I knew as soon as I read the description this was a must read for me.
Imagine the horror as Hannah recognizes the man her daughter has become engaged. He’s old, oily, and odious.
Reading kept me in the verge Of nervousness. Hannah is desperately trying to hold onto her carefully crafted life while redeeming her daughter. The seediness Of her history threaten to undermine her present and future.
The most astonishing part was the ending and how it all folded together and secrets revealed about Rob.
Great read!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Hannah is living happily with her daughter Belle, partner Rob, and their daughter Amber. Belle is turning 18 and is due to come back from studying in France for a couple of months. After missing her flight and arriving late, just in time for her surprise birthday party, Belle announces that she is engaged to a much older man, Jack. Hannah knows Jack from her past and knows he is up to no good, but she can't tell Belle why she can't date Jack because Hannah is hiding things from her past.
This was a pretty good book. There were times when I rolled my eyes at some of the things going on and the coincidences involved, and at times I felt like things got repetitive, but at the end, the way things played out ironed out some of the coincidences. I definitely didn't see the end coming. It wrapped things up pretty well.
Thank you to NetGalley, Samantha Hayes and Bookouture for an ARC copy of The Engagement.
I loved this book and it grabbed my interest from the very first page. The POV switches between the main characters: Molly, Hannah, and Belle. I enjoyed learning about the characters and the story from each of their perspectives. The characters are well-developed and have a lot of depth. I felt bad for them because they are in a terrible situation. I was rooting for them to get out of it safely. At one point I wanted to shake some sense into Belle.
I was able to guess the twist ending by paying attention to the little clues hidden in the story. The ending is good and shocking.
I highly recommend reading The Engagement by Samantha Hayes and I cannot wait to read another one of her books.
The Engagement was quite the rollercoaster of a story. The description alone had me hooked and I was kept on the edge of my seat all the way to the quite shocking ending.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
Wow, what a ride that was. This was nothing like I expected when I picked it up based on the blurb alone, but boy did it capture my attention. And it didn't let up until I turned the last page. There is a lot to uncover in this story. Much of it is hard to read because of the subject matter, but I am definitely glad I took this journey.
This review is going to be hard to write without giving away the twists.
Belle, who is just turning 18, returns home from studying abroad in France with a surprise - her her new fiancé! Her parents have never met him, were not aware he existed, and he is more than twice her age. Needless to say, her parents are not happy. Hannah, Belle’s mom, realizes she know Jack, Belle's fiance, and that he is part of a nightmare from her past. Hannah has kept this secret from everyone and it could destroy her. What does Jack want? That's the question!
I love psychological suspense and this one had lots of amazing things - evil characters, dual timelines, and several points of view. And what happens in this storyline goes on in the real world, which is terrifying. There are several twist and turns, including one BIG on that I did not see coming!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookuture for an ARC in exchange for my honest review. This book releases January 10, 2023.
This book had me on the edge of my chair. I’ve always liked reading thriller and mystery and safe to say Samantha delivered! The plot twists had me shook and I can’t wait to read more of this author!
Fast paced mystery thriller that really pulls you in. You may think you know exactly where the story is going but the ending will surprise you in the best way. I am definitely adding Samantha Hayes to my list of mystery writers to follow. I can't wait to read her backlist and see what she does next.
The tagline had me from the moment I started this read and it didn’t let up. This book was absolutely amazing from beginning to end with edge of your seat, page turning excellence
Great book to end and start the year with. So much going on in this book with the ending that was so good!!! Not where I saw this going.
A definite page turner that draws you right in.
4.5 stars!!.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book is.
I will give The Engagement 3.5 starts rounded up to 4.
Although the plot is nice and creative, I found many details and the characters quite flimsy: I know it's a work of fiction but some choices are pretty forced and left me thinking that nothing in real life would go like this.
I appreciated the final twist, which might be rather unexpected if you don't pay attention to some clues left here and there. I had figured it out towards the end of the book but I liked that it was thoroughly explained.
Hannah and her partner Rob plan a surprise birthday party for their daughter Belle who has been out of the country. They are shocked when she turns up with a man who she is engaged to. Hannah is especially shocked, because she knows this man from her past and never thought she'd see him again... can she keep her daughter safe from danger...?
A brilliant thriller that keeps you turning the pages until the shocking ending. Great twists and turns.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
OMG! This book is so amazing, I couldn't out it down! There are so many twists and turns. I never saw the ending coming. I'm so sad it's over, but will definitely be reading more by this author!
Samantha Hayes is one of my very favourite authors and a new book from her is the highlight of my year! So The Engagement was a highly anticipated book for me and thankfully lived up to my high expectations. Hannah is excited to welcome her daughter Belle back from a trip to France so that the family can celebrate her 18th birthday with her. But Belle brings a surprise of her own back to the UK-her new fiancé, Jack. From the start Hannah is shocked as Jack isn’t who he says he is and Hannah is forced to look back into her past to protect her family from the man she has been hiding from. But what secrets is Hannah hiding and how far will she go to make sure no one finds out?
Told through two timelines and multiple viewpoints, The Engagement is an absolutely incredible tale of family life broken apart by an interloper who threatens everything Hannah holds dear. The characterisation was brilliant with all the characters inspiring a variety of emotions in me! Belle came across as spoilt and naive whereas Hannah was almost a female Liam Neeson who would do whatever it took to keep her family safe! Nothing would stop her!!
I thought I had everything worked out and to an extent I did but there was such a clever twist at one point that I physically slapped my forehead that I hadn’t seen it coming! Very VERY clever Ms Hayes!!!! So I absolutely loved The Engagement-it had the wow factor I had been expecting but with added depth that really drew me in. Highly recommended!
Whaaat did I just read! This book was dark, deep and twisty. I absolutely loved the characters and the way the author brought them to life. I loved the unique and compelling storyline. What an eye opening, suspenseful, thriller. Highly recommend and can’t wait to read more by Samantha Hayes!
Oh wow!! I absolutely loved this book. I was hooked from the first page and couldn’t put it down! Twists and turns and unexpected endings!! I’d recommend it to everyone!
Hannah & Rob married and have planned an elaborate 18th birthday party for their daughter Belle. Belle & Jack announce they’re engaged at her party! Hannah knows Jack from her past, and he is not 39 like he told Belle. The twists and turns begin.
This is a page turner, for me it fell a bit flat about a third of the way in But, after that it went crazy, head spinning with so many twists and rushes of adrenaline. Wow just wow you have got to read this if you love suspense, thrillers, mystery and shocking endings!
Bravo to Samantha Hayes, I loved it.
Much thanks to the Publisher and Samantha Hayes and Net Galley for giving me this amazing pleasure of reading such an incredible book to review!
Thank you to Netgalley, Bookouture, and Samantha Hayes. I could not put this book down once I stared reading it. I devoured this book in a day and a half. This is a story about a mother and the love for her daughter. Hannah, or Molly as she’s really known, has always protected her daughter Belle from everything and everyone. Hannah also has another daughter with her husband Rob. Rob turns out to be Belle’s biological father and that’s why he became a part of his and Hannah’s wife. Both Hannah (Molly) and Rob believe that they are the reason that the real Hannah died. Belle ends up coming back from France with a fiancé in tow who in reality was a part of Hannah and Rob’s past that they want to forget. Both Hannah and Rob lie to each other about their pasts and Rob keeps the secret of knowing his wife’s true identity and how he is Belle’s biological father. Belle’s fiancé Jack a.k.a Darren blackmails both Hannah and Rob in order to get back the money Hannah stole the day that Belle was born. Hannah tries to protect her daughter but Belle is very taken with Jack and doesn’t understand why nobody likes him and doesn’t see the truth about him. Belle ends up going to London to surprise Jack and ends up being drugged to service men in order to pay back the debt that Hannah owes Darren and Vaughn the owner of the brothel and other shady dealings. Hannah finds Belle and sets the place in a blaze of fire and kills Darren and Vaughn. So it ends with a happy ending.
Wow! Samantha Hayes never let’s me down. She knows how to write a wild and twisty story that keeps you on the edge of your seat! I loved every minute of it! I highly recommend picking up this 5 star read when it hits the shelves, Jan 10, 2023.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Oh wow this was a page turner and a half! I really enjoyed this story and couldn’t put it down.
This was seedy, thrilling and I was hooked from the start.
I would say one of the twists was fairly obvious but the final twist was one I didn’t see coming at all.
A really gripping read, with flawed, human characters. Thank you to the author and publisher for the chance to read this advanced copy. Highly recommend
