Mary Magdalene; A Cultural History by Philip C. Almond was not for me to be honest. I found it a little boring! Thankful to read this before it was published but it will be a pass for me! Thank you!
An extremely well-researched and organized study of the Western Church's stories and understanding of Mary Magdalene. While weighty at times, it did a very good job of tracing the merging of the Marys of the Bible into a single Mary and the taking apart of that same merging. I would have liked to see more of the most recent scholarship, but time will tell which of those stories stand the test of time.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC.
This is a well researched discussion of what we really know about Mary Magdalene. I knew very little so I was surprised to learn about her transformation through the ages and times. First there are well done pictures and illustrations that really tell the story of her cult. Marys cult went through times where the Templars, Cathars, and early church wrote about her. With the sexual revolution of recent past she has become more relevant. But what do we really know about her? I found much to be interested in her role of redemption and the early church. This book is very well written and extremely interesting. Especially with the subjects brought out by the Da Vinci Code and the discussion it engendered. Thorough and timely. This book will interest many.
Thanks to Net Galley and Cambridge University Press for the digital ARC of this book.
I enjoyed this book, it's full of a lot of information but it gets much deeper into the theology than I was expecting. It turned out to be more of a textbook than a nonfiction book but I still enjoyed it.
This is a great book about Mary Magdalene. I loved how the author really dived into how Mary has been portrayed by different people throughout history. He includes historians, the church, and others who have called themselves followers of Mary through the years. It really gives an interesting look at how her persona has changed and evolved through the centuries. I have always been fascinated with her and enjoyed this book very much.
