After taking so long off the series, I should have reread it before starting this book. It was hard to connect to the characters after years apart. Same quality writing, same fun though.
Thanks to Netgalley for providing an arc of this book.
The Night Angel is back! I remember reading the original series and was so enthralled with how great the story and the world was. I was so excited to be back, but was not sure what to expect after reading Brent Weeks's other series.
Well, the story is quite different from what I remember. It's a night angel for the modern world, full of self-doubt and with internal struggles.
The book was well written and the story solid, but I wasn't as invested as the original series and the story didn't resonate with me.
Would I recommend it? Well, I wouldn't not recommend it, but overall, it didn't fit with me. YMMV!
I was totally shocked when I saw a new Night Angel book was coming out. After all it’s been well over a decade since the last Night Angel book released. It’s also been nearly a decade since I last read the original trilogy (After finishing this book I am now seriously thinking of doing a re-read of that trilogy very soon. Not that you necessarily have to have read them to enjoy this one). Since I read this on my e-reader I’m not sure of the exact number of pages the print version will be, but this is one massive tale, as you’d expect from an epic fantasy. I seem to remember the previous books being at least 650 pages, and I think this one is even longer. That being said, Brent pulled me right in with this line from the opening paragraph: ‘If he doesn’t move in the next three minutes, this kid has to die.’ Ah, the delightfully gray morality of an assassin. I don’t want to spoil the story, but I will say that if you enjoyed the original trilogy, you’re more than likely going to enjoy this one as well. It had everything I’ve come to expect from a Night Angel book. There is a complex story, plenty of action, intrigue, and magic. It’s a triumphant return, though I’ll admit I think it could have been trimmed a little and still been just as good. Though it was so cool to see Kylar back in action that of course you won’t hear me complain if Brent decides he wants to make the next one even longer, lol. Thanks so much to Orbit Books and NetGalley for giving me the chance to read and review an ARC of Night Angel Nemesis.
Review in progress and to come.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
Brent Weeks does it again. Is it surprising? No it’s not. He keeps bringing the heat, and I keep buying it, as should you. It’s good.

Thanks so much to Brent weeks and Net galley for a great fantasy book that has got me hypes to go back read books I should have read un the 1st place.
The Night Angel series takes place among the greats lies of lock Lamora, and more...I immensely enjoyed the story l, which while it takes place in the same world it's a story if it's own...
The story although dominated by the master assassin, Kyler Stern, has ton of unique magic in the form of Magus, wytches, and especially the Ka'Kari symbiotic suite that allows for superhuman feats by the wearer...
The story and the characters are deep and well thought out. They are fleshed out to seem real and not just stage props...I will definitely read all I can by weeks...
I received this eARC from Netgalley.com in exchange for an unbiased review.
**Spoilers Ahead**
Author Brent Weeks has taken years, but he has finally returned to the world of Night Angel. Most of NA's story can be found in the previous three books. This tale picks up shortly after where the last book ended.
I'm not sure how to express what I think about this story, so I'm just going to throw out my thoughts about it all...so it might sound confusing. I truly enjoyed the Night Angel series many years ago when I first came across them. I was happy I was able to get all three at the same time, so would not have to spend time waiting for 'the next book'. That trilogy ended well, and didn't leave a cliff-hanger for future novels. I was excited to see Weeks had decided to come back to this story world with a new tale(s). The further into the story I got, I started getting an unhappy feeling about where this tale was going. Throughout there is much internal conversation of the main character as to ethics, morals, and decisions he has made. In some places it was fairly long-winded and I would skim to get ahead of the wordiness. Otherwise the story flowed well, and I was happy, until the last few sections.
I didn't like how it ended. There wasn't any finalization, no cliff-hanger, just .. .the story ended. Does that mean the end of this series? I see some possibilities of how the tale could continue - Spin-off to Vi and her issues with the Chantry. It is alluded that Kylar was seeking to end his mortal life, but it was never confirmed, so maybe something happened there that will bring him back around. There is something about the babe, Caeden, one of the King's twin sons, that the story could be more focused there. And whatever did happen to the other twin? I don't remember reading anything happening to him, just that the twins were abducted, yet separately.
It was a lengthy novel to read, and took me several attempts - as I said there were some very wordy sections. In an afterword, Weeks says that he was challenged by another author (Scalzi) to keep it under 125K words, but the end result was still near 325K. So yeah, very wordy. But because I loved returning to the story, I will give it a four star rating.
How to describe this book..... I believe the focal point should be one word: Masterpiece.
I was overjoyed to see a continuation of the world of Midcyru, Weeks did indeed power level up so to speak, He took the Night Angel series to a whole other level that puts him directly up there with the current fantasy literature titans of the past 20 or so years (and frankly surpasses quite a few of them). To see the continuing development of Kylar was as fascinating as it was sad.I am greatly looking forward to see where this is going,Alot of great characters introduced or revisited in this book,i really cannot overstate that the author has outdone himself, kudos to Mr.Weeks.I urge anyone reading this if they are a fan of fantasy or actually no just literature in general to read this week, you will not be disappointed i assure you.
p.s more of the Grandmaster please
I requested a digital copy in order to sample the prose on my phone (since I don't have a eReader) before requesting a physical copy for review. My review will be based on the physical ARC I read (if I qualify)
Synopsis:
Kylar Stern, who suffered greatly during the war, is now in a broken and solitary state. He has made a decision to never kill again, but he faces a predicament where he cannot allow a particular murderer to go unpunished due to an impending amnesty. Kylar believes this will be his last mission, one final task to bring closure to his past life.
However, Kylar’s only true friend, the High King Logan Gyre, requires his assistance. Logan needs Kylar to protect his twin sons, his newly formed kingdom, and secure a powerful magical object that surfaced after the war. There are rumors that a ka’kari may be found, which attracts both old and new foes seeking its power. Kylar understands that ancient magic should only be entrusted to those who can be relied upon.
Kylar hopes to accomplish the task without resorting to murder. This is not an assassination, but a daring theft. Nonetheless, some missions are too challenging for a clear conscience, and some adversaries are too formidable, leaving no choice but to operate in secrecy.
Thoughts:
I never even for a second thought Brent Weeks would go back to The Night Angel series for some reason. Although there were some loose ends in Beyond the Shadows, I felt that the trilogy had a satisfying conclusion. Nevertheless, as an ardent follower of The Night Angel series, especially Kylar Stern and Vi (be still my beating heart!), I am elated that Weeks has chosen to expand on the series.
In the book acknowledgements Weeks mentions when he finished writing Beyond The Shadows he wasn’t sure whether he was skillful enough to add more to The Night Angel world and thought of revisiting it once he gained more writing experience. I don’t believe Weeks ever was a bad or a weak writer. His plots were always solid, the storylines sublime and world building simply out of this world. But were there problems with The Night Angel series in the first three installments? Yes. Like most high or epic fantasy writers his target audience was male and almost all his female characters were oversexualized. There were some deeply cringey moments which actually carried in to The Lightbringer series and that was the reason I gave up on that series after reading the first book only. HOWEVER, I am extremely happy to say that Weeks indeed has improved so much when it comes to addressing the aforementioned issues with the first three books. I never had a single moment of ‘oh not this again!’ while reading The Night Angel Nemesis. Weeks was thoughtful and navigated the female characters narratives with apt care and respect. So as a female high/epic fantasy reader I really appreciated this effort on his part.
Trust me when I say there are some pleasant surprises for The Night Angel fans in this installment. At first you are going to be a bit confused and then you are going to go ‘That’s just genius!’. Oh and there’s going to be a perspective change as well. Which, I have to say, was brilliantly executed. As is typical of Brent Weeks’ writing, the plot progression is complex and multi-layered, while his characters possess nuanced moral identities that exist in shades of grey which made it truly a joy to read this book.
I particularly enjoyed Skylar’s evolved thought process in The Night Angel Nemesis. He was vulnerable, relatable and was struggling to find and separate himself from The Night Angel persona. There were so many heart breaking moments where Weeks delved into Skylar’s inner monologues which made you love his character more. In this book Vi is given a front seat, which she deserves, and her character is developed brilliantly, I fell in love with her all over again. Ah, I can’t say anything more without giving away spoilers, so let me just say there is a new MVP and you are going to absolutely love them. They are sarcastic, funny, distant, chaotic but surprisingly at times very empathetic as well.
All in all, I truly enjoyed reading The Night Angel Nemesis and getting to dive back into The Night Angel world with some of my beloved characters and Mr. Weeks you deserve all five stars I am giving you, especially since I rated you extremely poor in The Light Bringer series. You did well! Extremely excited about the installments to come! My sincere thanks to Brent Weeks and Orbit books for providing me this advanced reader copy.
Night Angel Nemesis is book 4 in the Night Angel series by Brent Weeks.
Now I must read book 1-3 because this story was fire.
Excellent story, great characters and really good world building
This was a dark fantasy full of intrigue, a completely relatable anti-hero and action for days. I had the best time devouring this book.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
Thank You NetGalley and Orbit for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this amazing eARC!
This book corrects the series' biggest flaw: the fact that there were only three books. Weeks has written a 4th and I hope will continue to write more. It's a series and world that deserves continuation.
This book was gripping from start to finish. Pick up the first three, then give this one a read.
Author Brent Weeks has managed to out-write himself with this new installment of the Night Angel series. Have you seen the first three books combined in the hardcover called “Night Angel Trilogy 10th Anniversary Edition”? It’s jaw-dropping ebony pages are beautiful, and hundreds of dollars. What makes this series so special? Just ask any of the many fans - the richly intense world and character building that flows into “Night Angel Nemesis”, the fourth installment has a huge following. I have many who have recommended his books to me.
The personality of Brent Weeks shines through into his new book. I devoured the hunt and epic adventures that assassin Kylar Stern, broken and alone, must live through. Assassination is an art, and an art we can’t help obsessing over in fiction. I already pre-ordered this book for my library. I can’t wait to start talking more about Brent Weeks. Five of five terrific stars!
Thank you to Orbit Books/Hachette Book Group via NetGalley for the opportunity to review this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Interesting continuation of this series only many years later. I've always appreciated Weeks' previous series and I feel like this is a great beginning of a new chapter in this universe. Well-written, lots of betrayal and skullduggery, and that trademark dialogue that makes Weeks' books so snarky and fun to read. I enjoyed this a lot and will have further to say over on the blog very soon!
