I LOVE the outsider trope, especially when set in a wealthy, glamorous community FULL of secrets. NO ONE NEEDS TO KNOW is a masterful thriller that will keep you up late turning the pages.
This book is just so good, I received a free e-copy and bought a physical because I just KNOW I'll re-read this one. An instant favorite.
Lindsay's voice on the page draws you in and refuses to let go. As a writer myself, I love learning from the greats, and Lindsay Cameron is one of them! This is a MUST read.
I was sadly disappointed in this novel. I had high expectations going into it, but it just didn't live up to the hype. I'm also struggling to see how this book is labeled as a thriller. I guess if you consider unseasoned chicken to be thrilling, it makes sense. But otherwise it is a stretch. I found myself really bored throughout this novel. It felt like most of it was simply filler and lacked any kind of depth. I've read far worse, and far better novels, and the fact I wanted to love this one is what makes it even more disappointing to me.
I enjoyed this thriller from Lindsay Cameron! Great storyline and the twists and turns had me second guessing right until the very end! Highly recommend!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I picked this up because I really wanted to read a thriller, and I regret to state that I didn't find it nearly stressful or mysterious enough to satisfy my cravings. However, I think this is due to the fact that the description gives way too much away. I'd recommend going into this blind, because there were some elements I liked:
- I liked how the story was told in multiple POVs.
- I'm not sure what it is, but I've always loved stories about ultra-wealthy people's secrets causing their lives to fall apart. Maybe I'm just a sucker for gossip, but this book delivers heavily on that front.
- The book is snarky and sarcastic in a lot of ways, and the mystery is definitely a slow burn.
- It feels a bit more like a women's fiction novel than a standard thriller, as the story does allow for introspection. This is especially because all the protagonists are mothers, and their relationships with their husbands/children are deeply explored.
Overall, I'd give my reading experience a 3.5-star rating because reading the description beforehand took out a lot of the fun for me. That being said, it would probably be closer to 4 stars if I'd gone in blind, so I would ultimately recommend this.
The title of this book was very intriguing to me and that is what made me decide to request it. I also liked to imagine myself in this book because I am in one of these neighborhood forums and there is always so much drama. We all know people love to hide behind a screen and say what they really think when nobody knows who is really typing. When murder gets thrown into the plot it makes it all that much more juicy! I really enjoyed reading this book and seeing what people will do to cover themselves. This book was completely entertaining and I will be recommending it to my family who also love mystery! Zoomed right through this book!
I received a free copy from NetGalley. The characters say a lot of things maybe they shouldn't when they think their posts are anonymous. The characters were hard to like and feel sorry for but the mystery was page turning.
Date is for the review, not the reading.
this one was kinda a miss for me. this book has so much potential to be such a great book, but somewhere along the way, the entire plot seemed to shift and there was a new problem. overall not the best..
NetGalley had asked me to give this book a read since I had read the author's debut book. So, I'd like to thank the publisher for giving me another go with this author!
No One Needs to Know is one of those books that is perfect for a beach read, a real popcorn flick of book. Not bad by any means, but not one that will make you give up on it or re-read it in the future. The story focuses on a group of women who all are connected due to their statuses in their socialite / off-spring schools. A photo taken at one of the dances starts a chain reaction that winds its way through four families. And, an interesting gossip forum that allows them all to post on it anon.
The book had me in for a spin and there are many twists and turns that you think you know something but you really don't.
The downfall is the characters are very surface and do not seem to lend themselves much to the plot as being nothing but shallow plot devices.
Again. A good beach read, but nothing more than that,
I had high hopes for this book starting out, but as I got closer to the end it sort of ended on a flat note for me. There was a lot of build up only to have the twist/end happen quickly at the end. It felt like there was too much story building for the ending. Overall, it was a quick, easy read - I just wish there was more to it.
a twisty thriller that i couldn't put down
thanks to the publisher and netgalley for the copy for review
Love a quick read especially one about crazy parents, and what happened behind closed doors. This was a fast paced easy summer reading I would definitely recommend.
I adore her writing! This is the second novel I am reading from her and I can attest that she is not only and incredible writer, but also an amazing friend!!!! Thrilling, chilling look at elite life in New York… and as a huge fan of gossip girl and big little lies, I am obsessed!!!
Big thank you to NetGalley and Random House Ballantine for the opportunity to read and review this book.
The socialite moms of the Upper East Side of Manhattan have secrets - and they're willing to spill all of them on the anonymous forum app called UrbanMyth, which allows users to post questions and confessions without anyone knowing their identity. Nothing on the internet is ever truly safe, however, because a hacker group infiltrates the app, causes a huge data breach, and allows everyone to identify who wrote which posts on the app. And then, of course, someone ends up dead.
The book follows three of the mamas affected by the hack and by the murder. Heather will do anything to get her daughter into the elite school she deserves. Norah is a power-mom executive who's struggling to balance that with being a mom. Poppy has the most secrets of all, and the most impressive facade to hide them. Did one of them kill to protect themselves?
I'm always a fan of a "rich people behaving badly" suspense novel. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the setting of this novel as well as the three main POV characters. There's a lot of rich people sleaziness that goes on in this book. Oh, the old rich businessman husband is a jerk? The lacrosse coach is having affairs? People are being extorted for laughably huge amounts of money? Check, check, check. I would not call this book a thriller. It's more of a drama novel with a bit of suspense and secrets to it. The first half of the book was really setup and character building, and things pick up in the last third of the novel. I would say that the pacing could be improved, but I plowed through the first half of the book, relishing in all the scumbag-ness and secrets. I almost find it laughable how much MONEY some people have.
Anyway - I would've loved more of Maya, maybe more chapters with her POV. That would've added a nice contrast to the three uber-rich-prep-school-mom POVs. I loved the online forum that drove the plot lines, and I can DEFINITELY see something like that completely consuming a community. I think part of the reason why I liked this book was because something like this could absolutely happen today (and has happened - I've read about several of these data breaches).
I'd recommend for fans of LOTS of drama and secrets with undertones of mystery.
Three mothers of 8th graders live in the Upper East Side and are competing for an acceptance to Crofton Boarding School. The snippy mothers, Poppy, Heather and Norah use a “secret” app UrbanMyth, where the can post their juiciest parts of their lives anonymously.. Slow burn book that reminds me of the scandal in Boston a few years back.
Loved the concept of this book and the inclusion of social media. While it is different, I loved how everything connected and watching the characters show their true colors.
Book Summary:
These days, there are dozens of different online forums to let neighborhoods and community communication. UrbanMyth isn't like the others. It's a confident and anonymous forum. Well, it was both of those things – until it got hacked.
Now all the dirty secrets of one neighborhood in New York are out in the open. It's not pretty, and somebody will die because of it.
My Review:
No One Needs to Know is a fast-paced thriller with familiar vibes. By that, I mean it fits in nicely with the thriller genre – but doesn't have a lot to make it stand out. I don't mean that in a terribly negative way. No One Needs to Know is a great beach/stormy night binge.
This book is very much a slow-burn murder saga, and boy, it has a satisfying ending. That said, it took me a bit to get invested in the story. I will blame the prologue on this, as it didn't feel as connected/necessary as the rest of the story.
The one thing I loved about No One Needs to Know is that actions had consequences. That made it so satisfying for me, and I hope other readers feel the same way. Regardless, this is the perfect binge read if you're looking for something quick and satisfying.
Highlights:
Same Vibes as Gossip Girl
Slow Burn Murder Mystery
(Actual: 3.5) Overall a quick, compulsive read with elements of Gossip Girl/nepotism + socialite vibes littered throughout! This thriller did take a moment or two to really get started for me but, once it did, I had a great time reading it and it kept my curiosity piqued all the way through to the end.
My goodness, this book felt like such a guilty pleasure read and so incredibly addicting. Most of the characters are completely unlikable, but you just can't look away.
It's filled with gossip and secrets, and I loved every minute of it!
I'm not sure what category this book really falls into. It's not quite a thriller, maybe a mystery, but whatever it is, please sign me up for more. No one Needs to Know is deliciously fun.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This thriller deserved more hype. I know I'm just posting about in on netgalley but I did post about it on my socials earlier. I love the rich people drama thing and I have recently found myself loving the books that weave forums into there. The two worked together so well. There was drama and cheating and jealousy. I loved it all. It was great and so well done. It could be made into a TV show I would eat every episode up.
No One Needs to Know was my first Lindsay Cameron book but will certainly not be my last! If I had to summarize this book succinctly, this is truly the adult Gossip Girl. It's the ultimate "neighborhood" drama, with a wide variety of characters, each with something to lose. A great read for 2023!
