGalley in advance in exchange for an honest review. This was an entertaining summer read that could be read in just a few sittings. Enjoyed!
Enjoyable beach read about three different generations of the Darling family, and the ties and secrets that bind them. I was especially interested to read this book because it is set in Chatham, and that's where I grew up. It was fun to read and recognize the restaurants and places mentioned.
Fans of Elin Hilderbrand will enjoy this family drama and the beach setting.
Thank you Netgalley and Atria Books for the ARC!
I really enjoyed this book — especially in the beginning — although I did feel it started to drag a bit at the end. That said, the writing and characters were compelling, and I was very much sucked in to this family and their world. It reminded me a lot of Elin Hilderbrand.
An enjoyable beach read. I love books that are set on the East Coast, something about the description of the wild beaches and water that draw me to the stories. This story gave you drama, family angst, love, and new romance all within its pages. This was a new author for me, but I will be looking forward to reading more of her work.
