This is the third book in the DI Scott series and I’m really enjoying this series. The characters are well written, I feel like we need to get to know some of the other characters better but I’m really liking the relationship between Scott and his partner Abby, and his new budding romance with Cara. A serial killer killing people from an old creepy boarding school. If you enjoy a good mystery with a creepy atmosphere and a splash of romance then I highly recommend this book, which can be read as a standalone but I would start at number 1
I wanted to love this book, but unfortunately it fell a little flat for me. The build up was great, and I didn’t see it coming on who the killer was, but if felt anti-climactic once it was revealed, and I still had questions about a couple of the other characters.
Big thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Fun and easy read set in a boarding school where suspicious deaths keep occouring. Twists and turns and good character interactions. Detective Inspector Scott Baker and his team investigating, and what they find is not what they expected.
This one had all the set up for a solid thriller: creepy old boarding school, and coverups, It's an easy read with simple language and clear police procedural processes. Unfortunately, the main characters were hard for me to relate to because there was nothing unique about them, there were a lot of loose ends, and the ending lacked a clear explanation as to the real how of it was done and I thought the why was underwhelming. It's unfortunate that it lost steam 75% of the way and had a disappointing conclusion, because I was really enjoying it up until that point.
A huge thank you to the author and the publisher for providing an e-ARC via NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.
Thank you to Netgally, the publishers, and Jay Nadal
When I requested this book I was unaware that it was apart of a series, one that requires you to read the previous books for this one to make sense. I am unable to read all the previous books along with this one before the publish date. Therefore, I will rate this a fair 3/5 stars and will adjust the rating and review when I am able to read all the books in the series along with this one.
Another good read in the series and I'm really looking forward to the prospect of more cases. Good characters and an interesting premise.
Part of a series featuring Detective inspector Scott Baker. Set in a prestigious boarding school our Detective and his team come up against the establishment. A good read.
My second read from the author. As previous book, One Deadly Lesson was started with strong scene and narration. The early premise was interesting and intriguing. This story take set at private school and bullying issues.
This one is enjoyable book. The writing okay and the story easy to understand.. The author make the investigation procedural and crime mystery part easy to follow even for newbie reader in the genre. My personal issues are the main characters. I cant feel any connection with this detective team. They feel streotipe and lack unique personality. Their convo little bit off and isnt feel like real banter. And the conclusion little bit rush and I lose the tension.
This was a promising book with alot potential.
Thank you Inkubator Books for provided me with this copy. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Not normally the type of read I would choose. Out of my comfort zone however I found it an intriguing and great read. I read it through very quickly.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
The book opens with a murder in a boarding school, an act of revenge. Detective Scott Baker is called to investigate the murder. The case becomes more complicated as more professors and former professors are murdered. One thing is clear, someone is against the staff of the school. At the same time, Detective Baker must deal with someone terrorizing his girlfriend Cara.
The story is interesting the mystery was fun to work on. One issue I had was that the story went through four different points of view before it had passed 30 pages. There was a lot of jumping around between viewpoints when it was not really needed. It was easy and quick to read despite this. Even though this is part of a series, it is not necessary to read the others to understand or enjoy.
This is a good book for anyone who likes mysteries.
I really liked this story…again another book that I didn’t realize was one of a series, but I would read more of this author and this series. The story was complex, and I almost suspected who the killer was.
Book 3 in he series, I realy enjoyed the premise of the series. I thought the culprit from a bit obvious but I do enjoy the characters and therefore would look forward to reading other books in this series.
Another great! Couldn’t put it down! Can not wait to read more! Sometimes I wish I didn’t read so dang fast!
Conspiracy Of Silence…
The third outing in the DI Scott Baker series finds the detective and team called to investigate suspicious deaths at an auspicious boarding school - no easy task considering the complete conspiracy of silence that meets them. An engaging premise for this outing and the descriptions are well done, the darkness apt and often shocking. Whilst further character development would be well received, this is another worthy addition to the series.
A good police procedural of a series of killings. Set in a private school which is strict on discipline and which turns a blind eye to bullying, this is a theme which runs through the book and it does not make for easy reading. The plot is a clever puzzle with initially few clues , but which gradually comes together and is well done. There are a couple of open ends.
Scott's (the main detective) relationship is moving on, but the book has just enough information about his personal life without it taking over too much. Well written, the plot has enough action and pace to keep you hooked, though was perhaps finished off too quickly and I am still wondering about the couple of loose ends.
Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
I'm not a fan of character based thrillers and this one seemed to just have so much description that added nothing to the plot or the atmosphere. And for all that waffle, it also didn't focus on the important things like giving an insight into the characters. I loved the premise and I've no doubt that there are plenty dodgy boarding schools who would be trying to cover up all sorts so that aspect was intriguing to me. The bullying at times got a bit dark and overall I felt I was just left with a lot of questions that went unanswered. I'd say of you love character based books with not a lot happening between the murders, and if you don't look too deeply and focus on the plot holes then it is a good book! Lol which is a bit of a contradiction but I'm self aware enough to know that it's no fault of the book that I personally find character driven books slow!
Thank you to Inkubator books, Netgalley and the author for an e-ARC of One Deadly Lesson. This was my first Jay Nadal book and I was intrigued by the premise and the murder mystery set against the backdrop of a ln elite boarding school. I enjoyed the setting immensely and found the police/investigator characters were very interesting and entertaining to read about.
There was a focus on bullying and in fact bullying that really went too far - some of that was difficult to read at times.
I felt the ending was a little rushed and random when the killer was finally revealed but overall this was a solid mystery/thriller and I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed reading “one deadly lesson” by Jay Nadal. When I first chose this read I did not know that it belonged to a series of books about DI Scott, and now I want to go back and read the rest of them. Set at a private boarding school, several staff are being murdered. Can the detectives figure out who is the killer before it’s too late? The characters Scott, Cara, Mike and Abby are all very relatable, and you get attached to them as you read this novel. This thriller has good suspense, questions and I didn’t want to put it down. Would recommend to any crime/thriller lover out there, who also loves a good series. They could make Jay Nadal’s novels into a TV show on Netflix, and I would watch!
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced copy.
This was my first Jay Nadal book and having not read the first 2 of this series, I was still able to jump right in and enjoy this crime thriller! Fast paced, and kept me guessing the entire time. I definitely will be reading more from this author/series.
This was my foray into books by Jay Nadal. Overall, it was a good read, if a little predictable, with a hurried ending.
Delving into the depth of private education, stiff upper lip, bullying and cover-ups, the premise had all the hallmarks of an excellent crime thriller. Which it was for 70% of the book. After which, the conclusion felt a little rushed and obvious. No final interview to discover the pragmatism behind the cover-up and no follow-up on Matthew or the bullies. It felt like a lot of loose ends. The Cara storyline seemed pointless in many ways too, but that was just my humble opinion.
Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad book, but it just felt rushed and unfinished. I wanted some loose ends tied up better.
