This cute children's picture book tells the story of four young pairs of yellow wellies who journey to the top of a mystical mountain to ask three wise old women two very big questions. But, one thing they never expected was their little owner, River, to be joining them. Together they set out on the adventure of a lifetime. But will they make it? And, more importantly, will they find the answers they're looking for?
The story is sweet and fun. I think children would love to imagine what their favourite pair of rainboots might be thinking or doing when they aren't watching. The personification and the cute little details on the boots' faces also really adds to the story. In fact, all of the colourful illustrations make it really visually appealing and I am sure young children would be super interested in it. The large, clear font which is usually dark on a light coloured background or vice versa, is quite accessible. While there is a fair amount of words on each page, the well spaced and non-complicated font style will make things less intimidating for young readers. I also think it is perfect for shared reading with an adult. I would recommend this book for children in the age 4-8 range.
Thanks to Netgalley and a special thanks to the author Emily Dreeling for sending me a digital copy of the book to read and review. I am really glad I got to check this one out!
River and the Amazing Yellow Wellie Adventure by Emily Dreeling, Illustrated by Misha Jovanovic
Thank you NetGalley and Author Emily Dreeling for providing an advanced reader’s copy of the eBook for review considerations.
This review expresses my own personal opinion. I have not been asked to post it by the author, their publishing company or anyone connected with the book or author.
River and the Amazing Yellow Wellie Adventure is a book geared towards young readers age 3 to 5, maybe 6 or 7 depending on how advanced the child is in their reading and understanding.
It is a wonderful little story about four friends who happen to be talking boots or wellies in the British vernacular who find the courage to venture beyond their known little world, to explore and learn, and rely on each other as they search for the mysterious three wise women seeking answers to two important questions (nope, not telling you what the questions are). They are joined by River who, like the wellies, will learn about themselves during this journey into the unknown.
The writing is well done and brings you and your little one into the story in a humorous, imaginative way. Dreeling's story conveys that courage can call at any age and relying on yourself and helping your friends can be personally rewarding. The message is positive, uplifting, and wrapped in a blanket of warmth and love.
In an earlier life, I used to draw and therefore look for illustrations that bring out the imagination, that captivate the reader, I was not disappointed. Illustrator Misha Jovanovic does a good job in bringing out the characters in bold vivid strokes, helping the story come to life in a fun and inviting way. Little readers will love each character through Jonvanovic’s work.
I recommend this book be added to your little one's collection.
River and the Amazing Yellow Wellie Adventure is a fun children's book full of adventure and self discovery.
The Yellow Welly Gang are a group of wellies who are fearful of the outside world. They decide they must go on an expedition to see the elders at the mountain and gain advice. So, in the dead of night they set off for the mountain to find the wise elders.
On the way, they hear a noise that scares them and makes them doubt their decision. A lively, excited little girl named River jumps out from behind the bushes and insists on joining them to the mountain. After some hesitation the 5 set off to find the elders.
Once they arrive at the village, they begin to have fun. As time pushes on they remember the purpose of their trip and head into the mountain to speak with the elders.
The elders assure them that although the world is a big, daunting place they can have fun and be safe if they look after each other.
Reassured, they fetch River from the ongoing party and head back to the house before morning.
This is a lovely story about friendship and looking after each other. It teaches children the world can be a scary place but it can also be fun and exciting if you are careful and have good friends by your side.
It's a cute story with lovely illustrations to engage the reader.
I would recommend this book to 5-8 year olds.
What an adorable book! I had so much fun reading it, it follows four talking wellies who go on an adventure to meet the elders and ask for guidance on how to navigate the scary world outside while keeping their very cute human River safe.
It was very interesting story, I’m sure the kids are going to love it! The illustrations were really amazing as well, the colors are so vivid and energetic, it’s impossible not to be enchanted by it!
I’m definitely recommending it!
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review
My 4 & 6 year olds loved this book, we’ve read it several times already! Their favourite part was when River was doing the wellie wanging competition, they thought it was hilarious. It’s full of bright illustrations, ideal for a young audience.
Absolutely adorable, with such beautiful illustrations! Definitely a great book to read aloud for story time.
Emily Dreeling’s RIVER AND THE AMAZING YELLOW WELLIE ADVENTURE is an enchanting tale, perfect for young readers. The story is narrated from the perspectives of four pairs of talking wellies, each with their own unique personalities. These wellies seek guidance on how to navigate the daunting and rainy world outside while ensuring the well-being of their little girl, River. River relies on her wellies to keep her feet dry as she joyfully splashes through puddles and creeks.
The language used in the book is simple, clear, and friendly, making it easily understandable for young readers. American readers, especially those unfamiliar with the term "wellies," will quickly grasp its meaning as "rain boots" through the expressive illustrations. Illustrator Misha Jovanovic has skillfully crafted vivid and lively facial expressions for each pair of wellies. The illustrations are bright and complex, captivating children's attention and providing interesting details for them to explore on every page. River is portrayed as an energetic and curious young girl, constantly in motion, with expressive eyes and flowing hair.
Although the wellies are boots with facial features, they possess surprising amounts of personality. The book introduces a bunny pair named Bertie, a bear pair named Teddy, a stripy pair named Miley, and River's apparent favorites, the ladybug-adorned Lexie.
Author Dreeling maintains a positive, warmhearted, and supportive message throughout the story. The tone encourages an adventurous and exploratory spirit, emphasizing the importance of relying on and caring for friends, while also trusting in one's own strength and courage. The elegant italic writing, while charming, may present a slight challenge for young readers who are still learning their letters. However, most pages feature a clear color contrast between the writing and the background, compensating for this issue. There is one page with a pale blue background and yellow writing that might pose more difficulty for young eyes.
Nevertheless, RIVER AND THE AMAZING YELLOW WELLIE ADVENTURE is a lively and cheerful story that parents will enjoy reading aloud to their children. It offers an opportunity for parents to bring the characters to life by using different voices for each welly and River. The book will particularly resonate with early readers who love outdoor activities and splashing in puddles, especially if they have their own beloved pair of rain boots.
I thought that this book was a really fun read!
I read the book with my 5 year old daughter and she really enjoyed it, this is definitely a book that allows younger ones to use their imagination
The writing style was great, it was easy to follow and understand and she read the majority of the book to me herself apart from a couple of words that she was unsure of. She does read at a higher level at school so there weren’t too many issues but I would think this is a book for 5-7 year olds rather than those any younger to get the most out of the book
The illustrations worked really well with the story too to bring the book to life.
It is 4 stars from me for this one, we both enjoyed it – highly recommended!
An interesting read but the language felt at times a bit above the targeted age range. It's a nice story but a very high level concept. My 5 year old thought it was OK.
This is a really cute story. It’s about a group of Welles, yes, rain boots, that go off to have an adventure. On their adventure, they meet up with their little girl who should be in bed. The illustrations are bright and colorful, but I do think the story is quite long. And while I did like the story, I actually think it would work better as an animated short. The artwork works for that very well. I think because this is the grand adventure it is reminiscent of the shorts from the 90s and has a “Brave Little Toaster” feel. Overall, this was fine, and I would read it again, but most kids would probably fall asleep before you get to the end.
A lovely picture book for young adventurers. The story follows four wellies who seek go on an adventure to the mystical mountains. They are met by their owner, River, who joins them in their search. They reach a village full of wellies and they join them for fun and games while the four main characters ask three wise wellies very important questions.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to all parents who have children aged 3 to 5. This book can be read to and read by children. It is easy to understand and is very funny.
Thank you for this ARC, Netgalley!
River and the Amazing Yellow Wellie Adventure is exactly what the title is but it's much more fun! It is not only colorful but also immersive. The story is fun to read and the characters feel three dimensional, which is hard to do in children's picture book. I wanted to read more about River and the journey to the mountain but this is not bad either.
Aside from the stunning illustrations, River and the four pairs of yellow young wellies' adventure story teaches many lessons, one of which is the importance of daring to step outside of our comfort zone and try new things in our lives, despite the many obstacles that will be encountered. I loved it!
This is a story about a group of rain boots who go on an adventure. It is reminiscent of Brave Little Toaster, but it was a little forgettable.
Note: I received a free copy of this book from NetGalley. I was not compensated in any other fashion for the review and the opinions reflected below are entirely my own. Special thanks to the publisher and author for providing the copy.
What a sweet, sweet little book this is! The drawings are exquisite! The text is fun to read, and the story is lovely. This might be the most adorable kids' book I have seen this year! I hope there will be many more to come from the author of this book, this definitely is something I will be keeping an eye out for!
what a cute little adventure! talking things and a little girl loving each other, beautiful illustration and colorway. but some of the vocab felt a little too hard for kids? idk.
First and foremost, I would love to thank NetGalley, the author, and publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this advanced copy. This book has so many cute illustrations. Recommended
Thank you so much to Rising River Press LLC and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
Four young wellie boots are nervous that they won’t be able to cope in the scary outside nor look after their human friend River. So they set off on an adventure to meet the elders and River sneaks along with them. There they learn they’ll be just fine in the world.
This was adorable, utterly adorable. So much imagination went into creating this book and I absolutely adored it. I loved that the umbrellas and wellies were friends and spoke to each other, I loved that the wellies made a team and went off on an adventure, I love that we saw so many different types of wellies throughout the adventure. Everything in this was so adorable.
River tagged along on the adventure which made it even cuter, it reminded me a bit of the Snowman story where the child’s imagination comes alive and they go to this unknown land with them and have the most fun adventure of their lives. So creative and so fun.
If you like reading whimsical, fun, unique, imaginative, adventure stories with your children I really recommend adding this one in, it’s so much fun and a really incredible read.
