I… don’t think I like this one. And I did like the first one! So maybe if you didn’t like the first one you’ll like this one and vice versa idk!!
Dual timelines and dual POV had be so confused. What was happening when?? I had no idea. Really thought some past stuff timing was happening in the present. All that really threw me and took me out of the story. I also did not believe those two would end up together for real. I didn’t get any relationship growth, only hatred. And maybe that’s cause I was confused with timelines? Totally could be true.
So anyways, this wasn’t for me
DNF at 43%. I just don't care about these characters to finish this book. The tension between the MCs doesn't make me hope they'll get back together after "the big misunderstanding." They just seem emotionally immature for not either moving on or communicating in any way.
Thanks to Ballentine and Netgalley for this advanced copy!
I really loved Ava Wilder's first book and it is so great to see her hit it out of the park for her second novel. Will They or Won't They is so tender and funny and delightful. It's an lovers to enemies to lovers novel where the main characters actually seem to hate each other, but we all know they are in love from the beginning. Watching Lilah and Shane work through things and come back together was fun and it never felt like the anger was forced, nor was the reconciliation. Lilah's surprise move towards the end felt a little much, but I loved the twist at the end. I would probably never watch the show they are both on (ok maybe I would) but I would spend more time with these characters for sure. Wilder really has a way of stripping away emotions to make them raw but not forced, letting the characters be honest with themselves and the reader at just the right pace.
Such a great story, I can't wait for her next one!
ava wilder does it again! one thing i've loved about both of her books has been the complexity of her characters and by extension, their conflicts. they are so well-rounded and we get to know them so well, and because of that, there's no trouble understanding why they make the decisions they do. lilah and shane have Chemistry™️ like no other; even when they weren't touching each other, i was losing it. because of the way their careers paralleled in trajectory, they share such a special, unspoken bond, that had them so at odds, while simultaneously caring for each other on a fundamental level. i loved this and can't wait to see what ava has coming next!
*thank you Random House & netgalley for the eARC!
Oh my god, the tension, the angst, the pining 😭 this was such a wonderful second-chance romance <333
💫 Second chance celebrity romance between the titular characters of a famous TV show
💫 Second chance after nine years of hating each other (well, passionate back and forth revenges)
💫 Past and present time switches, and it was done so well
💫 Swoony and angsty and steamy
💫 The bestest hea 😭
TWs - anxiety, panic attacks, alcoholic/drug-addicted parents (past), difficulties faced by child of divorce, bullying, invasion of privacy by fans and media
-- ty to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy!
Lilah and Shane met at an acting audition. Lilah, a trained, aspiring actress and Shane, a strikingly handsome bartender just trying it out because he can. They both land lead roles in the paranormal romance television show, Intangibles, where their characters are hopelessly in love on screen. They both became famous, became involved, and then fell apart. They have the opportunity to re-connect when Lila returns to the show for the ninth and final season.
This is my first Wilder book, but I’d heard good things about her prior book and this one. I was excited to read it because I love the title and premise — a whole book about the particular romance trope “will they or won’t they” which I haven’t read too much of in the past. There are other tropes and themes too - enemies to lovers, celebrity romance, second chances, forced proximity, and more. Those tropes, I am much more experienced with.
It was written in dual POVs and timelines (then vs. now). I love dual POVs in my romance! I love knowing what’s going through both parties heads which adds way more to the tension and conflict in most books. However, what I don’t like in my romance is lots of irrelevant backstory and a slow burn without resolution until the very end. Perhaps second chance/will they or won’t they romance just isn’t a trope for me since it requires some of that to a certain extent. I ended up renting this book on audio at my local library after it published because that was my only way I could get through it and finish (on 2.5x). It took me a really long time to come to care about the characters — until near the end actually. I liked Shane more than Lilah. In fact, I thought Lilah was pretty unlikable for most of the book and didn’t really care if she got her happy ending or not but I wanted the world for Shane…
Thank you to Ava, Random House Ballantine, and NetGalley for the digital review copy!
I enjoyed Ava Wilder's debut and was happy to see another book set in Hollywood. Unfortunately, while I enjoyed the characters and how fleshed out they were, I thought the story relied too heavily on miscommunication.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Overall, I liked the premise and thought this was a cute story. I enjoyed the Lovers to Enemies to Lovers plot and was interested to see all the obstacles and history the MCs would have to overcome to try and make their relationship work again.
The reason I gave this 3 stars was because it felt like reading an average rom com. It was good, but just average good. I had trouble liking the female MC and I was neutral on wanting her to get a happy ending or not. I had a hard time feeling invested in most of the characters, but it’s still an overall good story for some quick weekend reading.
This was a really angsty second chance romance. This is totally a me thing, but I am really over FMCs who think they are unlovable. Like no! Go gets some counseling please, it makes me sad you think that and I read to escape sad things. But like I said, that's totally a me issue and I'm sure it resonates with other people. Other than that, I liked the book. Both characters grow a lot throughout the book and end up in much healthier places than they were to begin with.
I loved Lilah and Shane’s story from love to hate to love again. Their ups and downs with a backdrop of a behind the scenes look at a TV show that depends on their chemistry was a great read.
Another enjoyable read from Ava Wilder! I loved the history between these two characters and the tension between them during the present day chapters. There was good mental health rep and growth with these characters. The miscommunication trope was a major factor in this one, that worked but at times maybe felt a little dragged out, but ultimately didn’t impact my love for this story because the second chance love piece was so good! Ava has an amazing way of creating this celebrity world and making readers feel as though they are a part of it, which is really fun. The behind the scenes situations, get-togethers, press, and tension between actors feel so authentic! The side characters in this one were really great as well. Lots to love about this novel and it’s a perfect summer read, so get your hands on it!!
Huge thank you to HTP and Dell for the ARC of this book, I’m such a fan of Ava’s work and lucky to have been part of the early readers for this one!
Solid read! If I could give star fractions, I would rate this read at a 3.75 stars- I enjoyed this book and read it in just a few short days.
About the book: Two actors find themselves working together again after their friends-with- benefits situation blew up in flames years prior. It has the second-chance romance, enemies to lovers, and miscommunication tropes.
TENSION. There is A LOT of it in this book, which I loved. I love a slow build with a dramatic confession and this book delivered. I deducted 1.25 stars from my rating solely because of the writing. I wasn’t a huge fan of the way Ava Wilder wrote the dual timeline. There were some moments where I was confused with what was happening and what timeline we were in, but I don’t know if that’s because of the writing or if the book just didn’t hold my attention enough to keep up. Despite that, I would definitely recommend this book to people because the characters are amazing- both together as well as individuals.
3.5 stars
I really enjoyed this one! What stands out most to me about Will They or Won't They is Ava Wilder's writing, which has a lot of personality and charm without overcorrecting and veering into "trying too hard" territory. I especially loved the dialogue between the characters, which felt organic and fun and banter-y, but also heartfelt and moving in the book's more climactic moments. As always, I am a big fan of The Angst and there was plenty of it here. That said, though the tension of the romantic buildup was great, I think the resolution of that tension didn't quite stick the landing for me; it felt a bit anticlimactic. Overall, though, this was a great romance and I will happily read anything that Ava Wilder writes next.
I was given an advance reader copy of this book by the publisher on Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. This was my first book by Ava Wilder and I will absolutely be reading her first book soon. The story follows an actor and actress, the leads of a popular tv show, in this enemies to lovers romance. I loved how the second chance romance trope was a blend of what happened to drive these two apart several years earlier and what was bringing them back together now. Great banter, loved the premise of the story, and overall likable characters. Definitely recommend! 5/5 stars
Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. Okay. Will They or Won't They by Ava Wilder was one of my most anticipated 2023 releases after I absolutely loved her debut, How to Fake it in Hollywood, but nothing could have prepared me for how much I adored this book. It follows Shane and Lilah, two actors who starred together in a super popular paranormal TV show where they played the will they won't they on-screen couple. They could not resist each other off-screen either. But after a messy secret breakup, they couldn't stand working together anymore, and Lilah quit the show after her contract was up. Now she's back for the last season, and working with Shane is still painfully annoying, frustrating, and challenging because... of course, their desire for each other never fizzled out.
This lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romance set around Hollywood completely took over my heart and had my attention from page one until the end. I barely stopped to even breathe. If you like forced proximity, books around acting, slow-burn, and really angsty romance, you HAVE TO pick this up. The tension and chemistry are delicious, the slow-burn is torturous in the best way, and the way it all comes together is worth everything. I absolutely loved every second, and it's a disgrace that we have to wait for another book by Ava Wilder until 2025.
So go add this masterpiece to your TBR and read it because I need as many books by this author as humanly possible. It's emotional, sexy, funny, and so much more. Lilah and Shane are such a fierce couple and they mean everything to me.
One of my favorite books of the year. I am usually not a fan of celebrity romances, but I really enjoyed this one. I loved the banter. Read if you enjoy enemies to lovers, second chance romance, angst, tension, jealousy, and sizzling chemistry.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for exchange of this honest review.
Ava Wilder’s second book, Will They or Won’t They, is a wonderful romcom with two actors, Shane and Lilah, who play character’s who are falling in love, but are people who have a…complicated history; literally a “will they or won’t they” scenario. Reading their relationship in the now, with the then sprinkled in for context, was interesting, funny, infuriating, sweet, and spicy, depending on the page you were reading. It was the only kind of roller coaster ride I enjoy!
I loved Ava Wilders last book and this was no exception. It was wonderfully written and the characters were perfect! Couldn't ask for a better rom com, and spicy too!
Ava Wilder is becoming an auto buy author for me! I loved this, no pun intended but the will they or won't they build up was perfect to keep you invested and loving the main characters. After a secret affair during their first season filming together Lilah and Shane end on a bad note bringing tension and anger to set for their remaining time together. When the final season brings Lilah back for the reunion all the fans have been wanting they have to navigate how to work together, what happened all those years ago and what they'll do with their careers after the show ends. I loved this couple so much that by the end I kept putting it down to try and make the story last longer.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group for granting me early access to this book in return for an honest review!
Thank you to NetGalley for this advanced copy of this wonderful book! I really enjoyed reading this book. The love/hate relationship between Shane and Lilah was polarizing and I was thrown by that twist at the end. I felt the passion of their relationship throughout the story and I truly didn’t want it to end. This was a fantastic first first for me from Ava Wilder and I will definitely be reading anything else she writes!
