Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion!
Someone Just Like You follows Molly Blum and Jude Stark, two lifelong rivals whose parents are neighbors and best friends. Molly and Jude’s history is filled with pranks, bitterness and general dislike towards one another. The two are forced together in order to surprise their parents with an anniversary celebration.
While I can recognize that this story has some high points - Jewish representation, a surprising amount of steam (although cringy) and a sweet message about forgiveness - it unfortunately just didn’t work for me. It was a quick, easy read, but I found the relationship to be borderline toxic. The MCs spent 20+ years pestering one another and interfering in each other’s lives and I just couldn’t believe that these two would actually last together. They acted like children and the pranks were painfully unamusing and harmful. Their romance felt like it really came out of nowhere, and there was not enough character development involved for either of them for me to really root for them together or individually. There was also an explanation given for divorce that I just straight up didn’t agree with.
The execution on this was disappointing for me and the plot just left me dissatisfied.
Just finished my first book by Meredith Schorr and yup, I'm definitely checking out her other stuff. It's about Molly and Jude, these two who've been butting heads since forever, now stuck planning their parents' anniversary. The start's a bit slow with all these high school prank vibes, but hang in there, it gets better.
Loved the crazy family stuff and how Molly and Jude end up with lookalike dates without even realizing – pretty funny. There's some drama with friends and family, cool romance, and real talk about jobs and life choices. Molly and Jude are like night and day, and it's cool seeing them figure things out. Overall, a fun, relatable romcom with a bit of steam. Great for a chill read with some feels and laughs.
I really enjoyed Meredith’s first book and I’m sure this one is great too!
However due to time, I will not be giving a detailed review of this book.
I thank the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest opinions.
Meredith Schorr's "Someone Just Like You" is a charming rom-com that explores the dynamics of childhood rivals forced to collaborate on their parents' anniversary party.
The use of Beatles puns and the banter between Molly and Jude adds a lighthearted touch. Molly's role as a recruiter added an interesting layer to the plot and I found her conversations with her newfound mentor to be particularly captivating.
Readers looking for a lighthearted HEA will enjoy this sweet story.
Thank you to NetGalley and ReadForever for the eARC of SOMEONE JUST LIKE YOU.
I am a HUGE fan of Meredith Schorr, and this title did not disappoint! She has a way of hooking you right in and making you fall in love with the characters. They are always so relatable and you can't help but root for them every step of the way. I highly recommend her books!
Ick. I hated the dialogue and both MCs so much. I wanted to love it, the concept but it fell so short for me. The main character was unlikeable to the point of "why do you even get a happy ending here". Enemies to lovers is a great trope but when you're doing everything for years to make one person's life as miserable as possible through "pranks". It felt more like bullying at one point and didn't seem even healthy for these individuals to still speak to each other.
I very much enjoyed this book. I did not know anything about it when going in so it was a pleasant surprise
A career ending injury is my absolutely worst nightmare. Molly and Jude are forced as enemies to plan a wedding anniversary party for their parents. Classically so, enemies to lovers this story unfolds. It was cute, it was joyful; I really enjoyed this book.
Enemies to lovers is just ready for some humor and one of my favorites. While this one is predictable, and I realize all rom coms are, I enjoyed it. This is one of my favorite tropes and it didn’t disappoint in this one. At times the pranks seemed a little mean and a little much, but I loved the NYC references and the Jewish heritage.
If you're in the mood for an enemies to lovers romance full of banter and pranks, this book is the one for you! It was an easy read, which I flew through in less than a day!
A cute read, with two characters who went from friends to enemies, and who need to come together to organize a party. Seeing them together is really fun, the flirting, the clear feelings they try to hide. I loved.
Someone Just Like You is exactly what I needed. A funny, sweet book with characters that are easy to like and a good romance. The two main Characters are in a forced proximity situation as they are put together to find a venue for a party. This enemies to lovers romance has a little bit of spice, its not closed door, but it isn’t THE story (I would say two jalapeños). This is a witty, charming book that is full of family and close friends. I used it as a palate cleanser from my last read and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thank you, Netgalley, the author, and Forever Books for the gifted e-book! ❤️ #gifted. My review is comprised of my honest thoughts.
Read this book if you like: Dual POV, enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, forced proximity
Ughhh. They were just too childish for me. I wanted to love it. Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope, but this disappointed me. I think others will love it. I couldn't connect.
This was such a fun and cute book! The vibes were immaculate, the pacing was great for a cozy read but also kept me hooked page after page. I loved it!
Meredith Schorr is an auto buy author for me, and Someone Just Like You is another reason why. There is something about Schorr’s writing that is instantly relatable, enjoyable, and she makes you fall in love with her characters immediately.
I would highly recommend SJLY to all of my friends!
3.5 stars. This enemies to lovers rom-com is full of banter and tension, secrets and truths. In childhood, Molly and Jude started out as best friends, but then something happened and they became sworn enemies. The difficulty is that their families are very close, and the siblings decide they should all band together to throw their parents a joint surprise anniversary party.
You will root for Molly and Jude, as they work together to find the perfect venue. Since their relationship from childhood has always been about the pranks they would pull on each other, it does get a bit tiresome when the pranking continues between them as adults. Some of the pranks have a slightly mean tone to them, and this reader began to get a bit annoyed by their childishness.
I did enjoy the way Molly and Jude began to soften and then realized they did have romantic feelings. The way this tension builds and then is explored is what I liked about this story. Also how secrets are best shared, even though it’s difficult and scary, so the underlying issues can be resolved and relationships come out stronger on the other side. There is a subplot revealed when the surprise party doesn’t have the desired result, and I liked the emotions and ideals explored through it.
Thank you to Forever (Grand Central Publishing) and Netgalley for the electronic advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review.
The pranks were next-level with inventiveness and creativity, and the chemistry was off-the-charts. Loved it.
3.5 stars rounded up... Contrary to a lot of other reviews, I actually really enjoyed the first half of the novel with all of Molly and Jude's pranks and banter, and overall, I enjoyed the way things panned out. My struggle with this one is for sure "it's not the book, it's just me" because I very much could not relate to Molly at all. Every decision she made was probably the opposite of something I'd do. I definitely think its a hallmark of good writing to feel this strongly about a character - especially because I think that if it was written from the other POV or even dual POV I'd be all over this. I really did enjoy the childhood rivals to lovers plotline, the family dynamics were great, plus Molly had an actual best friend and not just some 2D plot device.
If you enjoy golden doodles, pop culture laced banter, and doppelgangers, I'd say give this a go!
Someone Just Like You has an addictive writing style and an FMC you can root for. However, the incessant pranks from adults and the third-act breakup did this book a disservice.
If you're an adult--then act like one. The FMC and MMC in this novel were stuck in a vicious cycle from their childhood. The cycle could easily have been broken, but instead of breaking it, they fell back into it again and again. This was especially frustrating because the pranks came from a mean and hateful place--not a good-natured one. This made the eventual romance unbelievable for me as a reader.
The third-act breakup was understandable in this book, but I thought the whole situation was too sticky and was resolved too easily all things considered.
I would consider reading more from this author, but this book was not it for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc for an honest review.
Dating others to help replicate the feeling that “the one” gives you is a trope I can’t really get into. Just be honest and tell the gal/guy how ya feel! Jude and Molly grew up together and constantly ribbed one another with prank after prank. This being mentioned over and over in an adult novel was just sort of meh for the plot, but I get why it was mentioned. Yet, could we just move on to the here and now and focus on being grown ups? I also didn’t love how the kids treated the parents as though they were children, too. Just kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Overall, it wasn’t a bad book of friends to lovers, just not one I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend to all. Thanks for the opportunity to read!
